Abaca can produce many things because when dried and processed it becomes very sturdy. Out of them can make furnitures, bags, slippers, ropes, nets, baskets, summer hats and many more.. It's one of the main products in Bicol, Philippines where I live.

Gees, in the states we spend so much on gym membership and buying all sorts of supplements and protein powders. That guy has attained the physic we spend so much money for just by pulling abaca fibers. The combination of a year round warm weather, daily consumption of natural organic foods and an active lifestyle just walking distance from the ocean helps too.

A couple of things about Abaca (Scientific name: Musa Textilis or Manila Hemp as it is popularly known worldwide).The plant is endemic to the Philippines largely in the Bicol Region which also has the largest area planted for abaca, with 43.16 thousand hectares (as per 2019 stats). The Philippines is the top exporter of this product which
due to its durability, flexibility, and resistance to saltwater damage, it is commonly used in fishing lines and nets, ropes, and twines. Other applications of abaca involve its use as a material in manufacturing bags, carpets, diapers, pill coatings, textile, and surgical masks. A footnote; Aside from Abaca the Philippines is also a major exporter of Copra (dried coconut meat for cooking oil making), pineapples amongst other things.

I miss my father. His death anniversary was 2 days ago. This was my father's job and my grand father's as well. It's a bit difficult. I tried it before when i was young (elementary years). But abaca farms in our area got destroyed by a certain virus. Abaca farmers declined also. It's been maybe around 20 yrs since the contamination. Even now abaca plants are still not growing well. Farmers became old, alot of them already died. Most of their descendants already have different jobs. Old abaca farms in the mountains are becoming grasslands and forests.
I miss the smell of the new abaca fibers. ❤

I was originally from this area. In 1996, I moved out of the province to study in Manila. I haven't been to the island since 2010. Our island's primary product is abaca. It was used to manufacture coarse cloth for sacking, fishing nets and lines, ropes, and twines. The principal application of abaca fiber at the moment is in papermaking, while there is a thriving niche market for abaca furnishings, screens, clothes, and curtains. The abaca crop was damaged by the typhoon in 2021, but the island recovered. Kulas (Kyle Jennerman) always makes the trip there to assist in that particular location. There is a part 2 of this video and you see how beautiful the island is. On the other side of the island is literally the Pacific Ocean.

My family worked for the family who had businesses in the village of buying copra/dried coconut. So they had to buy dried abaca fibers to make sacks for the copra. I started at 4yrs old working as an abaca twiner using a manual device. Next to that process was my father had to wave the twisted abaca to make large sacks for the copra.
Another thing I experienced back then was making bags from abaca, called MACRAME. And that was for export. This was back in the 70’s and 80’s. I thought I was just playing, I didn’t find it hard work back then hehehehe.

@@DANDJREACT If you've heard of Manila hemp, that's actually abaca rope. Most sailing ships of the 18th and 19th centuries, before the advent of plastic fiber, used Manila hemp. The galleon ships plying the Manila-Acapulco route used Manila hemp. The original pirates and privateers of the Caribbean used Manila hemp too.
OW I can relate! we are from Bicol, my father with relatives do this extraction "hagot" of abaca hemp/ fiber (called Manila hemp...) for a living in 1960's... The Philippines is the #1 exporter of abaca or manila hemp which is more popularly produced into ropes which is one, if not the strongest ropes used in ships.
Many products are produced from abaca too, from papers to bags, home decors and stuff.

This is the main fiber used to make paper bills but on the higher notes now they used polymer.

@@DANDJREACT A thing to keep in mind about owning property here; Foreigners cannot "own" land (other rules may apply for business). Of course, if you marry a local, NOW you can, as long as she is the primary land owner, such as she owns 51%, and you own 49%. Which is the way my own household works. I can own the house, car, etc...but not fully own the land. It is done for obvious reasons, so foreigners cannot just walk in, buy up all the land, and then there is no Philippines left!
Abaca is Manila hemp, the fiber of which is made into textile used in the tradional Barong tagalog, men's traditional formal shirt/suit, but now also used in women's fashion wear. The fiber's versatiloty is endless, can be woven into hats, bags, decors/ornaments, etc. The straw is so strong that it's been used for twines and ropes even for maritime cordage before nylon was invented in the mid 20th century. Now it's used in various paper products like teabag, filter paper, paper bags and even banknotes😊

We have a few abaca in the backyard used to tie for bulks of harvested rice
You can use Abaca to make bags, hats, baskets and slippers. Before plastics, Abaca is basically use to handle and store stuff. You can also use Abaca to make furniture like chairs, beds, table, etc.

