You just made me nostalgic for my modded Squeezebox Touch. Great little gadget and my first proper streamer.
Gone up in the world now with an Aries G2 feeding a Terminator Plus but, as they say, you never forget your first, especially the excitement of having all the music all the time at the touch of a screen.
Sweet. I now have added this to my setup. Also added a Flirc receiver and now can control next/previous from the system remote. Awesome!
A big fan of the versatility of Raspberry Pi, I have one powering my home entertainment system using Plex and another one powering my smart home using Home Assistant. Thanks to you, I will now using one to compliment my audio streaming too!
Really enjoyed this set up . Love to see John work like a technician. Cheers . Let the screen be there John .
I built something similar and used a HiFiberry hat with this case. I did have to modify the case slightly to allow the coax out to fit the case. Iâm also using a usb splitter with one power supply for the screen and the RPi. Itâs a pretty cool setup.
Thank you for taking the time to put this information together...it really is helpful to people who aren't that tech savvy.. much appreciated đ.
You rock, John Darko! I love, love, love (đ„đ„đ„) the way you pingpong between the megabucks high end gear and the down and dirty low end DIY thing!
Additional Tips:
1. Use the Flirc USB receiver to be able to control play/pause, next/prev track using an IR remote. This needs to be configured in the Ropiee configuration page. This is pretty awesome as you don't have to unlike your phone/tablet every time you just want pause the music or skip tracks.
2. Use right angled adapters for cleaner cable routing, I use two USB-C adapters for power, one USB-A adapter for the DAC connection, another for the Flirc remote receiver connection and finally a ethernet adapter. You might also be able to find cables with right angled adapters.
3. To solve the display angle problem, keep the unit upside down! You'll need to jerry rig some kind of support to keep it standing. I use an Audioquest binding post wrench and some blu-tack :-).
Love those Pi video, always amazed by all the things people have made for use on those small computers, very entertaining.
The biggest issue is currently finding Raspberry Pi's, they're currently as scarce as rocking horse ****
4:56 you can use usb drive for your OS so you can change it easily with usb ports on a side of the case
Great video. Very well set out. Can see this being popular one for views for you and over a long period of time.
To reduce the number of power cables, use the jumper cables with the display. Use a power supply that provides atleast 3amps 5v on the usb C and the power low message will go away.
Totally enjoyed that. Fascinating.
Great video John, Smart pi touch pro case, allo Digi one hat, with a standard pi 4 power supply works great. The case comes with a splitter. I never get a low power and one cord. Dead silent with ropieee and controlled with roodial and a PC.
I'm using this setup for a while now. I power the screen from the Pi with a IFI AUDIO IPOWER2 power supply. Work great.
Dac as his own power supply tough
John this was a great video đ itâs interesting and something different than a standard equipment review more of a cool DIY the results are awesome đ„đŻthank you
Ants From Up There is such a brilliant album, happy to see you're enjoying it too
Perfect timing for a project while Iâm in two weeks of lockdown. Intend to update my own pi streamer. This one has the hifi berry dac2hd + DSP hats.
2 week loickdown were you from
Cool little project,, đ„°.
Cheers and thanks John,, đ»đđââ.
i built something very similar about 5 years ago with a hifiberry dac+ lite (it had to be a lite because the non lite version uses i2c and clashes with the screen. i only used 1 power supply, a 5.5v 6a power brick w/leads soldered directly to the gpio. it powers all units flawlessly without the current limiting of the poly fuse. running osmc/kodi with a custom skin/build.i also had to flip the screen and touch interface 180 degrees but it had to be done in the boot config file. main use is for pandora and internet radio and streaming from my own media server while working in the shop. very reliable unit.
Nice ! Will there be an audio review of the Pi-Fi ? It will be interesting to learn about the sound quality, and how it compares with other streamers or HATs.
Glad to see a shout out for black country new road. A true "music first audiophile" record.
Really cool video, thanks. One thing you may find interesting is you can now change the pi to boot from usb instead of sd card. You can then us either a usb stick or a microsd card with a USB adapter and it save you having to take it apart if you need to change the OS.
When Volumio incorporated Tidal Connect last year I got an Allo Usbridge. After some ups and downs the most recent versions of Volumio allow my phone Tidal app to control my streaming perfectly. I don't know if it would even be possible to add a screen to a Usbridge Signature, but my phone basically does the same in the palm of my hand.
Nice.
