Debby's a phenomenal singer who's vocal powers aren't discussed enough. She's also one of the greatest things ever on the planet Earth.
A great band with great songs and a superb singer who was absolutely gorgeous. How could they fail?
It's refreshing to hear someone as bright as Fil and he's speaking about Debbie Harry's stunning vocal gymnastics. Usually, comments will be all about her hotness.
Perhaps, not surprising that Debbie Harry made Pete Townshend's list of 5 authentic rock stars. Great band. Love that you selected this performance. Clem Burke is such a fantastic drummer, and Debbie is an icon.
I don't know if it's true but have heard Let My Love Open The Door was written about Debbie. So that would be pretty awesome!
Band in it's prime. Man, those four 70s albums are just tremendous.
It’s not often you see CZcams creator have the class to actually take the time to honour a request...thanks Fil
I think he honors them all, but The List is long!
Fil is the most amazing Professor of Music Appreciation on You Tube. I think he was around 20K subs when I joined and he hasn't changed.
Did I mention he is amazing?
No problem! Yes I get through the list one day at a time! 🤘
Wings of Pegasus ♥️♥️♥️
Fil is a classy guy
Damn! Clem Burke just kills it. I love the drums in most songs but especially in Blondie songs. He is a non stop drum machine. I really appreciate the analysis of Debbie Harry's vocals. She has been a fave of mine for years and she got a lot of flack for her vocals not being that great. She was never punk and she was never off. Her vocals were bang on.
She has an incredible voice. It works with so many musical styles. When she sang straight up rock or pop her voice had a really nice warmth to it. Although I do love her "attitude" voice and, of course, her high/disco singing. "Sunday Girl" had a bit of everything.
I wouldn't say never punk ,they were regulars at CBGB during the "punk" era, not UK punk but new wave punk I'd say,
A favourite of mine late 70's ,I wish I still had the giant poster ;)
I like his style more because he's NOT a drum machine...
@@herrbonk3635 dude just meant like a 'machine' - in terms of reliability and not allowing the energy to wane etc. _not_ soulless or without spirit I suspect that you know that either that or you're an idiot
She played with flavor flav in a Bidien. Can’t remember song rapture???? She introduced rap to white kids
This song is Amazing! Clem Burke drives the entire song, throughout! Clem was Premier Drums top endorser, after the passing of Keith Moon. Dreaming, just has that perfect lilt, and is very infectious.
Great to hear a professional opinion of Debbie's vocal. I've been a fan since the start. Debbie's utterly beautiful. Clems an explosion on drums. So full of energy. Dreaming is a classic Blondie song. So refreshing to hear a younger person's take on this classic tune. 😊
I love when Fil breaks out a guitar! Blondie was one of my favorite groups in college. Fun, happy memories!!
Imagine what a producer would try to do to Debby Harry's voice today.
No matter how good and tight the band, or gorgeous voice, you gotta have a great song.
Blondie had some great songs.
Literate enough to rhyme with verite
ursafan40 And they threw out the French phrase is quite frequently as well LOL
@@pbohearn Yes, that was always "a thing" with them!
Ha....I was waiting for someone to pick up on that too! 😉
Crazy to criticize her for expanding her horizons. Her #1 song 'Rapture' was the first rap song to chart.
April S right! I was going to mention that the people told me that’s totally not true. But isn’t it? I just remember me and all the other gay boys would love to rap to” rapture” at the bar LOL
@@pbohearn it's true. I double checked before I made the comment. 🕺🕺💃💃👍
I think that's why "critics" are called just that--they just criticize for the sake of criticizing. And I agree that it's crazy to do that when an artist expands their horizons, especially when doing so meets with success.
Actually Blondie's Rapture wasn't the first to chart. The first rap to chart was Rappers Delight by The Sugarhill Gang in 1979. Blondies Rapture was the first rap song to hit the number one spot in the USA. Both classic songs today and both sampled very heavy throughout the decades by other artists.
@FiatDuster Which song was " novelty tune"? Rapture was the first song to feature a lengthy rap verse that hit #1 on the Hot 100 and thanks to that song being such a big hit worldwide rap music was finally ushered into the mainstream and top 40 radio and the media took notice.
