My question to you however is just because you can now afford to own an Aston Martin Vantage, can you still afford to maintain one, and more importantly is it even worth it? Well luckily for you pretty much everything that could have gone wrong with my Aston Martin Vantage did so I tell you first hand all the maintenance costs associated with ownership from parts to labor regarding the 5 most common issues you should be ready for!

I have one here in the uk. Dont be too scared on prices. Parts are expensive, but because of that small companies have popped up that fix lights / modules etc for a fraction of the price.
Door struts £20 each (genuine + £30 fitting at local mechanic.
Just avoid main dealers and these can be reasonable to live with.

That looks like a 2007. You said early 2000's. I paid $20k. For a 2008 roadster. With 18k miles. I work on the car myself.

No. Electrical nightmare. You just have to spend time and money.
I love mine - British version of a Shelby Mustang. I love the sound, the analog everything, the machined aluminum analog gauge cluster and the looks. The electrical system however (like a lot of British cars), is based on several sub-atomic particles yet to be discovered. The good news is the unlike the super cars of today where you cannot even get to the engine, once you swing up the 2 acre hood, you have a normally aspirated V8 that 's yours to wrench on. These are the last of the exotics that you take care of yourself and if you are a car guy, you will love it!
My favourite car, I am purchasing a Vantage S actually. Your Vantage is a 4.3 not really known for its fiability. After 2012 the Vantages were upgraded and the 4.7 V8 was better. More expensive but without any major problems.

Love the video. Exactly the kind of input I need. I was/am tempted by one I've seen pop up this week and why I'm looking for this kind of info. I rarely impulse buy and am really close. But I'm not one who likes unreliable cars or something with too much maintenance overhead or at least that I can't do. My Z3 has given me a little, but the costs are within my pain threshold, which is what you're talking about here. I think the Aston Martin Vantage is probably outside my comfort zone . . . .. BUT I'M STILL WAYYY TEMPTED! ;)

The moral of your story: buy the best one you can find and keep $20k put aside for the 'what ifs' - or 'whens'.
bought a 13 year-old vantage and drove it off the lot and continued for another 5000 miles over the next two weeks without mishap. eventually i replaced the thermostat, door struts, brake pads and tires (all original) for about $500 total. but don't take this thing to an aston martin dealer and say something to the effect, "take a look at her and tell me what's wrong", because they'll find something very wrong and expensive to fix on it, i'm sure.
and BTW not that i've had to replace mine, but the ridiculously tall reverse gear makes it a snap to burn up the clutch plate in no time. i'll have to verify this again, but i'm pretty sure that at idle this car will go about 15 MPH in reverse.
Really funny but very useful video. I had a 2005 DB9 for 5 years and 43,000 miles. Daily driver. Only 2 $3000 plus trip to Aston dealer. Did most of my maintenance. Sold it and could not get Aston out of my head. Three years later bought a 2011 Rapide and agree it is one of the worlds best looking car that has stellar performance. Worth the PITA

I know that looks and the Aston name counts for a lot but if you worried about costs, why not go with a Jaguar XKR or XKR-S? They are also big, beautiful and powerful English sportscars/GTs. They are pretty rare and the original 4.3 V8 Vantage and the 4.2 XK are pretty similar. And if you want power the supercharged 5.0 V8 XKR, XKR-S and the XKR 575 are comparable to the the V12 Vantage.
That exhaust is pure bliss❤️
I know you're not the right person to ask because you don't even change the wiper blades yourself (no offense, if you can afford to pay someone else to do it for you then why wouldn't you), but is it possible to do some of the maintenance yourself? For regular same year cars you can pretty much do everything yourself. Yes, it requires tools, but it pays off to do those things.
I can’t even wipe my own bum either but yes good point this video is to show you the worst case scenario costs with deprecated exotics. I always advise everyone to use their brains search eBay and do what you can by yourself.

I'd do most stuff like you and take it to the dealership and I'm jealous right now. But I'm also generally curious because you said the doors had to be coded and stuff like brakes definitely will need to be coded again it's just a matter of how many things will require a code and stuff.

I could relate to a lot of that. I bought a 2008 earlier this year and have been working on the car myself. A lot of parts are fortunately shared with Fords, Jags and Volvos of that era when AM was owned by the Ford group and it was because of that that actually reliability when up as Ford set the same reliability standards as any other of their cars at the time.

@@vtecboi18 yes, they are actually not too bad. The AM community is great and you can get a lot of support in forums. My Volvo for example has been much harder to work with because it has too many electric components.

I had a 2007 manual roadster for 3 years and I loved it - but I was a little afraid of the bills it could so easily generate. I had to sell it to buy a flat but the sale fell through and now can't justify the cost of another. I just wish I had kept mine. I loved it and fully understand where you are coming from. Thanks man, I absolutely adore my 2013 manual v8 vantage coupe. Can't think of anything better and have been driving it for 2.5 years since I bought it. Nothing else can compare. Maintenance cost is the price for joy and that's really worth it, since it wouldn't depreciate much more.

Have you thought of a late 90's even early Jaguar XK8R. Great cars.
replaced thermostat ($15), front & rear brake pads ($85), door struts ($60), battery ($185), added bluetooth ($120), full set of tires ($395) and engine air filters ($27) myself. added up it ain't much... and i don't blast the headlights or taillights with a pressure washer or let it sit out in the rain. hasn't cost any more or less, IME, to maintain than my 2001 dodge ram pickup truck which involved a new headliner, tires, brakes, shocks, two waterpumps(!) and an entire dashboard.

Damn this was a good video. But , give out some clues where you can find and buy from third parties parts like brake pads or clutch repair etc. And I don't mean ebay. I mean let us know a brand you've tried for brake pads with the specific part no etc.

But keep in mind this is an British exotic, not quite as easy as an old American car
Not to mention parts are more expensive, being replaced more often, harder to find, easier to screw up repairs, etc. Not as simple as you think
This is ridiculous! Why are these cars worth so much when they have less reliability than a damn honda civic! Car manufacturers can do better but they intentionally don’t!

If all you want is utter reliability, and you don't care about appearance, sound, acceleration, handling, and the very high quality leather interior, the fit and finish of the exterior, the stout build quality, don't buy one! The problem with an expensive car is that it remains expensive because they are limited production and parts don't grow on trees. Stay with workaday normal stuff. I didn't buy mine until I was 61, and I drive it like a 30 year old...and LOVE it.
