Boston accents are iconic in film and television. It is the local accent of Eastern New England, specifically to the city of Boston and its suburbs. However, Boston slang words and accents are also used throughout all of the states of New England.
Actors like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg made the accent famous in several of their films. Movies like The Departed, Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Good Will Hunting, Mystic River and Spotlight have made Boston a desired city to tell stories in.
Bostonian's take pride in being from Boston, and we express it through their thick accents and unusual slang words. I hope you enjoy this video and have some fun trying some of our slang words out! :) - Zábava
Where are YOU from?? And what's your favorite slang word? Doesn't have to Boston!
Heyyyyyy Step-dad I'm Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 born and raised in Chicago.
@@ivyrivera8081 nice!

James Deveney Productions im from beverly MA

“Dressed like they’re about to invade France in 1940” 😂
I went to undergrad in Chicago and when people didn’t understand the word “pockabook” I literally could not come up with another descriptor. “I don’t know! A pockabook! What else is there?!”
Purse for smart people!
I swear to God I didn't even know pockabook was a Boston thing! What the hell else would ya call it??
And the people in Chicago shouldn't judge accents
I am a New Englander and this is exactly how we say pockabook aka pocketbook 😂😂😂
You went to Chi-town? eww!
"A colorful emergency room" LOL! So on point.
Yeah, that was funny
Fun fact: The Friendly’s in Billerica is now an Urgent Care lol So it literally turned into an ER
I’d say Medford is pronounced, Med-fid. Yes, i’m from Mass and he is spot on.
YES! I’m a Med-fid girl. People would always say you’re from Meffa. I’ve never heard a Medfid person call it Meffa.
Technically yeah that's how we say it , but meffah is another level of shinanigans . South Medfid kid
Slight correction- I would say that the first "D" can be soft- "Mef-fid". Of course, the fact that Powdah house Circle and Davis Sqayah have gone yupscale is criminal.
"MEFF-uh."
I've always heard Medfid, until comedians started saying Meffa.
I come from Yorkshire in the North of England. We say, pahk, cah, gahden, parlah, monstah. You also pronounce Worcester correctly!
Ya mutha!
YEAH!
Helllooooo 😊
Hello to our cousins cross the pond! Wicked pissah, mate!
I’m from Cambridge but it always feels like I’m going to a different state when I go to Boston
Imagine your from Worcester!
I think that goes reverse for the rest of us normal Massholes. Always felt weird being in Cambridge working at Dickson Bros. 😂 Then again I'm a Grant from south Medfah
YOU ARE!
fun fact about the green mosnter: the whole reason it was built was not to put seats up there, but to stop people from sitting on top of the car dealership and watching the game without a ticket. there used to be hill that was in play too. and yes, the ladder on the monster is in play.
You're 100% right. I'll always remember the home run derby at Fenway when those roid monsters were blasting balls over the monster alllll night
my ultimate dream is to go to Fenway and see the Red Sox play. Been a huge fan for a very long time. :-)
Lol thanks for that history lesson but I think you meant to say “ladduh” instead of ladder. 👍🏼
@@74artgrrl u rite
My wife is from Boston, I’m from Texass.. my first Fenway game was special.. first thing I noticed were all the women in attendance… then a fight broke out in front of us between 2 women.. as they were being escorted out, the whole section erupted into 🎼hey, hey, hey… goodbye!!🎼.. then there was a rain delay, and we were walking down the steps, and my son asked me about the rain delay rules, and I wasn’t sure…. So, a girl about 10 yo or so was walking in front of us, and she turned around and matter of factly explained the rules… it was a culture shock for sure.. my wife just simply said, ‘Welcome to Baahston’ .. thanks for these terms.. I already knew most of them…. Just like your muth-ah! 😂These are great… subbed.
Ok, but why are these videos so entertaining? Like I don’t see anyone talk about Massachusetts and even Boston so it’s awesome to see someone talk about something I actually know!
😁
You should also look up Gary Gulman. He’s hilarious!
WHAT??????????????????????????
Being a Bostonian I can approve this video is correct
SPOKEN LIKE TRUE OBAMA SUPPORTER!
I'm from Rhode Island so, basically Boston adjacent. My favorite expression from RI is JEET? (did you eat?) No, JU? (no, did you?)
I'm laughing so hard cause I never realized I spoke like this but it's from talkin so fast 😂
You didn't need the translation.
"Jeet jet?" "No, joo?"
Your two slang videos have helped give credibility to a story I wrote set in Boston.
Lol that’s dope
I moved to Boston last year and the rotary made me so confused. I thought the sign was for a rotary club lol
I've lived in MA all my life, and there are so many words that I didn't know were considered slang. I thought everyone used the word Tool....
I’m originally from the south, and the word is used in the same way down there, at least in areas I lived in.
I’m originally from central mass and when I was a kid I when I went to Florida for vacation and asked the hotel clerk where the bubla was cuz I was thirsty and she had no idear what the hell I was talking about 😂
I’m from SoCal and definitely still use tool, though it was more of a 2000’s thing here
You're so correct about Boston slang!
Bruh I love ya I moved half way around the world and this helps so much with my homesickness you’re wicked awesome
Spot on. Some are specific to Boston but a lot of these were part of growing up along the NH/VT border up north.
Love your video. After living here 17 years and counting, this is so true and funny!
I love Boston accents! I could watch you all day 😍

