First Time Using a Paint Sprayer on Furniture | NO MORE BRUSH MARKS

- In this video I FINALLY try my hand at using a paint sprayer to paint a dresser! I absolutely love the way the sprayer allowed me to get such an amazing finish! I used the Wagner Flexio 4000 and their large spray shelter (everything is linked below). The prep work was heavy since I wanted to block the paint from getting everywhere but overall, the whole process seemed to go much faster than using a brush! I am not hanging up my brush but I am excited that I finally have a sprayer in my toolbelt so that I can use that from time to time! Especially with bigger projects! Thanks for watching!

I have watched some people who restore furniture before CZcams. One trick they would do is take the swivel out of a swivel rocker or recliner. And mount it either to their work table with a large board on top or you can even put it on the floor with two large boards screwing it together. The swivel out of those chairs can take 300 lb this way you can put a complete furniture on it and spin it around without having to walk around it.
What a great idea!!
Lazy Susan!
That is a " why haven't I thought of that?!!" Thank you for sharing that- I am now on the lookout for a swivel chair.😄
I was thinking of this lazy Susan for the paint tent to make it easier to spray the furniture.
Great idea! An office/desk chair would be a good option also. Because there are so many cheap or free chairs available.
As soon as I'm done with a coat, I wet a paper towel with my mister and wipe the paint off of the front of the nozzle. Keeps it nice and clean until I'm ready for the next coat. Nice job!
Ahh! Love the idea! Thank you! (: Thanks for watching!
So, you don’t need to clean out the gun between the first and second coats or between the final coat and topcoat? Also, is it ok to run some mineral spirits through to clean it out? Thanks for any info!
Mine says to just put it in a bucket of water until you do your next coat. (Just the tip). Seemed to work just fine. 😊
That was gorgeous wood...I will admit I was sad to see you paint this one but it turned out very pretty.
I suspect it was more valuable before the updates.
Agree. NEVER paint art deco furniture.
@@jwestfalldavis3574 furniture prices are at an all time low, and paint does come off!
I haven't even watched yet and I was thinking the same thing...Don't paint that beauty! Not crazy about leaving the one drawer.
Are you going to give updates on how much you have saved for a down payment like you did your student loan debt ? I think that was very intriguing to us subscribers . Tfs 🦋❤️
Great job with the sprayer. The one thing I do is when I empty out the paint from the container, I pour in the topcoat in the container. So I don’t clean the paint out. The when the topcoat is in I just mix that up and it’s ready to go. Your just using the paint that’s already in the container.
How do you remove the paint without destroying the original finish? I’m trying to do that. The strippers I’ve used remove finish as well as paint. Any suggestions?
I have never used a sprayer before, but I was thinking this same thing!
@@BC-ux9iw I used a stripper on my first piece, I’m a rookie so I’m still working on it. I thought strippers were supposed to go down to bare wood? I didn’t like the stripping process. I used Citristrip, talk about a mess! I was supposed to repeat the process, possibly twice, NOPE, not this old lady. I sanded then went ahead and stained the top even though it wasn’t perfectly down to bare wood. I really like the way it came out. What do you mean by “original finish”?
That sounds like a great way to not waste. Maybe the instructions said to clean it and for Lauren’s first time using it, she went exactly by the instructions. I bet she’ll do that when she gets more comfortable.
Thats a great idea. Never thought of that !
I'm only a few minutes into the video and I love your work. You produce gorgeous pieces. My heart is breaking thinking about all the beautiful wood that gets painted over these days. I understand that people want painted furniture more than they want a refinished piece, so it is more cost effective to paint and it adds more value. It just hurts me a little bit. 😳
I agree. Original art deco pieces are getting rare. Painting them over is not the best idea.
Whoever came up with the idea of pretaped plastic is a genius. I have seen on other flipper channels that after the first spray, to overlap the next spray 50%.
Get a crock pot and put the hardware in with water a dawn and your hardware will be clean at the end of the day. Just get an old one from the thrift store. It works so well!!
What a brilliant idea to use a crock pot to clean knobs and pulls!
I'm definitely not a wood purist by any stretch but that was the kind of wood that it pains me to see covered by paint and I'm someone often loves a paint job on furniture. It's still nice, though!
I got mine for Mother’s Day and it’s still in the box because I’m afraid to use it. Your video encouraged me to get-to-getting with it and Just Do It! Thanks!!!
