Though my garden is doing fairly well, I have seen things over the past few years that normally do great for me that are struggling. My raspberries started growing well this year like they normally do and then suddenly up and died.
If people are allowing what they fear others will think to stand in the way of doing what they know is right, they need to set aside their pride and just do it. Down the road they will be glad they did.

Good talk, Danny! Even on a limited income; Even in an urban situation, there are things one can do to prepare for the coming hard times. I'm amazed at some of my friends who have not done one thing to prepare. They buy prepared foods full of preservatives, convenience foods, and things that have very little nutritional value and whine that they're too tired from working to cook. Most have no canning equipment, dehydrators or vacu-sealers, and only the small freezers attached to their refrigerators. If they're lucky, they might have enough canned/packaged stuff to last about a month. They think I'm crazy for baking my own bread, making cheese, making jerky and granola bars, keeping chickens in my back yard and letting them destroy my lawn back there, and "wasting time" planting vegetables when they are plentiful in the stores. They have no idea how much food I've been able to can from my garden, nor do they know that I can store eggs. The money I save on groceries goes to the equipment and supplies I need to grow and preserve more of my own food. None of them have seen my pantry or other stores. I have encouraged people I know to prepare and to learn how to garden, can, and preserve. Some of them comment that "when the world goes to Hell, I'm coming to stay with you." No. They're not.

Carol Avant Wow u know ive had people make that comment, " Im coming to stay w u if SHTF!" I believe in sharing however i didnt work so u could play and now u can just rest easy from my efforts and expense😬. Loved ones and family i "try" to prep for other than who's in my home, lazy "friends" well thats another issue. Sweat equity comes to mind, but even in a food crisis theres simply not enuf to go around.

andria blue, I'm sorry but I would have to include lazy family members too. If I have only two, I will give one to my wife and the other for myself. I know it sounds selfish and all; but, my family members know that I have been preparing for an emergency and they did nothing to help themselves or me. So why should they be helped now by me? The ant and the grasshopper fable. :-(

When someone says that to me, I’ve resorted to asking them to give me something right then…money, food, whatever, and when they refuse I say “Then why would you take from me when it’s all I would have?”

  • @gypsywilderlinghomestead3051

Danny I hate to say this because it just let's me know the reality of the situation. Some of the comments I see people leave reminds me of the people laughing at Noah when he was building the ark. I just hate the thought of when all this really hits.

Yes. My garden is a big let down this year. Only thing I have canned is strawberry jam and the strawberries came from the farmers market. No matter what I did to the garden it dried up or taste so bitter. No beans, no peas, no yellow squash, and no scalloped squash. I have some tomatoes growing but they are tiny. The sweet corn is only a foot tall due to drought. I'm going to have t go to the farmers market to see if I can buy things to can.

Hi Danny! So true about the hybrids. I planted fifteen types of tomatoes, mostly heirlooms. Other than cherry tomatoes, the only full size tomatoes that are producing are the Solar Fire. We've suffered through high temps and mega amounts of rain. Vine plants failed horribly this year, squash and sweet potatoes. White potatoes failed. Corn failed. Marigolds even suffered this year. Had enough green beans and Yukon golds for one meal. Using my canning jars to can meat when I find it at a good price. We so appreciate everything thing that you are doing for us all!

Broccoli took a long time to grow then the heat effected it. I bought a hybrid broccoli to go for a fall garden and maybe we'll get enough. Greens always do well. Zucchini and cucumbers went to bugs. I replanted zucchini in buckets on porch to watch closely and maybe put under cover. Two ripe tomatoes. We'll try covering them too.

Are things dying in the forested areas? If not, then mimic that situation. Nobody tills the forest,;the leaves and limbs fall and rot creating a think organic layer. I know you've tried the wood chips but was it deep enough? I don't have the answer for your situation but it sounds like you may have to modify the way you go about it. The peppers I planted from seed are doing Way better in shade than in partial sun. None of them are in full sun as the package suggest. Think and do things outside the box. Good luck Brother.

Just Plain Common Sense, if you hadn't notice lately, the forests are on fire. It will take 30 to 70 years before the forest will back to where it once was. I went to Yosemite National Park in California back in 2015. An area that I had to travel through had a fire back in the late 70's. Would you believe it, you can still smell the chard coals of the trees that had burned? You can see a field sparely fill with young trees. While across the road where the firefighters stood their ground to save the forest, you can not see ten feet in front of you due to the mass amount of trees?
Here in California, when a fire hits an area the fire changes the soil. It makes it slippery because of the silica in the soil has turned to a glass like material. This doesn't allow rain water to penetrate the soil. It just runs off as if it was on a slip and slide. This causes mud slides and flooding. Most parts of the country has 4 seasons. California has only 3; sun, fire, and rain. Good luck with your planting.

      @reneebrown5598 Před 5 lety

@@jumpoffa5011 that's the truth. Except lately California only has 2 seasons. Hot and dry or cool and dry. It's only one fire season. 365 days a year. And no real rain or deep snow

Danny, we are in N. MS. After growing all kinds of fruit for many years, we have a shortage now. Most of our fig trees died this past winter. The figs that are on trees are not ripe yet. There are no persimmons on the trees at all. We harvested a few handfuls of blackberries and blueberries. We usually put gallons of blueberries and blackberries in the freezer. Our vegetable crops did pretty good though.

