Hi guys! My name is Jason Leung, I am a 4th Dan in Shotokan Karate, and have been training for over 20 years.
In today’s Karate Lesson we are learning Kata Heian Godan! Heian Godan is a strong fast paced kata, and has a wide variety of karate waza.
In Heian Godan, we are introduced to a powerful jump!

Another great video! As of late, I've been cross-training in Shotokan and I've been focusing on the Heian/Pinan kata. I've noticed that there are variations in the ending of Godan from numerous lineages of Shotokan. Personally I like the kosa-dachi better because I find it easier to transition from.

It was interesting to see this video since I just wanted to revise it since for my karaté exam I need to do every kata from heian Shodan to tekki shodan but I noticed that depending from where you come from some movements differ, but otherwise this video helped alot thank you

Thanks, I now realise that for years I've been missing the hand move between the first and second manji uki, my sensi keeps going over this, and it took a lot of fwd and rewind to get my head around that hand swap as you turn, but it feels so much more natural now. Ossu.

Hi Phil,
I totally understand your feeling of “why we must do that”. To be honest, I don’t have a good answer for you. I’m assuming it is bunkai or application. But that is not my expertise. I do not spend too much of my time theorizing the “perfect” bunkai. Instead I focus most of my time trying to perfect the fundamental principles of my karate (balance, power, center, kime, power transfer, zanshin).

I am currently a green belt, and grading june 1st for my blue belt, when i go for my purple belt i gotta do this kata and this kata is hard af

Hey dude, Is this kata supposed to be performed fast and slow in certain points or do I need to go at a specific speed for all the moves?
depends on your school or instructor, each perform the kata with slight variations
