@@jadejaguar69 Not really, most people do compete for gold but getting on the podium is already a great achievement and a lot of people would be content with a silver or bronze.
That's still the BEST he competes with. Of course, being the best, period, is awesome, but being amongst the best is, too. Of course every olympic athlete is there pushing for gold, but getting on the podium is still pretty good.
@@jadejaguar69 why would anyone be unhappy. I would be happy with 4th or 5th. If I end up being 9th or 10th, I would think what I could have done to be near or on podium. If I end up being after 10th, either it was expected because I am competing with the best and they are better, or I was having an unexpected difficult time, or a not fully recovered injury.
Do your best. Try. Don't overdo...or you could have been 5th and near the podium, now you are 10th. But seasoned skaters do take risks in challenging themselves with a more difficult program, and don't mind screwing up with a place far from the podium. I think those who worries about screwing up is because the community/paparazzi speaks of them too highly, and they don't want to not meet the expectation. The newbies are expected to try their best to medal...that is the norm...some eventually will succeed.
The scoring, unlike in a sport such as track and field, is somewhat subjective. There is no finish line. There is no limit of height (vault) or measure of distance (long jump.) There is no song or aesthetics. Contrary, in figure skating the visual aspect has much impact on the outcome in scoring. The triple and quad jumps...how well executed still remains a bit cloudy for they happen so quickly. The better judges will see the jump as a spectrum in continuity. The pre-entry, entry, airborne motion, landing, post landing is taken into account. They can see further and beyond "the jump". I wonder why former Olympics skater are not included on the judging panel. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between a triple or quad unless the commentators indicate. The music or audio impact can also affect how well received is the total program. Perhaps there could be a peripheral factor in the scoring, such as aesthetics...as oppose to "artistry" or "presentation"... meaning the program, like a film, is well produced, well directed, competent in all its elements such as suitable music and choreography...and yes, the skater has an input to all this to generate a bigger output.
With a sport such as professional figure skating, every practice session is in itself a competition in the true sense. If you don't focus as you do in a competition, you fall, and no one likes falling especially on ice wearing skates doing a triple or quad jump and at the same time be mindful with timing on the music and staying "aesthetically pleasing" to look at.
I know! I mean a fail for me would sure land me last place. 😅 to be fair though, my only background even close to ice skating is roller skating and they aren’t anything alike.

@@jamesyu5212 yea like the illusion he did after his 3a but still very amazing. but he also has routines where he doesnt put his leg down even after a few seconds and the kick doesnt come immediately after the landing so theres still the intentional part of the choreography. either way, very challenging and amazing way to end a jump ^-^

The combinations from 0:32 to 1:09 don't look like something a human should be able to do. So many HARD jumps in a row, and he makes it look incredibly easy

@@michellerose7753 4T means quadruple toe loop, 4A means quadruple axel, although that’s a jump nobody’s ever landed in competition. In sum, it’s just notation to abbreviate the different jumps and the amount of rotations

Lovely man, God's gift to his mother and father! We only get to watch and support him from afar, BUT we are blessed to get to celebrate and laugh also! And he naturally teaches valuable things. He is an excellent role model, which is desperately needed and always in very short supply. So in that way, he is also God's gift to us, and to our children and grandchildren. Whoever said "nice guys finish last" didn't know Yuzuru! ❤Fly, Yuzu!❤
this made me feel a lot better after the recent interview talking about the 4a as his last dream. he has accomplished so much that he passed to the figure skating history as one of the best male skaters of all time and one, if not, the most charismatic and loved at that

I have absolutely no clue about figure skating, but even someone as ignorant as I can say he's a walking legend. Winning a competition while having an injury is no easy feat in any sport.

in my opinion, he is a better human than almost all of the human population. i aspire to be like him, whether i do skating or table tennis. swimming or rock climbing, i won't make excuses to give up when he has injured himself and still gets up with "I'm okay, I'll try harder, I'll keep fighting." I liked how the video ended, it showed how hard he works yet he still fails but he still manages to get up and work even harder aiming for success. So, if you're working hard and you still fail, DO NOT GIVE UP!!
I know almost literally nothing about ice skating (I am here because I watched yuri on ice and yt thought it should recommend me skating stuff now), but that move in first segment... from some angles it really looks like he’s defying physics. All the other achievements are spectacular, he’s the best, but that first one strikes me as particularly not human, if less flashy and very likely less difficult than the super hard spin combos. He looks like an angel floating around, just chilling in the air before he remembers to resume his “human act” and decides to fall back down again, and before people get too suspicious of the lack of gravity.
In conclusion, he’s great, and in my experience of how artistic sports look from an outside perspective VS how they look when you know what’s going on, that means he is so incredibly talented and I don’t even realize how hard everything he’s doing is (together, of course, with all the other skaters doing crazy shit... the sport itself already sounds insanely difficult to me so lol)

He has musicality in everything he does.
He is an amazing athlete, and has superhuman drive. Especially knowing that he has Asthma as well so extreme temperatures like being in a ice rink would make that worse. He pushes himself to his limits all the time just to surpass his previous self and personally i admire that about him very much. No matter what this fan of his will always remain a fan of his. He is worth our support and dedication as his fans just like he gives to the sport and art of figure skating. That is how i truly feel on the matter ^_^

I saw his skating live once and got the chance to skate on the same ice and high five him for a skating event thing I managed to get in to a long time ago. I still think it was all a dream but I love his skating so much.

Yuzuru is my idol and I look up to him. He goes thru pain and yet he still skates while he's injured, that's insane.
You can tell he really has a passion for the sport. I can almost see him at practice having a good day and just asking his coach if he could try all these crazy things and the coach is probably like "We'll work on it.", and then he goes home and tries to do it in his living room or in a hallway.
I don't know anything about this man, but the only thing I know it's that he doesn't forget that he is human, he is a straight up god, he is cool!!
Yuzuru is an incredible figure skater/skater but never once have I forgotten that he's still human. No matter what incredible tricks or out of this world performances he does, Yuzuru is still a human being, he's not some inhuman deity or something but his presence makes him feel and look like he is, but that also goes to show how amazing Yuzuru is and we love you just the way you are.😊😊😊

He's amazing! What I also love is his musicality and the emotion he always puts in his skating. It's magical to watch. He also uses his whole body (including the head and the fingers even) to express the music. I really really love his skating and the effort he puts in it. He seems also so kind and humble off the stage and has donated his Olympic money to his home city that was affected by an earthquake.