Yes! Go for it (: You got this! Thanks for watching!
I have a paint sprayer but my first piece is small and also the sprayer isn’t top of the line. I used it once on outside furniture so I’ll have to learn more about it.
Girl, I am so excited for you and proud of your hard work. I’m sure you are a phenomenal teacher and your kids will miss you dearly. But as someone who taught before, you and I know how exhausting and thankless that job is. Way to go, beautiful!
Yes, I will also miss them (: I am excited to being this journey though(: Thanks for watching!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher the best part is, you can always go back to teaching school, if needed.
I think Mary from the white cottage company uses that sprayer, she makes it look so simple.
P.s wrap the nozel part in cling wrap or get a large plastic food bag/carrier bag and just wrap it over it to stop the paint drying.
I´ve seen other videos where they do exactly that
Ahh! Great idea! Just like brushes! Thanks for watching!
You are so talented! This is fantastic!
New item you need: a double sided drill bit with flat head on one side and Phillips on the other side! You’ll always have it on hand when you need to take the hardware out!
To solve the nozzle clogging or drying between coats, I would use a double layer of plastic wrap secured by a rubber band over the nozzle.
I know you put in a lot of work in these furniture flips, and I enjoy watching your channel. However, would you consider sometimes restoring the more special finds, rather than painting or upcycling?. This dresser has very strong modernist, art deco lines. Restoring the veneer, applying new French polish, or if not possible, a clear varnish, would likely result in a more timeless, valuable piece that could be sold for even more. I do like the painted furniture youdo when the furniture is ordinary. But this one, my heart broke.
In my area, no matter how neat the piece of furniture it wouldn't sell for half of what a "farmhouse rustic" painted one would. The painted and distressed variant would sell in hours, and the restored piece would sit for days/weeks. It depends on the market if sales are the priority.
@@Moutanman This dresser is not a "farmhouse rustic" piece. This is art deco with typical veneer patterns. Connoisseurs pay serious money for a piece like this with the original finish. I know I would.
@@1959Berre right. It wasn't farmhouse until she painted it distressed. And just because you and collectors would pay top dollar for original, doesn't mean that you aren't vastly outnumbered by the people who want it in painted condition for their house.
You have to sell to your market, which was the point of my comment.
I was thinking the same. It is a beautiful piece of furniture, my heart broke too.
I agree 100%! I I'm heartbroken that you covered that beautiful wood design on this art deco piece. Those are hard to find in that good of a condition, and yes, you did a nice job, but you painted over an exquisite piece of art.
LOVE that you give touch up paint with the piece! So considerate, and if I were the buyer I know I would really appreciate it.. 👌GREAT JOB AS ALWAYS!!!
Thanks! I got the idea from other artists! Definitely a wonderful touch! (: Thanks for watching!
You're great to Hamas!!
I subscribed because of the name of your channel. I’m a rookie myself so I’ll be checking out your channel today.
Yes. It was actually suggested by one of her subscribers in her early videos. So she started giving the touch up paint.
Did she list the link for the touch up paint containers? I'm trying to find it but maybe I'm missing it
You are truly a teacher. Your videos are fun, and informative, and have all the details that others need. Thank you!
If you do get another base or a few more, you could have one with water in it to “flush” the sprayer in between coats. Wipe the front and wait to switch back
I just saw a way to not have a mess of paint on the top when pouring paint. Put two pieces of tape into a V on the top of the can and then pour. Frog tape or duct tape. Whatever you have.
I got this sprayer awhile back and I gotta say, it took me a few times using it to really get the hang of it and how the adjustments work for the type of paint and project. I finally feel confident using it and I absolutely love the finish I get and how much faster I get my projects painted. It’s also a game changer for top coats.
Totally agree! It does take some getting used to but I know it will love it! And YES! The top coat looks absolutely amazing! Thanks for watching!
Hey Lauren ...so my birthday is coming up and between my youngest 2 sons and grandkids and My husband they all pitched in and bought me a surfprep sander ...I'm so excited....it's being shipped today as we speak. ..this is gonna help me out so much with the nerve damage etc I deal with. .thank you for all ur help ...I appreciate your kindness. ..🤩👍🎉🎉😊❣️❣️
I haven"t had the nerve to open my sprayer I bought off QVC. You just gave me the guts to open the box. I love your videos! You are so fun to watch. I love that you teach us prices to charge and how to stage things. I guess that's why you're a teacher.💚🧡❤💞
I have this sprayer and in the instruction manual there is a list to tell what settings to use based on what type of paint you are spraying. They also show you how to clean it out. You should add water to the canister and spray it as you would paint until it runs clear. That way you know the inner pieces are clean too
The video I’ve been waiting for - the one where you use the sprayer for the first time. You always make things look so easy. Great job. But the prep work and clean up. 😩 However the dresser turned out amazing. Another one that you hit out of the park.
