Boston accents are iconic in film and television. It is the local accent of Eastern New England, specifically to the city of Boston and its suburbs. However, Boston slang words and accents are also used throughout all of the states of New England.
Actors like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg made the accent famous in several of their films. Movies like The Departed, Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Good Will Hunting, Mystic River and Spotlight have made Boston a desired city to tell stories in.
Bostonian's take pride in being from Boston, and we express it through their thick accents and unusual slang words. I hope you enjoy this video and have some fun trying some of our slang words out! :) - Zábava
The descriptions of Townies and Yuppies is SPOT ON. No exaggeration. "They help their fathers do drywall, but only on the weekends" fuckin killed me.
This kid's wicked funny.
“The city employees are pretending to lay cement for 10 days straight” OMG YES HAHAHA
If you know you know 😂
🤣🤣🤣
As a native Masshole and local driver, I can confirm, in Mass, there is Winter season and 3 seasons of construction! Once those orange cones bloom, its over!
As a person who has grown up in Boston I can confirm that all of these are true
Definitely all are true though Dunkin Donuts also goes by Dunks on the North Shore
Cape cod is an arm not a boot lol but yes everything is correct hahaha
Nobody says wicked pissa tho c'mon
@@jamesmahoney3821 Not since 1977 ;)
What part of Boston are you from bro...because I’m from Roxbury and we don’t talk or act like this
“Suppuh is dinnuh.”😂
In the south, dinner is supper.
Who is “supper” do you mean suppah?
Amen!
Or just dinner depends on who's saying it
@@Skippy.Dinglechalk sup-per just say it subtle
@@Skippy.Dinglechalk
We love our hard R's down here.
In Australia dinner is the last meal of the day.
As someone who grew up as a Cambridge townie, this is the best and most accurate video yet on Boston slang. 100% true.
Holy shit, Cambridge person here too!
As someone from the Bronx, hearing this accent is fucking glorious.
I'm from Australia and LOVE a Boston accent. I think I'm inlove
Yeah!Sound like similar!
And the Australian accent is wicked cool
@@rogerdean5313 word!
I'm from Australia also (Brisbane) and my doctor is from Boston... Marguerite Insolia does some videos on Boston accents
I can relate, though I also LOVE the Boston sports and slang. and I'm an Aussie.
I am a native Bostonian, but my parents moved the family to California when I was six. So, I grew up hearing both of my parents thick Boston accents. Here are a few more Bostonisms that I remember:
tonic = soda
frapp = milk shake
dinner = lunch
pocketbook = woman's purse
parlor = living room
aunt is pronounced "awwnt" in Boston, not "ant"
and...my parents pronounced California as "Ca-li-FAWN-ya".
Frappe
I will never get used to ant for aunt. I moved to New Mexico (regret) and have gotten confused looks when I say pocketbook. God, I miss the Northeast.
@@zoponex3224 Same here. I still pronounce it as 'awwnt'.
@@davidberlant5096 cause that's the right way!
Go find Pahht 2, most of these are in there!
I cried at Boston dads always having tape measures on their belt
I'm born and raised in South Boston, still here. This is pretty good. Nice job, kid!
As a new Hampshirite I'm enjoying seeing what's just you guys, what's us too, and what we use alternately with the normal word
I was born and raised in massachusetts. I moved to California when I was 25. People looked at me like I was speaking a different language 🤣 my husband still makes fun of me for saying “carriage” and not “shopping cart” 🤣
I moved to TN and same experience as you haha
In Australia, we typically say trolley and not "carriage" or shopping cart. I can assure ya on that
I can’t believe this isn’t common sense to everyone else
Grace Scott I know right
Right!
Kappy’s 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I want to live in Boston. So im here to learning
Amadeus2248 replace every “very” with “wicked” and you’ll fit right in
As someone who lives in Massachusetts very close to Boston, all of these are very true! I about DIED LAUGHING about the Nor'Easter section cause its spot on! And ESPECIALLY the Pike! Omg, the city employees are pretending to lay cement for 8 days straight/the tolls were classic!