I packaged up my Squeezebox Touch and put it back in the box after replacing it on my bedside table with a touchscreen & pi & dac hat, because they were more stable and capable than the squeezebox. I tried volumio, but switched to PiCore player after not being able to get volumio to access files on the LMS server in the basement. I always suspected that volumio could read an LMS server elsewhere on the network, but could never find out how to make it work (there's lots of info on making the volumio be an LMS server, I could not find any for volumio as an LMS client).
Nice video, love it, great project for my son and I.
Excellent video. Love seeing the Pi variants you create.
Do you happen to know if Apple Music is supported on volumio or something similar?
If you have issues with Balena Etcher, Raspberry Pi main mage has a fantastic sd card formatter that puts whatever o/s you prefer and you can use a large sd card.
Thanks for the video John! I will build a Streamer like this these days⊠and your jeans jacket is a awesome 80 look đđ
Hi, nice guide video đđ» Is there eq/tone controls in either RoPieee or in Volumio?
Plexamp is currently in development for the Raspberry Pi. Plexamp also has Tidal integration.
is it?? That's what I need to hear bc all my music is on plex so I have held off making a pi streamer
@@dutchkel They mention it in the recent change logs.
Can this be used to select music, or do you still need another device for that? Personally, I'd vastly prefer a dedicated touch device to select and control Roon vs. my phone (or desktop, etc). They're cheap enough that I could attach them to most of my end points which would allow other folks in the house to select/play music.
One problem with volumio is if you play dsd files it has an issue switching from pcm to dsd. Other than that itâs a great solution not only for spotify but also your music library.
I love my Pi 4 with the Allo DigiOne Signature HAT. I'm only disappointed that streaming Qobuz is almost impossible with Moode, have to pay extra with Volumio or other options are way too complicated.
Another great video. I had an original Squeezebox. It died. Miss it. I eventually, with the help of my geeky son in law, moved to Pi's, first with Volumio but eventually went to Diet Pi, using the Logitech Media Software. I added Qobuz. I've had an Allo USBridge for several years, running everything, but at my age of 66, I've been thinking of simplifying and throwing out my preamp, streamer, DAC etc for an NAD C658. I also really want to try Dirac, and this looks like an easy way. But, still, here's another great option, and I'm sure I could even throw Diet PI with LMS and Qobuz in it, and truck on down the road. I had been thinking of going back to a stock Pi. Gives me pause. It's a great time to be into audio. Except for the delays. đ
Bravo Darko
Donât know what it is about you doing the building and explanation of these things but theyâre super relaxing. Iâd be happy if you made a second channel just for building stuff ha
Showing how to put together all the IKEA KALLAX units would be nice....LOL...
It's all so convoluted. I stream tidal from my phone via a node 2i and that crashes/fails to connect/gets stuck regularly. I imagine this setup Darko is proposing will also fail/crash/freeze regularly........so much work and potential for frustration to simply listen to music!
Nice!
Thanks for this upload. I'll dabble on Raspberry Pi. Currently I have an iPad. This iPad is connected to an HDMI Audio Extractor. Extractor is connected to Receiver via Optical. HDMI Audio Extractor's are plenty in Amazon. I bought one for $35 USD.
There is a popular DAC that goes with the Raspberry Pi called the HifiBerry.
thank you great vid awesome content :)
Hello! Great review! Tell me, is there a good external DAC, does it make sense to use a linear power supply for a raspberry streamer with a hi-fi coax and toslink digital output board only?
this is really cool...
Is there a "power off" built into the case? Or do you have to connect the cables?
Love this idea. When the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB comes down to its normal $55 USD price instead of the current $200 I'll consider building one. Curious how the USB output of a Pi 4 compares to the Lightning port of a "decent" late model Apple iPAD as you used in a previous video? Great video by the way. Loved the presentation and clear instructions. Not getting bogged down installing all those additional jumper wires in order to power the assembly with one PSU would make it far easier and as you noted, allow it to power an external DAC.
Same - Google Nest is the same price as the touchscreen by itself for me. Will do that with a cast tab on the device.
Great review...
You got a great attitude. Enjoying about life, what else could be more important?
awesome video! i want to use spotify connect. i take it that the 2gb $129.00 will work or is bump up to 4gb $184.90?
I spy a Rega P8 in the background!
Volumio is a nice polished OS for the Pi, but I really don't like the subscription model for what is essentially a pretty UI.
