    Looks great! In the future, be sure to use a grommet in the knock outs on those metal boxes for the lights. It secures and protects the wires, while also closing that hole in the box to help keep debris out over time.

    great job. very nice looking porch. my son and I rebuilt the original porch that had a hip roof on his 90 year old house from the foundation up. at some point the original porch was torn down and replaced with an 8'x10' uncovered deck. we wanted to restore the original look to the house. wish this video was available last summer when we built it. it turned out great, though, despite our inexperience and never having dealt with a hip roof before. we've gotten tons of positive comments from people in town who remembered what the house used to look like before we restored the outside. we had originally gotten 4 of those LED lights but that was way too bright. We pared it down to 2 and that was plenty. very easy to install, too. we went with vinyl soffit and we built the soffit level instead of keeping the angle of the roof. It took us 3 months as well, working when we could. we finished the shingles the day before we got 3" of snow at the end of October. glad it's done now! that was a huge undertaking for us.

      @justaddwood  Před 2 lety

      Impressive! That's awesome. I was shocked at the light output from the cans. We mainly just use the fan lights or string lights really. Good call on using vinyl. Should last and last.

    • @justaddwood
      @justaddwood  Před 2 lety +1

      Choosing the right contractor can be tougher than building yourself for sure. Sorry you are unable to do it yourself. I would suggest looking at the contractor's references, lots and lots of references. Read all of the reviews! It is too easy these days with social media to gauge the skill and service of a company. I'd also advise to not pay much, if any, down or upfront. Good ones are out there, just keep looking and trust your instincts and the reviews.

This is the first and only video I have seen but like everyone else has said, well done and greatly narrated. I feel even more so confident I can do it. Any chance you have a list of all your materials? I know there are some tools I will need to get as well. Thanks for the video!

    • @justaddwood
      @justaddwood  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! Sorry, no real list to speak of. I just sort of imagined what I wanted to see in a particular place and used the measurements as a guide to order the materials. I usually added about 10% to the total measurements for screw ups and waste. I have more screw ups in some spots and more unused left over materials on others! haha. Tools is a tougher list if you don't already happen to own a bunch of them. Some are worth renting for a day or week or whatever, and some worth owning forever. I guess it all depends on your future needs also. And some jobs, like concrete, to me at least, I don't want to own any of the tools - it's not a job I want to do at all!

      Yeah, builders are super busy and pricing things extremely high right now because they don't need the work. Wait till the economy really slows and see what they are charging when they have no other work scheduled. Materials fluctuate too so take that into consideration. But good job researching builders in your area and not just going with the first one!

    Great video. Thank you for the detail. I'm getting ready to do the same thing. Mine will be 38'x12'. My problem is HOW to attach the ledger board. What size lags? How many? And how did you ensure you were hitting the studs behind the sheer wall? (My elevation is 12'). Thanks, ~Mike

    • @justaddwood
      @justaddwood  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I think I used GRK lag screws. They are allegedly stronger than lag bolts. On an exterior wall, studs are generally 16" on center - so if you can locate one stud, generally there will be another one about 16" away in either direction. I used 2 screws per stud. Good luck! You'll love it!
