Chaplin shot this scene three days after The Jazz Singer premiered. I now see in retrospect that this is a perfect metaphor for Chaplin having to decide whether to join the circus as it goes forward to the future, for to stay behind and walk off in the other direction (continuing silent films). We all know which choice he made. we know that he made the right choice and his fans, not to mention cinema were rewarded with City Lights, and Modern Times.
Ooohh, that's a great connection! I just watched The Circus for the first time the other night and really fell in love with it. Saw City Lights years ago in a packed theater and it was magical. Finally saw Modern Times just a couple of weeks ago. I'm binge watching Charlie right now and loving it!
For those wondering about all the great music, know that Chaplin went back - in 1968 - and re-scored the film entirely. That version is the only one modern audiences have ever seen (and heard). I have never found how much the music was updated (from 1928) or scored entirely anew but after 50 years of leaving this painful production behind, Chaplin still had the zest to give us what we have here, including his own vocals for the opening track "Swing Little Girl" sung when he was 78 years old.
Perfect metaphor for Chaplin's unease at the demise of silent films. He elects to stay alone in the remnant of the big top that he once dominated, as the circus moves on without him. The discarded star symbol adds to the effect. But he bucks up, and wanders off to whatever lies next.
@PC3900, as I said in another CZcams video of this scene in its comments section, it's the most Buster Keaton-like performance I've seen Chaplin do. He keeps a straight face, gives a cavier "Aw, screw it!" back kick to the crumpled poster fragment, and moves on not a broken man, but stronger than ever before and just DARING life to punch him in the chin again.
Chaplin is an amazing man! The movie took 3 years to make... with all the nonsense with Lita and all, and it's one of his most genious films ever created. The ending is soo sweet. That's something everyone should do, though you are upset and alone, just embrace it, walk away like the tramp; Spread your feet wide, twirl your cane and fix your bowler.
Happy Birthday to the Master of Comedy Charlie Chaplin! (Apr. 16) My introduction to cinema--the first films I ever owned and the first actor I deeply admired and imitated.
Piękna, symboliczna scena w ostatnim filmie Charliego w epoce kina niemego. Nadchodzi nowa epoka, której tak się obawia, której nie chce. Świat idzie do przodu. Kino idzie do przodu. Chaplin zostaje. Cyrk odjeżdża bez niego. Okazuje się później, że obawy były bezpodstawne, ale dotykające go lęk i smutek są widoczne w tej scenie.
@ElMaruecan82 This was filmed not long after the premiere of "The Jazz Singer", and in the original premiere score Chaplin had "Blue Skies" from the Jazz Singer played during this scene. (I got all this infor from Jeffrery Vance's "Chaplin: Genius of the Cinema")
@anna loanzon It is silent? If your meaning the music, silent films needed music to set the mood instead of setting the mood with lighting, speaking etc
The end of 'City Lights' will always make me cry. The end of 'The Circus' will always lift my heart!

the ending is quite sad, tho... he's so lonely...
I'm glad to posses a small collection of his films...
GENIUS!!!!!!!
Thats the end of a chapter in my life. Usually i sit and conclude the events , keeping optimism.
i have to be honest he is my true and favorite actor of all time. :)
Great !!!!!
Simply Perfect , geniuously...
@CharlieChaplinsAngel If this scene doesn't lift one's heart NOTHING will!
i have to be honest he is my true and favorite actor of all time
never'' the bitterness'' of an human beeing impressed on screen such as........immortel and the last poet that illuminated the world
My girl just left me today for another country, and this makes me feel good.
Having this on with the old 1911 effect is fun.
What I pulled from this ending is...there are many new acts, there are many GREAT acts, but there is only ONE Charlie Chaplin
