San Francisco Cable Car - Complete Ride on Powell-Hyde line

- A complete journey on the scenic Powell-Hyde cable car line in San Francisco, filmed from the front of the running board. Starting at the Powell Street turnaround at Market St the cable car travels through the heart of the city as it climbs and descends Nob Hill and Russian Hill on its way to Fisherman's Wharf.
Highlights include passing Union Square, the crooked Lombard Street and a great view of Alcatraz in the Bay with the sound of a fun and vocal crowd onboard. For purity I have not edited out the stops, but you can skip the longer stops if you like.
I missed SF so much! Thank you for wonderful time. 😃👏🙏
That cable car bell sound is just Priceless!!
YESSSS
LMAO that crowd from Chicago is having so much fun. Love it.
I'm from England and I've been to San Francisco only once and I gotta say it was a very lovely city - would love to go back if I had the time and money
San Francisco - the city of my life! The city where I meet God! Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
Excellent video! You captured the cable car experience perfectly thanks. As a native San Franciscan now retired to Palm Springs and sheltered in place due to the coronavirus, this has been a wonderful escape. Love and miss The City, warts and all. Everyone stay safe and healthy!
Thanks William. What a place to have lived, and now you have retired in another wonderful place. I wish I was in your shoes :)

During Corona, this video is so nice to see!
I writing a script about two people in San Francisco taking a ride on a cable car and this was exactly what I needed as I am not from that area. Awesome. Thank you.
I love it! I love it!! I want to visit San Francisco so bad for years!!! Ik i won't ever be that lucky SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!!!😁😂
I've lived here since I was 10 (46 years ago!) and still get a kick out of riding these. When I'm needing to get to Van Ness Ave from the waterfront and I'm not in a hurry, I'll take the cable car instead of the subway. This simple trick of filming a whole trip real-time works because you get the full effect: the cable noises, the tourist banter, the pedestrians and cyclists, the sudden turns and ascents, the quick glimpses of skyscrapers, distant hills and Bay. Nice job: more than a few locals enjoy seeing the City fresh, through a visitor's eyes.
Thanks dudleycunningham, great to hear from a local who can be a tourist too :)
During 1982-84, I saw them completely rebuild the tracks, and slot conduits on all cable car lines. There had been discussion for a number of years to do so, because the rails were getting all bent, re-welded, and sheave pulleys bent out of alignment. The real motivation to get the system up and running was the choice of San Francisco for the 1984 Democratic convention at Moscone Center. You can see cleanly-poured concrete casings around the tracks, embedding the slot and cable cavity. Photos of the system prior to 1982 show asphalt poured directly up against the side rails, along with bad uneven patches where the old brick supporting walls had collapsed.
Thanks K, very interesting
Great video.!
I am an Indian,San Francisco one of the best of USA,I had been in this cable car, thanks for sharing this beautiful vdo to revive my memories of this beautiful clean city.God bless you.
The cable car is a great ride isn't it? Glad this brought back such good memories for you Suresh
I want to go there so bad...I live on East Coast...love the West Coast. Better atmosphere.
As a young rail enthusiast from NZ, riding this is something I always dream about. Love anything that rolls on rails and SF looks to be a stunning city. Thanks for uploading the full ride
There’s two more lines which cross this line… the California line (California Street), and the Mason line, which turns off of Hyde line in Chinatown. The Mason line travels on lower streets, but goes through North Beach neighborhood down Columbus Street and ends up in a different spot in Fisherman’s Wharf. So there’s still more for you to see!
@@k.h.4698 I have visited since I wrote this comment. Especially enjoyed the cable house....and a ride to Fisherman's Wharf at night was one of my best memories from the whole trip. Thanks for the reply
Nice sunny day, too. Beautiful!
Not only is this beautiful it’s so helpful as I plan what cable car to get on and helps me get my bearings of the city, thank you!
Thank you and I'm so glad you've found it useful
Beautiful and exciting San Francisco. I lived there for four years. I miss it.
You are so lucky to have those four years to always remember. I miss not being there!
Jeez, it´s just one year ago that I and my son have made exactly that trip. Awesome memory. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks Don, sounds amazing, good memories
This is great! It brought back such great memories of my vacation with my husband on our 20th anniversary some 20 years ago. We rode the cable cars every day to the Wharf and back to the other end where our motel was a few blocks from Market street. We are small town Oregon folks so this was something really special. :)
I love this video. I was on the tram with them all. Laughing, chatting. I smiled all the while I watched it. Love Sanfrancisco too.
