- For the first time in a few years, the top of the MVP race includes of some new candidates. With Embiid out with a knee injury, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic make their push for the award, joining the two 2-time MVPS, Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo to form the top four candidates as the NBA regular season approaches its final weeks. Let’s go over the rules.

Jokić is a generational talent with a skill few others possess. He raises his teammates comprehension/IQ while displaying incomparable passing skills and touch whenever he is on the court. He is also as consistent as any player I’ve ever seen…
Funny that you could say this same exact thing for luka
@@heartbreakerdan8857i was about to comment the exact same thing lmao
@@heartbreakerdan8857Luka is the greatest passer of all time and the Mavs only have 7 less wins than the nuggets even despite being the 3rd most injured team in the league
Luka is obviously the MVP
Joker today: 26 pts 18 Rbs 16 asts
@@MortisNuntius ok? Lmao luka had 36 pts 15 rbs and 18 asts this season too. And a 73 pointer, and a 50 pointer, and a 49 and 45 and 45
"Best player on best team" is lazy and FAR too subjective as an MVP metric.
Couldn’t agree more.
Winning matters
@@TisGOBBLEdeGOOKbet your azz it does, but winning in the Easy is far easier than doing it in West. Denver swept the Cs and Denver is in a tie for 1st in the West
No it’s not, Russell Westbrook should’ve never won mvp. Steve Nash swept the lakers and him and his team were a top 3 team in the suns while he was efficient… best player on a top 3 best team
Fair enough, but I think “the Joker” has the best stats on top of being the best player on the best team. I think he should be the winner, but if they gave it to Luka, I wouldn’t think that was wrong.
Thanks for reminding us, through WIN SHARES, that Jokic shoulda won MVP last season too and should be on a roll to win a Legendary 4th in a row
Can't agree more; he was robbed last season
Last year but advanced stats get twisted depending on how good a team is and what the rotations are like. Jokic’s are inflated compared to Luka’s because he’s had a healthier team and plays with starters more often
@@deadlylightningspirit4295 the Nuggets have played without their 2nd best player for +20 games… 2nd best player who is not an All-Star like Kyrie…
hes my goat already, great content!
Appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
luka has never been in a slump in the playoffs
SGA shouldn’t even been in the MVP discussion 🙅🏽♂️ period.
That’s what he’s saying
@@lorenzoferina42 right bro… u get what I’m saying. Some ppl’s reading comprehension skills stink 🤦🏽♂️. Honestly I’ve been saying this all year. Kidd should also get coach of the year. With all of the injuries this team endured throughout the season it’s a miracle that the Mavs are even in playoff contention. Which makes my first point as to why Luka is the clear MVP. He’s the most valuable player to his team! MVP isn’t a team award. It’s weird that the national media is suggesting that it is all of a sudden. They just keep moving the goal post when it comes to the Mavs/Luka. They did the same thing to Dirk. Dirk should’ve retired with at least 2 MVP’s
Bro deleted the comment 💀

It’s alright Luka gone to 2 now slow and steady he will be 1
Watching The joker's career has been nothing less than sensational. I enjoy watching him destroy the league with his multifaceted talent. Every year he accumulates both statistical achievement along with unprecedented team play. I hope he wins it all again this year so I can enjoy bumping him up further until my greatest of all time list. It will be very fascinating to see where he ends up when his career is over. It'll be even more interesting to see how it compares to Victors career
Is Jokic the most efficient player ever?
Jokic's career PER of 27.92 surpasses Jordan's 27.91, placing him as the most efficient player in NBA history according to this metric. Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a statistic aimed at calculating a player's positive contributions and efficiency per minute.
Indeed. His career PER is in the 28s now and the last few years has been in the 30s. So it is still going up. Absolutely insane!
He has had the highest PER per season these last few years. Historical. His career PER is not yet representative of his full greatness because his first seasons were not that good.
@@SamuelBlackMetalRider he still has the highest PER for a career in history. He is in 28s and Mj is second in the 27s
Best player on the best team is only brought up when Jokic is winning😂😂
The point was that neither Luka, Jokic, Shai, nor Giannis fit the “best player/best team.” That narrative is usually applied to the team with the best overall record (Celtics).
