I'm so blessed to have been able to watch him in-person for his entire career. During so, so many bad seasons, he was the only thing worth watching on the field, and even when there was nothing left to play for, he was always out there beating the hell out of the ball. In his prime, he could have taken a huge payday and gone to New York or Boston or Los Angeles, and maybe have got a ring somewhere... but he stayed in town for us. He wanted to be a Padre, and there isn't a fan in San Diego (or transplanted like me) who doesn't love him with all his heart for it. In my 42 years on this planet, there are only 3 celebrity deaths that have ever legitimately brought me to tears: Fred Rogers, Jerry Coleman, and Tony Gwynn -- and Gwynn hit me hardest of all of them. Thank you for this beautiful tribute.
