  • Exercise and fitness is important after an abdominoplasty. In this video, Dr. Bernard Beldholm FRACS, a body contouring specialist surgeon in Australia, shares the best exercises after abdominoplasty at each stage of recovery.
Many patients think that staying in bed all day is the best way to heal. This thinking is outdated. Today, doctors know that it is important to get moving as soon as possible after surgery. Yes, even on Day 1! While you won’t be working out or lifting heavy groceries for a few weeks after abdominoplasty, light physical activity such as walking can be extremely beneficial.
Knowing what to expect at each stage of recovery helps make sense of the kinds of exercise that can be done. Here is an exercise plan for what most patients can expect in the weeks following surgery:
    1-2 weeks after surgery
Walking is the best thing to do at this stage. The latest medical science says that walking soon after an abdominoplasty can improve recovery. Standing up to walk every few hours is all that is needed. For the first day, you may need to walk only for a few minutes. It can be hard on the first day, but well worth it. Walking has been shown to reduce the risk of blood clots after surgery. You can walk more each day. Be patient, you will be walking upright by Day 10.
    2-4 weeks after surgery
You guessed it. More walking! Now you are walking upright and can do even more walking each day. Light cycling (on a machine only - stay off the road) is also possible for most patients. Non-strenuous daily activities also become a possibility. Avoid heavy lifting of any kind. For example, bags of heavy groceries or weight lifting is a no-go.
    4-6 weeks after surgery
Now that you're healing nicely, light exercise may be resumed. Low-impact aerobics are a good idea. You can also start taking longer walks. Lifting arm and leg weights is also possible for most patients. Don't strain yourself too much though. You are still healing. Remember, if you feel pain, stop. Wound breakdown is still a possibility now. Avoid stretching and vigorous exercise at this time.
    6-8 weeks after surgery
Hooray! You're back to a full exercise routine. Body lift and extensive abdominoplasty patients may require a few extra weeks to return to full exercise, however. Avoid starting any extreme exercise routines for now. Basic full exercise is what to aim for. At 7-weeks post-op, marked swelling is present, but discomfort will be nearly gone.
    8+ weeks after surgery
Everything is starting to feel more like normal now. You're feeling good. You can take your full exercise routine a bit further now. When in doubt about any exercise routine, ask your surgeon for advice.
Let’s get moving and on the way to a speedy recovery!

I've watched a few of your videos and have found them very helpful. I'm about 2.5 weeks post TT and I am on point with your timelines. Thanks for doing these videos... I think (sometimes) a surgeon's office take for granted how little patients know about the little things that can/cannot be done. . Watching your videos along with others have helped me become more informed. Again thanks for your vids❣️

i had a tummy tuck with no muscle repair 10 days ago and even though its definitely easier than having muscle repair, im SO glad i worked hard on strengthening my core for a few months before surgery. ive also been doing pilates which has helped with the slower movements because i can squat down without bending to pick things up and its no issue at all. i love my results so far, i can almost stand up completely straight :)

I Am 9 weeks post surgery TT with lipo on sides. I also had diastasis about 3 inches that was repaired. Doing lots of walking and just beginning to use light weights. Would swimming be ok? Would love to row, but feel a bit nervous due to the repair. Is it ok to do these two activities with my timeline and having had tummy repair?

Hi almost 4 Months ago I had Muscle repair, tummy tuck, and lipo the outer thighs, love handles & some on upper back but I look like I gained weight in the abdominal areas even though I eat clean & exercise 3x a week some walking, I went to see my surgeon about it and he said it is fat not swelling, what to do to get my tummy somehow better than looking like a 2nd trimester pregnant?! Thank you in advance.

It is always best to get advise from your surgeon as they know exactly what has been done and will see the recovery process in your post operative appointments. In my experience, swelling can last up until 12 months post surgery. For the best results, I will use Vaser Liposuction as part of the tummy tuck surgery.

Hi Usha, Thank you for your comment! It does depend on the type of abdominoplasty you have had so it is always best to talk to your surgeon who will advise on the best exercise for their method.

When is the perfect time to return to work

It would be best to speak with your surgeon so that they can advise the best timeframe for you as well as monitor your recovery. Generally, patients can return to non-manual work around 4 weeks and if work requires more physical activity it is best to wait 6-8 weeks.

Lol, I’m on week 3 and can’t stand straight. This video seems unrealistic.

That is disappointing for you, recovery can greatly depend on the technique used when performing tummy tuck surgery - older techniques can create a longer recovery period. Dr Beldholm uses VASER liposuction in a tummy tuck procedure which has created a better recovery in his experience. Patients can be discharged from the hospital at day 3-5 and, as a receptionist in Dr Beldholm's clinic, I have seen patients come in for their 5 day post op appointment able to stand upright - there may be a little hunching from the tightness but patients are in good spirits. Patients are generally able to drive after 2 weeks. Each individual will have different recovery periods, this is something you may wish to discuss with your surgeon at your next post op appointment.

It took me almost 4 weeks to really stand straight. Everyone is different depending on what you had done and your fit level. How do you feel now?
