This is the only song Chris has made a video for, he thought it needed to be said. You have done a service that most folks can't handle by spending so much time in the mental health field. People with that kind of compassion are rare and I imagine most burn out in half the time you stayed. Thank you

Unless you suffer from a mental health disorder or were born and raised into a situation where it’s just part of your life, you’ll never know the pain and long reaching effects it has on you. I pray that you don’t... it doesn’t make for an easy life. My man thank you for the years you gave trying to help ease some of these folks’ pain! You’re a great man!!!

My sister in law was bipolar. A few years back, she laid down for a nap and never woke up. She overdosed on prescription painkillers. The effects of bipolarism are horrible. When things are good, they're great. When they are bad, they are really, REALLY, bad. Hopefully this video will enlighten people. If you know someone who needs help, call someone! Help them!

I’m going to have to give you major props my man. It’s refreshing to see an actual mature and intelligent adult do these reactions. I do enjoy seeing the younger generation really enjoy the old school music and also near artist who are “old school”. But I enjoy you more because you are a music guy and not a “genre” guy. 99.9% of the time I agree with you’re commentary because you “get it” and you’ve lived enough and have been through harder times than the normal person. Yet you’ve preserved. My sister has depression and is bipolar. She’s been in institutions twice and has attempted suicide. With the help of family and people like you she’s steady gotten better. She has an amazing husband and family. One of my friends recently committed suicide because his Dr changed his depression meds which actually made him worse but no one knew until it was too late. This shit is serious and if anyone knows someone with either illness please do not ignore them. God bless you for addressing it.

Thank you for helping and being there for people like myself!!!!!! This video has hit VERY CLOSE to home for me as I have something like Bipolar. My Psychiatrist called it "Personality changes due to catastrophic trauma" she said that way other health workers would know that it was from my first 32 years of my life being terribly abused. We are honestly INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL for people like yourself and I think I might try a little harder to stay!!!!! God Bless you!!!! Gem xoxo

Mental health is what we strive for. Mental illness is what we live with. I've struggled for many many years and have come to realize that early childhood experiences mold and shape our lives forever, affecting decisions which further build on shaky foundations. Good parenting will someday be recognized (universally) for it's true value to mental health. It is tragic that there currently is no therapy that can undo damage that millions live with daily - doubt there ever will be. We continue to strive.

This video is one of those that really gets me. It feels so true to life that it’s painful, but at the same time, is very much needed. Mental health is one of those subjects that truly needs to be addressed more in media, and in ways that don’t demonize the person suffering from whatever mental health issue they are struggling with.
I grew up with so many people in my immediate family with pretty severe issues: bipolar (mom), PTSD (brother), addiction (dad), depression (all of us honestly) and anxiety (me). Not that any of us ever got help for those things, can’t let anyone know we’re not “normal”, you know? People would think we’re like those psychos in horror movies or something. I felt that way until I moved away from everyone and got some perspective and treatment for my issues.
Bless everyone who works in mental health. I can’t even fathom how much of a toll that takes on a person. I myself am a nurse and work in cardiac surgery, so I know personally the toll that working in medicine takes on a person, but I don’t know that I could ever work in mental health.

Thank you! And thanks to Chris. It's frightening how many people don't believe in mental illness...who think our behavior is a choice. Or that it's too scary or complicated, so they just basically ignore it. It's not a "visible" illness like a broken leg, and it's a chronic illness...you can be treated but never "cured". I was misdiagnosed for over 35 years. Looking back, I'm totally dismayed at the things I did and the bad choices I made, how much I hurt the people I love, and wonder how much different my life would have been, had I had a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. We all struggle in our own way and try to cope and too often the result is what we see in the video. It breaks my heart.

Thank you so much for your reaction to this. As much as I love Chris Stapleton, this will always be my favorite song of his and I don't think any other song he could do could touch it in my heart. The fact that this is the only song he's done a video for speaks volumes. This brings attention to mental health which unfortunately still has a stigma attached to it. I took care of my mom for as long as I remember (she went blind when I was in kindergarten and I gradually took over all the household duties and her care as she got sicker) and when she died 9 yrs ago my life got turned upside down. I had several people that tried to get me to get mental help but I didn't want to because of the way some people still see people that have issues. I'm lucky, some of my friends finally had a talk with me and got through. I've had ups and downs since then but I think it saved my life. I think that's why this hits me so much.

