  • What kind of jumps or spins will give you the automatic zero in the figure skating competitions? It might not be what you think (Definitely not a fall!!) In the most recent Budapest Cup, Maiia Khromykh was given an automatic zero in her final 3Lz, why is that? The answer, repeated jumps. Figure skaters have to perform the technical elements strictly according to the regulations to scores. So what were the top 6 automatic zero moments in figure skating? Let's find out in this video!

    I don't live in India but I also live in a country wherein there's barely even ice rinks let alone snow, so even though I wanted to try ice skating at some point when I was younger, I just gave up because of the lack of opportunity and just continued supporting other athletes in the sidelines. That's why even though she scored nearly 0 points, I'm still proud of her for at least trying since compared to me and many other people who just gave up without even trying, she still went out there and shot her shot.

      I'm from Russia and there are two skating rinks wich are walking distance from my place. Still felt proud and inspired by Parri Srohi. You just go and do what you can at the moment. Honestly being FS fan teaches me a lot.
      I think Ted also said Parri did not have a chance to skate for a year so JGP official practice was her first practice in a long time. So all that time she was literally image traning like Yuzuru did before Olympics.

      There’s a skating rink near our home which is only open in winter time, and in summer time it becomes a roller skating rink instead. Thus, I don’t see your problem why you didn’t try figure skating when you were young. You don’t have to compete to enjoy a sport, because not everyone is born to become a top sporter.

    Another rare example of automatic zero: Dmitri Aliev didn't do an axel jump at all at 2018 Lombardia trophy during his FS. He received a zero for his last combo because a double or triple axel is required in the FS. I remember he made a post about it on his insta (story i think) and laughed at his mistake. He still won the silver.

    i feel like as an indian fs fan, i have the right to comment on this topic.
    i won't say that fs is *almost* non-existent. figure skating is a fairly popular sport in the northern, northeastern states & huge metropolitan cities (it doesn't snow in these cities though) i.e. bombay, chennai, bangalore & calcutta (yes, we have nats for fs here) where it snows, but the problem is, we don't have any winter sport federations/proper facilities.
    we currently have only 3 athletes (aanchal thakur- ladies alpine skiing, shiva keshavan- men's singles luge & jagdish singh- men's cross country skiing) who represent us in the owg. out of these 3, only aanchal thakur has a medal (youth olympics)/(probably because she trains in switzerland with her *own* money) and the others don't even come in the top 15 (i really don't blame them though)
    these athletes go to the owg by crowdfunding. the government practically doesn't support it, so it's extremely hard to be a winter sports athlete here.
    yes, i was pretty disappointed with the scores, but i'm not going to blame her. she must've been nervous + no proper facilities. in fact, that was very brave of parri. on the russian media's part: that was extremely nasty. she's a child.
    there's still time for improvement. i hope she makes a grand comeback!
    /sorry for the rant lmao

      The person who wrote in that sports. ru twitter is shameless and that comment is disgusting to say the least. • @wip1664

      I think that was a junior competition? Maybe she won't make it to senior. I guess she likes the challenge of figure skating and of breaking in to the sport for a country such as India.
      India is consistently very warm and humid, unless she lives higher up near/in the mountains. I think figure skating is quite challenging to the heart and breathing. During a skate program, the skater cannot settle at an optimal heart rate or breathe rate. These rates fluctuate greatly. Very young people/skaters can fluctuate at a faster pace. As the skaters age, they cross train. They are no longer as internally active as when they were very young. Cross training would ensure better energy and a more pliable body. During a continuous skate program, the inappropriate heart or breathe rate can induce mistakes, such as popping a jump or falling... sometimes hard. I don't know where in India she lives, or if she even lives in India. Breathing in the cold air at the rink is already a disadvantage to the physical body that has to warmup quickly once in the program in order to do jumps and to offer pretty movements. It is an endurance sport although it may not appear that way.
      I don't believe those disrespectful comments came from the professional people of RU skate...as they know the difficulties in the sport, that is not a typical athletic sport.

    • @wip1664
      @wip1664 Před 2 lety +3

      @@nadiahDono I don't think it is an expensive sport. The only "expense" is having the right people to train/coach, as these people are extremely limited.
      If they have their promising athlete live overseas in a varying climate for at least part of the year, it should be a good start. A skate rink is not expensive, the training tools shouldn't be expensive.

