FAKE WOOD Dresser Makeover!

  • Transform a FAKE WOOD dresser to match your personal style (or, if you're like me, flip for a profit)!
    Most big box store furniture pieces (Ikea, Ashley Furniture, etc) are not real wood. They're typically particleboard or MDF (medium-density-fiberboard) underneath a very thin surface. This doesn't mean you can't paint it to give it a makeover though!
    This MDF dresser got a total makeover with paint and some fun trimmed out burlap details on the drawers. Freshened up the hardware and added drawer liners and it's a totally different piece!

    Would a oil based primer work just the same as the shellac primer? (To protect the mdf material)

    • @buildingbridget
      @buildingbridget  Pƙed rokem +1

      Great question, and yes oil based primers also work great as a sub for shellac! I just personally avoid oil based products because of the fumes and how messy the cleanup can be 😅

    That’s really awesome. Trying to do mine. Could you please help provide What is the paint color and details?

    • @buildingbridget
      @buildingbridget  Pƙed rokem

      Hi Rajani, thanks so much! Good luck on yours! So unfortunately this color is an "Oops Paint" - so a mistint from my local Home Depot, they're totally one of a kind and not a standard color. However I did do some testing and came up with "Cream Puff" by Behr as a super close color option!

  • @sunwin10
    @sunwin10 Pƙed rokem +1

    Does some of the glue on the back of the burlap squeeze through to the front? Can you see the where the glue is once it's dried, ie. does it change the colour of the burlap?

    • @buildingbridget
      @buildingbridget  Pƙed rokem +1

      Great question Suzanne! I had ZERO wood glue bleeding through the burlap but that's because I didn't do too thick of a layer and also spread it out evenly before adding the burlap on top. If you're worried about that though you can also get a fabric adhesive that comes in a spray can - it's clear and looks hella convenient! I've been meaning to try it 😊

    ? The way you paint with the drawers inside does that cause any sticking of the drawers where they open to the furniture piece?

    • @buildingbridget
      @buildingbridget  Pƙed rokem

      Common misconception, but no! You’ll never end up with drawers sticking when you paint with the drawers inside unless you’re spraying heeellla heavy. In which case you’d have runs and drip marks and lots of other problems anyways 😅

    You didn't mention the type or color the paint was unless I missed it

    • @buildingbridget
      @buildingbridget  Pƙed rokem

      Good question! So this paint is actually a mistint from the Oops Paint section at Home Depot, so no name or formula for it. The type of paint is just Behr’s interior paint, it’s always an acrylic enamel!