Tip: you need a respirator instead of a mask because the paint particles are small enough to go through your mask.
And goggles
To each their own. Nice job. I do prefer the Transcend Furniture approach of preserving much or all of the wood on many projects, especially on antiques.
I did what I could for this chest! Thanks for watching!
Antique doesn't mean it has pretty wood worth refinishing. Laminate 1920's furniture is often not nice wood after stripping.
@@laurieg673 It wasn't laminate.
@@willtheman840 I meant veneer..just as cheap.
@@laurieg673 Sometimes. Laminate is almost always synthetic. Veneer is real wood of varying thickness. It has often been used on fine furniture. I would always paint laminate if it was worn. I would scrape off damaged veneer, and maybe paint or maybe not. Fun to discuss things. Cheers.
This piece turned out beautiful. I really like blue color on it but did you think of maybe restoring it instead of painting it?
I am sad to see such beautiful wood painted over but it is super time consuming to refinish. For a quick profit she probably did the right thing.
@@lynnlamastres3424 and wood furniture doesn't flip as well. Most people don't like a mismosh of different wood tones and prefer neutral colored furniture that will compliment wood floors.
This piece has wood veneer, which ISN’T very attractive. Left unpainted and revarnished, it will appeal to fewer people. Updating it, especially with a current color, greatly increases its value.
@@randomvagaries5140 it depends upon each person's taste. I love a beautiful wood veneer and I believe the piece Lauren worked on would be gorgeous if refinished properly. But that would be an impractical approach if you wanted to make a profit. I would never fault someone for painting rather than refinishing a veneered piece.
We had a Bakelite radio in the 50’s, my mother used Vasoline (white petroleum jelly) to restore the shine and darken the colour other wise it would look dull
Bakelite is collectible, I think. I know it’s pretty stuff tho. Do you still have it?
It can also help if you label each drawer as you remove, or swap them around, then number, for the best fit. Especially with vintage, handcrafted items, there can be small differences between each one.
Ahhh! I needed to watch this video! I have a Flexio that has been sitting in my garage for several months waiting for me to build up the courage to use it. Watching you use a sprayer for the first time is just what I needed. Great job!
Fantastic job spraying your first piece! Welcome to the club! Lol. Also Timeless is my go to navy. Love it! To make the process quicker spray with the drawers in the dresser and just tape them to keep over spray out. I showed this process and how to spray drawers inside a dresser in my CZcams video with the purple French Prov dressser a couple weeks ago. Definitely check it out to help save you some time!
I love watching you channel you are so talented this piece again beautiful
I too am new to spray painting and we used in a lower ceiling area a large over large dropcloth and an easy up tent and took the top off. It has zip sides and it has adjustable heights. This is worked very well.
Get two more cups ., have one with water do you can flush out your sprayer in between product or colour changes 😊👍🏽
Get into the habit of wiping the tip of the nozzle as you go.
Lovely - really good to see how much love work and care goes into each piece you bring to life! ❤️
The recycling bin in the background has elementary school written all over it!! Thank you for your videos so inspiring ✨
Amazing as always. I bought myself a sprayer pretty early in the game. I still have to use a brush for some projects but I will never look back to brush only. Lol I love my sprayer so much.
Impressed with you reading the instruction book and sprayer demonstration, not everyone reads the book first. Great Job!
It makes sense for you to use a sprayer since this is now you're full time job. It will make it so much faster. I've been watching you from the beginning. I have painted a lot of the furniture in my house and love the process. I love your channel because you don't use a sprayer and I can do what you do. As a recent widow, I have started to flip on a small scale and can't afford a sprayer.
I love your work, how you explain everything and you personality. You make me feel like I can accomplish anything! Thanks for your inspiration. ❤️
Such fun seeing you use the sprayer but I was pulling for the engagement ring. . .
Thanks for sharing so much of yourself. It is very beautiful and inspiring.