@@SportsPantheon nah fam Ur good, I'm talking about the general narrative
@@SportsPantheonGiannis last year was the best player on the best team (record) averaging 30 12 and 5 and they still had jokic and Embiid in a 2 man race for mvp
That’s a good point. It seems like they’re really moving away from that tradition.
Wtf??? No it's not 😂 he's statistically by far the best, every year. Impact wise its not close
If Jokic is in a big market team, for example Celtics or Lakers or GSW, he would be 1st in every single regular season, no metter of injuries because there will always be decent player to replace them. In Denver if 1 guy is hurt, there is rookie or vet that has to replace him... so team ranking is not that important in my opinion. Value is if you can make good team great or bad team at least good. Thats what Joker does in his small market team and it seems like league doesnt respect that...
How is Luka not doing an out of this world stat line that other mvps have gotten their mvps for? Almost a 33 ppg triple double with an injured mavs half the season. Was play-in for the majority of the year until his team started playing again and now they are the most dangerous duo( arguably maybe Murray and jokic can compete) and 5th seed. Luka has been half of the Mavs points as well. Value wise its gotta be Luka
If we’re talking about unprecedented
If you take away free throw points in the average of a season, Luka is #1 in nba history, jordan was second, and kobe was third. I forgot the exact numbers but luka has around 27.5, jordan had like 27 and kobe with like 26
Jokic’s PER has been the highest in NBA history too. Along other metrics I’m forgetting. Jokic is putting more unprecedented / historical / « not since Wilt » stats than ANY other player. And I love Luka
@@SamuelBlackMetalRider im not knocking on jokic, hes the best player weve seen in the newer generation could be a hall of famer already, but for luka whos also putting up historical stats (no one ever averageing a 34-9-10) most efficient 70+ point game ever, and for single handedly carrying a severly injured team from the 8th seed to the 5th seed deserves mvp.
The most played nuggets lineup has 800 minutes this season while the mavs just recently hit 120 minutes with their most recent lineup. Kyrie missing 22 games and a horrible team before gafford and washington got traded, and even when the team got better recently, luka is still putting up the same insane stats while elevating his teams, lively and gafford are top 2 field goal percentage and true shooting in the league, still being able to have kyrie have one of his best seasons 25-5-5 a better stat line than when he won a ring
@@heartbreakerdan8857 Murray missing 20+ games too. Jokic elevating his teammates like NO ONE ELSE. Also killing Luka in WIN SHARES
@@SamuelBlackMetalRider Bruh stop saying “LIKE NO ONE ELSE” there is someone else and ITS LUKA but take a look at specifically what each team has done without their star player on the games they missed
Jokic:
OKC- lost by only 5 points
Trailblazers- won against trash team
Clippers- playoff team and won by 9
So against a top 2 team, they still put up their own without jokic
Luka:
Grizzles- lost by 14
Rockets- lost by 26
Wolves- lost by 8
Trailblazers- won by 36
Wolves- lost by 34
Pelicans- lost by 10
Pelicans- won by 5
Knicks- won by 4
OKC- lost by 7 (kyrie dropped 36)
The mavs are way more inconsistent and horrible without luka, and most of the time earlier in the season, many players were injured. Kyrie missed 22 games this year and luka still managed to carry a team to the 5th seed rn
@@SamuelBlackMetalRider how u gonna say “like no one else” when he literally is the reason gafford and lively are TOP 2 IN THE LEAGUE for fg%, they are 12-1 in their last 13 games, and luka hasnt lost in any of those games he played in, u looking at win shares but how about looking at player impact estimate, jokic is 21.1 and luka is 20.1, not killing luka there.
There has only been 3 MVPs that didn’t lead the league in at least 3 of the 5 big advanced stats; VORP, WS, WS/48, PER, B+/-
Jokic leads in all 5 and it’s not particularly close.
Jokić the REAL MVP 💪
I think it should be as simple as who is the most valuable to their team. A player whos team is unrecognizable without them
Who would that be to you?
@@SportsPantheon jokic but I'm biased to my home team. So take my option with a grain of salt lol
Jokic is unbelievable. He represents what the international game has brought to the nba at the very highest level. But is there a world where victor wembanyama takes things to another level? Im not sure. But if he can consistently improve on his stats like we project young players to do could he get to a point where he is averaging 30 12 and 5 blocks winning mvp and dpoy. I honestly am not sure if you can create a better basketball player. Idk maybe im tripping but…
How many players u can name that have deffinitly had a higher peak than Joker. I can name only two, and those beeing MJ and Lebron... There are a few more player u could debate, but the fact we can only name 2 guys with higher peak is scary. Jokić will deffinitly be top10 player all time, when all said and done(if he wins 1 or more rings) and with this Denver I can easily see them going for 3x back2back2back...
