    Nice job. I've modified a few ATX power supplies before, but I only modded them to be variable from 10v to 15v, a simple thing to do. Your job of making it go much lower than what I did is really tricky, and you pulled it off really well.

    This is the BEST video on ATX PSU conversion on the internet. Well done @kasyantv!
    Years ago, I modified an old ATX PSU, making Voltage _and_ Current adjustable, following to this video. This PSU has served me well for many years (and it still is).
    Adding buck converters is for pussies.
    This conversion is super cheap and solid. Any good electronics engineer should be able to do it.

    what about -12v & -5v outputs, as you have higher positive voltage on +12v output you'll have higher negative voltage on -12v and -5V outputs, so be carefully with capacitors at those outputs.
    Second thing: you have not removed R52 (100K) from pin2 so the voltage divider (which you had added and which is formed by two resistance 4k7 and 1k2) also depends on the R52 (100k) which will be found in parallel with 1k2.
    R52 is not always 100k for other ATX, so you must report it if it is taken into consideration (which is the case for your video) or remove it if we have designed to make a divider by only 4k7 and 1k2.
    your divider gives 1.0073V at pin 2, my ATX, the R52 has the value 4k7 thus the divider gives 0.845V at pin 2 which will modify the output voltage range.
    I missed the 5K1 between pin14 & pin2, so the overall divider will be: 4k7 // 5k1 between pin14 & pin2 AND 1k2 // 100k between pin2 & gnd , which gives 1.63V at pin2. finally 20k between output & pin1 AND 2k2 between pin1 and gnd will give us a maximum output voltage of 16.45V

You have removed the connection to the ground of the output transformer as well as the diodes which are connected to it to replace them by a diode bridge. It is logical but in your comments you don't mention it! Thanks for a possible response.

    Thank you for perfect work but I think it is complex and not easy at all any mistake or fault can destroy the circuit .. in short you can use five pieces of lm317 together to get high current( if you need it) and transformer to do so ..it's easy and simple and saver than pc power supply. .

    • @superdau
      @superdau Před 6 lety +2

      The video mentions you have to be careful, which is why it took so long to make a video about it.
      You can't do the same with an LM317. It is useless for currents above a few 100mA, especially when you need a low output voltage.

    Like all used computer SMPS units, this is not really the best approach for a LAB supply. It only just makes it as a 'rough and ready' wet cell automotive battery charger (as long as you take care using it) because the unit was never designed with the kind of mains isolation safety factor for such tasks....

    Nice job. But you wired the adjusting pot backwards. Turning it CCW (Counter Clock Wise) by tradition and convention should turn it down, not up.
    And you should add a resistor between the pot and pin 1 to limit the amount one can set the supply to. Otherwise it's easy as all heck to make a mistake, turn the knob CCW and think you're set to the lowest level when in fact you're set way above the voltage of the caps at the end of the 12V line. ALWAYS design with idiots in mind. Otherwise someone will build this and then blow it up.
