  • Feasts - Mexico 1 of 3 - BBC Culture Documentary , recorded 17.09.2011
    Series in which food writer and presenter Stefan Gates immerses himself in some of the most extraordinary feasts and festivals on earth. By joining ordinary people in these strange and wonderful distillations of their culture and beliefs, he hopes to gain a revelatory insight into how the world thinks and feels.
    Stefan goes on a wild emotional and spiritual rollercoaster ride, starting with a teenage girl's bizarre coming-of-age ceremony and ending with the Day of the Dead, a cacophonous cross-cultural festival of the senses during which Mexicans truly believe that their loved ones come back from the dead for three days every year to spend the day with them.
    In Oaxaca, he is dressed up as a dead woman and made to dance like a lunatic at the head of a procession as it makes its way through town. He is turned into an emotional wreck at the moment the dead return, bursting into tears as Dias de los Muertos makes him experience grief and loss for the first time.
    But then in the next breath, the family Stefan is living with teach him to celebrate and laugh at death. They turn his views on their head, allowing him to embrace and conquer his fear of death through an extraordinary sensual onslaught of food, flowers, songs and smells. The sight of the graveyards overflowing with flowers and mescal-drinking revellers is a truly life-changing experience.

    btw we're a working class family but at the time, we were doing pretty good for a working class...granted dad had 3 jobs and paid very well but what mattered we're still together as a family in the rough and best times...lol I remember mom kept wondering if they should go with a catering company or she and other ladies from church were going to do the cooking. Its a common custom to help out when parties like these came around and daddy said it was best home cooked becuz the party took place at our house (which was a long time ago lol) and the kitchen was big enough to continue preparing meals, heck idk how but daddy manged to make the front and back yard look like a nice outdoor restaurant with table set up with hot fresh food...u can say we pigged out...especially me lol especially with cake which was Pastel de 3 Leches....i dont remember telling daddy that but I think he knew... lol lol lol...good times good times....

    We had no dance but there was music there were lots of talking and eating and photos. Not sure about everyone else but in our church's custom, the girls had matching plastic bouquets and during the ceremony it was exchanged for real beautiful bouquets, any floral hair pieces were exchanged for rhinestone crowns, rings, bible (mine is one of those Precious Moments type very cute) the pillow and of course speech...Yeah I have no problem talking in front of many but I tend to stutter just when I think I am on a role of course I started to cry in that moment, I mean heck it was my day, my moment. It was not just about me turning a year older but a triumph for my family and me becuz this was an age when my mom came here and had no celebrations, she and daddy had me (mom being 18 and dad 20). For me this was an age of understanding and stepping into this new environment of growth, there was no turning back. Little by little I realized I will have to deal with stuff on my own, learn to do things on my own but also ask for help and advice...Think on my own..I am now 21 years old...7 years ago my 15 took place, during that time, I had made so many mistakes and many regrets but each of them had solution because I had help along the way. I remember when I made my own vow before God and others what I wanted to do with my life and so far I am alive because of my promises and God's mercy over my family and me. I am facing a greater challenge but still remember what I have been taught since childhood

    The culture they display here is mostly Mexico City culture and the surrounding areas. I'm from the state of Jalisco and the culture is unlike Mexico city in many ways. I've actually never seen a wrestling match in my entire life and there isn't a wrestling club within a 100 miles. The culture is different all over Mexico Just like the southern culture is different in the United states than it is in New England and how the culture is different in Wales in the Uk than in Scotland

    there is no video on the internet that can explain the culture of Mexico, but good for you, at least you are not like some Mexican-Americans here, that want to act and look like they are 100% americans, they don't know the culture the people and the beautiful places in Mexico.

  • @LG141602
    @LG141602 Před 11 lety

    Oh, I see. I was confused by your comments because I didn't know if you were Mexican-American or American, I'm also Mexican American, that's why I think, one of my grandmothers is from Spain and the from Italy. And yes Mexican-Americans like me are proud of our Heritage. But not all M-A are the same, I travel 6 times a year to Mexico, and I see a lot of M-A, speaking English, simulating that they can't understand spanish, even if they were speaking spanish before on the plane. etc. etc.

    Good as usual coming from BBC. Just I'd suggest making some serious research in advance. The journalists wrongly said the presence of Aztecs in Oaxaca is higher there than in Mexico City. Anybody average Mexican junior high school student can tell that the ethnic groups in Oaxaca are Zapotecos, Mixtecos or Mixes.
    The journalists never was explained that Aztec was a civilizations not a culture. Aztecs, as other ethnic groups in Mexico, spoke Nahuatl which was spread across Mesoamerica (central and southern Mexico) by Toltecs.

I wish u luck. remember ur ancestors were warriors, poets, mathematicians, farmers, painters. there is a lot to be learn and be proud of.

    15 years of age are also celebrated in other places of Latin America, for example in Colombia, where that is very similar to what the video shows. However, I think that Mexicans spend more money to make the party.

    If you research, a Quinceañera was the way for the Spaniards to acculturate the indigenous people into Catholicism, or so it is believed.There is no true answer to its origin because the fancy dresses and ballroom atmosphere was also due to the French. We may not all be Aztec or Spanish, but we are all in one way or another affected by the customs.

    What's with the graduation music at the church? Also, I never liked the modern day dance they do after the waltz. It just always made me cringe when I went to all of my cousin's quinceneras and they preformed it (I didn't do a modern day dance. I was more than satisfied with the waltz with my father). I think it's because they try to act more of an adult than they really are. Kinda like "Am I sexy now?" but not pushing it too much.... know what I mean? Sure, traditionally they've become women... but they're really still adolescents.
    Anyways, the rest of her party looked like fun. Everybody having a good time and celebrating.

    • @MissHeathen
      @MissHeathen Před 7 lety +1

      Eleazar Manuel In my opinion all of culture is silly and probably wrong about everything. But when the notion of _silliness_ comes from Western Civilization (predominately white cultures) always has this hierarchal classist disdain towards brown cultures that didn't rape nature of its resources and appropriate other cultures to ensure global dominance by burning fossil fuels until the environment is uninhabitable.
      I don't care if you degrade your own culture, that's you. Others wish to be proud of their culture and linguistic heritage to never allow western civilization to devalue, distort, or rewrite their cultural history as something "silly".

    • @felizdesdichado
      @felizdesdichado Před 7 lety +3

      I do am proud of my culture and my country, but some parts of our culture do are silly, as probably some parts of yours are too,and consider that our culture isn't even a pure one; it's mixed between both our Indigenous and European origins, so i can understand why someone not familiar with my culture would call silly a part of it that even most of us think of as silly too.
