- Is the Official Raspberry Pi 7 inch Touch screen worth buying in 2020 for the Raspberry Pi 4?
Let's Find out. In this video, we take a look and test out the Official Raspberry Pi 7” DSI touchscreen paired with the Raspberry Pi 4 It works with no drivers in Raspbian and RetroPie and has a resolution of 800x480 but is it worth buying?

Hey man, love your vids, can’t get enough of em. Always looking forward to your next upload! I have a question for you. Do you ever sit down to enjoy your games, or are you more interested in just finding out what can run what? This isn’t a criticism whatsoever. I’ve found myself more amused in finding new ways to play my old games rather than playing them myself. Example: recently running Loz: oracle of Ages, on a gba emulator, from my Mac, with a switch joycon, on a WiFi projector, blasted about 9’ across my wall. I found more pleasure in my setup than actually replaying my game. Is this something you often contend with?
Excellent review and guide. Thank you for being so thorough. Subscribed.
Thanks for this video. Clearly explained and helpful.
Thanks. Very helpful AND necessary considering the CanaKit documentation was minimal and completely ignored any detailed assembly instructions. Instead, they simply refer you to online references. I'm glad I found your video because despite a considerable experience with PCs, this specific hardware assembly stumped me.
Omg tysm for this I needed this cause I have the raspberry pi 4 and I couldn't find like a back case for my 7 inch touch screen and I saw that its 20$ so I got it thanks for the vid it was really helpful too, my dream is to become a computer science person or own a technology business and this tutorial is helping my dream actually come true :D
Great review. _And_ you played My favorite game for the Dreamcast.

Can you do a review of best RPi screens & cases for automotive applications? Thx!! Love the channel!
This will make a great screen/hub for the raspberry pi based security camera system I plan on setting up
Great review as always.
Great recording quality. Great speed of the presentation.
Excellent tutorial, many thanks.
Outstanding video!! I am über new to Raspberry Pi and am wondering if there is enough room for a fan and if so where would it be draw its power since the GPIO pins I would normally use are being used by the screen?
Screens are a pain in the ass to find at a good price
You can find some 5" HDMI touch screens on AliExpress for around 23 (and cases for 7) which are probably worth a gamble, but there are só many variations it's impossible to find the reviews and gaming demo's that show any potential screen tearing.
Edit: I think it's just for the Pi 2 and 3. the Pi is also mounted the other way around, so there's no room for hats and less room for cooling solutions. A heatsink should fit just fine, but airflow is probably quite restricted. On the other hand, no Ribbon cables or jumper wires as the screen is connected like a Pi Hat with a female header.
Yeah. End up spending like 200 bucks for a full on monitor just to use the pi.
Great video! I gonna save to buy one soon
Thanks a ton! 🎉
Very good presentation and thorough testing of all specs. Is there any software for this display that has automotive gauges that is recommended?
Thanks for sharing !
Wow this is the only tutorial that showed the proper orientation of the dci ribbon cable
Thank you for a simple how to. It would be nice if instructions were included!
Thanks, used this for my klipperscreen install
you're a lifesaver. canakit instructions show the ribbon cable upside down (blue side up). Took me hours until i saw your video doing it opposite of all the instructions i saw online!
This is the most elegant solution i've seen so far. trouble is that screen is very expensive
Where could i connect the fan pins after i put the lcd pins?
The screen looks like the same one found in the kindle fire 7 from 2014
Now we just need some shells that hold a battery and allow for a controller to be a part of the case. We'll be good to go.
Also seems good for a Grafana setup.
Video about DAC and Volumio with this setup would be great.
Thanks for making this video! I had my eye on it for a while. What would be the best 7 inch touchscreen for the Rpi4 on your opinion?
The official one
I like the speech 💬 of the ending part 👌 ✌
Thanks for the great review. I am all new to this. What would you say is your top 7 inch green to pair with a raspberry pi?
If you have a 3d printer and wire up some basic controller inputs, this could be the basis for a nice little gaming tablet. Plenty of room to put a couple of 5000mah LiPo batteries and an NVME drive inside, if you don't mind the tab being on the THIC side.