“When ur buddy Mikey is driving and he’s missed the exit for the fourth god damn time in a row” I actually said this 😂😂
I was born and raised 12 miles north of Boston. I moved away 20 years ago because I couldn't deal with the winters but I visit every year. After 5 minutes my accent comes back and I feel like me again. Loved this! Love hearing the accent. I miss the people but not the winters!
Get out of the fuking caa
Twelve miles nawth? Salem?
My grandma is from Boston and she ALWAYS says clicker
CLICKAAHH
We were different. It was the "changah" in my family.
Long time since I lived in Boston & I don't talk that way anymore but what a joy to hear it again -- *thank you!*
Glad you enjoyed it!
My late mother in law had such a lovely Boston accent Miss hearing her beautiful voice
I’ve never seen a more accurate video as a fellow masshole I can conform
😎
I’m from Boston and this is the best thing ever make a part 2 please
Started writing paahht 2 last night! I'll try and film it and get it up before thanksgiving
4 Three the fireman name Christopher on TV show Chicago Fire what accent does he have he talks different, it sounds like he's talking out of his nose?
I'm from Conn but could have used this 30 years ago when I first moved here! It's never too late to learn though!
How about explaining the differences between towns in Boston? Cambridge v. Somerville, Medford v. Malden
Southie v. anywhere
What part of Boston are you from?
Boston accent is music to my ears. Laughed hard 😂😂😂 more please
Coming soon :)
Born in Quincy but moved to Toronto Canada when 4 years old. Now i understand what my father was prattling on about in my youth....
This is so spot on and hilarious. Lived and worked in boston for 5 years and just recently moved away - this really made me miss it. Best city in the world
That's amazing Kyrsti! Yea I grew up there, moved to LA 5 years ago though, miss it every day besides the blizzaahhds
Especially for a girl from a boring continent/country (Australia) with lousy, boring sport teams. (Like the Paramatta eels, Bulldogs, and others)
This is entirely correct. Living in boston, I can confirm that I hear this literally everyday one way or the other. The culture notes are on point! The clicker hierarchy…I felt that.
I'm from Texas. Slow draw linguistics here so love the energy and embedded humor in Boston accents. Entertaining video!!!
Banging a U-ie has actually made its way across the US. Say that in Utah and people would know what you mean. Thanks for your sharing your culture, Boston 🙌🏻
It's pretty common in Jersey too
7:36 "I've paid a lot less for a lot more "in or outs" Classic! 😂
I grew up there for the first 9 years of my life. All the memories are coming back. I miss boston
He is over doing our accent, he is throwing in a New York accent, lol. But yes we drop our r’s. Help their father do drywall lmao,. Wicked funny !
Think that’s the point of the video
Not! Some of us do sound like this exacly.
He is. He's too young to have an accent as thick as that.
I’m a southerner so this was fun!
I do a mean fake Texas accent! What part of the south are you from?
Georgia and I have a hard time understanding
I’m from Southwest Va! I loved this!!!
@Meade Vlog channel did you just blow in from stupid town?
@@JamesDeveneyProductions lol Georgia!
It's a whole ass foreign language ...
People ought to hear the accent on the Cape. It’s the same. I’m a “wash-a-shore” (not a native) so I get a kick out of it, but I can hear my accent changing. My husband is a native. Grew up in Orleans. He lost his accent over the years but got it back fast when we moved back. Bless his little hadht.😄
I went to college in New England and learned all of this lovely language from my new found friends lol. Good times. The one term I didn't need translated back then was "bang a uie" as where I'm from we say " bussa U" which means the same thing so I was able to figure it while driving with my college mates lol.
Born in Lowell, moved to Illinois about 20 years ago. It's refreshing to hear the slang again. Too funny!! This video is wicked pissah for sure!!
Lowell, MA. Stand up
St. Joseph's hospital......Lowell MA
Been around the country and the world, but 01850.. ... will forever be my home.
I live in CT, have lived in this state all my life. I grew up with the word 'Packie.' But we write it Packy. I didn't know this was a New
Englander term till I visited a friend in FL, in 2019. Then she just shared to every Uber driver down there what 'I' called a Liquor Store. LOL!!!!!!
