      Bought AMP to try based on the benefit of SBC and thought "if Lance and a few others recommend why not". After watching this video its interesting because on the packaging it does say "More is more" which means use faster so you buy more (marketing and sales 101).
      Now in reality, I am not sure if its the caffiene, AMP PR lotion, placebo effect, or the focused hard work of watching these videos and applying the science but I have been hitting PR after PR on FTPs.

    • @jasonsavill985
      @jasonsavill985 Před 4 lety +4

      I ordered some to try and it seemed to work for me. I noted a lower rate of perceived exertion during my hard efforts, and seemingly less build up of lactic acid, but actually found that I had increased muscle soreness the first few times I used it. I did not however use it post workout as recommended for recovery.
      My takeaways -
      Amp human helped to lower my perceived exertion during hard training, which in turn improved my confidence in my ability to complete said training, which increased my desire to actually do the training prescribed.
      Since using the lotion I have seen a 5% increase in my FTP, of which I credit almost all of it to my coach and the work put in. But maybe, just maybe Amp Human helped me to get there.

    I cannot say enough how skeptical I am of these claims. The heart rate graph was dodgy in the extreme. And if you resort to that you cant be trusted. I also doubt the claim that they can get transdermal delivery of a small anion into large deep muscles in sufficient quantity to improve buffering, and ( if that's not enough) have it stay there. Even the data on oral bicarb arent real strong. I may be too skeptical sometimes., maybe because I have a PhD in pharmacology and have been working scientist for 30+ years. It is easy to fool yourself even when there is no money at stake. Bear in mind that studies showing no effect of a treatment don't generally get published. How many times did sports scientists do studies on oral bicarb that showed no effect? We don't know. (This publication bias problem permeates biomedical literature, so it pays to be skeptical of small effects). Also throwing out subjects who had adverse effects is VERY bad form.

      @raphaeltiziani7476 Před 4 lety +6

      @@raphaeltiziani7476Near the end of your PhD means you are a scientist already as far as I am concerned. In life sciences a few journals exist that in theory will publish an interesting negative result. PLoS ONE, FASEB Bioreports are examples. But you are correct, sometimes negative results tell you a lot. It seems like in physics you can publish well performed negative results easier. In biomedical sciences most people dont even try to publish negative results, sometimes even when they contradict previously published positive results. So I say again, don't be easily persuaded by small effects that seem implausible, and for a lot of reasons I doubt that oral bicarb can have much effect on blood bicarb. And as for a topical bicarb lotion? Extraordinary claims like that require extraordinary evidence.

    Well I've been using it now for a few months and my experience has been that it works very well and I have been very happy with the results. I race Motocross and cross train with Mtn biking I have mainly used it for Motocross and I was shocked that it really worked. What I noticed was I could sustain my intensity longer and also near the end of a moto I would normally start breathing hard and have to really focus on that witch was distracting. With the Amp Human I finish and notice I'm not breathing nearly as hard and recover better for the second moto, and the next day I noticed that I am not as sore and stiff and my legs seem to feel light and not heavy. I wanted to do my own test to see if I was crazy, so anyone that knows anything about motocross knows it takes months to get in Race Shape if you have not been riding. So I had a buddie who had not been on a bike for ten years and just started racing again, I gave him one of the sample packs that I had and at the end of the day he said it was almost like his endurance was better overnight and now will not ride without using the lotion. So for what it's worth I think this stuff has really helped me and by the way I have NOT told any of the guys I race against anything about this stuff and my buddy I made him promise not to say anything either.

    I've used this stuff a few times - Topical Edge though, haven't tried it yet as the re-branded "Amp" name. Interestingly enough, when I did a 75 mile ride with 11,000 feet of climbing, it felt like the first 7,000 vertical feet, I had barely ridden. Granted, I was keeping a pretty easy effort as the final 4.7 mile climb (Mt. Baldy) that averages 9% blows - but after it started wearing off and fatigue started to set in about 3/4 of the way through the ride, it was almost like an on/off switch to where my legs felt great and fresh, to "this kind of sucks". I've also used it for some time trial events - around a 31 minute effort, and I think the biggest benefit was with recovery - my legs didn't feel nearly as hammered the following day.

