Fresh sea urchin and fresh hot rice along the beach is honestly one of the best meals I ever had

Yes, sir.

Taku from "Outdoorcheflife" has been harvesting and making videos of purple urchin for a few years now. They're much more abundant than red urchins on the coast. You don't even need to go diving for them. And he's been trying to bring the subject of commercializing purple urchin to light.
Yes, Taku rules!
Your reply is literally spam. None of it applies to this channel or this video.
@@solchapeau6343 sure buddy, talking about a guy that's been advocating to commercialize purple urchin (which is not only what this whole video is about but also in the title) has nothing to do with this video. Sure buddy... Btw do you wear that sun hat on your ass too? Bc it seems to me that's where you're talking from.
Thank you! Such information is appreciated

Really long claw/teeth things: You prepared, unfortunately not enough.
The truth is that back in the fur trading days they hunted the native oregon coast otter to extinction. It was a keystone species that lived in harmony with the urchins, kelp, shrimp, etc. Once the otter was taken away, the urchins were left to run wild and unchecked. They have tried to introduce California otters but have had no success.
Why was the otter indroduction a failure? Are they no longer suited to that environment?
@@SA2004YG what do you think??
@Al Castill maybe keep the politicking out of this? Previous attempts have been made to translocate otters to Oregon that have been unsuccessful. It's been hypothesized that otters have territoriality and will not settle in new areas. Thus, attempts to settle otters in areas where they once inhabited have been difficult.
Or... it's because they hate California.
@Al Castill Sea otter hunting was banned over 100 years ago via international treaty. You made a snide joke about California and were trying to suggest the current government has something to do with it. I have no skin in the game besides a membership at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I just hate easy jokes about politics when the actual issue is heavily nuanced.
@@XiaoNio it was the first act of animal conservation in the united states if I'm not mistaken. There was only one family of sea otters left on the west coast. From those 5 otters in moss landing came the entire wild population we have today. Ehh, my fourth grade curriculum was a long time ago, feel free to correct me
We definitely need more people going after the purple urchins. I even just posted a video of 2 dive spots just 30 miles from each other that have stark differences because of them.