I grew up in Syracuse, and the accent is close. I laughed so loud that my "bas" looked at me like I was crazy. Spot on.
ur telling me people actually call them shopping carts and actually say “liquor stores”
That's exactly what I'm telling you
Sarah Frazier - Right ?
There called packeys. To buy your boose
Sarah, I lived in the next city ovahhh from this guy, in North Cambridge (blue collar area), and I can tell you people I grew up with almost always said "packey" instead of liquor store. Thing about Bostonians/Boston accents is most words sound choppy and shortened, which is by design. For example, if you knew a guy with the last name Sullivan, then he became "Sully" or "Sul" or similarly with even a two-accent last name in Kelly, which will become "Kel" within minutes.
Mike S i know haha, i'm from mass too. it just surprised me people don't call a liquor store a packey
Lmfao The canadian " Nova Scotian" accent is so scarily exact sounding to the " boston" accent. My Ma grew up in the east coast of Canada. About two hours over the harbor to Boston from Halifax . Basically my moms side of the family sounds like they are from the departed 😂😂😫☠💀♥️
I met a young lady from Nova Scotia years ago; we were at George's island, and she RAN LIKE MAD to see some Canadian Geese! I asked her if she'd ever seen them before: she said NO. I suppose the geese are moving farther and farther south . . .
FINALLY, SOMEONE DOING A REAL BOSTON ACCENT AND LOVING THE BOSTON SLANG
"She paid."
Fucking legend
Yoooo Milk and Bread is SOOOOO TRUE. My Ma used to always tell me “YO GET ALL THE WONDA BREAD YOU CAN FIND, WE GOTTA NO EASTA COMIN”
The friggin boat shoes had me 🤣!!!
I was born and lived in Boston til I was 8 and moved to the Midwest. I love hearing Boston accent. My mother was a lifeling Southie til we moved. She still used all those phrases and never lost her accent. People look at her funny when she talks. But I understand every word you said. It brings me right back to Mass.
I grew up in Houston Texas, moved to Massachusetts in 1993, stayed until 2011, Came back to Texas and everyone seemed to feel intimidated by the accent I picked up in Mass. lol. I like watching these videos to keep my accent going, been told lately I don't have it anymore :-(
BTW There are Dunkies in Houston so I'm good for that.
But do they know what "a regular" is at the TX dunkies?
I travel to MA for work every so often and wanted to perfect my “New England” accent so I don’t get beat up for being from NJ. Stumbled across this video which is hilarious and highly educational. Thanks! lol
As a life long resident of Massachusetts, born in Jamaica Plain, and brought up in the South Shore, your performance was spot-on perfect and a joy to listen to.
My ex lives in JP! It's changed so much. Glad you could relate to it bud
And yes, the clicka hierarchy is also prevalent in Russia. "Uh toljuh - bostonians uh russians!"
The remote part “clicker” took me out😭😂‼️
🤣🤣
This is ACTUAL Boston slang czcams.com/video/5J_a2iibvgg/video.html
Not to be confused with " blinkah", the left/right turn directionals in your car 😂🤣
I'm from Houston, TX & I call the tv remote a clicker 🤷♀️
Omg this makes me SOOOO FRIGGIN’ HOMESICK😩😩😩! I I’m the only Bostonian in a house full of GA peaches (the hubs & my kiddos) & they make fun of my accent ALL THE TIME🤦🏾♀️! Lol...my accent is the strongest after I talk to my family back home & my household spends the rest of the day mocking me🤦🏾♀️...
You're not alone Christina. Born in Mass., I moved to Illinois about 20 years ago and have heard a lot about my 'accent' - which I still don't think I have. LOL. Like you, it really comes out when I talk to family back home.
This needs more exposure
“Also know as a big ass fuckin’ snowstorm” is absolutely amazing. I live just outside of Boston and all of these are perfect
Absolutely hilarious!! Please make more - cracking up at every explanation!! 🙌🏻
My dad's side is from West Quincy and my great aunt recently passed away. Absolutely love the accent!