I am so excited to see you show us the sprayer!! I have one but haven’t used it yet! Thank you for inspiring us! ☺️🙌🏼❤️
It's so good! you should definitely try yours soon! (: Thanks for watching!
That wood is beautiful. First time I got sad you are painting it. It’s a 1920’s Art Deco piece.
Most of the art deco furniture is veneer with a finish that looks like beautiful wood or to give it the appearance of ingrained furniture. Most of it is not worth stripping back only to find you stripped off a stained on wood look.
Painted furniture is much more versatile in most homes whereas clashing wood tones in homes are undesirable.
Maybe you can find a used camping tent on FB Marketplace you can adapt for a spray tent?
Yeah, you, for trying the sprayer!
great tips.
Great idea
Ahh! Great idea but we ended up going big and investing in a big canopy to double as a spray booth and a sun diffuser (: Thanks for watching, Dorothy!!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher, excellent. The shade will be good for the furniture, but also for you!
@@dorothyyoung8231 true on keeping furniture in the shade to dry. Drying in the sun speeds up dry time but doesn't allow for proper curing of the paint.
Thank you Lauren for sharing this video. I truly enjoyed watching you use a sprayer for the first time and all the comments you gave. I have not used one yet either and appreciate your explaining of everything.
smart lady. thanks for your passion and love for the work in front of you.
I’m so happy I found your channel. I love seeing your work and you’re a huge inspiration to me.
Yay so happy for you. I knew you would love it. The tent is gonna be so helpful as well. It turned out NICE!!! Way to go.
Thank you so much for the detailed instructions on the sprayer.
Yes girl you got a sprayer! I cant wait to see the magic you create..yaaay!
For drips press the so air only exiting the head and spray the drip. It will spread out the drip
Thanks for showing us this Lauren
Excellent! Very well done and glad to see you've a good start with sprayer!
Your dresser was build in the 1940’s my brother had this dresser in his room and he was born in 1946. I was born in 1948. The dresser belonged to my parents
How cool.
That piece is one of my favorite!!!
Ha ha, when I first saw that top drawer I said she needs to keep that one wood as finished, never thinking you would, but you saw what I saw, good eye. 👌
Awesome job! I now so want to try spraying! Watching someone do it for their first time is giving me the courage to try! Thank you Lauren for sharing your journey!
Definitely give it a shot! Not as daunting as it seems! Thanks for watching!
It looks so good! Great job.
Great tutorial on the spray gun and thanks for sharing ❣ love how the piece turned out too.
Love how this turned out...
Hey Lauren, great job using your new sprayer, you made it look very easy. I love your vision to leave the first drawer as a window to the past. The paint color enhanced the original look. Love it.🌷
I just scored a dresser just like that. I had to come back through and watch this again to see how you did it. Your so right about the paint on drawers messing with them closing.
Can we see a before and after of the water? Then maybe a dump of how nasty the water is? I love seeing that haha
Haha! We try in almost all our videos! Sorry we missed this one (: Thanks for watching!
That’s so funny that I was thinking the same thing!
I love this piece, keeping the top drawer natural was the right idea!
Loved watching you experiment with the sprayer, and a different design look on the piece. Great call with the top drawer accent. Beautiful end result.Go you!!
You are a great teacher!
I’ve noticed that there’s not a lot of people making vanity sets. Putting together three or four items for a little girls room.I’ve even done school lockers with themes. So small table, small chair, mirror and side table or even a shelving system for toys. The sets always sold really well for me!
I would love to see you try one if you want examples let me know I’ll send you some photos
Great job! Enjoy the sprayer! Makes life easier! ❤️
Well done - looks like it turned out great.
Try putting quart zip locks in your sprayer gun container to hold paint. Saves paint and time to clean up.
I just started using a sprayer and I love it. Especially for chairs!!!
Wow I have learnt so much from your video today. Thank you the colour is beautiful. Chest of drawers is amazing 👏
Great video; I love spraying. But those white wicker/cane barrel chairs - can't wait for that video!
Love that piece! I think you made a good choice of leaving the wood finish on top. Definitely a statement.
I just bought the Wagner double duty spray gun. I've been a bit reluctant to use it. But after watching you - I feel more confident to give it a try. Thanks Lauren - I always get inspiration from you videos.
I’m amazed at all the snark. I loved it and learned so much. Haters🤮🤮
Keep everything in order all the time, that way things will go faster and you will be able to find everything .