In Australia, down in Tasmania there are a few issues with urchin barrens decimating the kelp forests. The overfishing of rock lobster caused the population to explode and I think if urchins became a more mainstream seafood and there were more laws on lobster fishing we could help balance the coastal ecosystem of the kelp forests.
Fresh sea urchin and fresh hot rice along the beach is honestly one of the best meals I never had.
EXCELLENT video! I never realized that the Pacific Northwest had such a delicacy on our beaches awaiting harvest.
These are genuinely so tasty when fresh. Reminds me of when we used to go island hopping during summer
I live in Port Orford! I absolutely love sea urchin! 🥰
It's like a rambutan, a purple rambutan.
An angry, voracious, mobile rambutan.
I’m glad they’re finally making use of that species
Just make them cheaper at sushi restaurants and they’ll be gone fast. I’ll definitely help out lol
Yeah, we've made other species extinct before. If these are a problem, have a good marketing campaign and we'll eat them all up.
You literally get a huge bag and get like ten pounds of uni to sell
@@recoil53 Nah it's the reverse if they're farmable, it actually brings species back from the brink. Bison for instance got saved not because of government action or societal awareness but because people liked to eat them and businessmen saw it to be a good idea to make sure their business stays successful for as long as possible.
@@1810jeff There are all kinds of game fish that have been driven to extinction - tracking what is caught in the Florida coast is proof of that.
Cod and now snow crabs have steadily declining - and occasionally crashing - populations because of over fishing.
Tuna - same. Average size of tuna are far smaller than they used to be and they are under such population stress that they now go sexual maturation sooner.
@@recoil53 That's why I specified that they have to be farmable, if they're farmable then people will make sure that their numbers stay up so their business isn't in danger.
That plating right there is $12. A piece of bread with 2 or 3 urchins even though its an invasive species and we need to encourage more people to eat them but those kinds of prices is just ridiculous.
I recommend smoking the sea urchin and serving it with rice and wakami salad
you UNI live once! - Asian Food Nerd 🎖
I just ate dinner
And now I'm getting hungry
Looks good ngl
Never heard it was a custom to drink it when you open it. I'm still not convinced that's a thing. Someone might have lied to this guy as a joke and he's never caught on.
Evan Saltare never ever heard this either. Lol disgusting. I can’t believe he did that.
Hi I'm from Asia. And I can attest that we do eat it with lemon or kalamansi right after opening it.
@@troxy_venol8579 I'm not from Asia but we also squeeze that lemon and drank that goodness.
Yes, we drink the juice but you have to kinda clean it
They drink the Kina brine in New Zealand all the time.
I love sea urchin, I remember my first time having it, it was the freshest thing I’ve tasted straight out of the ocean / salt water. It has a subtle sweetness that leaned towards more savory. It was great without soysauce when eating it as a giri (over a small ball of rice). It’s delicious regardless with soy sauce, or sesame oil or roasted seaweed / laver, and some fresh chopped hot chili peppers over some hot white rice. The rice can be seasoned with sushi seasoning, furikake or rice vinegar coating on rice (1:1:1 ratio, of sugar, vinegar & water in a saucepan, boil until it gives a slight coloration, and sugar is dissolve). Absolutely delicious.
Yum thank you!
The reason why the population of sea urchins exploded is due to the extinction of their natural predators: the California sea otters. Sea otters are voracious eaters that an individual can consume 200 urchins in one day. Otters kept the balance of the entire coastal ecosystem by keeping the sea urchin population in check, which allowed giant kelps to thrive, which in turn provided sanctuaries to other marine life.
Oregon coast otter... not California.
Fresh, thank you for sharing your experience and ideas, we will try to make it soon.
"He who first ate an oyster was a brave man." Same applies to Sea Urchins.
Sea urchin over population, such a thorny isse
Very great video
Excellent video, guys. Going to hit the coast next weekend for some delicious Oregon purple Kina! Thanks, mates
I tried sea urchin a couple of times before and never got into it tbh but still interesting to watch this
Interesting. I kind of want to try some
Maori would say it’s an offering from Tangaroa. Up up bro’s🤤😂
THANK YOU!!!! I love that you leave the sea water with it… because so may other people rinse it so much that it just a water taste and no more salt!!! UGH!
2:05 i see you Patrick star!🥰
This was really informative. Thank you!
let me know when you sell in SF bay area. I am a huge consumer of uni but there's consistent sellers here. Marukai/Mitsuwa/Nijiya occasionally has it. Also I prefer to buy large live sea urchin.
Just sea urchin , a lemon and a very dry white wine ...then this is heaven !
Good Ol' Port Orford !
Since there's an overpopulation, I wish they were cheaper! Sea urchin is still hard to find in restaurants and so expensive to eat even in Washington/Oregon.
I think you'll find that a lot of the cost comes from the actual processing of urchins. They can be extremely labor intensive
I've only had good sea urchin a few times. I wonder how these taste. Wouldn't mind making a trip to find out.
I clamed and oystered in Camp Pendleton boat basin for years. I do miss that part of my California life. Tried sea urchin. Not much to eat where I harvesting.
Wow. Absolutely Delicious looking. Excellent job Chef.
We gotta eat more of these, to save the kelp. Not enough otters anymore
I volunteer as tribute to eat urchin and fight the problem.
Out here in the Philippines I usually just go out and get those from the beach! I usually eat them with leftover rice out on the beach. Or when we go boating and dive down I eat them on the boat with vinegar! :D
unexpectedly an uptalker
awesome vid very informative
What about sea urchin ceviche at dorsia?
looks good that people are doing good to save ocean life.
Freddi Fish: “You’re doing WHAT to the purple sea urchins?!”
Who looked at these and thought "you know what, imma eat it" like tf.
Someone really hungry and desprate
Did somebody ever told you how Ignorant you are?
@@nhovyjann Yeah cool.
@@ezechiellabayane6194 I mean, I've never tasted it before, but it's just a weird thing to look at and decide to eat :)
TBF You could say that about most shellfish
Taking a shot of sea urchin made me gag a little lol
I never try purple sea urchin. Is the taste the same?🤔🤔
Similar, and quite delicious as long as it has a kelp source
In general wherever you go, a sea urchin’s taste will have a distinctive taste. It’ll have a fresh ocean salt water taste, as if you’re having butter made with sea salt. Except it’s the eggs that’s so creamy & savory.
Hmm. I want to hear more about these farm efforts to resuscitate sea urchins. That seems like a really interesting idea that makes use of the urchins natural instincts and biology to our benefit, and potentially makes harvesting otherwise unwanted urchins that would be left there to devastate the ecology worthwhile.
But clearly, seems like still early days..
I love uni, if only it wasn't so expensive
Dang I’ll just harvest them just to put in a fish tank
Seems so easy instead of fish
Purple sea urchins are a pest there is far to many, glad to see this
Leave the red ones, there’s not enough
How is the thinking process of the first human decided to try to eat it.
I just can't do Urchin. I have only had it in sushi, though. I would definitely give this a try. It's probably amazing fresh like that.
0:13 nah I’m not drinking that
Where around Newport and Seaside can I harvest these. I'm just getting into freediving, I would love to help.
Yum
The reason the over proliferation of urchin is because the Otter popular was decimated in the last century... bring back the otters, and it will decrease the urchin population and dramatically increase the size of the kelp forest... in term, providing a substantially healthier marine ecosystem for other fish species as well as better tasting urchins (similar to Santa Monica) in the future! Let’s reintroduce the otters!
So many when diving in BC coast as well.
Sea urchins are oddly beautiful.
I'm scratching my head to that whole set-up like table, cutting board, sheet pans and firing up Bichotan for that grill just for a toast with uni?
Hey How does a sea urchin search the internet?
*sea-urchingine.*
How do you comment on every single food video on the internet
@@nathantyrrell5447 probably not every single one?! I'm sure I'm missing a couple lol