Yeah, there was a real sense of camaraderie. Great little trip, never forget it.
My 1st time viewing San Francisco, thanks for doing the ride and better yet for sharing. From New England to San Francisco.cool!.
This should have 10,000,000 views.
It's better than most Hollywood movies.
Thanks a lot for sharing that amazing ride. That reminds me so many wonderful moments...
Thanks Erwan, great to hear

Other time, pretty the same tour, and still the same car..!!
Went to San Francisco in February...my first time in the US x fell in love with this beautiful city x had such fun on the cable cars ❤
There was a time when SF considered getting rid of the cable cars, but Diane Feinstein, mayor of SF at the time, chose instead to completely close down the system for 3 years revamping everything and keeping it alive. Can you imagine SF without cable cars? ♥
Actually, Diane Feinstein’s mayoral administration was involved in A case of “restoration” rather than saving. However, the real case of saving the cable cars happened a few decades earlier, by a grass-roots “save the Cable Cars Committee”, led by a Freida (?), at a time in America when most streetcar systems were replaced by diesel buses. The real savior of the cable cars and remaining streetcar lines was the topology of San Francisco hills itself, which are too steep for diesel buses. You’ll notice that buses which do run up the steep hills are all electric trolley buses.
Great job thank you for sharing this video I worked operating this cable cars before retirement and I miss talking to people from around the world that came to San Francisco and took a ride before heading home THANK YOU.
My favorite City. Love the cable cars. Enjoyed this so much. Almost like I was there. I miss it so much. Thank you so much.
This is so beautiful city!!!
Thanks for the up close view of a city I so wish I could visit. Navigating it makes the point that if you drive in the city, make sure your breaks are in good working order!
GO GIANTS!
Turn into the kerb!
One illegally parked car on Jackson Street at 5:19. Blue car on right.
San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities all over the world. I've been there twice.
Yes, I love the city too!
I lived right here for 30 yrs,on top of Broadway,l could see my apartment, from cable car it was a very emotional trip for me. I left my 💓 in SFrancisco big time. Sandra.
Thank you Sandra for sharing this. How fortunate you were!
My hometown, 80 years ago. Been there many times since. Always miss it. Many places stay the same.
I'm a San Francisco native, now living in the Paciic Northwest. Enjoyed your video, especially your mention of "famous" Swensen's Ice Cream, which I thought had gone out of business decades ago. My dad was an executive for Swensens in the 1960s.
Thank you. Very interesting to hear your family connection.
Nice video!. I live in Sunnyvale, in the Silicon Valley, and I’ve taken this route many times throughout the years. But the last time I rode it was in 2013. It’s amazing how time flies when you’re hard at work and then Covid hits, then you gotta raise the kids, etc. I think I’m due for another cable car ride soon.
I go to San Francisco twice a year, and never have enough of it.
she's very special.
+babikecap Just watch out for the homeless and derelicts. Certain area are bad and unsanitary... if you know what I mean.
+Christopher Howell yes, I know what you mean. thank you.
what are some bad areas to avoid?
The Union Square and Mid-Market areas.
go do sightseeing in the daytime.
when it's dark, SF is not really recommended to wander around.
Stay away from the Tenderloin district at dark. If you walk on Market st, the Tenderloin district starts from 5th and Turk st.
I have been there from 1978-1981, 1984-1985, 1988-1990, and 1993-1996 when I was in the Navy, when they still had Naval Station Treasure Island, NAS Alameda, NSC Oakland, and Naval Shipyard Mare Island in Vallejo. This really brings back some great memories while I was stationed in the SF-Bay Area, and thank you for posting this.
+joseph williams Happy memories Joseph. You'll have to go back and make some new ones now!
Finally a video with explanations and hints. Excellent!
I love San Francisco. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad to hear that you love San Francisco, but you must remember to NEVER EVER go into neighborhoods filled with weird people (e.g. Tenderloin, Haight/Ashbury, etc.). We also can't forget The Mission. Safety first! I'm not your mom, but I'm here to advise you in the comment boards about neighborhoods that are safe to go in and not safe to go in with and without supervision from your family or friends.
lmfao Haight and Ashbury is okay lol the Tenderloin not so much.
This is a truly amazing video to watch from start to finish. I recall the TV series called the "Streets of San Francisco" which is what got me into watching this grand tour.
Thanks John, it was through movies I was introduced to this city
My favorite cable car ride video.
