    Excellent project, only one point that made me curious is that the LM7805 is not recommended to receive this 30v voltage directly at the input, according to the datasheet

    • @RadioWerwolf
      @RadioWerwolf Před 2 lety +2

      Actually in Texas Instruments and CTIL datasheets, the absolute maximum has been specified as 35V. So, 30V sits well below this value, but with such a large input voltage, main concern would be heat dissipation.

      Well answered by @Levent SALT , actually here lm317 is only controlling voltage and MJE2955 is controlling current and also acts as current booster as lm317 can only provide 1.5A max, so MJE2955 will dissipate heat and needs good heatsink.

      It is called transistor or heatsink insulator pads, also you need M8 Nylon step washer for screws

      Please note that, calculating from datasheet data*, your total thermal resistance from the MJE 2955 to the air (assuming 40°C air surrounding the heatsink) must not exceed 2W/°C. Any heatsink insulation will add to the total thermal resistance junction - air, so you will need a heatsink of around 1.5°C/W which you may find large and expensive. Two tips here:
      1 - Mount the power transistor with no insulator, but instead isolate the heatsink from any other connection. This will save you some heatsink size and cost.
      2 - The MJE2955 has a maximum junction temperature of 150°C because it is plastic encapsulated**. The metal cased MJ2955 (no "E") has identical electrical characteristics and a maximum junction temperature of 200°C. This allows the use of a smaller (ie higher thermal resistance) heatsink. In this case the maximum thermal resistance can be around 3.8°C/W. The same principal applies here: you can save some heatsink size if you omit the insulating washer. The total thermal resistance must include this washer if you use it.
      *links to datasheets: pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/53666/FAIRCHILD/MJE2955.html
      pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/117132/ONSEMI/MJ2955.html
      ** The MJE2955 has a single mounting hole, set in the little metal tab. NOTE this doesn't assure sufficient contact with the heatsink. If you look inside commercial instruments you will see that they use this mounting hole, but also add a clip or strap across the plastic body, clamping it more effectively to the heatsink. THIS IS IMPORTANT.
      Finally (i) heatsinks are sold with their thermal resistance specified, so no trouble there.
      (ii) If you can mount a fan - maybe from an old computer power supply - you can generally halve the heatsink size. But the fan needs 12V DC.
      Feel free to ask for any further information you may require.
      Stay well. Clive.

    Lm317 can't give full 1.5 A even if datasheet says as when difference between input & output voltage increases multiplied by 1.5 A, the power dissipation will also increase so it can't dissipate more heat. It's only possible to draw 1.5 A if input voltage is reduced to lower voltage say 12 Volt so in that case at lowest output voltage the difference will be lower so the power dissipation. But if we need to make power supply upto 18 volt, we can draw maximum 1 A, so how we can make the Transistor conduct in that case?

You are one of the few who respect us. ....put the circuit (something very important, but how do we do it?). It cannot be that....there are other criminals who, to get a Like, we have no idea....of the circuit. They want fame and fame too! You get it with death. They are unscrupulous people. They don't care, they don't care about subscribers. Isn't it better to be sane and honest? What to get only likes? In addition, you also take the work of developing the PCB.
    Who does it? From amateur Electronica like your channel, I don't know if there will be 5?....the rest have thousands of users. They will find themselves just watching a video of Electronica. similar. They have the circuit on. Isn't that a good reason to go to sleep peacefully? SL2 and thank you very much.