    Be careful with "soda loading" through ingestion. Aside from it allowing you to shit through a screen door without touching the wires, it can cause other severe and dangerous side effects if overused. Don't forget, you don't know the starting alkalinity of your blood before consuming (unless you have a means of readily measuring blood pH), or how fast your body is metabolizing NaBiCarb and whether you are dangerously elevating the pH of your blood. It can also affect the absorption and rate of absorption of other medications. Not to mention hydration also plays a role in blood pH. Be really careful if you are diabetic.
    When I was an athlete, I remember the talk going around about whether to use it or not. In particular it was around 2005 or so, I remember an athlete having suddenly died in her apartment before training. She was a high performance runner. One of her roommates said she was using NaHCO3 and that she saw her using it before she died. She died as a result of a cardiac episode. While it wasn't "officially" what caused her death because a direct correlation/causation couldn't be proven, it was definitely alluded to and in the running world Soda Loading attributed to her death through an accidental overdose. I tried to find the article, but it's been soooo long I can't find it. Also, it wasn't listed as a "direct result", more or less the article discussed the dangers of an overdose and how the runner's death followed the path of an overdose and she was known to soda load.
    I'm not a doctor, clearly. But just understand there are more dangers to using NaBiCarb than just the shits or vomiting.

Took first dose 3 hours out then 2.5/2/1.5/1 @ 0.4g/kg body weight. Taken with carbs, banana and jelly babies were the standard as usually trying to high jump at the time, never experimented with bigger meals. Chances are before hour zero you'll find yourself sh***ng out the eye of a needle at least 2-3 times which is why you should experiment in training. Once I didn't have time to eat that much, could only drink fluids, things got messy down the home stretch... One of the biggest things i noticed though was the improved recovery for the second day compared to not taking it at all. Very good stuff if you can figure out what works for you. What's the evidence on sodium citrate (sodium citrate is the salt you get when you mix sodium bicarbonate with citric acid - in many electrolyte sports drinks)? It was mentioned in one of the papers you showed. Does sodium citrate similarly effective? If so, is there less risk of GI distress?
    I've long mixed up my own electrolyte mix for my water bottles - sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride, in quantities so as to result in a mix of sodium citrate and some excess sodium bicarbonate (and perhaps potassium citrate too, I guess ;) ). I've done this primarily to help avoid cramps, which I was prone to before. Not noticed performance benefits though.

    Great video. What we fail to always consider when looking at ergogenic aids is that while one might work the effects are not additive, good point on that paper with caffeine and bicarbonate. At the end of the day is way easier to down a second cup of coffee than play with bicarbonate hoping that you get the numbers right and not get into GI issues. That being said, I did find bicarbonate helpful when I tried backwards hat Dylan's suggestion of eating the 12 taco bell tacos.

      poochie: You do realize dark roast beans used in espresso delivers significantly less caffeine than super light (green) beans in a normal cup of coffee right? Probably not. Most people incorrectly assume espresso gives you a concentrated dose of caffeine. It most certainly does not. Also the longer a bean is roasted (ie darkened) the more the caffeine is destroyed/converted to other organic compounds.

    • @mrsmartypants_1
      @mrsmartypants_1 Před 4 lety

      poochie: Umm son? We’re talking performance enhancing caffeine here for a race or endurance outing with friends. As such one would be wise to effuse green or blond coffee as it delivers a much higher dose of caffeine vs a low dosage espresso. Secondly I can assure you McDonalds does not sell green and blond brews lol. Most mediocre coffee shops don’t either. As a side note - central and South American coffee growers - the best in the world generally think espresso is kinda sacrilegious as it destroys their beautiful craft beans - turning them into burnt charcoal. When the worlds premiere coffee tasters look for new sources of great beans they drink blond coffee as it brings out the best flavor the plantation has to offer. Espresso is an Italian thing of origin when great fresh beans were impossible to attain. The burning of the beans cover up their shortcomings. With that said I love espresso after a great dinner out after devouring massive amounts of protein. I have visited, stayed at and consumed a lot of coffee at numerous “haciendas” on coffee plantations throughout central and South America. My favorite was actually in the rain forest of Puerto Rico (before the hurricane). And you lol?

    I don't think sodium ions or bicarbonate ions can be absorbed through the skin. Bicarbonate is also easily broken down to CO2 and H2O. We have "a thing" with the Mg creams/gels. As I remember from school, molecules must have specific lipophilic/hydrophilic properties to go through the skin. Just look at the NSAID gels (diclofenac, Ibuprofen).