You have to remember at that time in music history rap music was considered fringe and ignored by the media and top 40 radio. So this song "Rapture" has it's place in music history being the very first song to have a lengthy rap verse in rap hit #1 on the Hot 100.
It took almost a decade later for another rap song to hit #1 and that was "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice and still a while later for a black artist to finally get a rap song to hit #1.
I’ve seen Blondie live so many times over the years, they are always tight and sound great. Clem still drums with amazing energy. Debbie is still a goddess.
Pop, rock, punk, dance, glam, all wrapped into one.....just saw them last year. Still rocking....and she’s trying to save the bees.....
Nostalgia....I always liked Clem Burke's drumming...
Gino Rossellini way too good for me. I’d be so lost 😂
The Animal...
Very much like a young Keith Moon. Also in the 90's I thought the drummer in Cast was a lot like Clem !
I'm a big fan of Burke as well, but a major difference between he and Moon is in timekeeping. In general, Keith's pyrotechnics were all in time, but frequently Clem's fiery fills are too fast and the rest of the band spends 1-2 measures afterwards finding him again. Once again, I'm a fan, but once you start to listen to a lot of his live shows, it becomes pretty evident.
Clem was a Ramone for a second.
Debbie is without doubt an all time classic beauty. Blondie is without doubt an all time classic band.
Debbie Harry is without a doubt an extremely talented SINGER. She is more than a pretty face.
She IS beautiful! A little anecdote: Debbie Harry has said that Andy Warhol told her that if he could have anyone's face, it would be hers.
I won The Blondie Album "Eat to The Beat" from a radio station back in 1979.
Great Album!
Debbie's voice is highly underated. Clem is so fun to watch.
'79 grad here, and this has been one of my all time favourites (like THAT spelling?) since then. That DRUMMER! Has there EVER been a more frenetic drummer or performance, as that?
Thank you, Fil!
Frenetic? Sure! But have you seen the old CZcams clip of " Costume character destroys drums"?
Yeah, his name was Keith. 🌙
This is my favorite song by Blondie. I love Clem Burke's drums on this one, including the studio version. A big regret of mine is showing up late to the venue and missing Blondie opening for the Kinks in around 1978. The Kinks were great, but I subsequently became a fan of Blondie and thus hated missing them.
i got exhausted just watching the drums.
I agree, a phenomonal drummer. My favourite drummer on CZcams though is "Costume Character destroys drums". Energetic - you bet!
There's definitely tons of attitude in "One Way or Another."
Or "Rip Her To Shreds" which was a song from Blondie's punk rock era. Another song with attitude was their cover of "Hanging On The Telephone" which is another song Deborah Harry sings that has stalker vibes just like One Way Or Another.
Debbie’s vocals are spot on. Deceptively simple. And No auto tune needed.
I'm relatively new to your videos.I'm 60 yrs old and you do not disappoint me.I really like how you bounce around thru the years and all genre.Keep up the awesome work!
On top of everything else of, Debbie is a great singer with a beautiful voice. I had such a major crush on her back on the day........said by millions of other guys.
and girls, too...even us straight ones. She was so all around wonderful and a stand up person, caring for her seriously ill partner, Chris Stein and becoming a major philanthropist.
Awesome reaction and review. I heard this for years before I realized how good the drums are. I true sleeper.
She was so huge back then, Bands don’t get crazy popular in these days anymore!!
Because bands today suck, unless they can tweak themselves in a studio. That's why they focus more on "dance routines" than their "music".
Two reasons for that all come down to the same problem - as a friend of mine who was a mastering eng at Mowtown used to say - there are very few places where you can get paid to suck anymore. By the time they started getting noticed they had hundred if not thousands of live shows behind them and had become polished.
MOST bands today are concerned with a WALL OF NOISE. Seems the only time it stops is when the lead guitar or keyboard wants to put out a couple notes.
Otherwise, they sound pretty much the same with different beat speed & titles.