I got the same screen for a small surveillance camera setup. I found the screen quite bright too, so I changed the brightness from 255 down to 80, that made everything look a lot better to me. The case I use is the SmartiPi Touch 2, this both comes with a fan for the pi, and also ability to change angle or even mount on a wall.
Can you please tell me what camera you are using ? And how you set it up ?
How do you install the fan with this touch screen? I’ve been searching for a while now n couldnt find any answers.
I really want this screen and a case that holds it with active cooling. I then will connect it up to a keyboard and mouse with a battery pack and I now have a portable Minecraft and emulation gaming station
Sorry I'm a newbie to this but I wanted to ask you what you've used as sound output in this build. did you connect something with the headphone jack or are there built in speakers?
the best screen tearing test is the intro to Woodward TV
This screen looks much better than the last one you showed us.
This screen has been out for years. It works well but the main drawback is the low 800x480 resolution. It's a pain if you're doing actual work and not just using it for an emulator. I wish they would release an updated version with 1920x1080 or something. Also as others have said the SmartiPi case is better if not the best.
While trolling around looking for old posts to revive I found your little nugget above. I don't know when but they did release a higher resolution waveshare with a 911 driver. It claims 1024x800 for only ~70ish USD but I'm running it on a 3b (not even a +) at FHD... And
Ye
What a F...ing Gooood microphone have you using to record this video....???!!!! I can hear sounds far away become from inside my room, steps, back left, game music from front right.... but they are not from my room, but from your room!!!!! I had remoove my headphones two times to ceck
I own two of these displays. I agree that the colors are flat and the bezel is large. But they work great for all sorts of projects and there are 3D files for them on thingiverse.
Are the 3d files for a cabinet type of thing?
do you have any experience in getting the resolution set different when using this screen ? mine seemed to be locked at 800x480 even if i change boot config file :(
How did you run retropie on there?
When I did your retropie in raspbien tutorial from a couple months ago it didn't work
My screen was DOA. I'll be back in a few days!
I recommend using the SmartiPi Touch case. I currently use the SmartiPi Touch as a carputer.
+1 I use it as a marine chart plotter.
What screen are you using, thinking about making a "carputer" but i think those bezels looks horrible
@@StaticLowLife The SmartiPi Touch case was designed to use the official 7" touch screen, so I guess you'd have to take the large bezels for granted. Personally I wouldn't choose the SmartiPi case for a carputer unless you would want to mount it on top of a very large fascia.
@@RoaldKoger thats why i basically wanted an advice on what screen to use 🙂
I'm not waiting to save $5 for this to go on sale. I'm picking one up for $60 at my local Micro Center.
Just picked one up today for $55.
Hey I'm trying to make a trail cam viewer for some wild life trails cams I got and was wondering if you could do a video on making something like that? I've made a retropi console using your videos and loved that series but never hooked a screen up to a pi to use as a HD card viewer
Hello. What kind of microphone are you using during this video? It makes great 3d effect for background actions (like keyboard clicking or game sounds).
howdy, at 6:28 you stated that "it is not the best 7" screen I have seen" . . .can you please tell me what is the best screen you have seen . . .did you do a review of that unit ? thanks much
John
I would like to know this as well
You do have a point!! Lol..
We’re still waiting
still waiting
still waiting
My BB playbook with mini hdmi port once again to the rescue. First time pi4 user.
Subscribed. I am new to this. Does work with Noob? I think thats what it's called
I could see this being used for a mini arcade cabinet.
Glad I ran across this video to find out how to rotate the screen, Now then, I have an old i-pad that cannot update past i9OS. How can I use the screen with a raspberry Pi 4 8GB ? Oh yea, I boot my 7 incher (like in your video) from an SSD via USB,
If you put this screen into a smarti-pi case, you don’t need to rotate and the SD is more accessible 🙂
Or if you want even easier access to the SD card get a PiBow case. It's also quite cheap and looks nice. Power cable does go in the top if you use the PiBow case, I prefer it coming in from the bottom.
