FAKE WOOD Dresser Makeover!

- Transform a FAKE WOOD dresser to match your personal style (or, if you're like me, flip for a profit)!
Most big box store furniture pieces (Ikea, Ashley Furniture, etc) are not real wood. They're typically particleboard or MDF (medium-density-fiberboard) underneath a very thin surface. This doesn't mean you can't paint it to give it a makeover though!
This MDF dresser got a total makeover with paint and some fun trimmed out burlap details on the drawers. Freshened up the hardware and added drawer liners and it's a totally different piece!
What do you think? Would you try this? Let me know in the comments below! đ

Excellent tips. I've done a few makeovers, but the topcoat with the paint and, frankly, all the tips (Zinsser 1-2-3 primer, etc.) are fabulous. You explain your steps well, too. I'm excited to get to my new project. Thanks.
Aaah this is so sweet, thanks for your thoughtful comment! â€ïž So glad you got some good tips from the video, grateful to have you here đ
Really nice job! You must have been refinishing furniture for a while because your work is so professional and even though you donât have too many videos yet, you videos are so well done too.
Kayyy this is so sweet!! đ„Č Thanks so much, I appreciate this! I started flipping late 2021 and have just been aggressively teaching myself and learning ever since. I'm pretty new to CZcams video editing but I've been on Instagram for a little while so I think that helps. Thanks for the kind comment â€ïž

OMG girl you're literally exactly who I was hoping to reach with this video! I want folks to know you can totally transform pretty much any piece with paint to fit your style. Don't settle for the big box furniture look that ain't your style - so glad you found this video and hopefully it gives you some inspo for your dresser đ„°
This looks amazing! I have a cherry color dresser which is in great shape but I'm tired of the dark color. I think I'm gonna give this a try because I was planning on donating the furniture so if I screw up, I won't feel too horrible.
Yesss great strategy! Always nice when thereâs ânothing to loseâ haha, but Iâm sure itâll turn out great đ
Thanks so much to share with me this information! you are amazing
Aww of course Khatia, Iâm happy to be able to share!! Thanks for the kind comment đ„°

PAPER BAGS! GENIUS! Thank you! Love this transformation! Lauren Hull recommended you! B~}
Aaah I love Lauren so much, thanks for comin on over and commenting Brenda đ Yeeess you've gotta try the brown paper bags, it seriously makes such a difference! Just be sure to not get any parts of the bag with a logo on it lol. The ink can come off on your piece đ
@@buildingbridget You are very welcome! Thanks for the expert tip! Iâm looking forward to more videos! B~}
Gorgeous! Did you seal the fabric with the top coat? Watching from Greece. Thanks so much for sharing
Aaaah howdy from Texas! đ€ đ so I didnât seal the fabric personally. I feel like it would have gotten reallyâŠcrunchy and not nice to the touch đ
Would a oil based primer work just the same as the shellac primer? (To protect the mdf material)
Great question, and yes oil based primers also work great as a sub for shellac! I just personally avoid oil based products because of the fumes and how messy the cleanup can be đ
Thatâs really awesome. Trying to do mine. Could you please help provide What is the paint color and details?
Hi Rajani, thanks so much! Good luck on yours! So unfortunately this color is an "Oops Paint" - so a mistint from my local Home Depot, they're totally one of a kind and not a standard color. However I did do some testing and came up with "Cream Puff" by Behr as a super close color option!
Does some of the glue on the back of the burlap squeeze through to the front? Can you see the where the glue is once it's dried, ie. does it change the colour of the burlap?
Great question Suzanne! I had ZERO wood glue bleeding through the burlap but that's because I didn't do too thick of a layer and also spread it out evenly before adding the burlap on top. If you're worried about that though you can also get a fabric adhesive that comes in a spray can - it's clear and looks hella convenient! I've been meaning to try it đ
@@buildingbridget Thank you for the great reply xx
@@sunwin10 Of course! Hope it's helpful! đ
? The way you paint with the drawers inside does that cause any sticking of the drawers where they open to the furniture piece?
Common misconception, but no! Youâll never end up with drawers sticking when you paint with the drawers inside unless youâre spraying heeellla heavy. In which case youâd have runs and drip marks and lots of other problems anyways đ
Awesome work. What color paint is that and where do you buy that material on the top drawers.
You didn't mention the type or color the paint was unless I missed it
Good question! So this paint is actually a mistint from the Oops Paint section at Home Depot, so no name or formula for it. The type of paint is just Behrâs interior paint, itâs always an acrylic enamel!
Hi! I have a dresser I bought from Ikea and just found out its fake wood. Do you know if you can replace parts of dresser with real wood?
Hi there! Yeah you can def replace parts with solid wood/hardwood plywood! Are there broken parts or you just want to add some wood accents?
How much did you charge for your labor? Iâve learned so much from you in the last 2 hours đ
Ahaha Iâm so glad to hear that!! Tbh I donât do a ton of furniture anymore but typically Iâd charge $500-700 for a dresser?
Hi, like your designs and work. Are you still doing furniture flip to bew design or color? How to reach out to you and where are you located to find if my furniture can be done with you.
Hi there, just got your email and replied! Unfortunately I'm in Texas so I wouldn't be able to provide work out in Boston. Appreciate the support though!

What type of paint did you use?
This is actually an Oops Paint from Home Depot! đ So it's a mistint with no name or formula on the can. However it's Behr interior premium plus paint (which is an acrylic enamel paint) - and I've found a super similar color is Behr's Cream Puff!