@Big Bill O'Reilly SUPERB POINT, thanks. When I talked to Justin Hayward (also wrote M. Jagger the same question) if they ever thought of playing their songs with a different melody, or for say in a different genre. Justin said (in a slight perterbed tone) it was perfect the way it was. So without creating any friction I left that alone. To me it be interesting to hear it differently. HECK, the song just might make a re-release of it thus more $$.
@@malcolmdrake6137 Check out The War On Drugs: quality bands still exist.
I saw them on Saturday Night Live in the 1970's. They rocked it out on that small stage. Debbie is marvelous. A driving beat, killer guitar and bass all with her vocals make this a great performance.
Thank you for saying such nice things about Blondie. I ❤️ her music 🎵🎶
now this is something i can get next to.. she was my idol in the 70s. love the rummer.. has a great beat.
This rhythm section is so underrated it’s a crime . In their case punk rock means heroine. Pop rock means rehab . Debby has a song where she wrote , “ I’ll give you head and a shoulder to cry on “ . You have to love her .
1979 was a great year that continued rocks evolution and Blondie was a big part of that ! Blondie was magic to me ! Dreaming was like no other song !
Wow thanks for analyzing my favorite Blondie tune. Wow it seems like a dream way back in '79. Wow Debbie harry is a dream.
I got the chance to see Blondie at the Fox theatre in Atlanta, GA. The drummer is top notch. I also attended an Iggy Pop show where he was the drummer. One of the best American New Wave bands. Thanks WOP for the post.
I loved Blondie back then, and still do. I was in my 30's, and not into punk, so it was a refreshing to hear good pop rock. Her voice is so unique, as it is loud and powerful, while maintaining a high pitch, which is unusual and makes for a great sound. i still hear their songs on my radio station, and it usually creates a worm in my head that lasts for hours. Thanks Fil for a great analysis as always.
I was gonna say that drummer is really ambitious. Great song!
Fabulous performance by Blondie. I was in my late teens at the time and I was enthralled by Debbie's tough girl badass New Yorker attitude when she burst onto the scene. She represented a new type of empowered woman that we hadn't really seen before - different to the classic 'rock chicks' of the day like Pat Benatar, Suzie Quattro, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks & Heart. I loved watching Countdown every Sunday evening for years. Knowing Molly Meldrum, he would have intentionally played the song he felt would be a hit. Molly, himself a music producer, prided himself on discovering, exposing and supporting new talent.
Clem Burke just goes off on this song, just great to listen to and watch --- the whole song is great, love Blondie.
I love this performance! Vocals are pure timeless gold.
Clem is a beast too!
I like Blondie..cool talented chick..she DJ''s on Elvis Sirius XM channel sometimes....very knowledgeable..loves Elvis too...thanks Fil
(Johnny Carson voice) I did not know that!! Cool.
@@lynndow3185 Dana Carvey..best Johnny Carson impersonator
Debbie Harry is a cool talented chick, but Blondie is the name of the band.
Amazing walk down memory lane (was 17 going on 18 at the time) ... Today (or last time I checked) Blondie owns a house not far from where I use to live in Barwon Heads (near Geelong, Victoria, Australia) ... obviously one of her holiday houses around the world.
Clem Burke, not sure if true or not, but he apparently felt that he should have been the star. Great drummer, but never going to happen. He has now got his Bootleg Blondie setup. But in the 1970s. Just look at Debbie. I have never seen a woman able to bear her full mouth, teeth, gums, the lot and look totally stunning while doing it. One of the most fanciable women ever, her cheekbones, lips, eyes, every aspect of her face was perfect. Did her own make-up. And by the time she was a mainstream hit she was coming up to mid-thirties. Just one word for her: WOW.
Just glad the analysis picked up on a voice that was stunning for a 12 year old to listen to and for a 53 year old to revisit. Wonderful ability of CZcams to take anyone back to any time. Keep Blondie alive forever
Kicking major butt on the drum's
Gos I loved her! And still do. What a beauty. And that voice control...awesome!
'Dreaming is free'
Never a more simple yet powerful truthful lyric sung or wrote
As always, an excellent analysis. I was crazy about Blondie (and Debbie, of course). I now realise I'm old.
