      Best productio design ?
Sorry but if it did not translate well onto the screen its not a great production design .... its beautiful yes but not great. The first 2 Indy movies had wonderfully atmospheric sets without needing lots of mechanical moving parts, its all about a sense of visual aesthetics to get the atmosphere right ...
How can you even put the Well of Souls, the Map Room, Marion's Nepal salon and the opening booby trap/rolling boulder set in Raiders below anything in Skull ???
The aliens and alien spacecraft in Skull would have been done a thousand times more visually epic by Ridley Scott so don't rank it as great design please ....

I think the case can be made that this is an objectively false statement. The Indiana Jones movies were meant to reflect the kind of lighting seen in noir movies of the 1940s with the swashbuckling action of adventure serials from the 30s. Think Casablanca, They were Expendable, and A Place in the Sun when inferring the kind of lighting tones Spielberg wanted in the original 3 movies. The cinematographer in the first 3 pictures understood the assignment, his new cinematographer, Janus Kasminski, while I’m a fan of his work in all of Spielberg’s other movies, missed the mark more or less when it came to how the lighting, specifically shadows works in an Indiana Jones movie. The best shots of Indy are him in darkness, or stepping from light into a shadow. Or the camera, like in a John Ford movie, pushing in through the light to get to the character. Those elements are few and far between in Krystal Skull, but ironically are all over the place in Dial of Destiny

I think this movie needed to be made about 7 years earlier - it would have made a huge difference to Indy's look and physical abilities. If memory serves, this one was made within 2 years of Ford breaking his leg.

No, that happened after this movie his physical abilities were great in Crystal Skull. You can especially tell in the area 51 warehouse sequence when he's climbing and running across the crates that he's in incredible shape for his age and looks pretty good for his age as well.

@@devanworkman8745 You're correct. Thanks for your reply. I agree - he did look good for his age. I just wish they had made the final movie around this time (2008 to 2010 timeframe) and had made Crystal Skulls around 2000. I would have just preferred him retiring from his 'grave-robbing' in his mid-60s than at nearly 80.

I don't care if El Dorado wasn't connected to Crystal Skulls in the legends. As far as I know the holy grail didn't cure you according to old legends either. There's nothing wrong in connecting different legends in creative ways.
But it's much more interesting when the story is at least partly related to real history and real legends. The physical sets are beautiful BUT the moving mechanisms of the sets are way too smooth, so much that they look like CGI ....
Ancient things are supposed to be creaky, the moving stairs and complicated door should function more naturalistically so that it does not look like CGI ..
In terms of lighting, the scenes probably needed more physical fogging and variation of light and darks to bring out the grandeur and the moods ...
In contrast, Raiders had wonderfully atmospheric visuals, absolutely gorgeous because the lighting was so naturalistic and they managed light and darks to the effect of bringing out a sense of mystery about the locations .... The first 2 Indy movies had great lighting crews ... Last Crusade a little lesser but still quite good ....
Sometimes absolute clarity is undesirable because it makes things look unrealistically too sharp and clear like CGI ....in real life we are used to seeing things through slightly dusty atmosphere esp adventure movie like this ...

I did not have any problems with the plot of the film, as it follows some peoples beliefs, just like the religious artifacts of the previous films. There are people who believe that ancient civilizations in the amazon were created by aliens and that there even are holes there that can transport people to other dimensions. It's just not as "popular" as the beliefs from the previous films. Some believe that the explorer Percy Fawcett, who was searching for what he called "The lost city of Z"(some say it was El Dorado) was abducted by aliens or got trapped in another dimension while searching for the lost city in the Amazon. So yeah. The plot of this film isn't as far fetched as the original films. The problem is how it was executed. I'm sure they have lots of material in storage and if they re-edited it and added/removed some scenes, it can be a lot better. (We can wonder why we haven't seen any "special features" deleted scenes from it on the DVD/Blu Ray's)
