Jon's 'speed painting' approach he has been developing and showcasing in his YT videos has been the most impactful on my painting of anything anyone else has put on YT. The models looks really good, they don't take too long, the process is more enjoyable to do because it's giving visually striking results quickly so the process of painting is more fun. And the end result has striking visual lighting. I've only been experimenting in trying to copy that style, but once Warcrow drops I want to paint the starter box for that entirely using that method.
I don't know how available it is in the US but "coureur des bois" and "Sortilège" is great stuff and definitely worth keeping stocked in the liquor cabinet
I agree with Jon - it was great that they had commended artists all stand up at the Golden Demon ceremony, it made the experience way more special to be acknowledged like that. I know some people feel that it “sucks to lose” in front of everyone, but as someone who stood up there with ya and lost, that’s not really where I found that my mindset was. I was just as caught up in the excitement and hype for those around me who were winning, and it was a great motivation to push harder next year!
What’s great about Jon’s painting style he’s developing explained just prior to 51:36 is that “trimming the fat to leave what’s fun” I feel will really do wonders to keep up momentum and get more minis completed which is really the goal of “speed painting” anyway right?
Saw all the models, thought they were great. Congrats to all who entered for getting to that point. The con itself, had a blast playing, got some good deals, had fun with friends. Avoided the drama and stupidity and have since by not being in forums, etc. Congrats on what you both have accomplished, keep going, keep it fun.
My paint selections have just gotten smaller and more selective over the years. Certain colors from certain brands and it's totally random. Long gone are the days of paint scheme formulas. But that comes in time and confidence... or maybe because I just don"t give a ...... what anyone thinks! you go Jon!
As a miniature nerd turned fine artist, I appreciate any attempt to "legitimize" our artform in the eyes of the greater public. I think we could be on the cusp of a miniature "renaissance", because the caliber of work being made by miniature hobbyists is world class, and people will take notice with enough exposure. Sorry for all of the "air bunnies". TLDR, I'm excited about the future of miniature art.
Yes, I don’t have huge plans to play underworlds. I usually buy them as proxies or sometimes the points just workout to bring them as pet units. My first Idoneth 2k game I brought the crab warband with the goal of getting a crab kill
In regards to underworlds or cursed city units doubling for AoS, it’s a marketing strategy that worked on me. I extrapolated that train of thought to using those models in other games too. That notion just becomes a springboard for ideas on how else i can use those models.
Well red NMM is hard because I don't think there is such a thing as red metal. You can paint metal red, but then it's not gonna reflect light like metal but like the finish of the paint on top of it. The Star Wars imperial guard that's painted plastic really, so it's gonna reflect light like that glossy paint would
For the food situation, my friend and I rode the shuttle that was taking people to and from the other hotel because there were a bunch of restaurants across the street from that hotel lol so we just hopped on the shuttle, ate somewhere, and then hopped back on to the con again
Regarding boxed-game models in big AOS or 40K--the character models in those games should be playable as alternate sculpts for generic characters in AOS and 40K. They don't need specific "epic hero" profiles in the big games--just having alternate sculpts for Vampire Lord or whatever would be FINE. That would let people who want to invest a little bit extra to make their army look cooler do that, without forcing everyone to rush out and buy up models for other games in order to have the most meta list in the big games.
I also feel that base-coating is the least fun part of painting. For cutting base coating out of painting, I've been trying to get good with the airbrush and do like Marco Frisoni does to create base coats and volumes with the airbrush and then use the brush to define the boundaries and punch up or down the highlights/shadows
I'm a fan of Underworlds and the cross over to AoS and WC gave me a lot of confidence that the models I was buying were really worth it and I would get a lot of use out of them. That being said not every warband needs to be a special unit in AoS. Some of favorite warbands, The Sepulchral Guard and Sons of Velmorn, could just be alternate sculpts for deathrattle or grave guard and I'd still be happy.
There are certain skirmish game (killteam) kits that I have bought solely for 40k. I haven't played much killteam, but do really enjoy the aesthetic adds some of the kits add to my army.
I enjoy when the smaller game kits from say Kill Team are close enough I can proxy them into 40k to swap out for a boring battleline unit. If they give them a ruleset that is basically a copy of a normal unit (with like 6 less range but 1 more strength or whatever), they will end up being so close overall in loadout that I can use them as a proxy. For instance, I picked up two sets of Krieg when they were cheap as leftovers from the killteam box that ended up being trenchcoat wearing standard infantry. So in that respect I don't care if they have rules really, but I like the effects of making them fit the rules has.