She's 74 now. How about that for feeling old? She was in her 30s during the heyday of the band.
The Tide is High and OneWay or Another my favorite Blondie songs. They were really popular in the 70s... fond memories, thanks for the review.
Hi Fil! Absolutely love Blondie! I have The Tide is High on my playlist....she has such an incredible voice! I also love her story...how she cared for a very ill boyfriend. To me that showed character! ✌️
After which he left her for someone else, if I remember the story correctly.
Blondie had a great a voice. I was 5 at that time but always listened to music. The good ol’ days!
Oh my, Debbie was so beautiful. Everyone had the hots for her, including me and I am a straight female! The combination of stage presence, vocal ability and great songs were unstoppable. She is still a beautiful woman today although I think heroin did do a number on her body. I am just thankful she survived and is still making music today. I loved this analysis. As I say all the time, I don't know nothin' about music but I know what I like. I think stage presence plays a huge part in the success or failure of a band/performer. I am sure that probably isn't news to anyone who knows music but since I am just a music lover, it wasn't clear to me how big a part that played until recently. I was watching some one hit wonders and realized that most of the time I loved the song but didn't really care to watch the performer.
Welcome to the club of straight females who had a crush on Debbie Harry. Standing room only 😁
My nickname is "Scrap"...lol...
Thanks for the analysis. I learned something about Punk Rock that I didn't realize. It was about attitude over melody. That might be why I've never been into it.
Fil your hair is from 1979!!! I love it!
She's more beautiful and more talented than I appreciated back in the day and, even back in the day, I thought she was both.
Pitch-perfect and such a beautiful voice.
LOVE Blondie! I first saw then in 76 or 77, or maybe both years (hey if you can remember the 70s you weren't there right?) Deborah Harry sure has the rockstar presence. I remember seeing them in 1999 - someone threw up a red rose. Harry picked it up, bit the head off it and spat it. Legend.
Great analysis of that song. Attitude and vocal technique, Debbie is a real singer.Good song, shining melody, flawless singing and Clem Burke. A drummer in the spotlight in a pop punk song. Why? Just because the drumming is so driving! Burke is on my top five of all time for drummers
Never was a big fan of Blondie, but it sure is fun to learn more about the music . As usual, I enjoyed your analysis and guitar demo.. thank you
Thank you, Fil, for your outstanding explaination of the difference between pop and punk vocals.
My favorite Blondie song love the drumming. Barely see any of the band members
I remember when I was still at school, there wasn’t a guy who didn’t have a crush on her! Yeah Fil I also remember watching Countdown with Molly Meldrum when he played...In the Flesh! Blondie was one of the best parts of my musical youth! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Mario Rabottini me too!! On all counts. 😍
Me too here in the States! My intro to Blondie was Saturday Night Live and my brother and I were Wowed!
Love it that you examine all types of music and groups/singers.
Blondie was a cool, fun group with a very attractive good singer. Wish they never broke up when they were still so popular.
I enjoyed this video. Fil playing guitar; an awesome live display of how Blondie helped make the 70's,80's,90's memorable with those great songs and performances.👍 TY Fil !! 🤟
Professor, you are so smart. I am continually amazed at the great extent of your knowledge and insights! Brilliant and fun lesson! Your vocal delivery is fantastic keeping interest with excellent information, great inflection and enthusiasm!
Yes, the incomparable Debbie Harry! I remember her very first appearance on British TV, an interview with the late, great Tony Wilson. She walked onto the set wearing black leather thigh boots and the tiniest mini skirt I'd ever seen! She was the coolest thing in creation and Tony Wilson, who until that moment had been a contender for the title, suddenly became a bumbling school boy - it was hillarious. I've always loved her unique voice, (especially her higher range though she has a very pleasant lower range, too). I couldn't put my finger on what was so unusual about her voice till you analysed it. Been listening to it for decades and couldn't see the obvious till it was pointed out - it's just a plain, unadorned voice, no vibrato, no huge 'big finish', no frills and as such it's like a breath of fresh air. Good to see Clem Burke getting the credit he deserves, he was a fantastic drummer. Without his energy their sound wouldn't have been the same but he was sometimes overlooked with the focus being on Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Nice analysis, thanks for all the work you put in on it.
