Great reaction! And it always cheers my heart when Miku is given the respect she so much deserves. About a decade ago she dreamt of setting up her own hard rock band - one that should make a difference -, found three outstanding musicians, then observed that her own voice wasn't right for the music the band had in mind, handed the mike to their new singer Saiki and decided to play the rhythm guitar instead, although she hardly knew then how to handle the instrument. And here she is .... shining brightly in one of today's most versatile rock bands. It's a wonderful lesson on how to make the most of yourself by going for it with steely determination and by not being afraid of taking chances. Miku is a role model in many ways.

Band Maid Wish List for 12/5/22: (a) Never die; (b) Never grow old; (c)The band's membership can never change; (d) You will find a way to live in Japan, while simultaneously living in the United States, all year long, every year; (e) You will gain world-wide fame, accolades, sales, influence and affluence, but will never have to compromise your integrity, nor the integrity of your music. Bonus item: You will all get to dance on the graves of your critics, while singing any song that you find appropriate. Band Maid Forever!!!!!

I saw B-M live in San Diego on this tour and to your last point Miku is just a GD rock star. She’s definitely cute and fun, but she controls the audience as well as any other band out there. She has a presence that’s hard to quantify and make no sense coming from someone like her, but she does it. It breaks my brain, but she is amazing.

Band Maid. Running for World Domination one reaction video after the other (and yes it works, I would say three exposures to them ). Definitely, the most interesting Rock group to pop up since...Nirvana? With a lot better musicians compared to pretty much anybody. They are so rare that I will use the term Beatles factor where all the band members can be your favourite as you move through a setlist. The only prerequisite to being a Band Maid fan is to enjoy fantastic songwriting and musicianship and that you are OK about guessing wrong all the time. Band Maid will make you guess wrong constantly. They will syncopate and play across the bars to the point that you think they are playing odd metrics or even polymetric while they in fact are grooving in 4/4, and at other times they will suddenly take a moment to jump into 20/8 just for the kicks. Kanami and MISA will suddenly set off on LONG journeys into landscapes very few hard rockers have ever ventured to. And then we have Akane shifting drum pattern pretty much along every chord change (it can feel like). I saw a drummer that had tried to learn a song, and he stated that technically it is nearly impossible. Mentally it is genuinely impossible, to remember the ever-changing pattern evolutions.
And then is Miku, this entity's heart, soul, and raw determination. She still, after ten years, the only one that looks comfortable talking with other human beings. The girl who formed the group as lead singer instantly understood that her vocals were too weak on her own to front hard rock. Thus she demoted herself to backup singer and apprentice on guitar under the genius of Kanami. Racking up the 10,000 hours of practice to reach true skill in record time, it sounds like. The GAP in the other personalities and what they do when in Band Maid armoured dresses and having their instruments as shields is just mind-bending.
But most of all there is Kanami's songwriting that has pushed to maids as musicians for soon 10 years. Again a hug to Miku who has spent years practising to occupy the rhythmic centre of her band, freeing up her instrumental friends to explore further afield as she holds the centre down. Thus also freeing up Kanami's evolution as a songwriter. She is currently writing rock anthems that pull as hard on the heart as the first time I heard "With or without you" and "Where the streets have no name" live for the first time back in the 1980s by the kings of rock anthems. And that is not even Band Maids' priority.
I thank David Grohl and Foo for doing CPR on Rock for the last two decades. I love them for it, even more so for reminding us all that Rock should ALSO be uplifting and fun (bless the dude for his losses!) but Band Maid is so GM'ned fresh. It does not sound like post-punk or metal-pop or grunge-Walz (I am losing track of the many ways rock was supposed to be revived for the 21st century😳). Band Maid is out here right now doing it.
These five grown-assed women deserve all the attention in the world. I mean, how many rock songs with a strong lyrical message have been put out there over the last 5 decades anyhow? I might add that the lyrics of Miku are placing themselves favourably if one reads transcripts). At least she has the wit to know she made a rock band and write about topics comparable to "We will Rock you" by Queen.
God, how I love these women. And it makes sense that they come out of Japan. I was probably pre-conditioned for them by discovering the Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. His prose is filled with musical references (Including his breakthrough international novel "Norwegian Wood" (a song by the Beatles)). He was running a Jazz bar before he started writing. In his writing, it is like he takes all the ideas from western storytelling and applies the fundamentals of Japanese architecture/design (wabi-sabi) to it. Any person who loves music and Band-Maid - read "Wind-Up Bird Chronicle". Especially if you are a man. It is one heck of a rock album to read in text emotionally. It is as existential as the "Dark side of the moon" and as rhythmically driving as peak Beatles or Rolling Stones.
And this is the parallel: I had given up on reading novels back in the 90s (bugged down with deserving my Dr Scient defence). I had also given up on Rock. I mean, the great rock bands are still doing their farewell tours 40 years after they actually made something new and interesting. I was probably leaving rock when Prodigy went hard on the underground rave scene in the early 90s. Two Japanese artistic endeavours have pulled me back by being idiosyncratic and extremely personal at the same time.
Anybody reading this far: please please, pretty please listen to these girls. They are carrying a secret sauce of the idea of actual analogue instruments being played hard by living humans in the 21st century
(Congratulate me with the longest comment ever on YT) 👍

One of the amazing things about From Now On is how everyone gets something different from it. OSN picks up on the Guitar and Bass on this one. Wave Potter, who's primarily a drummer, says that he can manage the guitar work on this one, but the drums are beyond him, even at a reduced speed (bpm). Absolutely incredible musical composition that never forgets that it's a song and not just abstract instrumentation.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 You are right. This song is telling a story. The story about Band-Maid heading for "From Now On". I witnessed this song performed flawlessly in Tokyo as 12th song in the setlist and Band-Maid played it in 12 out of 13 US concerts as 8th to 11th song. (9th in Houston you saw) Most of the audience at those venues had, of course, already known their skills and talents. When I heard that they played this instrumental piece as opening at Aftershock on Oct. 9 and at Saitama Super Arena on Nov.6 (as support to Guns N' Roses), I felt very proud of them. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who did not know who the girls in maid outfit on the stage were. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Listen to us and open your eyes wide! We are not the persons that you think ! Salute us!" 😄

Thank you for sharing! Misa actually changed my whole images of the bass player in a rock band. It had been either very basic style or crazy funky (like Flea). Misa does both, and in the meantime, as you mentioned, she's using the entire fret board, going up and down the neck all the time. Literally, the busiest bassist. Besides, most importantly, she doesn't show off her technics too much and plays the phrases with the perfect tone at the right timing. Simply, amazing player.

Don't get me wrong I want to learn Japanese, but I am so glad I found this band not understanding the language. Because of this I could truly listen to the music and Saiki's voice is just another beautiful instrument being played by a master. I have not gotten all of the meaning of every song from the music before reading the translated lyrics but a lot of them I have. I say translated because not all meaning from Japanese to English can be translated. This fact of feeling the meaning endears them to me, more so than just having a catchy sound, I feel it.

If you combine songwriting, musicianship, audience connection, and consistency over many years, this is the best rock band since the Beatles. I grew up with the Beatles as my sound track, so that's no casual comment. By the way, for those of us who were brought up on classical and jazz, we never needed vocals to hear a story. Actually, most rock lyrics are pretty silly. The best bands are the ones that could do it without the vocals if they have to.