He’s gotta be top 20, he wins again this year he surpasses guys like Moses and KD, definitely top 15 knocking on the top 10 door.
I say Luka is MVP, ultimately did more with less. Carried a team riddled with injuries for over 3 months and the once the made the deadline trades to get Gafford an PJ Washington Dallas was the best team in the league. They had a better record than Denver over the final stretch not counting the Final 2 games when Dallas rested their starters. Also, considering Jokic does a ton of his work within a few feet if the basketball and Luka is running the whole offense says a lot. Consider Luka takes over 10 3’s a game. His degree of difficulty to get his points is greater than jokic. He simply does more for his team. Luka was the most valuable player to his team in the league and he put up arguably one of the greatest single season performances in history. MVP
Yeah it’s over 🔥 Jokic is an all time great.
Nuggets the 3rd seed after the whole team being healthy all year? He doesnt deserve it because that's just too low or a seed.
@@agayactornamedmichaeldougl6289now they’re 2nd. And Murray, their 2nd best player has missed like 20 games (!!) or something
@@agayactornamedmichaeldougl6289 No, the whole team wasn't healthy all year. Murray will not play 20+ games this season (he was out for the last 3-4 games), Gordon wasn't there around 10 games as well, and Jokic only missed 3 games so far. They are currently second, with the same number of wins as first team OKC, somewhat easier schedule till the end than OKC, so 1st seed is open, there are 7-8 games left.
Jokic advanced stats are schewed, because he always plays with starters and Denver doesn't have a good replacement at center. Luka has been by far the best player this season and Jokic is the favorite only because he should have won last season and he actually won championship.
I get the rotation argument but I do think it is an oversimplification. I think it also highlights the lack of depth the Nuggets have, mixed with the overall impact Jokic has on winning. I think Luka has had a remarkable year, but so has Jokic.
I agree, Jokic is the one.
The Mavs recent game against the nuggets showed how to shut jokic down
win shares is the only right answer
I like my MVP with a little struggle, Shai/Ant nobody thought theyd be this good, after last season. Same goes for Luka Kyrie takes such a huge load of Luka that it allows him to take better shots and it shows. When Murray was injured and Jokic was solo putting up wild numbers he deserved it because of the struggle.
If Dallas gets to number 4 it's Luka. If they stay in 6th, It's Jokic. They're both great. Luka is just better this year.
It's not the best player on the best team. It's the most valuable player of the league. But standings do matter non the less.
I think this is a rly fair way to put it. Jokic isn’t untouchable here even though his play is astounding. Definitely a hard pick between the dude who got robbed of 3 and potentially 4 in a row bc of perks brain damage vs a dude who felt voter fatigue before a single win
You forgot one of the main factors in determining the MVP selection: race and color.
Let’s hope not.
@@SportsPantheon They proved that last year.
Luka deserved for MVP this 2024...his talented player...BE PROUD, BE SUPPORT, BE HAPPY...
there is no definition to the MVP because it's NOT a fcking objective evaluation. It's a fcking popularity contest. says nothing about anything.
That's why Jokic doesn't care about it.
also luka is 7th in steals
Jokic is 2nd in defensive win shares
to say that it's over is really controversial ... look at the mavs with or without luka... they wouldn't even make the play in it's just sad that 2 players can have great season yet ppl don't recognize them both being
I think their should be co mvps when there isnt a clear cut winner.
If luka can get more wins than the nuggets, then yes, he can be the MVP, but if not, jokic should be MVP no debate
Luka’s team performs the same with or without him. His lack defense is hard hide, and his ball dominate style makes his teammates lose interest.
Luka is a better player than Jokic, jokic is great and second or third but Luka is the best
Lol
Kobe did nothing that would deserve MVP.
What?

James is easy to guard. Let him get his garbage points early in the game and put him in the line at the end. He's not clutch or a great ft shooter.

