  • Microsoft's new Surface Laptop is thin, beautiful, and pretty powerful. Will the fabric on the laptop deck hold up? Does Windows 10 S really have all the apps you need? Subscribe: goo.gl/G5RXGs

    The fabric is to prevent the use of the ugly rubber protection around the glass display Apple uses. It prevent the screen from cracking when closed with force of when someone put pressure on it. It serves a function purpose, quite genius actually.

    • @abhishekagarwal787
      @abhishekagarwal787 Před 7 lety +16

      Agree. The Screen is Clean, Edge to Edge.

      I don't know what the previous comment was, but From a car perspective that really isn't what alcantara is used for. The material is typically only found in performance cars not for its feel but for its grip strength. It allows seats to grab the driver more in high G turns, you have more grip on the steering wheel. It's not really meant for luxury "fit and feel" purposes. That's why most luxury cars still use leather for their interiors, where that kind of stuff doesn't matter.

    • @Kevin-wv1qf
      @Kevin-wv1qf Před 7 lety +8

      The number of people that upvoted you proves that CZcams commenters are idiots. There is still a protective lip around the screen and the fabric most definitely does not serve that purpose.

    • @zothOne
      @zothOne Před 7 lety +6

      The fabric will only serve to make sure that the laptop does not stay good looking for all that long, it is a severe durability issue.

    • @jeffreylee4208
      @jeffreylee4208 Před 7 lety

      Kaledonia23 Have you seen the surface laptop in real life or have you even watch the launch of the laptop. Microsoft have specifically said no rubber protectors around the display and even if you are that stupid and not get you facts straight before commenting. Using the fabric which is similar to the type cover on the surface pro could also help Microsoft built the brand identity for their hardware line. oh and you probably won't know what brand identity is. It is basically the gut feeling you get even without seeing the logo you have that feeling is by a certain brand, like the apple home button. When you see phone on the street with that perfectly round home button you will know is an iPhone without even looking at the logo at the back. It might have some durability issues but their the type cover on the surface pro uses similar fabric and proven to be surprisingly durable.

      Oba Obateru yeah, it's nice that they added it. But I still feel they should have added a USB c port or another USB a port on the laptop. Since the battery life of the laptop seems to be so good, I don't think many people will be using the charging adapter while using the laptop.

    If alcantara can be on a steering wheel and not wear out why would it on a laptop?

    • @Lucky8s
      @Lucky8s Před 6 lety +14

      Because the amount of time you use it varies. People often use laptops for long periods of time, 5-6 hours some days, maybe even longer. Alcantara steering wheels are generally found on performance cars, and people certainly don't drive those every day for long periods of time.

    The lack of USB-C is a huge mistake and probably the only reason I'll stay away from this. If I spend over 1k on a laptop, I expect it to last at least 3 years. already most phones use USB-C, and in the next 2 years there will be much more. They really messed up. I disagree with Apple going full USB-C, but honestly this is just as bad.

    • @frc.7355
      @frc.7355 Před 7 lety +50

      They made a USB-C dongle for people like you who must love dongles if you currently use USB-C. This is just petty excuse and microsoft is right, imo USB-C isn't massively adopted yet, especially in countries other than the USA. Hence i think it is totally acceptable decision.

    I just purchased this computer today. My Mac book air 2014 256GB crashed twice. They accused me of water damage both times when I did not have a spill. Its likely condensation which is not my fault. Cost of the second repair is over 1000. The cost of extended coverage for my surface is so much less and guess what, it covers water damage. I took coverage for three years. I spent almost 700 dollars just after 2 years repairing my MacBook Pro, and don't want to spend another 1000 plus for second repair.I hope I will never look back. I am so happy also not to deal with Apple spinning wheel of death anymore.

    I don't understand why there is a touchscreen:
    First, using a trackpad instead of touch feature is much faster.
    Second, you cannot rotate the screen or separate the keyboard to get a tablet.
    So, it has to be really unusual and weird to use a touchscreen for anything there. It is just uncomfortable and ineffective.

      USB-C has been out since 2014. That's more than three years already. The only ones pushing it are Apple and its from a position of arrogance. They have a history of pushing certain IO that suits their agenda whether we want it or not and many of those times they have been a failure. Thunderbolt... Apple barely even stocked Thunderbolt drives in their own stores.
      A better question would be will the normal USB still be around in 3 years? Absolutely.

Oh, and yeah, USB-C. So who would have thought, but Apple is the MUCH better value for money here.

    • @ijakinov
      @ijakinov Před 6 lety +9

      Because Macbook Pro is thin and light relatively speaking but isn't in the thin and lightweight class of laptops that sacrifice performance for form-factor. It'd be like comparing a phone to a tablet. They have different goals. You can get an iPad for like $350 that severely outperforms a $600-700 iPhone but the increase cost in the iPhone comes from its ability to pack that much power in such a small form-factor.

    • @LieutenantButtonMasher
      @LieutenantButtonMasher Před 6 lety +14

      The $1299.99 model of the Surface Laptop has 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and an i5 processor. Pretty much the same specs except for the GPU which is, I agree with you, better. But still, some people like Windows more, and these people don't like a locked-down OS like the MacOS. And almost forgot, it's not the dongle life for Surface Laptop users as much as it is for Macbook users, so they have to pay more for peripherals. And you liking Aluminum is your opinion. So in conclusion, fanboy much?

    • @zenryuu7182
      @zenryuu7182 Před 6 lety +1

      Because we're comparing using form factor, not price. The reason this costs more is because they have to pack the tech into a very thin form factor. Using a similar argument to you, you can find a laptop with an i7, 16GB of ram, and a gtx 1060 with all the bells and whistles for cheaper than this laptop. You can't compare the two because they are for completely different markets.

    • @lecorsaire2283
      @lecorsaire2283 Před 6 lety +1

      Hamad Alsayed There’s nothing “locked down” about macOS. You’re confusing it with iOS. You can install whatever the hell you want on macOS. You have the power of the terminal at your disposal. Even Steam is available. You should try it. It has the stability of Linux but with proprietary software and you can dual boot Windows or run it in a VM with the benefit of the superior force touchpad. There is no wasting time running Windows Update and rebooting all the time. No AV software using resources.
      Comparing I/O is even more ridiculous. Do you have any idea how versatile TB3 (40Gbps) with USB-C is? On my 15” MBP I can drive 2 5K displays or 4 4K displays if I want. I can also hook up dual eGPUs. It has USB 3.1 gen 2 (10Gbps), HDMI, TB2, DisplayPort and you can charge the machine from any port on either side. There are very few machines out there with all of this capability.
      Native USB-C external hard drives/SSDs and flash drives have been available for a while now and new peripherals are being released all the time. For the iPhones there is a lightning to USB-C cable. Eventually everything will be USB-C. Not only is it more versatile but it’s also reversible. You’ll never have to make sure you’re plugging it in the right way again. While not every machine needs to have 4 TB3 ports, a good notebook should have at least 1. USB-C doesn’t mean TB3 btw. For example the 12” MacBook with USB-C doesn’t have TB3 and its single port is only capable of USB 3.1 gen 1 (5Gbps). USB-C is a port that will definitely be around for a long time like HDMI has been for all A/V equipment.
