Castle TSM 21 Performance Before And After Tooling Change

  • I recently picked up a Castle TSM-21 pocket hole machine from a small cabinet shop that used to build commercial store fixtures. The equipment and assets of the shop were being sold and liquidated as shop is no longer in business.
The previous owner had it setup for melamine and particle board, and was just using a 2 flute carbide tipped straight bit. After a little bit of initial testing, I knew I would need to invest in some tooling for it. So I replaced the pocket hole router bit with a Whiteside Machine 3 flute up cut spiral rough mill (# RU4000-H), and saw a significant improvement.

It's always amazing what the right tooling does! I used to own a shop that had 2 of these and ran literally millions of holes. Way to go on upgrading to a castle.

Thank you! It was something I had always wanted to do, but it was out of reach in cost because I do this part time. But I'm always looking to upgrade equipment so in the event I go full time I'm setup and ready to go! Thank you!

Great video Scott. I appreciate you taking the time to post videos like these. I watch a lot of channels and it’s hard sometimes to watch channels that just have all brand new shinny tools and shops that don’t look to be ever used. Good job as always.

Thanks! It's an awesome machine! It's taken me a while to produce this content. I've seen some of your content, it's just as good! Keep it up! Scott

I found one of those old PC trim routers new in a box out in a field after a tornado 15 years ago. It sat on a shelf until one day smoke was coming out of the pocket hole machine. I knew I saved it for a reason. I hate it as a trim router so it just sat on a shelf.

Nice video Scott. With the original tooling, the routers seemed to be struggling. Sharp tools make a dramatic difference. I have not been getting notifications and it seems CZcams is actively suppressing notifications of the smaller channels. I have to go manually look through my subscriptions on a routine basis just to see if anything is new. Steve

Hey Steve! Thanks! Yes, tooling makes all the difference! Same here, I don't get near the notifications that I once did. Yes, they are definitely being supprresd. My subscriber's count has been struggling to reach 10k. When I first started posting, my channel grew significantly until I hit around 6-7k, then it slowed down dramatically. This is the reason many channels use clickbait titles and thumbnails to fool the algorithm. I recently saw a video on this, it's sad. Scott

Stick with the porter cable routers as long as you can. I have the Tsm 22 with the bosch routers, it is not an upgrade over the the Tsm 21. I found the Tsm 21 to be a better more reliable machine. Like many woodworking machine manufacturers, Castle products have gotten cheaper as time goes on. That Tsm 21 is a great machine.

Great video! What program are you using on your cabinet renderings?

Thank you! I'm running Mozaik. It's a subscription base software that costs $100 a month for the package I have (Design / $50 + Manufacturing / $25 + Optimizing / $25). It's a pretty power program for the cost and updated are included with the subscription. They also include a copy of SketchUp to have more ability to fine detail the renderings, and for a one time licence purchase of Render Plus Ariel Vision plugin of $100, the renderings really come to life when used in SketchUp.

Lol, thank you! It's something that accrued over time. 25+ years and going strong.