Crazy isn't it. I have the most beautiful looking garden ever in over 40 years ... only... looks though, no ripening fruit at all! ! ! I see the parallel between Joseph of Egypt in my little piece of heaven. For 2 years in a row I had a surplus that we still eat from. This year it is nearly Aug 1 and I harvested 2 tomatoes so far. 2 tomatoes and a ton of herbs. I am so grateful for my personal stewardship of being wise, productive, and as prepared as I can, but I worry for family and friends who have not maintained the vision. There is a sea of people where I live in CT that have shut an eye to what is so obvious. We know what that leads to by historical evidence even today. Once again a wonderful video with food for thought!

Yep I live in Lexington SC. It as rained every single day for 9 days straight. I noticed that parts of our land is saturated. Now I appreciate God's rain but it can reek havoc is there is too much of anything. The bugs and mosquitoes are eating us up. We even had to have the land sprayed, which I did not agree with, but they were biting us up so bad that we had no choice. On another note, I buy freeze dried foods and stock up on medical stuff from dollar tree as my budget is just so bad.

My Clemson Spineless that I have been growing for years really struggled to get started this year. They still aren't producing the harvest that I usually get every year. When researching information that the "gatekeepers" such as Google doesn't want you to see, I would suggest to use another search engine. DuckDuckGo is an excellent search engine I use that doesn't censor news or keep information hidden. As always, another great Porch Time!

Danny, my garden this year has never been this bad. Tomatoes were half as many with many with end rot. No zucchini and I usually have an abundance. Green beans faired well. No cucumbers, watermelon and my okra is stunted, just won't grow. We've had NO rain since March and extreme temps.

Yesterday morning we thought we were gonna get our first real rain since May but nope....it rained for maybe 3 minutes with wind blowing it straight sideways, then it just stopped. Ground is still hard, dry and cracked (Blackland Prarie clay soils of north Texas). The only thing that is doing well in the garden at this point is the okra and even it isn't making as abundantly as it did last year. Looks like we are gonna be hunting for farmers markets for food to can this year.

I wanted to add in that even the produce in the stores is going bad before we have a chance to eat it...nothing lasts longer than 4 days before it molds...so if we depend on fruit/veg from stores it is wasting money unless you eat it in 2 days or so. I feel like we all better be storing long term foods & if we can can this next season...we will be blessing God for it...if there is produce to buy in the stores...we will be thanking God for it and eat it that day. Thank you for your warning Danny...why did it seem like the dogs in the background were for the bottom line..."the wolves are at the door". I'm praying that God helps you out with that nuisance soon. I felt like Noah was talking to us today...;) God bless you!

This year was my first opportunity to try my hand at gardening and I thought it was my inexperience that caused my many many failures....Beans, Tomatoes, Corn, Carrots, etc. With today's porch time, and many other channels, I am just wondering if what I'm trying to do is a little to late to even try. But I know God has the final Word and I will continue to put my hope and trust in Him for each and every day thought out the future...WHAT-EVER comes my way...good or bad. Thanks Deep South Homestead for the "Straight Talk". I send my prayers for all to rely on God's wisdom and discernment for strength and encouragement...."Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” "Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV).

Something I think I'll do again, in light of your talk is to put up dehydrated soup. I fit 9 lbs. of frozen veggies in my Excalibur
dehydrator. I get the mixed soup frozen veggies when on sale 10 for $10. Probably GMOs but it's emergency food. I do have a good powdered bullion with no msg to use with it. Then pack it in mylar. Very economical. The bullion alone could keep you alive.

Danny, thank you for keeping us in line, we have been canning, storing food in mylar bags, with spices for long storage. Our garage is full of canned foods, water, we have variety of rice, beans, prepared for the delima. We have been laughed at, said we were crazy. You have been a witness to us. God told my wife five years ago to do this. We have food stacked under furniture, covered to not be seen, under beds, in closets. We have no kitchen table, we have very little furniture because it is all food prep. The LORD our GOD has put on my wife to save every seed we can get our hands on for future use. Danny, we are feeling like NOAH when people laughed at him. It has been raining a lot, with the hot sun, and humidity, the rain has been smothering a lot of plants with sand. We have to go out and wash sand off of plants to keep them from dieing. You are confirming GODS word to us, we are on track. We went to a couple stores with empty shelves and one was a major food store. Canning jars are scarce, we went to two different counties looking for them. They are hard to get today. May GOD BLESS your home.

I can relate . I wonder why some think just because we are in modern times that God doesn't give visions , messages as in biblical times ? He didn't stop , people aren't paying attention and are too busy with living the fast life . We are a retired couple and doing what we can . fixed income and disabled but the Lord is with us . You keep on doing what you are doing . The Lord is watching over you . You are doing it right , hand in hand with our Lord . Blessings, Linda

In North Mississippi. I always grow Clemson Spineless okra but, mine is an heirloom variety. Mine is producing like normal this year. Have to say, my beefsteak tomatoes are still producing nice big fruits and the vines are over 10 feet tall but, by this time last year I had gotten over 300 pounds of them and not even close this year. Bear in mind, my beefsteaks are from seed saved for over 8 years and are used to the conditions here on my land. My kitchen garden where they are planted is in year 3 of doing the Ruth Stout method and I believe that is the only thing that has helped. The tomatoes I planted out in the big garden where I just started doing the Ruth Stout method this year, have gotten blight. Everything seems to be growing much slower this year and we have not had rain in over a month. The grass is crunchy and the ground out in the big garden is so hard that I cannot even get it ready to plant my Fall crops. Three things I grow because my Grandma did are the Clemson Spineless okra, Kentucky Wonder beans and Yellow Jarvis corn. Her wisdom is priceless because those three things did well for me this year. I am glad I got to learn from her, a widow with three small children who got them all through the Great Depression.
