    It’s good you mentioned in the beginning that it’s our responsibility to stay clear of large ships..I definitely agree

    Aside from visibility, for a composite boat if you are going for the lightest weight clear coat gel adds the least weight, yellow the most (in a pure colour) but some fancy colour schemes with multiple colours and sparkles add even more weight.

    I think it depends on the sea / ocean where you are. For example, if it's on the Red Sea a red kayak is invisible. If you are on the Black Sea a black kayak is not indicated. In the Dead Sea a white kayak can be confused with salt in water ... and many other examples ... :)

      Ovidiu Kilingher have you been to the Red Sea or the Black Sea? I have. These seas has the same colour there as other seas. The Read sea looks like the Mediterranean Sea or the Indian Ocean and the Black Sea looks like a sea in more northern waters.
      And if you are joking with me, it was a good one. Lol.

      @All Seasons Kayaking It was a joke, I was on both sea (red and black) but for diving not for kayaking.

    I have yellow bathing shorts, so I tried to match them to my kayak. A yellow one 😜

    My illaga is white and black. My wife thought the chocolate and grey one would be invisible. I also have a Wilderness Systems Tempest in life jacket orange. For me, the jet skis are probably the biggest danger. Then again I was bumped by some sort of big fish the summer before last. That was pretty spooky.

    Do you think having reflective tape on the back of the paddle face would make it easier for a ship to see a kayak? I have a bright yellow 17' kayak. Very good video, thanks for posting it!

    • @JonasAlexanderson
      @JonasAlexanderson  Před 2 lety +1

      Reflecting tape is never bad but it doesn't make much difference unless you are paddling much in the dark.

    I’m thining about buying a dark blue one, a dark navy. Is that dark enough or is it to camouflaged being blue?

    • @JonasAlexanderson
      @JonasAlexanderson  Před rokem +1

      I think that is dark enough. But the most important is to stay away from boats. To bring a flare to be seen in an emergency is never wrong.

      I'm afraid black will be entirely too hot for my region, Red works for me. Plus I'll be in a skinboat. How do you like the black boat in warm weather?

      I live in Sweden and we only have a month where it might get hot. So to answer your question; no it will not.

    Different colours for everything, bi coloured kayak with contrasting colours and straight lines seperating colours. Straight lines rarely occur in nature and any colour can be invisible in different conditions so don't coordinate, it isn't a fashion show.

    • @JonasAlexanderson
      @JonasAlexanderson  Před 29 dny

      The thing is, no matter what colour you use, always expect that you are not seen. I have been a ship navigator for 35 years and know how hard it is to spot a kayak, no matter the colours of the kayak or paddler’s clothes.
