  • Respected as a gifted hitter and beloved by contemporaries, 20 Hall of Fame seasons in San Diego earned Tony Gwynn the nickname "Mr. Padre." The 15-time All-Star had a career .338 average, 19th all-time and the highest by any Major Leaguer since Ted Williams, as well as 3,141 hits. With a National League-record eight batting titles, the annual NL award now bears his name. Gwynn's unwavering loyalty to the Padres and his undying devotion to the San Diego community further cemented his standing as Mr. Padre and one of the greatest ambassadors the game of baseball has ever known.

I once saw Tony at the old Tower Records in the college area around 1990. I was browsing the vinyl records and he came up next to me and grabbed a record. The cashier asked for an autograph and he kindly obliged. I watched him leave to see what kind of car he was driving, and saw him drive away in a small Dodge/Chrysler. He was a humble guy. I later learned that he was thrown out of that day’s game, for arguing a call with the umpire. He must’ve stopped at the record store on his way home. I can’t recall Tony being ejected from a game other than that one. Tony was always respectful, so I’m sure whatever the call was, it must’ve been a bad one.

San Diego sports fans really haven’t had a lot to be proud of over the years but Gwynn is the exception. That was our dude and we’d take him over anyone else in the game. He means so much to our city and he is greatly missed. Once a year on his birthday the local sports radio station here devotes pretty much the entire day to listeners who can call in and share their Tony Gwynn stories. I shit you not, everyone who listens in will tear up and cry at some point. He was that special to us and we’re lucky to have his son as part of the team radio broadcast.

Cancer robbed the game of a great hitting mind. Imagine what kind of hitters he could have coached through the years if he could have had the chance to impart the subtleties of being a great hitter: the film study, the work ethic, studying pitchers. The rest is natural abilities, but he worked himself into being great as much or more than any of his contemporaries.
