I'm from a city of 100 000 people in Sweden. We have 1 professional team in Swedish Allsvenskan, and at least two semi-professional teams in lower divisions. Then we have 20-30 clubs in the lower amateur leagues. On the local level, a derby is my village (5k pop) against the neighboring village team (10k pop).
Here most clubs have both male and female teams, a youth academy, and several youth teams (elite as well as non-elite ones). Many have teams in several sports (e.g. ice hockey, bowling, bandy, eSports, etc). Most teams were originally founded by students or workers.

yes is theoretically possible to win cl and get relegated, but the level required to win cl is so high that even if you play with half squad, you're probably gonna get enough points to finish your league at least in the top half

well, the champions league didn't exist that long so... but NĂŒrnberg, comes close to that, i mean, just a few years after winning the europa-cup '63, they ended up getting relegated as reigning german champion... a nine times league champion with a europa-cup win just five years prior to go down counts as one of the biggest sporting debacles in football history.

If a club wins the champions league they get placed in the next one automatically without needing to be in the top 4 in their league, if a club wins the europa league they get promoted to the champions league next season. so yes a club can be relegated and still play in the champions league, one of those two scenarios need to happen tho

Greece winning the 2004 Euro was heartbreak for Portugal, they lost the final to underdogs while hosting the tournament itself. It was also a heartbreak for a 19 year old Cristiano Ronaldo, it would have been Portugal's first major trophy, tho the first trophy came 12 years later in 2016 when Portugal won the Euro 2016 against France on extra time (Portugal being underdogs in that match especially when Ronaldo was injured in the first 30 mins of the match)

There seems to be a tremendous misunderstanding about what the World Cup is, and what FIFA is. FIFA is the "federation of football federations," meaning that it is the world federation of the continental football federation. Each continent has its own "federation of football associations" - UEFA for Europe, CONCACAF for central and north America, CONMEBOL for South America, CAF for Africa, and so on (6 in total, as Australia is part of the Oceania one). Each continental football federation is a "federation of national associations," as each nation has its own football association.
Thus, the national football association is the body regulating and organizing all football competitions within that country (nation). This includes, of course, the league system (all the divisions) in that country.
The continental football association (whose members are the national football associations) is in charge with regulating and organizing all continental level competitions, be it inter-club (i.e. between clubs form different countries on that continent) or inter-country. Thus UEFA organizing both the Champions League, the Europa League, and the Conference League (which are Europe-level club competitions), as well as the UEFA Cup (which is between national teams, and happens every four years). Now, to participate in the UEFA Cup, given that places are limited, national teams take part in a two-year qualification series, and it's only the national teams that qualify from those that take part in the UEFA Cup. This is also why the UEFA CUp is , after the World Cup, the most prestigious national team competition - because of the general level of football throughout Europe, and that just some of the teams qualify.
Then, FIFA, which is the world level federation of football federations, is in charge only with organizing world-level football competitions - ie only the World Cup (which is played by national teams). (Of course, don't forget that there are football competitions, at all these levels, for women, for U21, for U19, for U17 etc ; but let's stick with the grown-ups, and men.) Now, to get to participate in a World Cup, given that the spots are limited, teams need to qualify, which they do by playing qualification tournaments organized separately in each continent. This, because there are a number of spots reserved for each continent, within the spots at the World Cup. Now, due to the global development of football, the level and quality of the sport, and the interest for it, has grown steadily, on all continents. To reflect this, FIFA started allocating more World Cup spots to the other continents, besides Europe and South America - especially Asia and Africa. But remember, the number of World Cup spots is severely limited for each continent, so even qualifying to the World Cup is a great achievement. (There are legendary football nations that have not qualified for a long time. And Italy, for example - Italy! a giant of the sport! - has missed out participating in the World Cup two times in a row now! Which is basically a national tragedy there.) USA is very fortunate in this regard, because in order to win the CONCACAF spots at World Cup it is playing in one of the weakest continental federations (second weakest, after Oceania) - where the only serious rival is usually Mexico (and yet US managed to not qualify many times). (Note that the host country always qualifies a priori, so for 2026 this will not be an issue. But otherwise it would be.) The hardest to qualify for the limited WC spots is from UEFA, of course.
Finally, I should add that, being the global body of the sport, FIFA is also in charge with setting the general rules of the organization of the sport (but remember, FIFA is not some floating entity from the outside, but is like the world congress of the sport, as it is made of all the football associations of the world, and they all get to vote - and all major decisions are taken with approval of the general assembly of FIFA, which is made of all the national federations.
So, when Corey asked, what can FIFA do to me, I'm an American, that denoted that he still thinks that football (soccer) is still a sport played "elsewhere", and US is separate. Instead, US soccer is part of CONCACAF, which is part of FIFA, and soccer (played anywhere) is part of this global system of the sports. Btw, the same is true for all the global sports - including basketball, hockey etc - they are all part of a global system of associations (eg FIBA for basketball).
And now perhaps you understand that winning the World Cup is such an extraordinary achievement (considering how hard it is to even qualify, and that it only happens every four years), that only 8 national teams have ever won it: (Brazil 5 times, Germany 4 times, Italy 4 times, Argentina 3 times, Uruguay 2 times, France 2 times, England 1 time, Spain 1 time). So any talk of "maybe the US will win the World Cup" is well-nigh touching on the absurd, when you look at all the countries that have been or are superpowers of the sport, and are not listed above. And the World Cup has been going on since 1930.