"The goal is trying to get the market going for them", which is weird, because purple sea urchins in Japan are quite the delicacy and quite sought after.
I am sure all the pretentious Americans would know this.
@houchi69 Context, bro. Just before your market quote, he detailed that you don't need a commercial license or a wet suit to harvest them. He's clearly talking about getting the market going for local restaurateurs. And, uh, people know uni is super popular in Japan.
Sea tribbles
10,000% increase and creating massive urchin barrens, and here in socal the clowns at DFG keep the daily limit at 35 😅
I don't know about the drinking juice part......
you didnt need to flex that hard with the uni bruschetta
what is the real taste of Purple sea urchin?
Delicious
Does anyone know where in Oregon - there’s an abundance ?
With their small size and a limit of only 10 with a shellfish tag it's really not worth it. The state needs to upthe limit on the purples to like 50 then it'd be worth coming down and I could have a feast with my friends but 10 of those little sea urchins, that's not even a snack. And yes I've been in that exact place and several other places around Oregon they need to raise the limit to get people excited about it
eat them all. we need more fresh oxygen from kelp forests and the urchin is eating all the kelp
They used to be a delicacy. Now an annoyance! Eat them things!
But why why is king crab legs still so expensive? They are taking over other shorelines!
you absolutely do not do a shot of seawater "customarily"
If anyone watch to watch more of these, check out Outdoor Chef Life's channel!
wish i had close access. id get em so opten
Espuma
am i the only one who doesn't even know that purple sea urchin is existed?
Nope I thought they were always black lol
Yes. You are the only one.
I prefer a chicken biryani or some egg fried rice with sweet and sour chicken.
With kalamansi is for me the best
To much effor only for singgle bite no wonder why it's expensive
Interesting
Human be like "I'm gonna eat you and eat what you eat while showing it to you"
thats a $100 piece of toast
Isn't this the thing that makes cartoon characters jump up 100 ft when they step on it
"The issue out on the reef." Wonder what the issue is?
@Peter Vega A minute earlier he said commercial harvesting has caused barren reefs so there is no kelp growth which is not an issue in the cove "where there's plenty of seaweed..."
Should've interviewed Taku (OutdoorChefLife)
please make more mise en place video
Couldn't you just blend up some kelp and sea water and get the same effect? Lol
To help control them and get people interested in them they need to drop the license.
purple sus
makes me wanna try feeding them different things to see what happens
The more humans eat sea urchins the better, as of now there are too many decimating the kelp forests
definetly nothing for the eye
All that just for 1 bite size snack
Anong ginawa nyo sa tajom tag palaman
where in oregon is this at
Polynesians & Maori people will solve this problem! 😂