I was born in Somerville 86 years ago......He's talking NORMAL to me......Ha.....What accent?......
Same here only 68 years ago. Normal, of course!
Glad to see the kids still say "No sah" and "Yes sah". Cracked my ass up!! Ya fuk!! :)
Regards, Joey Bagadonuts...
Well done. Lotta laughs. Wicked funny.
Being a lifelong Masshole myself, I was waiting for him to explain what a “Pockabook” is. My mother would always say… “Go get the lighter outta my pockabook!” Also what “Jimmies” are… People outside of New England never seem to know that one.
Yeahhhh pockabook... i always get chocolate Jimmie on my cone
I still call it a pocketbook lol.
The jimmies comment makes me want ice cream now lol
This was great! I feel so informed on Boston slang now!😄 My daughter's boyfriend lives in Boston, I should share this with her!
You should! He'd definitely enjoy it, let me know what he thinks! Thanks for watching :)
Love this proud of being a bostonian from Somerville mass
Whats funny is I'm from Wisconsin and we call it a bubbler as well. I now live in Boston so we understand each other. I did have to learn some Boston phrases. I call a liquor store a packie but I dont say wicked pissa, lol. Btw, you are f'n funny!
I'm learning more accents to spice up my D&D game and improve my voice acting work and I gotta say, this stuff actually is great practice! Thank you!
a Dwarf using a Boston Accent!
I’m from NYC and it’s like I’m listening to my Quincy boyfriend right now! Amazingly funny and true! ❤️
and you say "Quin-zee" not "Quin-see", right?
Love Boston n its people
he's on point about the gold fever wings at the 9's

Yes! Thanks!
I am just so happy. For one, this is prime research for a novel I am writing. Two, we in wisconsin use the word bubbler for the same meaning where I live
Wicked funny. Thanks for a good laughs. Almost had my DD regular come out my nose over this video.
I've lived in Mass my whole life and this guy sums up every southie kid I've ever met. Also didnt know barrel was regional..
My wife is from philly and looked at me like I had 3 heads when I called a shopping cart a carriage lol

Man this was great! I visited Boston for the first time this week. Loved the accent! I’m from Georgia so first time I’ve really heard this accent in person. This I how I found your video haha great video👍
Also, ate at santarpios pizza and nicks in south Boston near Logan. You familiar with those? Good food. Lobster roll at nicks pizza at santarpios.
As a person from Boston I was laughing my ass off at how true this is
Some people try to make CZcams videos about the Boston slang but this one is by far the most accurate I’ve seen
😂 Boston slang and accent, we all need to know this! Thanks for the lesson! lol LOVE it!
I just played your video for a friend from Pennsylvania. She’s rolling on the floor.
This is hilarious! I remember using a lot of these terms when I lived in Hartford, CT as a kid. We used to say "Dis Cat" ["this cat"] when talking about someone doing something dumb. When I moved south to NC, people didn't know what I was referencing when I said "dis cat." They were like, "What cat?" SMH.
😂😂😂😂
Hm. "Dis cat" sounds sorta New Yorkian; musicians use that term a lot.
@@kraka2oanIner I’m certain Hartford CT cats were influenced by NYers.
the most entertaining/informative videos ever for me. thank you!
Love the slang. Love the commercial with John Krasinski, Chris Evans "Look whose got smart park"
2:04 big a$$ f!cking snow storm 😅 For some reason the way you said it was very soothing 🤗
This is vital information. I'm starting a DnD campaign where all the dwarves are bostonians
I literally came here to learn how to voice my kenku warlock who grew up on the streets and accidentally made a deal with a demon while drunk and beaten within an inch of his life. For some reason that just said “Boston” to me.
just go to southie you'll see some in real life

Having grown up in Lowell, every single one of those terms and phrases was spoken by everyone around me. Then about 20 years ago I moved to Illinois. I was taken aback when someone did not know what a garbage barrel was. Out here, they don't go to a doctah, they go to a dahctor. LOL