I have a pi which is running Spotify connect, MPD, Airplay 2, Tidal Connect (MQA) and a few other functions. It's headless (so no screen).
It's not quite as plug and play as Volumio, but all of the features that Volumio lock behind a premium subscription fee are readily available for the pi to install for free.
awesome. is there a way to use my tv as a display for volumio/tidal connect?
Whoa someone else listens to a place to bury strangers! Nice
You know you can add a Fire Tablet as a now playing display in Roon - great value when on sale.
Ok as a Spotify user there is an easier way to have it on a Display. I Start Spotify on my Smartphone and Tablet. Than i connect my Smartphone over Spotify Connect with my Yamaha Receiver. I can now Play Spotify on my Receiver over my Phone and see the Interface on my Tablet. Works great!!!!!!!
I also enjoyed this
What's the main advantage to build and use these Pi configurations, compared with using a standard tablet (iPadOS or Android) with a DAC?
...anyone?
Exactly what I was wondering too
this is to stream via the Wi Fi. So basically you don't need to plug in your ipad, you can just connect to your wi-fi, play a song then the streamer will convert the signal into your speakers wirelessly.
There's not a price or function advantage to doing something like compared just buying a fire tablet.
But you're doing it yourself, however you see fit for various design decisions. You're doing a lot of it yourself, learning a lot along the way, and probably (most definitely) making mistakes. But that's the point!
If your dac is wired to other equipment e.g.stereo your ipad/tablet is limited to it's wired connection to dac? With RPI doing the streaming you're free to use the tablet in any room and still control the music via whatever app. you use.
Using my 65" Sony OLED TV + NVidia Shield ($200) + Schiit Modi Multibit DAC ($250) going to an AMP for Hi-Fi goodness. Android TV OS can do Plex / KODI / VLC / Amazon Music with USB out from the Shield TV Pro.
Is there a reason to power the Pi and the screen independently rather than using the internal connection to feed the Pi power from the display board?
Hey....what about PiCore player and Logitech Media Server.... They are Free and better. Also snakeoil server with Logitech Media sever is the best sounding server solution.
Can i use my android phone as remote with your setup?
Ya'll should try Moode Audio, to me it's the best sounding for Roon and local files.
And works better than Volumio to play files from an external drive
I like Johns approach to audio. Why not using an old iPad for now playing screen and get rid of all the wires?
Amazing!!. Dude can you tell me what would it be the cheapest option to have tidal connect?i have a onkyo reciever and it's the only thing missing function for me.. I have raspberry also but volumio now it's expensive for only tidal connect function.. Thanks in advance!
All I need is Airplay 2 on my gear and Apple Music. My IPhone, IPad and Apple Watch all have touchscreenâs and can control my streaming.
cool
Can You help me? What is better? Topping DX3 Pro or combo Topping E30 + Topping L30?
I use Volumio and it works well. At the time I did it I didnât see the option to fix the upside down display.
Does this act as a Chromecast receiver?
Also, does it have HDMI input and pass-through? Thanks!
I'm eventually going to have to make the move. My quest is trying to have as few things plugged in as I can.
I have a unit, that is very hard to replace, and maybe someone out knows a replacement.
This unit can stream digitally, Spotify, Netflix and Amazon to a DAC. It can play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray. It can take sources like an external hard drive, filled with CD quality. It can also take any CD you insert and burn it at full bit rate, to an internal 80gb hard drive.
It's a playstation 3. Playstation 4,5 can't do all of these things.
So I'm looking for an all in one that's able to do some of these things.
P.S. another bonus with the PS3, is I can control Spotify and CZcams with my phone as a remote.
Have not seen such a device, PC perhaps? Sony ubp-x800m2 can do a lot of it.
Or split the audio/video functions, Reavon player and Bluesound Vault?
Hi Darko...I'm having a problem with getting the screen to display the correct timezone, it's default setting is Amsterdam, I'm in the UK and it won't let me change this setting. Every time I hit apply after changing to Europe /London, A bubble appears over host name, asking to match the requested format. The name is the same as " welcome to ropieee running on" etc etc etc. Any ideas what the issue might?
