I joined the United States Coast Guard in 1974. Basic in Alameda. Made rate (damage controlman). Scooped up dead bodies in San Francisco Bay. Did my 4 years. Got a job at General Motors in Detroit. Got laid-off. Got a job in a little county jail as a guard. Promoted to Deputy Sheriff. Worked 25 years for the Sheriff Department. Retired 5 years. I highly recommend retirement. You will too, my friend.

Everyone who goes through thinks of quitting at some point. It’s a question of whether you really want it or not. There are no other reasons for quitting. As a former RS instructor, I can tell you most people aren’t aware of what they can truly accomplish until pushed beyond their perceived limits.

Hey Julian! Thanks for sharing this. It takes a whole man to realize when they should change pace and adjust to what works for you, even if that means to tap out. Good for you to be able to be with your family when they need you. Being able to choose places of where you will be placed is one of the reasons why Im joining the Coast Guard. But mad props out to you to be where you are right now!

I like the way you put it. Doing things changes your life, your perspective and it changes what you want to do. I’ve been struggling with the fact that I changed my mind on what I want to do because I feel like I’ve failed especially in front of others. But in reality it’s just my ego, and if something isn’t working for me anymore than it’s time to find something else I enjoy. I’m currently about to go to MEPS in a few weeks and deciding between the Air Force and Coast Guard. Thanks for the video man👍

Great topic! Thank you for talking about your truth. The whole thing about losing confidence is something that happens to anyone no matter where you are in life. This means it can happen at any age. It’s the ones who are truthful that can get past it. The reason why the Coast Guard is good is they take care of their people like move you to a location if there is a family emergency. I had a member who was PCS’d to New Orleans due to his father having brain cancer. I am glad the Coast Guard was there for you. Good luck in the future!

CG is good about that. It also helps to have the support of your command and supervisor. In my 20+ years, my moment came when I did everything I could to help my TC2 make 1st class (I drilled him night and day while we were underway) and to get him stationed at a unit just miles from his parents (in New Orleans of all places). I was also his TC "C" school instructor and knew of his hardships even before I ended up being his supervisor. That was over 22+ years ago. He was a single parent and went on to retire from the CG. Doing my job as a RM/TC was something I was always good at, enjoyed and was very proud of. But making sure as a supervisor I took care of one of my guys was IMO the most rewarding moments in my career. Taking care of your jr people just as important as being good at your rate.

Thanks for showing that there’s multiple aspects you can go in life. I’m thinking about being an officer, but also whether I should major in business(like accounting/marketing) or mechanical/electrical engineering in college. I like Math and Physics a lot, so I’d feel I’d perform well in those fields.👍🏿 I’m interested in the military mainly since I don’t want to have a 9-5 job, and I want to travel and find new experiences. But I also want to get a higher education and dive more into STEM/Business field. It’s a tough choice, but I got a couple more years left. I like your videos btw, and take care during this time.

From age 4-18 we had 1-2 practices a day at 2 hours a practice. JUST FOR THEM. Add to that high school team, and summer league local pool team. plus the weight room.
figure 5-6 hours a day full-out swimming. So If you come, You better come ready.

This video actually helps me right now.
I am currently a teacher in Hillsborough County Public Schools (Tampa, FL)and have really learned a whole lot of things about being a teacher, but especially about myself.
In short, I'm at exactly that point where I'm here watching this video because I'm looking to join the CG, but undecided of being Reserve or Active Duty, stay being a teacher and change from middle school to another grade school (high/elementary), pursue teaching at college level, become a Sports Agent, turn to Parks and Recreation, Special Needs population or turn tail and run back home to Puerto Rico.
I can totally relate to what you're saying on this video since that is exactly what I'm "typically" pursuing: rescue swimmer, and it's totally making me think a little ahead now.

Everyone thinks boot swimming is a joke. It is deadly serious and the cause of many being reverted out. I think the most telling is the movie they show representing different body types and the differing mass of bone muscle and fat. In the cold light of that reality you are tested for drownproofing; abandon ship drills; and long distance swim. Some have high muscle/bone mass and low body fat and just sink more than others - its a cold hard fact. So dont sweat it - toss that brick and move on. For those prepping for boot - swim - and swim some more. One way to gain tremendous confidence in the water is taking a Scuba course at the Y. You will have to don the apparatus - ditch it on the bottom of the pool - and then dive down clear the breather and mask and redon your gear. If you can swing that- you will gain confidence in the water.

