  • There's no denying that the soft-top surfboard demand is growing in the line-up. At first I thought it was just a fad that would soon fade away, but it's doing just the opposite.
Recently, the team at South Bay Surf Co. reached out to see if I wanted to test a soft-top. I figured this would be a great time to see what the craze is all about, and I had the perfect person to test it out on... Travis Logie.
Our conclusion surprised us. Want to find out more about South Bay Board Co? You can check them out here: www.southbayboardco.com Special thanks to the South Bay Board Co team for sharing their boards with us.
Thanks for watching. I'm Brad Jacobson and I'll sea ya on the sand.

I surfed a Morey Doyle 9’ once in 1983ish at big beach break Westwards, it was a blast pulling into big barrels without having to worry about getting beaned. Now almost 40 years later, I had major hip surgery, complications and it took awhile to get my pop-up back, so took a Catch Surf out to a spot that allowed me to re-hab. Now its a board i think about when picking the quiver for the day, since it elevates the fun of crappy days. My surf skill is advanced, so I just smile at guys who think its a kook board, especially when I’m sitting outside catching sets (with courtesy, of course).

IIRC, Dave Sweet's brother partnered with the actor Cliff Robertson (Kahuna from Gidget) on the production of "pop out" boards back in 1961. I spotted one used (CL) in very nice condition - it appears to have been used a few times and stored up in the rafters for the last 60 years. Thanks,Brad !

Surfing is about having fun. Forget the gatekeepers and purists. Surf your board, surf your break, and surf your heart out.

Funny thing about soft tops and surf shops, the people who buy soft tops and quit were never gonna have a custom quiver. And the people who progress, WILL want a real board eventually.

I’ve gone backwards. I surfed custom shaped performance boards my whole life until last year, now I will choose my 8ft single fin foamie over most of my boards unless the waves are super good. Just makes for longer rides, less overall effort, and it’s not soul crushing if they get damaged.

Ive got 6 boards, one is a softtop (catch surf 8' log) and unless its perfect conditions, the Log is my 1st choice these days. @@sinkorswimcreativemedia8889

Southbay needs to bring back their pro series line of boards. Dunno why they axed them, but if the dims fit you, you can get absolute tank epoxys in that “pro” line.

When I got my first softop (better said, my first board), I got it from a local brand. I always had this let's say "loyalty" to the skateshop I like, I thought the same happened in surfing with local shapers or local shops.

Great video! Just thinking - you might want to play up the “this skeptical surfer tried a softboard” angle for your title. Maybe an actual screenshot of him using it for the thumbnail with the text “and this is what he has to say” (idk just always thinking about this kind of stuff. ❤)

Southbay boards aren't really soft tops like a catch surf or wave bandit- they're definitely a couple of steps up. I have the elephante and the Tortuga and I love them. I surf in South Carolina. Here, if you don't have a soft top, you're not surfing.

  • @anotherworldviewispossible

Not all "soft tops" are created equal.
Wavestorms are largely garbage. Odysea/WaveBandit/Catch Surf-s work really well. And that's two boardmakers with similar technology.
That "soft top" in this episode, was apparently a real epoxy surfboard - with some soft material on the deck. So of course that should ride like a surfboard. "Crime" makes real surfboards, with the same technology, as does Surftech, with their "soft top" line. The county Lifeguards use that brand for their Rescue boards.
You should do an episode where Travis tries some Odysea boards, in good surf.

Have 3 of the South Bay boards. Very nice except for one problem, two of them leaked around the installation point of the vent plugs. The plugs are just glued in with no glass or layering covering the insertion point... a very poor design. Worse, the company did not assume responsibility, citing out of warranty due to time. I would have been fine with that had the board been used extensively, as they did replace the one that was under the warranty time, however the second was barely over the warranty, had been in the water only 3 times, had always been stored inside in its' bag, cared for properly, and was never left out in the sun. As I said, these are nice boards, but if you have one you might want to keep a watch for a leak around the vent plug installation.