First time I realised I was a musician at heart was when I saw this as a teenager. My eyes were on the gorgeous Debbie, of course, but my mind was on that fantastic drumming. Putting him up at the front rather than the usual spot at the back of the stage was a masterstroke of stage setting. And the way that Debbie's voice and the guitar just float above that bed of percussion is perfect.
Just seeing this now. Thank you so much for this! My favorite band of all time!
Back in the early 80's I had the hook up with a ticket agency. I put in a 20 dollar deposit on front row seats for Blondie in 1980 (a lot those days because you could get good concert seats for 10-12 bucks). In spring 83 the ticket agency begrudgingly refunded my deposit as Blondie was not touring.
I did catch Blondie summer of 79 at Disneyland, but it was only for a couple of songs as my mother wanted to do other things.
Anyway, Blondie would've been a great concert in the early 80's.
Thanks Phil-for a great stroll down memory lane.
Always underated as a performer and singer ..her beauty was never in question ..but nice to hear a person who knows voices saying so .thank u
Thank You for showing it on the guitar, Fil. You make it so clear, also for an amateur like I. It really adds a lot to the "trip".😁
The best drummer in the punk/new wave game, excellent and diverse songwriting, and the most beautiful singer of her time who could actually sing with the best of them. Great analysis, and another great video.
Had a crush on Deborah Harry, she one of the front person ever for a band. Clem Burke is rock of the band.
My favourite Blondie song. Clem's drumming absolutely makes it for me. Debbie's gliding and hey-hey attitude is the icing on the cake... Love It!!
God I love this song! I forgot how much I love Blondie ❤
There’s something very soothing and smooth about a vocal without vibrato.
Wow! I love this song and somehow it got lost over the years and avoided my playlist- correcting that right now. She’s effortless in her singing, the power of her voice is unmatched by any current female vocalist in pop and rock. I was around 11 when I first heard this band and I remember my brother had a poster of Debbie hanging in his room - I’d never saw a more gorgeous woman, I wanted to be a singer because of Janis, Grace Slick and Debbie.
I met Debbie Harry at Electric Lady Studios party for Gizmotron, got my Parallel Lines LP autographed
Cool!
Do you still have it?
great pick. really love your channel, certainly in the short list of the best out there. Entertaining, and a person can learn a lot from your analysis. Great how you smile watching these, that really stands out in a good way.
Debbie is one of the few vocalists who can yell while still sounding melodic. This song is one continuous drum solo.
At August 2019 show in LA at the Greek Theater, she played "From Russia With Love" with the infamous alteration of the presidential seal on the screen. Her voice was stellar!
Hah! I was just looking for a live Blondie to include in that "Favorite Songs" Facebook thing! Thank you...very interesting analysis! Loved the guitar demo, super catchy!

Ohhh Blondie ..a great collection of diverse style hit songs.plus pint size Deborah Harry.a beautiful doll.every guy's fantasy in those days.but as a drummer ,i could not forget the energy of their drummer.man soo good.
I was ten years old when ETTB was released. I remember seeing the video for Shayla on television (some nighttime music program) and was transfixed with goosebumps all over me. My first ever album purchase was ETTB. To this day, both Shayla and Union City Blue, which Blondie often segways between live (same key), still gives me goosebumps.
Sidenote; Not many people are aware that bassist Nigel Harrison recorded with Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger (The Doors) in '77 and '78. The band was called Nite City. Harrison was recruited by Blondie after they recorded Plastic Letters. Nite City recorded two albums with Harrison, Nite City and Golden Days Diamond Nights.
This is my favorite CZcams concert video. It was performed in Glasgow, Scotland. The energy of the performance is incredible. Clem Burke's drumming is fantastic.
Such a wonderful, individual voice! Saw them last about 8 years ago, they were still bloody brilliant! Had the whole place up dancing!
