How'd you make out? Did you DOR? I DOR'd in the first 5 minutes because when I was in aircrewman candidate school one of my instructors was an AO. Once he found out that I was going to AO "A" School he kept telling how great my job would be as the inflight ordnanceman on the P-3C Orion. That the P-3C's are only shore based and your options for a duty station were only 4 places; Hawaii, California, Florida or Maine. That the Navy will pay for you to live in a house/apartment, you'll never step foot on a ship etc. etc. (that was the only flying billet for an AO at the time). But then he'd go on to say "Oh wait, but after aircrew school you're going to rescue swimmer school? Yeah, then forget everything cool I said about the P-3C's. You'll be part of a helicopter crew stuck on a ship somewhere covered in grease and living amongst 5000 other people."
So by the time we reported to the rescue swimmer school I DOR'd. I didn't want any part of being on a ship. So after aircrew school I went to Tennesee for A school and then to NAS JAX for 36 weeks of training for the role of the inflight ordnanceman (IFO). I was class honorman so I got my choice of duty stations (Maine). I did three 6 mo deployments (Sicily, Puerto Rico, Sicily) & got credit for sea duty the entire time in the squadron. One of my bosses retired as a Master Chief / IFO with 30 years of service and never stepped foot on a ship. I'm so lucky I had an AO as one of my aircrew instructors to tell me about how good life is in a P-3C squadron vs being on a ship.

I tried to go AST, but they wouldn't let me in because of my mild color vision deficiency. Miraculously, the Air Force offers Waivers to Pararescue Jumper Candidates with less-than-perfect color vision. I don't understand why this is, as PJs are essentially Rescue Swimmers with more advanced EMT and small team tactics training with an average training pipeline of about 2 years, as opposed to the 6-month AST A school. Regardless I just wanted to let anyone know who may face similar obstacles as me. It's looking like I'll be leaving for AF boot camp in late August.
    Edit:
Things didn’t quite go my way over these past few months after I realized my recruiter screwed me over and I had to make a last minute career-change in basic training. Still pushing to get the best job I possibly can for the lifestyle I envision for myself but the road towards my goals just ended up being a lot longer than I thought it was gonna be. I took a risk and it ended in failure but I still don’t regret my decision and I still intend on taking another attempt in 2ish years when they let me.

While both the Coast Guard and Navy have a rate for rescue swimmers, the Coast Guard takes pride in having the unique ability for their Aviation Survival Technicians, also known as rescue swimmers, to save lives on a daily basis. ASTs serve with Coast Guard air stations, deploying with search and rescue operations to recover civilians from dangerous situations. literally googled that

I am trying to get into the CG as an ME to go MSRT. the Police world is so corrupt and awful with how they hire and who they hire. If you're a white dude, good luck. You will get passed up on promotion and being hired at a bigger better department to a female or non white.