Love this! Your first Pi Video introduced me to PicCore Player and have been hooked ever since. I hope you continue to make these type of tutorials with a little bit more love to PiCore Player. Keep up the good work as always. Did you by any chance meet Pete Kember while in Lisbon?
with a "nad wireless usb dac 1" it would be an extra portable solution.đ
hi John
great video
do you know is there any software that you can amazon music for this setup
You can add a usb/ remote and will make it usefull since the remote works with Wi-Fi
Mh. Now I feel torn because I don't need it, but it looks good fun to build it... :D
For 200 usd I can get a good tablet
How does the Raspberry compare to a Roon Rock on an Intel NUC - sound wise?
đđ»đđ»đđ»
Speaking of hat based players, is it possible to get a screen to a player like Allo Boss2 Player or Allo Katana Player by using the micro HDMI port on the RPI? thanks.
I'm not 100% certain but think hdmi might not work for touchscreens, I.e.you could output signal to the display but not receive touch commands back to the RPI.
Not helped that the PIs ribbon connector for screens (used to/still?) only work for the official Raspberry screen, crazy IMO. So with dac hats using key pins getting aftermarket screens attached/connected was a challenge I had - solution for me was RpI3 + IQuadio dac hat + DFRobot USB 2.8" touchscreen (ironically I rarely control the unit via the screen). The screen sends/receives signals and takes it's power via one USB cable to the RPI. This was set up in 2018 so options may have changed since then but my set up is still running today using LMS, Jivelite and Squeezer for multi-room music via main hifi and 2 Logitech SqueezeBox players. Jivelite I tweaked as std coding didn't cater for 2.8" screen
Surprised but loved seeing the college dropout is getting played at the Darko house - always interested in your music tastes, any other hip hop albums in your rotation at the moment?
Almost 300 bucks. Getting close to Bluesound Node
Tidal Connect via Volumio didnât see to output MQA for me. Any others see a similar issue?
my PCIe port is used for nvme, is there a good usb-c touch screen with a nice stand for this?
Whatâs the brand/ model of the power outlet as seen at 5:19? Cheers /Joakim
Hi Darko, i Need your help...
I Need to know of Is It possibile tĂČ cast Amazon Music by using DNLA (bubble upnp on the smartphone) versus a Raspberry with Ropieee XL installed in. Which Is the maximum resolution? Thank you very much
Nice but I think i will just continue to use my iPad as my touch screen as then i can control Roon etc from my sitting location.
Great video. Funny you should hark back to the Squeezebox Touch.... the technology is not quite dead yet! As someone who upgraded to an Innuos server/streamer I can still use my Touch for Now Playing (for music stored locally) and navigation, much like the Pi-Fi, and also use an IR remote. (I'm not sure if this would work as well, or at all, if the Innuos were configured as a Roon Core; or if it may also work with other server/streamers.)
Any chance you can do a comparison video on all of the different DAC HATs? Many choices, but hard to find comparisons.
So tempted by this, but the annual subscription for either Volumio or Roon is the biggest impediment. The visual element is great and using the Tidal, Qobuz, or Spotify media *without* an annual fee would make this a killer option. The allure of Roon is lost on me, even after a recent trial. $120USD a year for the nice interface on top of subs for whichever streaming services one uses. I just don't get it.
There is a free version of volumio which doesnât need a subscription
@@DalKangh Yeah, but you don't get all the functionality. Tidal connect for example is only available with the premium version...
@John
Why not use an old LG phone with bit perfect USB out to your external DAC? Touch screen + any app you'd like for the same price or cheaper
As you started this by mentioning the Squeezebox Touch, many may prefer to use piCorePlayer, a similar dedicated Pi image that can be used headless or with a touch screen and acts as a Squeezebox for use with Logitech Media Server. I've got a headless Pi model B with a Cirrus/Wolfson sound card attached, that feeds a topping DX3Pro+ on my desk (via coax) and a touch screen version in the lounge. The lounge unit uses a SmartiPi case, which has a Justboom Digi HAT inside, feeding a Chord Mojo via Optical as the DAC. The Digi HAT comes with an IR remote sensor that can be used with a standard Squeezebox remote, if you have one, and works out of the box with piCorePlayer.
Using an I2S to optical/SPDIF HAT with Volumio works really well. It allows very high bitrate files to be played without the processing overhead of a DAC plugged in via USB.
Will the pi work with the screen and the allo digione?
Using the phone allows you to use the phone mic for search , type?
nice video, I just remembered I'm not an electronic engineer đ
Is there anything like this but with or for Chromecast as a google household Chromecast is non-negotiable
Moode plus Logitech Media Server on my desktop gives me the Tidal experience without any subscription.
Don't deny it, we're here from the Car Thing drama
