    The fact that two athletes with two vastly different approaches to planning and race strategy can finish a 240 mile race within minutes of each other is somewhat freeing to me.

    Making this comment when you said Jesse’s age. That is so wonderful to hear. Seeing someone at 50 in supreme physical condition takes a weight off of my shoulders. I was worried that as I age I may not be able to reach my goals. Seeing what Jesse has done confirms that I have nothing to worry about.

    • @carry_boats
      @carry_boats Před 4 měsíci +8

      I am literally thinking the same thing at age 40, but I am feeling fit and strong and Jesse has definitely proven that you can be strong runner into your fifties for sure.

    Started watching this video right after I finished MOAB240 Premiere two days ago, then paused it and continued it yesterday, had to pause it again, and finally finished it today. Funnily, as I finished it, i realized that it had be close to 71 hours between me starting this video and finishing it. And this is how long you guys were on course, meanwhile, I had been to work twice, had two full nights of sleep, and ate 5 meals. This put the amount of time, energy, and effort that goes in races like this in perspective even more. Kudos to both of you.
    While I watched the MOAB240 film, I almost felt bad for @JeffPelletier not winning, but now when I have heard Jesse's story, I felt good that he won it. Drove to the race all by himself, who made all of his drop bags by himself, pacer for just 12.5% of the trail, no crew, and fighting against all the pains to win the race, watch & phone gave up on him.
    Kudos to the lady at the Aid station who made sure that Jesse wouldn't quit, otherwise, we wouldn't have got a chance to hear this great story.
    And one thing that many people almost take for granted is, Jeff is filming while running all these races which is an added task+added weight by itself. Keep up the great work :)

  • @aphiggs8657
    @aphiggs8657 Před 5 měsíci +60

    The difference in approach and mentality between you two is so amusing to me! Jesse scrambles his dropbags with 30 minutes to spare, where Jeff has multi-page spreadsheets. Jesse has no crew, Jeff has the freakin' Rossmonster. Jesse doesn't know how to use a watch and accidentally switches it into KM, Jeff has the best watch on the planet. Jesse literally cannot even remember what the brand of his shoes was..! and Jeff probably picked his pair based on stack height, outsole rubber compound, and details of lug pattern...
    AND YET they each crushed this race in their own particular style. Cool.

    This honest and unrehearsed conversation was invaluable. You both represent the best qualities of our sport. For me (age 60, running since 1979, longest race the Cowboy 200, once a 4:16 miler), the duel between weathered wisdom Loner v. younger well-geared crewed/paced Sponsored Athlete was truly priceless. McMurtry might have written this as an epic novel had he lived, a Lonesome Dove 240. PS Jeff: Racing at 60 is glorious. Paraphrasing Sir Winston Churchill, It isn’t the beginning of the end, or even the end of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning.

    You guys are incredibly inspirational. I'm 32 and have have never been into fitness until about a few months ago. I'm doing the TMB hike this August, so for training I've started running with 13k so far being my longest distance. I found your videos after having your UTMB come up on my feed and I have not had a channel grip me like this in many years. I have watched both the moab video and this one back to back as I'm completely enthralled by ultra running. I have heard of people running these sort of distances, but never really looked into it. As someone who struggled to do 13k without stopping I can't even wrap my head around doing what you do, on basically no sleep, with the incredible terrain and elevation. Boy did this inspire me however. Probably more than I have been in many many years. I don't see myself being able to do anything like this, but I really can't wait to start increasing my distances with my next goal being 20k.Being new to running and figuring out training plans can be hard, but watching something like this just wants me to go out and give it my absolute best,because I know that however tired I feel, it will never be anything close to what you guys do. Thank you so much for the insight into your world, can't wait to binge watch your other videos past and future.

      @STURDYvids Před 4 měsíci +1

      As a tip; don’t be afraid to walk, keep your pace low and don’t force it! Ultras are quite different to Marathons in that regard. It is about beating yourself and always moving forward, not about shaving a Minute off of your pb. You can do this!

    Congrats on a race well ran and the chance to run hard for the win. You really captured the event well.
    I was at oasis as a volunteer and rd 46 crewing a buddy that was around 8-10th then. It was cool to see you both roll thru with completely different mindsets and tactics. Jesse was in a rough spot and really out of it mentally without much support. Funny to hear his recollection of his time there. I was the guy whose girlfriend was a PT (wife is a massage therapist) and I helped massage his calf and KT tape him and tell him what he needed to hear to not be as worried about the pain he was getting. I spent some time talking with Audrey as well and you seemed to be in a good space and had a good head on your shoulders still when you came through quickly.
    Thanks for putting together this long format video and talk. I’ve been working behind the scenes at ouray100 for a few years now and learned a lot there but I learned so much from both of your accounts of the event and plan on taking that knowledge to the starting line of Moab this Oct. to see what I’m capable of.
    Thanks again!

    Great racing and great story, gentlemen. Inspirational. Jeff you may have a perforated septum in your nose. Go to an ENT doctor and have them check it out.

    Wait can you explain a little further the issue of the crew leaving the aid station early so Jesse didn’t have a ride? What does having a ride mean in this context? Thanks!

      Jesse was overthinking it in the moment, it didn’t really make sense 😂

      The crew left early so he wouldn’t try to get a ride, but he could have got a ride from anyone else so the whole thing was moot.

    Jeff, if you didn't have to spend physical (and mental) energy filming you would have won, IMO. Well done anyway! 💪💪💪