While in U.S. Naval Aircrewman Candidate School I learned that if I didn't follow through with rescue swimmer school I'd be a crew member on Lockheed P-3C Orion's antisubmaine warfare aircraft. As an Aviation Ordnanceman the only flying job was being an Inflight Ordnanceman on P-3C's (12 man crew) which are only shore based because of their size - so I DOR'd RSS within the first 5 minutes (and I was the class leader too, ooops!) The only duty stations for P-3C's at the time were Hawaii, California, Florida or Maine. Being class honorman at the 36 week P-3 training school (VP-30) I got first choice of where I wanted to be stationed. I chose Maine so that I could continue to snowboard.
Had I not quit RSS I would have ended up on a ship part of a helo crew which sounded crappy compared to living in your own house that the Navy pays for and just driving to & from work like a normal job and NEVER having to step foot on a ship. It was great and thank god one of my aircrew instructors was an AO and he's the one that explained the difference between being an AO on P-3C's and being a rescue swimmer AO on a ship. Cheers!

Make sure you can swim, lift weights (I recommend working shoulders and back since they have you hold stuff up above your head or out in front of you for long periods of time), run (it isn't as important since there isn't much running, but be able to pass the runs easily).

Kieran The Zombie, I turned 22 during basic, there was several people older than me, one was 29. I noticed that they pick out the younger guys (18-20) and for the most part left a lot of the older ones alone. Move fast, be loud, and do only what you are told and you will be fine. It’s the young ones that can’t grasp the concept that it’s all a game to break you down and they begin to crumble under pressure therefore standing out to the CCs. Be a wallflower and don’t stand out if you are worried. It’s not that bad once you get into the mindset and keep your eye on the prize.

Well, all I can say is, you have to find the right fit. People build this persona in their head about being a certain rate being all hung up on the glamor. Sure, there's the act of saving people but dude, you are part of much larger team then just being a swimmer. I wanted to be a HM (corpsman). I worked at a hospital (xray) before I joined. I bailed from HM school 5 weeks in. Wasn't doing good in the academics so, I rung the bell. Had 2 choices. Go back to my old unit (small boat station), or go to a brand new 140ft ice breaker. I chose the ship. Put my papers in to go to RM "A" school or AM "A" school. less then 30 days of submitting my papers, I was off to my calling. RM school (they were short RM's at the time). Rather you save a life jumping out of helo's or making the right decision and sending the bet asset to affect the rescue and be the voice backup for the asset you just sent out in harms way. There is NO SHAME whatsoever to have a change of heart. Sure, I wanted to be a HM, then a xray tech. But, it wasn't for me. So, working on fixed wing aircraft or being a Morse code hound, I found my calling, my sweet spot. I felt i was hot poo being able to copy dits and dahs like there was no tomorrow and people who couldn't' thought I was "cool" for being able to do it. It was enough to keep me in 20+ years. And at the end of the day, I hold as much respect for the guy or gal who makes me the perfect omelet every morning for months on end while the ship is rocking and rolling, then the guy who jumps out of a perfectly good helo and gets all the glamor. Not to dig on AST's but it's just one of many important cogs in the wheel bud. I felt the same way I turned down making CPO so I could retire and spend more time on land with my family. You made a difference. Rather you think you did or not. FWIW, we didn't have AST's back in my day. We has Aviation Survivalman (ASM's) but when it came to rescues, even as a SA/SN at a small boat station in the great lakes, I had to learn how to SWIM, even in thin ice, to go and pull someone in. I've been retired for over 22 years and I don't regret one damn thing. You just remember, you either directly save someone or indirectly save someone, never forget that. 73's.

I was in navy rescue swimmer school, I’m telling u it’s not just mental you shouldn’t even have the thought of going through any special operations unless u are 110% committed. You have to go in the mindset of no matter what happens I’m not quitting. And if u have that then the only thing that’s gonna stop u is not being in good enough shape or injuries, and injuries have a lot to do with your body just not used to the training. I got injured twice and then performance dropped a week before graduation for not making the time on an eval. You have to be prepared, killing pt scores running and swimming multiple miles a day a ton of calisthenics and lifting heavy building strength in your legs. If u are having trouble with your pst u are not ready. That’s the easiest thing u will do all part of training and I can’t tell u how many guys came in not prepared at all.

Watching his videos makes me glad my son already joined, because his PR is going to make more people want to join and make it harder to get in. His videos are amazing because they are about so much more than joining the Coast Guard. They are about navigating your life.

why was coast guard boot camp mentally hard?

    • @MarkW126
      @MarkW126 Před 3 lety +1

Every boot camp is physically demanding (some more than others). But the USCG adds academics. I went though basic in the early 80’s, and I think it’s a bit different now, but I don’t think it’s a huge difference today. Week 5 was “hell week” (the USCG version of the Marine Corps “Crucible”). Hell week we slept maybe two hours out of 24, and it went on for 7 days. The PT was brutal that week as well, and we got smoked every day with M1 Garands, not a modern 7 pound rifle. And during all this, we had to maintain our academic standards. At least that’s my take. Your mileage may vary.

Word. What I saw in Rescue Swimmer School was they wanted to know if you were going to quit. You had to be physical tough, but anyone can train up to that point. What they really wanted was mental toughness. We couldn't have people who were going to give up out in the middle of the ocean.