      @user-oo5bk4xs7b Před 2 lety +12

      @@wip1664 The problem is not just the cost of training.. But the matter is that no matter how much money you spend, it will not return to you with financial means if you do not have a sponsor or someone responsible for you who will take care of all the expenses from a coach, the ring, the outfit, a choreographer, the gym, ballet classes, transportation and most importantly of that The time and effort anyway is above these sums if you are not good as if you put all that money and hard work in the toilet

    Great video!
    I have two remarks :
    Medvedeva did 3-3-3 at nationals, not Europeans . At Europeans she added and extra 3T to her last double axel.
    Which brings us to my second remark, the number of combinations : in the old system the 4th combo would count as full zero, for example at Skate America 2012 Adelina Sotnikova falls on her second 3f planned in combo with 2t 2lo, then adds it to her 3lo to make it a 3lo 2t 2lo. However she already did two combos earlier (3lz 3t and 2a 3t), and at the time the repeat rule counts as a combo so she scored zero for her 3lo 2t 2lo. The change of rule allowed Medvedeva to do the 4th combo with "only" a 70 % deduction on her 2a ( but the extra 3t didn't count as it is an 8th triple).

    • @FigureSkatingFan
      @FigureSkatingFan  Před 2 lety +5

      Oh you are right!!! OMG We got the memory mixed up for the Europeans and Russian Nationals! What a season for Evgenia though! Her constant attempt at challenging the rules actually became the highlight of those events! And yes for your second point. I remember at that time her win was so guaranteed that she couldn't care about the 70% Base value. And Eteri laughed and told her not to do it again.. And she broke another world record with that free skate in Worlds 2017 (My favorite world championship of all time because of her and Hanyu's skates! Also Sui and Han :)) There are actually many more rules in the judging guides and we just couldn't cover all in the video, such as not repeating the same jump 3 times, not accidentally repeat another triple or quadruple beyond 2 (Happened recently to Maiia), some stsq mistakes etc.. We might do a part 2 though :P

    And about the female short program, I actually agree with the limits of triples and quadruples, let’s not forget that they would push their limits too much too young and it’s good also too see who has the best technique on the same skills and put them all a bit more equal. I’d say 1 Quadruple only for senior category at Worlds and Olympics.

She had to have passed her Junior moves in the field test and her junior free-skate. Seeing as if she HAD passed those tests basic skating should have been no problem (while we all struggling with russian stroking once in a while) so im not quite sure how that happened. understandable that she lives in a country with little to no representation but thats just how i see it. i do feel a little bad that it was broadcasted live it mightve been embarassing for her but i dont know this is all just an observation

    Reminds me of the 2016 US Nationals and Mariah Bell's long program where she lost a lot of points because she forgot to keep track of how many jumps she was allowed: czcams.com/video/LFlhJPa_hk4/video.html I never forgot the look on her face when she realized it when getting off the ice! The growing pains of figure skating.... Even then with that mistake, she was one of my favourite skaters to watch and is one of my all time faves!

    I am really sorry and I want to apologize for russian media.
    I think it was awful: all this rude words about indian skater.
    I want to say, that russian media are very agressive for russian figure skaters too. For example, Mikhail Kolyada became target of harrasment after Olympics 2018, and some public persons from TV even now bully him! Insult the best russian male skater, yes, they do it((
    Another example: you know, that Anna Sherbakova got only silver medal in Budapesht (young Maia Khromyh became first). After Budapesht Trophy headlines exploded. How do you think, what russian media wrote? May be congratulations to Maia? Oh no. It is not interesting for them. They wrote "Anna Sherbakova lose her jumps", "Anna cannot fight for Olympics anymore", "Anna was so bad, that she could'n get ahead of girl without any title".
    So, not only Parry (indian skaters) is a victim of russian media. Most of skaters even don't read anything about themselves, they regarded as an inevitable evil.
    I want to say, that common people in russia don't support harrasment in media (not all of us, anyway)

    I won't cut the Indian any slack. It's competition, and she came unprepared. If she doesn't have opportunities, it's no grounds to go easier on her, because all the other competitors work through blood, sweat and tears for this chance as well. If her technique is that poor, how did she even qualify to compete there?
    I don't come with my 2 years worth of irregular horse riding to the A-list event and expect sympathy.

      Jeez, it's not like anyone is saying she should have scored higher, it was definitely fair. She went there, she didn't skate as well as the other, because she isn't as competitive and doesn't live in a place where fs is popular, she got the lowest score, she gained experience and represented her country. I don't see why people should be entitled to be rude to someone who only had the opportunity to compete at a prestigious competition of the sport she loves.

      Imagine feeling like you have the right to be rude to an actual CHILD. No one is saying she deserved higher marks or a medal. But to rag on a literal child who clearly doesn't have a lot of support and a strong federation to pay for her training speaks volume on your character. You don't need to pretend like you like her skating but you also don't need to say anything at all about a child that was given an opportunity to compete on the international level.

There are at least 10 Russian ladies who can win a medal on senior international competitions but only 3 are allowed on a single competition. But instead of watching gorgeous skate and real battle we need to spend our time on this. Don't you think it's strange and unfair.