I have the same screen and case in the 3b+ version that i made a picture viewer out of for my wife and have no complaints except that like this version you cant access the micro sd card.
You can’t clickbait me with the word THICC, I know your tricks
Gambit 21 oh he can Thiccbait me all he wants, daddy needs new ways to play the same games over and over!
You are disgusting
@@gambit6186 if he cant thiccbait you here... why are you here
i like the case. if they could make this case smaller to accommodate a smaller screen, with a d-pad and buttons, with some ergonomics, i'd really dig it. i can picture what i mean, just cant explain it at the moment.
Mark Valdez so, if they make case completely different you'd like it? Lol
I appreciated the video, but I went with a 3 for this. Putting a 4 in it seemed less than ideal with no cooling solution on the case. I'm using it as a hardware monitor though so it really didn't need much power.
Man. How did you used it as hardware monitor??? What's the setting? Can you illustrate it please?
Ah i just asked if you could add a fan and apparently not. Guess its time to break out the dremel
@@randallracer If there's a will, there's a way
@@thebat735 yeah i worked on it some last night. Got the holes drilled but theyre not perfectly aligned. All you need is 2 right? Now i gtta make the fan hole bigger and remove tht leaf shaped grill
I had to use this display because it was legitimately the only one I could find that used dsi without taking up the entire gpio.
Going to get one for my car.
thanks been looking for one that dos not use a deiver
Thank you for the walkthrough. Could you tell if we can use both this display, and another display with HDMI?
that's the question !
Great video. I have a display for RPi4 but wanted to add a speaker to it. Is there a way to do this?
hey i tried to rotate the screen using lcd_rotate but it's not rotating can someone help me out
I really like this screen in my smartipi case
Me too
can we use a camera and 7-inch screen at the same time with android os?
is android os has orientation error and is it also easy to fix in android os too?
Thanks for considering my question.
NICE VIDEO - thanks !
QUESTION: WHY did you have to also connect the I2C (SDA, SCL) pins as well? I don't understand that - is it to enable the TOUCHSCREEN??
Please explain WHY you connected to the I2C interface on the RPi4 !...
-Mark in North Aurora IL USA
I'd like to know this as well!
You only have to do it on the original Pi (A or B non-plus). The Pi A+, B+, 2, 3, 4 all have I2C routed on the DSI header.
Should have explained the bit about opening the clamp for attaching the ribbon cable. i was stuck for a min wondering htf to do that. then i broke down and googled it. like a savage.
Actually, you were more "like a filthy animal"
Are there any colour, brightness, contrast controls?
You don't need to connect the SCL and SDA pins unless you're on a Pi 1. Pi 2 - 4 have have the I2C connections integrated into the DSI port.
So, no need for gpio jumpers? The back cover doesn't allow for them, so hope so.
@@jgefaell you still need to connect the 5V and GND pins, even when you supply the touchscreen and Pi with power seperately.
@@hanneswinkler6686 It appears there is no need for these pins. I have none attached and things are all working just fine. I believe however that attaching those pins will allow both the Pi and display to be powered by the single power connector on the Pi. Not having these connected requires the use of a Y (or two discrete) power cables.
I plan to get a POE HAT and would be pleased if both the Pi and display would run with the single POE connection.
@@jgefaell This is what I meant. if you use two discrete power cables, coming from diffetent power supplies, you NEED to connect the 5V and GND pins. (I'm not 100% sure whether the 5V is necessary, but GND I'm certain) Otherwise it's possible you get different ground-levels on pi and touchscreen and that can do damage
just purchased both waiting game now lol
Man i want a PI :D.they not that expensive but it's hard as i will have little time to play retro games on her.I may if time allows build my ryzen system into a emu gaming with playnite.I like launch box but out of personal experience playnite are easier to setup and faster to setup.
So are you going to put shoulder buttons right in the case? That would be slick if this is going where I think this is going.