at the end of the day jokic is the best player in the world jmo but luka is definitely the mvp (mavs fan) kai and murray have. equally been hurt but our main starting five has just now cracked 120 minutes together (might be a little higher) while denver has played 800 min, luka has carried mavs to 5th seed w/o him were 🔥💩 that’s definition of MVP
I see it this way:
Nuggets with Jokic: Amazing team
Nuggets without Jokic: Great team
Mavericks with Luka: Amazing team
Mavericks without Luka: Average/Good team at best
Luka is MVP in my heart
Trust me bro. They are not a good team without jokic. Just look at his on/off numbers
I think this is a stretch. The Nuggets have great chemistry and experience together, but there is a reason Jokic has such a high box plus minus. They have great pieces around Jokic but are highly dependent on him. But let’s be clear, Luka is in a similar situation.
Murray and Irving have missed almost the exact same amount of games this season, I would argue that Kyrie is a better player. Overall, the Nuggets have the better pieces but I don’t think the difference is as great as you think.
Also, I’m a big Luka fan. If he wins I won’t be mad.
@@SportsPantheon yeah I get it. But they are not a great team without jokic. The clippers are a great team. Without jokic Denver is not as good as the clippers. They are maybe as good as the kings. Good, but definitely not great
@eleazaradigbuem7130 My previous comment was really for the original from @awildrengarappeared8419
I actually agree with you. I think the Nuggets are in the play-in or missing the playoffs without Jokic.
@@SportsPantheon Fair enough. You probably know a lot more about basketball than me. I understand that Jokic has better advanced metrics in (almost?) every category. It's most likely just my bias, but I feel like that also has to do with how much pressure is on Luka. This is the first time it looks like they have a team around him finally, but he is still expected to produce insane numbers. Because of this, in my mind it makes sense why that would hinder his efficiency.
Jokic and Luka are both generational players in my eyes, both of them are big favorites of mine.
While doncic leads the league in points he also leads the league in attempts and missed shots by a lot.. so I kinda hope you’re leading the league in points
Also one of the leaders in assists per game but the leader in turnovers this season. To say the least doncic has not been close to as efficient as Nikola
Well that goes hand in hand, bc luka handles the ball so much hes gonna have more turnovers, leading the league in usage rate and leading the league in turnovers isnt unexpected. Jokic has a usage rate of 29% with 2.9 turnovers a game. Luka has 36% with 4 turnovers a game
And guess what the ratio between usage rate and turnovers is between the two?
Luka - 0.09
Jokic - 0.1
@@heartbreakerdan8857he’s also led the league in shot quality created the last 3 years including the best ever in the tracking era. The Mavs lead the league in open shots per game which are largely created by Luka directly or indirectly (leads league in secondary assists).
What’s fascinating though is Jokic has 614 assists on 5,079 passes. Luka has 607 assists on 3,451 passes. Luka’s potential assists total is 1,046 and has created 1,551 assisted points. Jokic has 993 potential assists and created 1,515 assisted points. Their passing metrics are nearly identical except Luka has done it with 1,500 fewer passes. Some of that is probably due to the difference in how each team operates the offense through them, but any notion Luka isn’t an efficient player is absurd. (Also none of that is a knock on Jokic in any way-of course he’s historically great too)
Also doncic isn’t shooting bad

Who do you think deserves it this year?
Luka MVP he scored 21 more points then Joker when they played the other day. Thats reality not Fantasy sports.Plus he beat a Kings team twice who Lakers were 0-10 against with Sabonis in game. Lukas stats speak reality your stats are Fantasy.
Bro saying Luka being 5th in W/S basically means he won’t win is laughable. Luka is going to win and this won’t age well. His stat line is outrageous and after destroying Houston tonight he’s the favorite.

Denver fan here, celtics are the best team in my opinion, hopefully im wrong come playoff time
Luka is a little better imo. Averaging +8 more PPG while also averaging more Assists is nothing to just easily dismiss. The Joker's playmaking separates him from 99% of the league, but not from Luka.
@@imdbtruth Jokic is way more efficient. Also the impact metrics STRONGLY favor Jokic.
When Jokic had a worse roster than Luka had last year, his on/off stats were still significantly better than Luka's on/off stats this year. So you can't use the "Luka bad teammates/Jokic good teammates" narrative on that one.
This year Jokic on/off: +19.1
Jokic 21-22: +16.4
Luka 22-23: +4.9