Don’t leave at end of day until it’s all put back, then you can begin each day easier.
Well done, Lauren !
Thank you, Phil!
I miss your videos,,,glad you’re doing more,,yayyyyyyyyyyy
You are awesome! Great work ethic!
I just bought a Flexio 4000 and I’m renovating my grandmothers house. 🙌🤗 I’m excited to see how much time I save painting every room!
awww progression...its awesome...
I love your videos! You’re the reason I started flipping furniture. I use a paint sprayer too and I hate those little filter things so I use a kitchen sink mesh strainer and it’s amazing and sits perfectly on top.
Great investment. Even better the dresser/bureau is exactly like a set I inherited. Glad to hear your opinion on the spray gun. My grandparents bought their bedroom set around 1918 when they built the current house I live in. Definitely antique. Looking great.
Hi Lauren, I am so excited for you getting a paint sprayer. I love mine. I bought it to paint a friend's kitchen cabinets. It cut my time tremendously! And I love the smooth finish. I would put painters tape over the nozzle if I had to step away from my project. Or sometimes just a damp paint rag. The "tape and drape" is also a Godsend! Thanks for always inspiring me!
Hi Lauren. Such a great Job 👍👏
Good on ya for trying out the Spray gun ! Great job 😜
❤️ the colour and the original Handles
You did awesome.. love the piece.
Thanks, Phyllis!
I love the color you chose. I've been looking for that color for a long time, and now I can go buy it. I watched your video a short while ago and now I'm watching Flip It Furniture. She's talking about safety first while talking to beginners about how to do a furniture flip. I've wondered if you should wear eye glasses. She said she's actually gotten eye infections from what she sands off her old pieces. Even if she didn't feel anything go in her eye. You said you'd get a better filtered mask, and I agree. I think you should also get protective glasses as well. Since you've chosen to do this for a living and not a hobby, I think it's important you protect yourself from the chemicals going into your eyes or your lungs. Hope you hear this as helpful, that was my intension.
Just thumbs up. You need to check the value of the plastic drawer pulls on quality furniture built from about 1920 to about 1959. The ones you have here looked like Bakelite to me. They were called Bakelite and were a sort of predecessor of our modern-day plastic. They're considered valuable and very desirable. They don't make them anymore. To paint them would be to destroy furniture history. They're antiques. I think it would be better to replace them and sell the Bakelite ones on Etsy or eBay to someone who would care for them. Some start at 130 dollars.
Do you know what I could do to restore Bakelite handles that have been spray painted a nasty gold? I’m trying to fix up a 1930’s to 40’s waterfall dresser and old, or even new reproduction handles are too expensive for me!
Gorgeous!
Talk about perfect timing. I was just trying to decide on a sprayer and you helped make my decision. I must say, I love the fact that you protected the inside of the furniture from over spray with the plastic. It looks much nicer and more professional! Thanks for sharing.
We debated between the flexio by wagner and the earlex 5500 (we learned is also wagner). We previously had a commercial wagner hvlp, and the deciding factor for us is the earlex is all metal parts with interchangeable spray needles. Same price range for either. Amazon offers 5 easy payments, like QVC.

Great piece 👏
Looks aaaamazing.
I only discovered you a few weeks ago, but I wondered about your not using a sprayer, as well.😂 I really like the Wagner tools that attach to the can or their reservoir...much easier to use, especially for bigger jobs. It can also waste paint in the tubing, but they're a dream to use. If you're painting walls, the roller is SO amazing... you'll never go back!
It looks great 👍
Beautiful!
Congratulations! You have taken on the sprayer and made it look so easy. Beautiful finish on a lovely piece for someone's home. Can't wait to see what you tackle next. I love the spray tent, too. I bet you decorate it very soon with a little of your own humor!
It was waaaay easier than I thought it would be! I'm sure the tent will get it's use for sure! Thanks for watching!
Great job! So when you give your customer a little bit of the paint for touchups, do you give them the top coat with paint or just the paint? Are they usuallly the same sheen? Just curious! :)
Love this project. You have amazing ideas. Thanks for the tutorial. So so helpful. I’m so bad with brushes.
You really are making me want to flip furniture! Loved the draw and the whole piece turned out beautifully!!
Do it, girl! It's so fun and definitely addicting! (: Thanks for watching!