I've been doing some search, im going to buy RASP 4, to install Android Auto, for the car, will prefer borderless screen what can you recomend for screen, to use this official raps4 screen or use something else for full compatibility. Any advice would be nice.
im doing the same
Have you bought a screen ? Can you please tell me what you chose ?
Have u guys done it? How? Can we revive this thread. im asking for recomendations too.
Nice 👍
Can you make into longer I like the intro
What screen would you recommend for an ASUS Tinkerboard S?
Does this screen comes with speakers? Or you connected external BT for the video?
What about ditching the screen and getting a Micro Projector that should mount into the one case and project onto the wall and use a remote control board to control the unit.
Hey, do you know if this case supports a fan? I picked one up when I ordered the pi and it doesn't seem to fit anywhere...
here in perú the screens of 5',7'' cost like 500/650 soles and with that i can buy a desktop intel core i5/i7 of 4gen with all the wired and stuff without monitor... and if i wanna buy from amazon or other online stores the shipping cost like 80 soles, of course i can afford the money but it feels that is too much for a single product...
Any idea how long I could extend those connections between the screen and the Pi? I wanna see about installing this in my truck but keep the screen near the dash and the pi inside the console between the two front seats
Would you mind checking out this "xtra pc" usb operating system? Im curious for a full review
Don’t buy it, you can easily make your own
very good
What is providing the sound output?
can you do an updated video using the raspberry pi 4 as a steam link preferably raspbian
Gostei muito deste
Any update for 2022? I connected raspberry pi 4 to that LCD, screen was upside down (obviously), tried the lcd_rotate thing - but unfortunately that didn't worked. I read on forums that there are many people that report same problems, that in never raspbian it doesn't work anymore (they tried older images and tada! works). So any solution for that?
Does the Ice Tower (original) fit in this (without back panel of course)? If no, does the new low-profile one work? Thanks in advance.
I have one. Hate all the extra bezel no complaints other than that
They look great mounted in a wall next to your door, though.
Please do emulation test for Umidigi Power 3.
I was never able to play 4k youtube video this smoothly, could you please let me know the sd card and power adapter details.
G'day! Quick question! Can one use this display with a smartphone over usb c instead of a raspberry pi
My problem with all the RasPi screens is their low resolution. My aging eyes struggle with the dot pitch in low resolution screens, and the resulting blurry text. A good, reasonable resolution I haven't found yet (except that one 5.5" that has screen tearing and costs an arm and a leg). Does anybody know of any reasonable screens? I'm mainly interested in it as a writing machine.
i saw a extender cable for the sdcard (adafruit?), might help ...
i use a silent cooler from garatronic.fr, might not fit the case and dsi connection cable
Is it possible to use the screen with a vertically screen?
nice screen prob the best one for the pi 4 but the res is a bit low wish someone would make a dsi one with 720p i know full hd would have scaling issues on i screen this small. is there a way to still use the hdmi with the screen installed?
How would 1 power a fan through the gpio pins with the connectors you have? Should i just use a usb splitter? I think my stand came with one. But if i can power both the screen and fan via gpio thatd be pretty cool
the intro is very good but please change the music
Amazing gadget but my only concern is the lack of fans to cool the system.
Does anyone know if the Pi is prone to overheating?
I've never seen it get too hot or use more than one gig of ram
I wanted to install this in my car as a radio head unit up on the dash but i worry abt it overheating
The fan and heatsink is cheap so people usually buy them as well... if they need the cooling and don't buy them... then they don't know what they are doing lol
OK very intersant your video. The speaker is externally connect?
Screen has no speaker so yes
I just picked up this screen for octoprint for my RP3b+. What exactly is the SDA and the SCL do? Those two extra wires aren't mentioned in any tutorial that I am watching but this one.
I want one of these in my car. There has to be a way to hook this into a aftermarket harness. usb should allow for wifi hotspot. I could game but I would really like the access to better maps and above all CZcams!
Its cheaper and easier to use cheap or old tablet.
@@Vratikusz anybody can do "easy" but what I cant do with a tablet is mount it directly to my cars audio harness. i dont want to run aux cables and inverters and crap across my car. Id also like the extra usb slots.