I hear where you're coming from. We have a lot in common. I was a nurse for 45 years, 20 of those in ER, and the last several years in a state psychiatric hospital. Both stories in this video are tragic. For her to fight, every day, the demons she likely knows are irrational but present, nonetheless. For him offering the only thing he could, his strength and love in spite of it all. I especially love the line in the song, "...pretend I'm a shelter for heartaches

This song and the song Either Way by Chris Stapleton are both my favorites and the ones I rarely listen to because they are so painful. They remind me of the relationship I had with my 1st husband and the father of my 2 sons. We were very happy and in love but he always was a heavy drinker. He kept it under control for the first 4 years we were married but then he just gave up and lost all control. He would be violent and abusive when he was very drunk. Then he began using drugs like crack. I left him just before our 10th anniversary. I had to get my kids out of that environment. My sons are both grown up now and are good men. Their Dad has gotten himself clean for the most part. I never stopped loving him but will never be in a relationship with him. Sometimes people hide their mental illness behind substance abuse. On another note: I also love E A Poe. There is a Poe museum near me in Richmond, VA. Check it out if you are ever in Richmond. God Bless!

I know I found you and this song WAY late, but I wanted you to know this song touches me so much because after my husband and I got married, (nearly 20 yrs ago) I suffered a major trauma which gave me a deep depression and I was suicidal. The only reason I’m here now, is because even though our marriage was pretty new, he stuck by me and saved me from myself. This video makes me cry everytime because I feel bad I put my husband in many situations where he had to save me, the only difference is he was never too late, and I eventually got better. I’m sad some people don’t have someone to save them.

exactly right. you dont have to know the person, and severe depression is not hard to spot. usually written all over someone's face, especially in the eyes when they look at you. get them help, offer them help, even if its just an ear to listen. even kind words of support are sometimes enough to break the darkness and show them there is light. it was a stranger that saved me. they didnt have to, but they did for me so i maybe one day can do the same. God wins in the end...everytime!

Bipolar disorder is an electrochemical imbalance that has some symptoms that manifest as mental health issues. It is a physical disease with a mental health component. Nearly everyone is impacted by depression at one time or another in their life. Mental health matters. The biggest thing I will say is no matter who you are, you matter. If you're experiencing something you can't handle alone get help. There is no shame. Everyone needs help from time to time. Thanks for your reaction and comments Michael. Appreciated.

Clinical depression is very different from "depression" Everyone has periods in their lives when they're down due to various things: the loss of a loved one, or losing a job...this is a natural, normal thing. But we get through it. True depression is when there really isn't anything "wrong", things may otherwise be fine, but you feel that deep darkness and it just stays. I liken it to being at the bottom of a deep, dark hole. You can't climb out. Just out of the corner of your eye, there's a door leading to stairs. You turn to go to it, and it moves...round and round you go, but it's always there...just out of the corner of your eye.

Wow I loved your reaction, subscribed straight away! You speak so eloquently about this subject, your job obviously left an impression on you. Having anxiety and depression it is very refreshing hearing someone speak so honestly about mental health and I'm sure you did save some lives in your job 💜

Whew! This was a tough one. It was gut wrenchingly real. Mental afflictions are not something people ask for, they don't make a choice like it's a flavor selection at Starbucks. The word is slowly creeping out and there are not as many stigmas attached, but far too many people are still slipping through the cracks. The prisons are full of people that might never have committed a crime if they'd had access to mental health resources. We, as a society, need to do better, to be better! ❤

Good reaction. I don't know but I don't think you write lyrics like this without having been there on one side or the other. I can't listen to this song very often cuz it gives me a lump in my throat and my eyes well up. ugh Great song and great way to bring attention to the issue. Good on you for all you gave to it. I used to work on an ortho ward and we got our share of it but we weren't trained to deal with it very much.

Mental health doesn't discriminate. This is the first time I've ever seen the official video for this song. It really hit home. I've never actually talked about it but I contemplated suicide. I texted the suicide hotline and decided to not be truthful because I didn't want anyone sent to my house. I had everything planned. How I was going to end my life. Had a specific time. Specific place. Had started writing letters to my son, my daughter, my father, and my ex husband. I've always believed everything happens for a reason. My son is the only reason I'm still here. It's almost as if he knew...

Trying to cope with mental health issues or interact with someone that has mental health issues is so hard to do but doing nothing is harder. I fight it every day and some days are okay and others are really bad but turning a blind eye is never a solution.

I wish my husband understood the meaning behind this song/video. He just saw her "being selfish". I am manic depressive and bipolar with adhd. Thank you for your reaction and your understanding words. 💜