Thanks for the memories. I was an avid Countdown (Aussie show, not the British one) fan in my mid-teens, around 1979. The show went out live at 6.00 pm on Sunday nights and it is safe to say that not everyone was sober. There was some classic bad boy behaviour but alas a lot of the footage has been lost. I had absolutely no clue though at the time. A young Prince Charles appeared on it once and Molly Meldrum (the host and interviewer) almost couldn't speak, he was so in awe. Some credit Countdown with being a proto-MTV - each week it ended with a full clip of the number one song on the charts. Abba's Fernando was top song in Aust for something like a year - ugghh - but Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody clip had a long run too - yaay. And Blondie's Heart of Glass and Rapture - and disco!!!!
Fernando was No 1 on that show for 22 weeks in a row. When Molly, at about week 10, decided to give a break to the tradition of playing the No 1 song at the end of the week, he was inundated with complaints from Countdown viewers. Which meant he had to keep playing Fernando! And poor John Paul Young, who was guest presenting on the program, had to grit his teeth while his song was stuck at No 2!
Thanks for clarifying. That puts a whole new spin on "I Hate The Music". (I was going to say 56 weeks - well it felt like it.) I can picture that young JPY right now. What did Molly call him? Squizz?
I remember watching that too. And I couldn't believe Mull of Kintyre was Number 1 for soooo many weeks. I'm a huge Paul McCartney fan, but quite frankly, that song was as boring as batshit.
@@possumintheblossom Squeak, I think.
I've been listening to Blondie for decades. The soundtrack of my life now.🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤
Love Blondie. Reminds me of my senior trip to Lake Tahoe in 79
I remember watching this concert at the time, it was live in Glasgow and it aired live on the BBC over the New Year 79/80. Debbie was a great vocalist and Blondie were a fantastic band, I was a huge fan and still am.
My favorite song of theirs, Debbie is so amazing.
First time I even heard this song was a in live performance on Saturday Night Live, way back when. I was immediately mesmerized by the drumming, despite being ambivalent to drums as a result of being such a fan of the electric guitar. But this one did it for me, and I've never forgotten it. Liked Debbie, too, of course, and the rest of the band put out some very listenable tunes!
great video, thanks so much. As a big Blondie fan, these breakdown videos make me appreciate their talents on another level! Awesome!
DEBBIE HARRY ❤❤❤❤ my idol... Blondie great band for my; thanks for this analissys and your comment 🎼🎵♩👏👏👏🌷🌷🌷⚘⚘⚘🎹🎸🎸🌟⭐🌟⭐👌👌👊🤘
Even a few years ago she kicked ass. A great band. She sang great because she stayed within her range. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I always liked Blondie. Good review 👍 Fil 👍 Rock.
I was so blessed to be living in NY in the '70's and 80's.
I always like the energy on this song and I really like your explanation of Debbie's delivery and voice and punk rock and mainstream. It made total sense! Good job on this analysis. PS the drummer must have worked up a sweat on this song.
Ha I bought this on a 45 record back in summer of 1979. Blondie was huge back then. Good music, good times and memories 👍
Very nice review. Debbie used to play around the corner from our place. Both at The Bottom Line, and CBGB's. Back in the day, these were the grunge places that were holes in the wall. Places to hear those who had such individual sounds. Such as The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and dozens of others. Great stuff , Fil! Carry on!
Love Blondie! Debbie is a great singer. She has a beautiful voice.Great analysis. 🤘
Hey, Fil, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I have a special place in my heart for Blondie, especially "Rapture." I had never heard anything like it as a young teen. There was an FM rock station from Terre Haute, Indiana that played music that made me feel like I was connected to a larger world. Before the internet there was just no way for us small town/country kids to find out about bands unless we saw them on TV or heard them on the radio. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to explore new, and new-to-me, music on the internet. I'm very pleased when I'm introduced to a new artist/band on this channel. I missed so much wonderful music just by not having access to it. This channel is helping me make up for the deficits in my musical knowledge. Thank you!
Thank you Fil for another forgotten song and memory, I was in 8th grade at the time of this song's release. Great lesson too Ful I'm totally digging your show...Debbie is a great woman, she was inspired by Elton John 's philanthropy and fight against aids and took up her own mission in a fight against cancer!😀