"Makusog", the word that Kulas uttered out loud as he was trying to use the sharp contraption is Visayan (one of the more than 100 languages and dialects of the Philippines - I think he is more comfortable speaking in Visayan than Tagalog), means "strong" or "malakas" in Tagalog. Well, you need to be strong (and become even stronger in the process) to pull that off and survive the rest of the day, every day doing that.
"Alaxan" is a brand of a pain reliever. Manny Pacquiao is one of their major endorsers.
Many Filipino young men in rural areas tend to have such rugged physique. All that walking, climbing, pulling, pushing and many forms of manual labour naturally do that to the human body. Even young lasses have great physique. But as one gets older and does less as the young takes over, the men also tends to drink more (hence the big bellies) while the women tend to lose their lovely shape to more motherly forms due to childbirth and the hard life taking care of the entire family and/or working in the fields as well.
Sometimes, in urban settings where life can be as much or even more challenging, some guys can be this ripped as well. Usually, they are the "kargador". The ones who do the heavy lifting like carrying sacks of rice/vegetables/fruits for deliveries; kilograms upon kilograms of fish and other seafood in the fish market; big buckets of water to provide to families in areas where there's hardly any water. If only they have access to the right kinds of and if there's always enough to eat, it would be great. But the hard life takes a toll. Bad habits in the metro learned by some likewise takes a toll. And soon, their health suffers.

Young men (not all) but in the province (rural areas) are usually ripped or lean, because of hard work in the farm. If you don't have machine, you physically use your whole body. I know this because I have many relatives in the rural areas and I can tell the difference of a person who's from urban place. I was born and raised in the city and when I went to rural areas, men look like they go to the gym regularly. Unfortunately, if you see men out of shape, these are the one who drinks a lot of alcoholic beverage (beer, and hard ones). In the rural areas, there is always TUBA (coconut wine). Coconut trees are everywhere in the rural areas. 😀

Let me explain if i could get it right.. since i am laughing to both of you for your question.. about ALAXAN. hahaha!!
The place Catanduanes is one of five parts of Bicol region(region 5) down south. (Naga City, Legazpi City, Sorsogon City, (i am from this city)Catanduanes and Masbate. Although Masbate is somehow partly there's visayan language, but they're still part of Bicol region.) The younger dude's body is shredded/ripped because of his daily routine job at the farm and most of all that kind of job toiling abaca. That is a natural gym exercise. Now, the Alaxan he said, is a part of the farmer's joke, but that is a kind of muscle relaxant pill if you really got a muscle pain. So it is running as a joke to the farmers if you are over worked. Actually, Abaca is a family of Banana, but it uses only for making it a rope and other things that could make from the strands. Catanduanes though is the center of typhoon every year that's why the abaca are all down as Kyle Jennerman or kulas of Becoming Filipino visit there. Kyle "Kulas" Jennermann aka Becoming Filipino made a history in the Philippines. His was taken to the Senate and was reviewed to become the first(I think) naturalized Filipino without having any lineage ties to the country. He was declared a Filipino Citizen last year because of his contribution to the country in promoting not only the nice spots in the Philippines but to be honest he went to the most unheard of corners of the country to help and show what beauty that Province is to offer. He showed what the other side of the Philippines to the world, not the fancy high rise buildings in the Metro or how fun the parties on the beaches could be but more of what the regular Filipino people lives on a day to day.

If exported, you may also know this as Manila Hemp.... ropes big and strong to moore down (tie) big ships at the dock... before nylon ropes were invented. There are other uses for the hemp fibers... clothes, bags, etc.

Abaca is highly used to make carpets, rugs, etc...and is also widely used to make ropes. Also, it is very resistant to salt water. Abaca plants look a lot like banana trees. Close resemblance. It's also very good for fishing nets and fishing lines. Very hard to break. The fishing line on my fishing pole is abaca! I bought it locally. They can also makes hats and stuff out of it. It has many uses as you can see. Put a few strands together, and you've got a cable!

Abaca is used to make Manila Rope which were used in mooring the ships. This is one of the main export products of Philippines before. Now abaca are replaced by Nylon and other synthetic fibers.

Many filipino men are shredded because most jobs require manual labor. For example, i witnessed men climb coconut trees to harvest coconuts with their own strength while carrying a sickle or machete to cut the coconuts. Or, if land needed clearing like tall grass or something a sickle or machete would be used to cut it down. All of this labor in sweltering humid heat. Its pretty amazing.
