  • A switched-mode power supply ATX (SMPS) is an electronic circuit that converts power using switching devices that are turned on and off at high frequencies, and storage components such as inductors or capacitors to supply power. uses microcontroller / Ic to oscillate - most common IC is the TL494 or KA7500 - That are suitable for modifications it has many pins but the pin no 1 is used as feedback by voltage devider. So we will use pin 1 and a potentiometer ( 5K to 25K ) To adjust the voltage . if you think wow i can adjust it from 0v to 30v . thats not right . you need to use 3v rail 5v rail and 12v each rail gives different voltage like 12v rail will give 8v to 15v but if you use 12v+ and 12v - you will get 9v to 30v
    warning -[
before powering the atx please use a 100 watt lamp ]

FOR ANYONE CURIOUS: This will most likely *not* work on basically _any_ brand name PSU made in the last 12 years, as they will most likely have voltage monitoring to prevent Under and Over Voltage (among other protections) -- this means that is the voltage for +12V is increased to say, anything above 13V, the unit automatically turns off. In those cases, you'd need to also modify that circuit so that the voltage it's monitoring is also modified.
Pretty much every PSU I've seen that has protecting like this, puts it on a small vertically mounted circuit board, making it easy to see (sometimes without even taking anything apart). As is evident by the imagery of this unit, there are no extra circuit boards on this, making it possible.

🙄 Cheap Powersupply don't have protection

    • @DUKE_of_RAMBLE
      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE Před 2 lety +5

@@22smudger Sort of... The thing is, one key element you would actually _want_ in a Bench Top PSU like he made, would that it can deliver STABLE power levels.
*TL;DR -* The cheap units make it easy to modify, but, their old designs and crappy components may lead to dead electronics... even _before_ modification. Just be mindful about what you let it power...
MOST of these cheap no-protection Chinese PSUs are actually really old topologies (circuit design) and therefore are prone to experiencing lots of voltage fluctuation at times, namely when a load gets placed on a different voltage.
So a high load on 5V will likely cause 12V to drop down to say 11.2V. But also then, 3.3V will likely _rise_ and now might be outputting 4V! 😖
Furthermore, the older topologies weren't that great at limiting "voltage ripple", which are high speed (frequency) peaks and valleys on the rail that are occurring at millisecond intervals. It might only be at a change of 0.3V on the 12V rail, but electronics do NOT like ripple! If it gets too high (and 0.3V is indeed outside modern ATX certification standards) it'll likely kill what it's powering -- note that good PSUs can eventually suffer this fate when their capacitors 'dry out' so be cautious if reusing a PSU on new computer builds of its already 8+yrs old.

30V x 20A = 600W . You used 400W chinese psu so those 400w will be more like 200w~250w. Then on the blue wire is -12v to GND, so you make that voltage from diferent outputs + and - whitout gnd. This is not recomended.

As others have said output filter capacitors must be either removed for unused outputs or replaced with proper voltage rated ones. The case and fan should be retained and the case should be grounded. People should be aware of the hazardous line voltages present on the circuit board. Please don't be put off by the negativity, I for one appreciated what you did.

Don't do this, it is incredibly dangerous due to high DC voltages on the primary side and you will also need to change just about all the capacitors and zener diodes in the unit to support the higher voltage, to get higher currents you will have to replace a few resistors at minimum at worse the main transformers and MOSFETS will need changing. Besides that most PC PSU's have voltage and current protections . Just buy a proper bench power supply.

Thank you very much for the very interesting video. Please I have a few questions:
    1) At minute 5:18 of the video, you wrote "connect green(psu-on) with any black wire" but you actually showed a connection of the green wire with a gray wire instead of the black wire. Please clarify this?
    2) At minute 7:19 of the video, you wrote "brown and black" instead of saying "oranger and black" right because the brown color does not exist in the wires of the psu. Please clarify this? I asked these questions because I intend to make the same model of this adjustable atx. Big thanks.

Some Powersupply have different colours wires . And use a switch between green and black Wair because the 12v line can give 3v to 15v adjusting more then that will turn off the PSU .then you need to turn the switch green and black again

Thanks for the quick answer. I am not an electrician, but I am an electronics hobbyist. I learned it by correspondence in Belgium since the 1980s. Currently, I am a retired man. I install some electronic circuits as my favorite hobby. You say that in this circuit there is an electrical voltage equal to 300 volts of direct current. But in all cases, the output of this circuit does not exceed 30 volts, the yellow wire and the blue wire. As for the input current, it is 240 volts, which is the deadly current, so where did 300 volts direct current come from? Thank you.

But my question is: Is there a danger if I touch the variable resistor that I will place above the power supply body? Thank you.

30 v değeri için 20 amper doğru değil. -12v çıkışının amper değeri çok düşüktür. 300ma-500ma gibi yani 30v çıkışı ancak bukadar amper çıkışını verir. 15v için 20 amper geçerli olabilir.
20 amps is not correct for a 30v rating. The amperage value of the -12v output is very low. Like 300ma-500ma, that is, 30v output gives only that much amper output. 20 amps may be valid for 15v.

Hello sir I need cloosed loop baterry 12v lead acid to variabel voltage supply for me delco 12 si alternator I experiment lot with engines I use often amplifier ignition and hv ceramic capacitors so called plasma ignition but the unusual effect is that the starting charge on those old alternator goes up meaning I constantly back fead true the bulb unless I rev me engine more and the bulb goes off .
So culd you advice me what to do?
Shuld I use cloosed loop voltage supply and how much current and voltage is normal for those alternator regulators?
Also I have problems with xenon bulbs, dual filament bulbs and interacting multipel relays to back feading alternator what diode type shuld I use to prevent undesired effects?
Me alternator does bypass the integrated diode in the dashboard but still I think those ceramic capacitors might interfeare with ground potential on the alternator regulator .
So I only use the pin 1 bulb the pin2 suposedly is the sence pin but its bent inside the alternator case.
So I hoppe also if you culd point out where to put diodes on relays I use hella relays 2 pin buzzer,3pin blinker,4pin read defroster winscreen ,6pin wiper motor relays.
Im doing currently entire wire harnest in the car its classic Opel from the 80s.
So in the past I hade unusual problems like engine self aceletating when I turn lights on,or when blinker relay has corrosion on ground rear bulb holder and some black wire on key ignition starts to burn the engine behaves like Hit and Miss engine like some buzz coil so does the engine work in union with the blinker relay, also some times I get static chock and many times I end up with flat baterrys under charge or over charge the baterry.
So I hoppe to finde some thing manuali that can tell the alternator when to charge and at what rpm range also I must finde solution for those relays stoping them to do that strange staff and posibly controler or dimner circuet for xenon bulbs .
So I hoppe you understand me problem and can give me good advice .
Also I wuld like to avoid useing the car chassys as ground due to rosting problems those cars normali have so I hoppe there are virtual grounding circuets.
I have bunch of those mentioned relays so I wuld like to seperate them or at least control to some degree those anoying problems .

That's Quite a Big Question 😓 and you should use Led Bulbs instead of Xenon . That might help to store more changes in battery . And there should be an automatic voltage stabilizer i mean it regulates the voltage and current for the battery to charge from the alternator . And for dimming purposes there are some regulators for car that control brightness ... I'm not a car Engineer . So I don't know much about car ... But these Advice might help you
