  • We painstakingly dubbed this NBC TV broadcast with the iconic radio call of Pittsburgh legends Jack Fleming and Myron Cope. Enjoy! If you go to our site, we've also done this for Super Bowl X (Steelers vs Cowboys) and it is FANTASTIC. Sadly, CZcams immediately banned it worldwide. Here's the link to watch SB X: www.mcmillenandwife.com/Super_...
The Steel Curtain absolutely CRUSHES Minnesota, finally winning a championship for "The Chief" while limiting Fran Tarkenton's supposedly high-powered offense to a paltry 119 total yards -- 17 rushing yards on 22 carries (an embarrassing average of 0.8 yds per carry) and 102 yards passing with 3 INTs -- a Super Bowl record which still stands today.
MVP Franco Harris (34 carries, 158 yards, 1 TD) is virtually unstoppable, Bradshaw is smart and efficient and the Pittsburgh offensive line simply manhandles Minnesota's famous Purple People Eaters. Defensively, the Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain is nothing short of phenomenal, especially the front four in what is easily the most dominating performance by a defensive line in Super Bowl history. Mean Joe Greene is overwhelming, Fats Holmes is immovable and L.C. Greenwood is in Tarkenton's face all afternoon, smacking down 3 passes and forcing numerous poor throws.
But perhaps most noteworthy is the performance of Dwight White, which is nothing short of heroic. White -- who spent the week in the hospital with pneumonia and lost 18 pounds -- totally dominates, scoring the game's first points on a safety and batting multiple passes, one of which is intercepted by Joe Greene.
Minnesota's offense crosses into Pittsburgh territory 4 times, The first, the result of a Bleier fumble, ends in a missed FG. Their 2nd trip ends in a Mel Blount INT after Glen Edwards nearly decapitates WR John Gilliam, popping the ball 20 feet into the air and right into Blount's waiting arms. The 3rd ends when Joe Green intercepts a Tarkenton pass batted by Dwight White near midfield. And the 4th and most promising (following a 42-yd pass interference penalty that puts the ball at the Pittsburgh 5) ends when Mean Joe recovers a Chuck Foreman fumble (forced by Ernie Holmes).
Had the Vikings not scored a TD on a blocked punt, this one would've been a shut out. Includes the halftime, commercials and 30 minutes of postgame material including the trophy presentation, fan interviews and round table player interviews with Bradshaw, Franco, Rocky and several members of the defense.

Also, I wish that the people that did the commentary for the EPSN NFL 2K series could do the commentary for past Super Bowl games, as that is a good video game, as well as one of the first video games that really captured how it truly felt to not only play, but also see, a football game, and people are STILL uncovering things in the code of that game to this day.

I grew up about 50 miles from Pittsburgh and remember them when they were the lovable loosers. It was so great to see Chuck Noll turn the team around. Back in the day the rest of the afc central had quality teams as well and lots of the losses were to other teams in the division for all the teams. I really believe that games between the afc central teams in that era were pitting better teams against each other than the teams that were in the superbowl.

This 1974 season was Mean Joe Greenes second and last nfl defensive player of year award winning season ,and unfortunately his final top 5 nfl player hierarchy. The debilitating pinched neck nerve injury he suffered in 75 was the reason behind his descension from top 10 elite stratosphere, that also rendered him with minimal usage of his left arm the remainder of his career . He went from a transcended great player into a very good , still arguably best vs the run afterwards, but minimized as a pass rusher after 74 . He routinely picked his spots in big games to channel his original great presence at pass rushing . As dominant as he was as a literal steel curtain defending the run , leadership, intimidating, occupying multiple blockers , he wasnt the incredible complete run ,pas rush combo of his prior first 6 terrifying years . This Steelers sb victory ,anchored by the steel curtain defense led by mean Joe Greene who corralled a int and key goal line fum ,and tormented the vikings blocking schemes intended to neutralize him ,which freed up his front seven mates to only encounter man on man blocking , remember both Jsck Lambert and Andy Russell left the game snd never returned after suffering ,and Dwight White had a severe case of flue that caused him to lose 20 lbs and be hospitalized a week prior to the contest znd return to the hospital afterwards, yet Mean Joe Greenes typical dominant presence kept that defense up right . Poetic justice that Mean Joe Greenes last great season final contest was the Steelers historically dominant performance in a sb 9 victory .Its not coincidental once age and nfl battle attrition finally after 12 seasons overcame mean Joe Greene that the defense finally lost its dominant steel curtain presence.

