It's a pretty good day when the gear you're wearing cost more than the bike you're riding & you both make it back home in fully working condition.
And it's not just track bikes you can get cheap on marketplace when you sort by cheapest, as long as you're not too fussed about looks. I bought all 4 of my current motorcycles that way & it's how I got an Aprilia Shiver that was ready to ride for less than the cost of a used Grom.

The reason why MSRH is scary is because of
    1) the insane bumps/seams on the back straight
    2) when the sun comes out after it rains it weeps like crazy. That's why there were so many crashes in E/A on Sunday.
You need really good forks/shocks to get grip on this track. It's not surprising your (probably ancient?) shock made it hard to pin it in the back straight.

Back when I was young and single, I roadraced and flogged an F3 as an endurance bike. Of all the options available in the late 90's, the CBR 600's were the easiest to ride fast (as I recall). But I approached it from a different angle... my Main track bike was an RS125 (I'm 6'4", monkey... football anyone?), it's all about the corner speed. Something I'd had impressed on my as a street rider when I went from an 1100 to a 500 years earlier and had to learn how to carry corner speed to keep up with my buddies.
Anyway, my suggestion since then has Always been to find a slow bike that handles great as a beginner track bike. They're always cheap, and it'll usually take 10~15 sessions before you even get your abilities Close to that of the bike. Then when you move on to something that has straight line speed, you're not an anchor in the corners. Don't be a point-n-shoot rider.

When Spite and I initially talked about putting this package together last november, it was an eye opener seeing the difference between the stock spring rate and the recommended/actual spring rate we ended up getting.
Front is rated at 0.66 kg/mm and we're bumping that up to 1.00kg/mm (52% increase), the rear didn't need quite as much attention, as we went up from 14.2 kg/mm to 16kg/mm, so only a 14% difference there.
the real fun part is when he puts that together with the RCS-19. It took a bit of convincing for him to sign off on me getting it for him, but I think he'll really appreciate just how communicative that master cylinder is.