The compatibility of small kits definitely affects my purchasing decisions. I bought a Votann Kill Team and it convinced me to start the army. I would have bought the Gellerpox Infected kill team if I liked the mechanics at all just because that's another army I'm already working on. Even if I don't use them between games I like having the faction theme across different games. and imagine them being part of the same army. I think lots of them would be fine as characters rather than a unit, you just couldn't take all of them if they did that.
I started playing Underworlds during the pandemic as my first GW game. One of my deciding factors is that I might be able to use those warbands as a way to transition into AoS in the future. It turns out that never happened, but it absolutely was part of my buying decision. Overall I agree that the game would be far better off if Warcry and Underworlds and random board game stuff didn't get AoS rules or maybe they were sent directly to Legends or something.

I am 100% encouraged to buy those kits for both games. But the thing about it though with KillTeam anyways, is those units are usually pretty good or needed. Like Ork Kommandoz and Death Korp of Krieg? I mean how many of us have wanted plastic Kriegsmen forever? In AoS though, yeah they always seem to be pretty mid.

It'd be like we treated pale blue as a different colour, and when someone painted something blue people would comment "well, looks like you went a little too pale blue in that blue" We are more aware of it because it has a name and is generally treated as a different colour, even though technically it's just a tint of red.

Not that I was there, but after listening to this years TUP Live, I agree with Jon's comments about that other podcast that did live shows. Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend also does live shows with a similar style, where there's crowd interaction at the beginning or end, but the main meat is still an interview. Same with The Empire Film Podcast. They put on a fun show, but it's not too dissimilar to what the listeners are used to. They listen because they like the show, and I think that's the draw of a live version. Plus, if TUP Live was more structured like a regular episode it might take a lot of the unknown out of the equation because you'd have the majority of it planned out. Just my two cents that no one asked for... Also, was there backlash to Jon's Temu video??? This is the first I'd heard of that! What was the perceived issue?
The norwegian Melkesjokolade is the king of European milk chocolate. And kvikk lunsj is so much better than kit kat. But as another norwegian i probely biased. And the brick is a norwegian brown cheese, called Brunost and is a sweet carmamelized fudge cow/goat milk cheese, and is fricking amazing on waffels

I think the whole AI-backdrop hubbub is fucking ridiculous. Next year people will paint over that generated image print with some acrylics and say nothing about the AI generation in there. No one will flip out and shit will still get in the competition. And there's no way to prove that didn't happen. No judge will demand that you scrape some paint off so we can see the pixels!
I dont think it was bad for him to use AI art specifically. I think it was more the fact that it was a printed image. Granted, it brings up a different topic if we should we ban decals if printed images are used?

40k and kill team has the opposite problem of AoS and warcry/underworlds, they update core 40k units and release them in expensive kill team boxes
Chaos was like 60-70% warcry/underworld war bands. so i had to get them to run my army. as they didnt release stuff out of the starter army box

I think the whole AI-backdrop hubbub is fucking ridiculous. Next year people will paint over that generated image print with some acrylics and say nothing about the AI generation in there. No one will flip out and shit will still get in the competition. And there's no way to prove that didn't happen. No judge will demand that you scrape some paint off so we can see the pixels!
I dont think it was bad for him to use AI art specifically. I think it was more the fact that it was a printed image. Granted, it brings up a different topic if we should we ban decals if printed images are used?