I would have been in diapers. Lol 🤣. Thank you for posting this 💖🙏👍 amazing!!!! I saw my first game at 3 Rivers stadium in 1978 against Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell's Houston Oilers on a Monday night game. We did lose, but started my lifelong love affair with OUR PITTSBURGH STEELERS!!!! Highlight of my life was seeing our 6th Lombardi trophy Won in SB 43 in Tampa FL Raymond James stadium with my late father who passed away last year from cancer!!!!! We held hands in the 3rd level, where the pirate ship was when Ben hit Santonio Holmes into triple coverage for the game winning touchdown pass!!!! I 🤔 thought that place was gonna collapse with the applause and partying!!!! I don't think I slept for 2 days of celebration!!!!! A plus was the Bridgestone halftime show with Mr Bruce Springsteen, which my father LOVED 😍👍!!!! I have no regrets, but I guess I just miss my Steelers buddy!!!! He passed away Aug 17,2021 and I haven't been back to a Steelers game since. But, there's always the memories and I'll take them to my Deathbed!!!!!! STEELERS fan FOREVER!!!!!!! 4 Superbowls in 6 YEARS AND No CHEATING!!!!! We should have won 5 in 6 years!!! Statistically their 76 Steelers team were the best EVER!!! Look up the stats!!! Spoiler alert, they had 6 shutouts!!!!! Would have loved to see Pansy boy Tom Shady play against Lambert and Joe Greene and Company!!!!? They would have carried him away off the field on a gurney or a wheelchair!!!!!!!

Was this fabulous or what? This was the first time I ever heard this Pittsburgh radio team. My oh my! I've not heard all the great broadcasting duo's over the years, but I'd made the case that these 2 guys were in a league of their own. They had me practically hopping out of my seat in excitement. After that "no call" on Tarkenton when he tossed the ball away, I thought Fleming was going to take leave of his duties in the booth and go down to the sidelines and confront the referee himself. What a display of love and loyalty towards one team. Pittsburgh deserved all their titles over those years; especially with such a supporting cast in the booth. True immortals of the game of football, they will surely remain.

The kind of power running game that the Steelers had will never exist in pro football now. The game is arena football on a larger field now. Every play is a pass it seems. The 93 Cowboys was the best power running team I ever saw, and the Steelers, the early seventies Dolphins, and the sixties Packers proved their worth with the power run.

I don't think that people fully grasp how dominant the Steelers defense was on this particular day. The Vikings only score came off a special teams play. Otherwise it could have been the only shut out in Super Bowl history

The Cryboys probably had Super Bowl X banned for you. But seriously, THANK-YOU for posting this. Bill Hillgrove is good, but NO ONE was better than Jack Fleming, especially in his prime. Interesting that he mentioned spotter J. D. Fogarty - he was still doing spotting until just a few years ago. His son is still doing spotting work for the Steeler radio team. And Myron was always Myron. Goodness, I miss him. And how about those stone age graphics on the screen? (I have to say, I like the simplicity of them.) I may watch this clear through next week instead of the Chiefs / Eagles!

This was supposed to be played at the Louisiana Superdome but it was not completed, so the game was moved to Tulane Stadium. It was the last NFL game played there.
I wonder what the difference would have been had they were able to play indoors.
The NFL no longer grants a city a Super Bowl unless the stadium is finished.

Watching back then, the only teams that had any sucess at all against the Steeler defense was the teams that cut block the front four and had a lead blocker to take on the first linebacker to arrive for the back. Trying to match up with them failed miserably.

  • @georgfriedrichhandel4390

Given the Steelers' success in the Super Bowl era, it is often overlooked that for their first 40 years in the NFL, they were the least successful team in the league. The team joined the league in 1933 (they were a semi-pro team before then) but never won a championship before the merger and they only made the playoffs once which they lost. All that changed when Chuck Knoll became head coach in 1969. Since the merger, the Steelers along with New England are the most successful teams in the league, each having won six Super Bowls.

  • @RandyTheWildHorse

If the field wasn't so slippery, I believe the Steelers would of have at least 28 points or better and the Vikings would have the 6. Just my opinion.
