I am from that part of the world, and I have seen the world, and that damn Red Dirt (clay) is as much a part of me as anything else. When I get to missing my people back in Alabama, I can count on this song to take me back there to walking barefoot down an old red dirt road with my brothers and friends. This song really gets the desperation, the fear of being left in a small backward world, but a kind of lingering appreciation for from where one comes . Much love to all!

From Emmylou Harris herself - the background to this song on her website: "I am very, very inspired by the sound of words, and the names of places are so melodic and beautiful," she said. "I was passing through Meridian on my way down to record in New Orleans and that's what started it."
"But what really took it over the edge for me was on a night off in New Orleans we went to see Boys Don't Cry," Emmylou continued. "It unnerved me, not only because of the violence and homophobia, but also because of the underlying theme of how trapped those young people were. We all come into this world with so much potential and so many dreams. Who knows why some people escape and other people don't? The key idea is in the lyric, 'There won't be any mentions on The News of the World.'"
Emmylou told the story of the song to American Songwriter magazine: "I had driven to New Orleans with my dog Bonaparte and I passed the sign for Meridian, and I started making rhymes in my head. So I had this rhyme scheme but I didn't know what it was about. You get crushes on words and then the rhymes come. Anyways, right after I got there, I went to see the movie Boys Don't Cry. This story about the lost lives of these young people with nowhere to go and it turns into such negative things …"
"I've had this incredibly blessed life, but I created this character who'd had all of these hopes … and I just made this story up inspired by my remembrances of the south. I also imposed the lives of these kids from Boys Don't Cry. Who knows where these songs come from? It's such a mystery to me. Sometimes, I think, 'God, I really wrote that?'"
A stunning, sad song, about everyday life in America.

I once heard Emmylou talk about this song as it relates to her. She explains...I was not a red dirt girl myself. This song brought up memories of the south ( Alabama), where she was born. But she came from a military family, her father was a Major in the Marine Corps., and her parents moved a lot. She was a small child when they moved and lived in NC, VA and Md. As she states, she got the words in her mind while driving by Meridian on her way to New Orleans. She proved yo be a great song writer.

As a 19 year old, I got to see her several times before she was "discovered", playing at the Childe Harold in D.C., near Dupont Circle, in the very early '70s. There were about 30 people in that little club,
and, of course, all of us guys had a crush on her. My buddy lived near her parents out in Howard County. Still go see her when she is on tour.
She's gone a long ways from that little club, as have all of us.

The years pile up quick, don't they?
It really floors me sometimes, when I think of an event like you mention, that I remember so clearly that it seems like yesterday, then start adding up how many years it was since it happened.
...then of course I see a video like this one, and the time is obvious, and written on people's faces.
Getting old sucks, I don't care what anybody says.

Got way too drunk at Childe Harold many years ago, but it closed for good more than a decade ago. It lived from 1967 to 2007, not bad for a restaurant, most close in fewer than five years.

memories memories! I was a regular at Childe Harold - loved that place - lived up on U street and used to hang at CH and Stetsons...long gone days, but wonderful to hear Emmy Lou here - fan of hers for decades! (so many!)

I saw her at the Child Herald in 1971...when she was unknown. Sitting at a table with a friend, I heard her singing folk music..it was a Buffy Saint Marie song. She sounded like Joan Baez and with her long black hair..so beautiful. I asked someone what's her name and found out and remembered. A few years later I heard her sing on an album with Gram Parsons and I said...dammit...its her. I went out and bought the album "Grevious Angel". Now I have most of her albums and have been in love with her since 1971. I saw her once more after that and hope to see her again so I can tell her my story. She is awsome.

The honest intimacy of Emmylou's songs is so expressive of the human condition, the human emotion, and the human heart. She saw this in many of Gram's songs and became closer to her audience even as the "country radio moguls" dismissed her. She is so genuine in her writing that you feel like a close friend whom she just shared with a most personal secret or feeling. In this day of division...isn't it nice to find someone you can share this life with? (And Emmylou Harris is always there for you...singing her song "just for you.")

I had never heard this until I got into ‘First Aid Kit’ and You tube put the song up, their cover is amazing! Beautiful song. Whilst in the states when married to a Missouri gal i realised the power of country songs, they all tell a story! Emmylou is the Queen of country! Always brings a tear to my eye..................
