  • This is the final phase of the Coast Guard's rescue swimmer training--the students dread these tests and it can all come down to this day whether they make it or not.

    Did it for 12 years in the Nav. Was one of two Combat SAR crews in my squadron. Got to do some fun flying out in Fallon NV. Never a dull moment, except the ASW classes at FASO.

    Some of you thinking that one is better than the other Coast Guard or Navy had best check your history. In 92 when i was in rss things were a tad different. At that time the Navy and CG trained together and went to the same school and class. 2 of my instructors where CG. The difference in the 2 jobs have to do with your rate and type squadron. I was an AT. The only job i could do as an AT was a door gunner for spec war support squadron. We flew hh60h models and worked with special warfare units. Then you got AWs who also fly in 60s but they do sub warefare. Then you have CG who also fly 60s but they are more focused on rescue swimmer job itself. They all went to the exact same school.

    MUCH respect to our Coast Guard SAR guys...These men and women do an amazing job putting their hides on the line "So others may live". However, they have the additional duty of horsing around with aviation equipment and working in a shop...Not really my cup o' tea...In the Navy as an AW you are more focused on being an Aircrewman and trained for other missions besides SAR. Just a matter of personal preference for those considering a career flying in the military...

    Thumbs-Up #664 Thursday night 24 September 2020 and after watching this, and several others before this, had to subscribe/energize the bell. I think local news channels occasionally should have a block for U.S. Coast Guard news.

    • @Inspadave

      They new sewing machines to maintain the life saving equipment. Rescue swimmer is not their primary duty. It is a collateral duty.

  • @prrnrngr
    @prrnrngr Před 12 lety

    @Mr17WWE call your local recruiter. When I joined I found the best way was to call the Recruiting office closest to you and if they didn't answer (which is pretty common in the USCG) you can then go on gocoastguard website and submit your info (this method worked for me) I got a hold of one of the recruiters and she said submit your info on the site and someone will call you back (took about 2 weeks for them to contact me). Good luck.

    Obsticle course. From best of my understanding the school is in a new building across the street perhaps where that old hangar where the gym was beside mcdonalds or that old factory. Anyhow get a good a school then volunteer for rss with the career counselor once there. If you fail or get dropped from rss at least you get a good a school. Otherwise you will end up doing something you wont like. I was scheduled to go to a p3 squadron but i vol like i said then ended up in hcs 4 60 squadron in VA.

    Do you have to have perfect eye sight to be a rescue swimmer?

    • @madisonhawkins8094
      @madisonhawkins8094 Před 9 lety

      It depends. There are certain qualifications for eyesight. My uncle is an officer in the USCG, he enlisted even though he had a degree to be a rescue swimmer. The ONLY reason he wasn't one was because he was DQ'ed because of his eyesight.

    • @Jabba.Da.Hutt_
      @Jabba.Da.Hutt_ Před 3 lety

      I know this is a 6 year old comment but the military does eye surgery for many things now. So it’s definitely possible to be a rescue swimmer even if you have bad eyesight. They will fix it to 20/20 or better. I’m still on the fence about going to ASTA school in the CG or becoming a aviator. Hope this video helps>> czcams.com/video/5YAtAZ1KiJY/video.html

    Rescue Swimmer should be a rate in the Navy along with Plane Captain. I did both and you can be stuck as a Plane Captain for years even after your rated it depends on your squadron. It’s a way for the Navy to save money and screw recruits that weren’t told about guaranteed schools by a crooked recruiter. I graduated Aircrew, RSS and failed ASW school by one question and was sent to the fleet non rated. I wasn’t guaranteed an A school by my shitbag recruiter so ASW was the only way I could become a Rescue Swimmer. My ASVAB scores were high enough to be put in an easier school so I could remain a Rescue Swimmer. I asked and was told NEEDS OFTHE NAVY SON. I graduated RSS and that can never be taken from me it’s on my DD-214 for eternity.......

    there is no reason for anyone in the Coast Guard to go to SERE...there is no reason for them to "resist or escape"...another sad thing about the Coast Guard...I went to the movie theater the other day and I showed them my CAC Card and got a Military Discount...a Coast Guardsman showed his and they didn't give him one because the Coast Guard is a part of Homeland Security...not the Department of Defense.

    • @Inspadave
      @Inspadave Před rokem

      That is unfortunate, but there is a reason for the USCG being a part of DHS in stead of DOD. They could not perform their mission as a law enforcement agency being under DOD.