It is possible to play champions league while in the 2nd division. Currently in Argentina, there's a club (Patronato) who was relegated to the 2nd last season while simultaneously winning the Argentine Cup (not the league). That cup win automatically qualified them to this season's South American Champions League (called Copa Libertadores).

26:58 In Rio de Janeiro, because it's by the sea and have big lakes, boat racing was very popular in the turn of nineteenth to twentyth centurry so three of the four biggest football clubs of the city have "regata" in the name. Actually my team started in 1895 as a boat racing team in the flamengo beach area of Rio de Janeiro so they called themselves "Clube de Regatas do Flamengo" (regatta club of the flamengo), the football of our team just started 17 years later in 1912 when some boat racers that played football at the "Fluminense Football Club", wich is the only one of four big teams in Rio to not have regatta in their name, decided to split up and start a football team within the Flamengo club.

I'm amazed you didn't notice the logo is a fat 26 but because it's elongated it also reads as 2026 if you go from top to bottom, left to right. The plan is to use the black and white version as the base template and then each individual city will be able to add their own color palette, design, and spin on the base logo that is unique to each city and country. Also being simple means it can be reproduced quickly, accurately and easily in murals and t-shirts in the pop culture that surround the event.

For more context on the Europa League, I think the best comparison is the NCAA Tournament and the NIT. Teams who qualify for the Champions League do not play in the Europa League (unless they are knocked out of the Champions League group stage). And now with the Conference League, there’s a sorta third tier below Europa League.
As this relates to the Premier League, the top 4 qualify for CL, 5 and 6 go to the Europa league, and 7th place goes to the Conference League. The FA Cup winner also gets a Europa League spot, and the League Cup (Carabao Cup) winner gets a Conference League spot. Most countries’ leagues do not have as many qualifying slots for the CL, Europa, and Conference as England does. Other top leagues like Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga, and Ligue 1 also get more qualifying slots than most smaller leagues!

Tho they didn't get relegated in the league but they would have been kicked out of the league if they finished bottom 3. You should check their 2012 champions league run, its insane!

The winner of a country's cup qualifies for the Europa League (or the new Europa Conference League), and there have been occasions when a team wins the Cup and ends up playing European football, but gets relegated in the same season. I can't remember a specific instance of a team playing in the Champions League and getting relegated in the same season; teams usually fire managers if they're performing that badly when the expectations are so high. The only exception I can think of is teams who were relegated as a punishment for some sort of cheating eg. match-fixing, financial irregularities etc, but obviously that wasn't a performance based flop.