I moved from Boston to Atlanta and NO ONE understands anything I'm saying. Lol
Omg the slushes at the little league snack shacks! These videos bring back my entire childhood. Love it!
“ ON DEAD DOGGS” is the most common used slang term in Boston. In the ghetto that is. #Roxbury #Dorchester #Mattapan #HydePark #SoutHEnd #JP 💥💥💥

I often hear Wistah as well as Woostah. And so true about Frieindly's.
Never heard the Cape refered to as The Boot of Massachusetts ever.
I drive by the shuttered Friendlies in Saugus and Stoneham all the time and it makes me sad. Used to take my sonny boy there all the time when he was younger.
I'm from Philadelphia, and we got Friendly's down here, too!
And we say "jawn" to refer to any object we don't know or remember the name for.
"Yo, Billy, pass me that jawn over there".
Hoagies! Everyone there calls a grinder a hoagie!
So funny because this is spot on. I'm from there
Aye bro.....stop it, I can’t breathe 😂😂

The accent and the way you speak reminds me so much of my first language (North European).
Dude your pretty funny..keep up good work
as someone from New Bedford, this is 200% accurate.
I live in New Bedford (New Befahd) also. Both his accent videos are awesome.
I’m from New Bedford and I can also confirm we use every single one of theses words
Born and raised in New Bedford (New Befahd). I think we might have a deeper accent then Boston.
"Decent!" ('Dee-cent!'). Wicked Neat! Super cool.
Lowell got the boot mill meal
When I moved from Boston to South Carolina, I ended up in hot watah, because I couldn’t distinguish the parlor from the den🤣
I love Friendly's!!!!
the best!
I've got a few, "cold tea" at the Moon Villa, mass ave, com ave, macaroni and gravy, cahf (cafeteria), Southie, tonic.
Hahaha! My family moved to Seattle when I was a kid and my dad ordered a tonic (when we first got there) and was SO confused when they gave him tonic water.
Very accurate lol
Ayyyy dairy joooyyy I live in Maine but I basically live in Boston because I’m dying 😂 mostly in Boston children’s hospital and I love your Boston slang videos
You're dying!? Whats wrong bud. I'm glad you enjoy them

He's right you know. I left Somerville 50 years ago.
I'm from Bedford (in between Lexington and Concord) and the looks i get when i go to an outa state packie and ask about nips wicked funny
Hey, that's how we say Worcester in the UK too, so much so that Seabrook used to deliberately misspell it that way on "wuster sauce" flavoured crisps.
Lol I figured! We have a lot of towns here that end in "ham" like Framingham, Waltham, Dedham, which I'm sure originated from the UK
I grew up saying parlor, and my grandparents said dungarees…lol. Pockabook yes, khed and pissa!! High school memories….lol. Yep, the T. My childhood coming alive watching this
I’m from Worcester and I couldn’t agree more
🤣

I live in a town near Boston and I died laughing
The funniest thing was about friendly's!!!! I about died laughing when he said you go there as an adult and realize, this place is a shithole lol! Monstah sundaes were the best thing other than hoodsies to get as a kid. Love my home state!!
Part 3!
Lol there’s no Dairy Joy in southern MA! So I’ve never heard of it
Supa funny khed!!!!
The Charles is actually clean now!
Worcester is a town in England and you are pronouncing it correctly. Most of the places in and around Mass are of English origin, Even Boston is named after the original Boston in England.
Thats because that is where they originated from and couldnt pronounce the Indian names!
Ohhh. And New England is named that cuz they were from Old England. All makes sense now.
Don't forget Bicester.
Wicked pissa video kid. Cacha lata kid!😁👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Wistahhh !!!
You are WICKED awesome, kid.
Thanks!
My utter fav is the New York. But this is also very likable .
I’m from Boston and my favorite slang is probably bangin a uwie. I don’t live there anymore but I have actually used that term without thinking about where it could’ve come from. My family isn’t from there so...😂
He talks about that in Part 1😂
Braintree. The first time I read about it I thought that it was a joke. But it is a real place. Wanna visit Massachusetts one day.
Love from Singapore.
It is real!
I love your voice hahaha
I'm an actor tryna learn the accent and slang. Very helpful!
I’m from East Boston and these are all so true 🤣

Kappy's is the only reason I go to Medford LOL
You forgot to mention how much the green line screams bloody murder pulling into the t station
My favorite stop on the green line D is "Eliot" because it reminds me of ET... "Eliottt" LOL
The Charles *dirty water* 😂👍
my moms from new bedford so im just sitting here listening to the background of my second language😭😭
LOL
I'm born and raised in New Bedford (New Befahd). I actually think we might have a worse accent.
Friendly's only had Milk-shakes (which has 2 red scoops of ice cream) and they had Fribbles, which had 3 green scoops of ice milk). Friendly's never had Frappe's. I put in my time there. When your family finally had enough sober people to move out of Medford, they must have made it all the way to Saugus. Another beautiful town.
I need a fuckin part 3
On it!
Funny shit 😊
Brooklyn!!!!!