Thank you for your video. We were there for a few days in May 2016. We weren't there long enough (2 days) and your video reminds of our visit. We want to return with more time to enjoy the city the way it should be. Love San Francisco!
I love San Francisco!!
Rode the Powell- Mason line to the wharf a few days ago. visited sf for the 1st time from Ohio. Awesome fun city and people are generally friendlier than most bigger east coast cities.
Turning a thousand shades of green right now. Love SF!
A wonderful ride ! Thanks for sharing !
I really enjoyed the ride. You picked a lovely day. Thank you.
Nice video and a nice day there.
Enjoyed your video very much. I'm an east coaster, but I've visited San Francisco several times and think it's among the most beautiful cities in the US, set on those hills with the bay on one side and the ocean on the other. Lovely architecture, gardens and green spaces. Rode the cable cars once, and I was amazed by how they climb those REALLY steep hills.
The hills are why it's a cable car and not a trolley.
I did this trip a couple of times when I was in San Francisco and it´s great to keep these memories alive with this Video.Greetings from Düsseldorf, Germany
Wuow is goed San Francisco yo de Holandad muy serca de Alemania una ahora
This is my favorite cable car ride in San Francisco!!!!!!

I often remember those happy days in spring 2001 and 2002... - Thank you for letting me see it again. :)
I haven't ridden this car since the early 70s when I lived here. Still looks the same....Buena Vista at the end of the line on the corner was a great place for coffee and people watching.
Brings back memories of our many trips to SF! Excellent!
I loved this fantastic ride. I like videos like this that allow you to experience other peoples journeys.
Wow! now I'm sure I'm ready to visit San Francisco, great tips!
Miss the cable cars, miss SF, that's cool of you to post this. Right on.
beautiful
I left my heart in San Francisco!
Nice video, thank you for sharing. San Francisco is on my bucket list !
Maria Nater i am going from Amsterdam in 1.5 month!!
Nicely done!
Thank you for a wonderful "ride"! Great, classy and understated video. The best.
Thanks Jose
Beautiful city
Thank you for posting! My daughter and I went to San Francisco several years ago and we took this exact ride! (stayed at the Sir Francis Drake, too) This brings wonderful memories!
Thanks for the ride and mini tour of San Francisco. You did an awesome job filming and pointing out landmarks. I've never been there before so I really appreciated riding along with you. It's a very picturesque city with lots of charm. I was surprised to see how narrow the streets were. I live in a city (other than New Orleans) in Louisiana. But the streets in downtown New Orleans are even more narrow. I've seen the architecture of some of the older dwellings on tv before. But the "bay windows" all over the place would drive me crazy. I'm going to google the history and reason for that architectural style. I think the windows are part of the city's charm though. Lol. Agian, thanks so very much fo sharing!
Thanks T Weston for your interesting thoughts. I keep getting pleasantly surprised at how many people enjoy this simple video. Anyway, it makes me very happy and I appreciate you taking the time to post.
Gladly ride again. Thank.
I miss my city so much, The sights and sounds from this video make me feel less homesick. Thanks so much for posting :)
+MissLynn So good to hear this. I miss it too, just as a tourist!
Thank you. Was just there and I miss it already. Beautiful city 😊
Thanks for the ride, I've toured San Francisco now.. Keep sharing your vid. New friend here.
This was very nostalgic for me; thank you. 😊
Visited San Francisco three times now and without doubt this city holds a special place in my heart , good to see the sights and sounds of this city , thank you .
Great job. Brings back great memories.
Fantastic! Your film allowed me to dream-over here in Germany-of my next visit to SF soon, and at the same time reminds me of past visits there; I only took the cable car ONCE,but your video makes me think I should do as you! THANKS!
+Uli Schneider Good news - do it!
Прекрасная поездка! Замечательные комментарии! Спасибо!
Thanks for putting this on .......reminds me when I was a kid riding the cable cars in SF.
makes me miss SF. Loved the video trip. Thank you!
Great Video!! I enjoy to see how the Cable Car Works!! Tks!!
Yes it is fascinating. Seems so simple really, it just gets pulled along by a cable (but there is much more to it)
Be sure to visit the Cable Car Museum at Mason Street in Chinatown, besides a museum you can see the machinery pulling the three cables under the street and the sheave room where the cables diverge under the street.
I'm glad I chose to watch your video. It was really enjoyable.
+Simply Karmin Thanks, great to know.
Excellent vantage point for the entire ride.