  • @joshualiley

If you're able to watch it, the Championship playoff final is happening on Saturday, it's known as the richest game in football even though it's second tier because of the massive financial gain of getting promoted to Premier League (I believe it's about ÂŁ180 million).
This year, it's happening between Coventry City (my local team) and Luton Town. 5 years ago, both teams were in League 2 (the 4th tier) and now one of the 2 will be in the Premier League next season. This is a meteoric rise, and when Americans are taught about the sport, this theoretical rise is often dismissed as almost impossible. Luton Town were actually in the National League 9 years ago, which is the 5th tier, the one Wrexham just won this year, so their rise is even bigger. Both teams have only lost 1 game since mid February, a run lasting 16 matches each at least. Both teams are (apparently) within the lowest 5 wage bills in the league, showing you how well they're both performing in comparison to how they would be expected to. Whichever side wins will be a fairytale story no matter what.
Coventry began the season on a massive losing streak. In the first 10 games, they only won once, were dead last 4 points behind 2nd bottom and 6 points behind the nearest team not in the relegation zone. The season started in August, and the first time they were out of the relegation zone was in November. Their home pitch had been used for the rugby at the commonwealth games in the summer, so the pitch was churned up and not suitable to play on, so had to postpone games and ground share in some instances just to make it through the season. Half way through the season, the owners of their stadium, Wasps rugby club, went into administration and Coventry City's deal to play football at the stadium came into question, but fortunately, Mike Ashley (Newcastle's old owners) bought the stadium and struck a deal to allow them to continue playing there. After all this happening, they did incredibly well to finish the season in 5th place and make it to the playoff final.
While Luton's season has been less dramatic, they finished 3rd, building on last season's result where they finished 6th and lost in the playoff semi final. They have an old fashioned stadium located right next to the houses, if you've been following football social media, you'll have seen that you have to go through someone's back garden to get into the away section of the stadium. It will be the smallest stadium to have ever hosted a Premier League match if they get there, however it's that old and they've risen up the divisions so quickly that it is in serious need of renovation and does not currently meet Premier League stadium requirements; they will have 3 months and have to spend about ÂŁ10 million just to get the stadium ready for next season if they do end up winning. Obviously, they will get a lot of prize money for making it so the money shouldn't be a big issue, but they're already building a new stadium and it won't be ready for 1-2 more years, so it would be a bit of a waste. However, the current stadium itself is a classic style British football stadium, and so it will be a shame once they move out; these style stadiums in the middle of a housing estate really are the heart and soul of British football culture, that's being lost because teams need up to date and larger stadiums that can no longer be built in the city and often end up on the outskirts instead.
Most neutrals really are struggling to predict the winner of the game, Luton are slight favourites with the bookies based on their finishing position in the table, however Coventry have recent experience with winning finals at Wembley, and both sides can defend incredibly well. Of course, being from Coventry, I'd love Coventry to go up, but I don't mind Luton going up as well because they were in similar circumstances over the past few years.

So yes, you can bomb out and still be in a top competition in Europe.
Because you qualify the prior season lots of things can change by the time you're competing
In fact it's very common for non-top 4 teams to sneak into champions league for a season and the additional travel and games burns them out and they drop to middle table or lower the following season.

The problem I think with the American system and why it’s hated outside of America is people see it as just a money thing. When I go to a football game I don’t need constant breaks I don’t want to see a marching band or a T-shirt launcher nor do I want half time shows, it makes the sport just lose its value with football for us I go to the game I watch the game the fans sing chants through the 90 mins and can have displays before that’s where the entertainment comes from, the fans make it. Also the community behind the teams just ain’t there in America compared to here u grow with ur team it’s like a religion I want to watch what I worship basically😂 not see any other stuff on the side

The soccer / football thing is always funny to me as it was the English who coined the word soccer as a shortening of 'Association Football' which itself was a term to differentiate the sport from Rugby Football at the time. It's a word that was used commonly in England right up into the 90's and early 2000's, yet now it's this bizarre reason to have a little fun with xenophobia. I think Americans and others who use the word get the last laugh out of this one as those who use it to insult others don't have any clue of its history and roots.

If you want to know how it's like to create a club, i think you should do some research about LAFC (Los Angeles Football club) the club was created in 2017 or 2018 i believe, but i think you would need a lot of money, of autorisation, probably players who can attest they will want to play in your club or something, and the biggest "problem" would surely be where/how placing the club in a league

Ya gotta stop referring to the USMNT as a bad team man! Sure we’re not England or Germany or Brazil, but the American team is just about as good as it’s ever been and can legitimately hold our own against most of the world. Are we elite? Not yet. But we’re good. Good with a young team who could develop into great. There have been plenty of US men’s teams that were legitimately bad, but thankfully that’s not the case these days.

Football ⚜ is the greatest sport on the planet and so much of that has to do with the community involvement. (TIFOS) One might say, if you need Tifos to keep the fans entertained, your sport’s crap. That’s a bad take. To be honest, most Americans couldn’t care less about cheerleaders. We would show up with 70,000 fans to watch the game without cheerleaders. In fact, most American football fans look at cheerleaders as a side show which distracts from our sport. I guarantee you, we are more entertained by the play on the field than by the cheerleaders.
As for the ads. Fair point. Our game is not formatted to be continuous. Ad breaks are an enjoyable time for fans to break out their own ball and throw it around in the front yard.
I love that my audience enjoys my videos, but just because I am a fan of football ⚜ does not mean that I hate American sports now. Sorry.
