Just received my pico 4 coming from Q1 and I would say it is a big upgrade in everything except for software content and stability. Now having both headsets I have to say it's really close! The Pico has a slightly higher resolution but the Pro's optics and screens are just much better. The lenses on the Pico 4 are not bad at all just not QPro level. I'f I didn't have the QPro I would be 100% happy with the Pico 4 as a PCVR headset. Stand alone Quest2/QPro hands down! The FOV is actually MUCH closer than I would have thought, the QPRO has the edge here as to get the best FOV on the Pico 4 I had to crank the Pico 4 down quite tight to get my eyes closer to the screens, something the aftermarket can probably address. The colors and brightness the QPro also has the advantage by a good bit, HOWEVER unless you compare them back to back I would perfectly happy with the Pico 4! Now the intangibles...the QPro is just more comfortable, the controllers are much better, the passthrough is better, the build quality is better, it's more refined and polished. The Pico 4 is like buying a Dodge Hellcat...it's fast and you will have a lot of fun. But then the QPro is like buying a Porsche 911 Turbo. Also fast, but has that level of quality and refinement the Hellcat just never will. Can't go wrong with either top be honest. My personal choice the one I go back to is the Quest Pro for sure. I love the through the lens videos BUT I feel they don't really accurately convey what you can actually see. Which I am sure most people can guess :)

Owning the Quest Pro, and running a render resolution of 1.4x you do not see this SDE. At 1x Resolution the panles looks like it suffers with SDE. Just like the Quest home, it looks low res for this HMD.
PCVR is where the quest Pro really shines. Now running the Quest Pro at 1.7X Render Resolution, and using ODT with max bit 500Mbps and 3616 Encode Resolution width, you end up with something spectacular!
Admittedly you will need a 4090 to run at those settings, but I get a solid 45fps in MSFS with everything set to Ultra.

QPro user and while I cannot comment on the Pico, the QP is a quantum leap from the Q2. I actually can work using 3 massive screens and read everything using link. Using the immersive app I didn't feel it was as great but that's down to the wireless compression from the app. I expect they will nail that eventually. Finally, the comfort is on another level and not having to strap anything onto my cheekbones is a massive advantage. In terms of comfort, it's basically the psvr design which was awesome. The tracking of the controllers is also next gen, I have yet to miss a block in beatsaber. All in all, could be cheaper but it is the king ATM. I sold my Q2 and HP reverb G2 for this and don't regret it.

pico 4 colours are more natural than Q pro.
IRL this "red shift" coloring in the Q pro just DON'T EXIST.
Colours are just NOT saturated like this irl.
    Just look outside and compare.
In lone echo , if you watch carefully the right arm of the character at 9:54 , you can see that all the details in the black area are NOT visible in the Q pro, also the shoulder is far more detailled in the pico 4 , we can see all the carvings on the right blue shoulder cover, and look at the little badge on the chest , the round one , you can see that the circle arc on top of the rocket is more long than the one on the Q pro image.
All is too dark , the Q pro lacks contrast in comparison to the Pico 4 : Pico 4 wins for colors and resolution, despite what you say sebastian !

    • @marcdevries9027
      @marcdevries9027 Pƙed rokem +1

Especially in lone echo it looks like with the Q pro the contrast and vibrancy are far too high. Indeed losing details as a result.
But that could be as the maker of the game intended it to be. And the colors could be how they intended it to be.
And the unnatural colors in the canyon could also be someone intended it to be. Many people like too much contrast and vibrancy. (as all TVs in a shop also always have far too much of both and you have to reset them to a normal setting at home)
So I had a look at the lone echo trailer on a color calibrated screen. And then it becomes very obvious that the Pico4 is very close to the contrast and colors as visible in the trailer and the Q pro is way off.
So yes, I agree with you. Pico4 wins in that regard.

What I really want to see a comparison of, as at current the Pico 4 software is very limited when it comes to PCVR, and MRTV video comparison is based using Virtual Desktop in God-Mode to render at a higher resolution in the Pico 4. Is MRTV using default 1x resolution for the Quest Pro? If so then it is not really comparing Apples to Apples here.
Now having both HMD rendering and encoding/decoding at the same resolution will truely seperate the panels quality from both devices, and give a better Apples to Apples comparison.
As I mentioned in another comment, with a 4090, I'm running at 1.7x render resolution, ODT with max bit 500Mbps and 3616 Encode Resolution width. Comparing default to thise settings gives a very different experience, and is very playable with a 4090.

At the max settings, Quest Pro for image quality, colours, edge to edge charity is insane, with the best Lenses on the market right now.
Resolution isn't everything, as someone who has owned the Vive Pro 2, Vive Focus 3 and HP Reverb G2, commented on my forum post, saying how the Quest Pro is far superior in image quality and clarity.
Now taking it a step further you can run 1.4x pixel density on top of 500Mbps bit rate, 1.7x render resolution, and max out MSFS, getting your 4090 GPU usage to almost 100%, but you will be playing at around 35FPS, but this is god tier in clarity,
I have a video on my channel at 1.4x render, and in one of the comments is a link to a forum where I have posted images at 1.7x render maxed setting.

I like you guys, and here probably ppl will think that I am a Meta fanboy without even know if I got a Quest or not, but when you do this kind of comparison I am just disappointed... I do undertand that for a lot of ppl the price tag on the Pro was too much, overprice or hard to justify, but when compare two product we need to put this thing aside...
Saying something like "visually is better but 3 times better?" like if the 2 product are equal in hardware and the only difference is in visual. Quest Pro has a bunch of features missing in the Pico, off course the price is higher... you don't pay 3 times the price only for the visual, you pay for eye tracking, new chipset, face tracking, probably the best controller in the market, double camera for passthrough (even if it's actually not the best), double audio jack when Pico doesn't even have one.
I don't like when ppl just minimize the good thing of one product and increase the perception of the second one... in this comparison there is no match to be honest, the visual in the Pro are better and not for just a bit, it's like compare on OLED with a standard LCD, the LCD can be very good, and Pico in very good, but the difference is noticiable.... the contrast, black and vibrance of the colors are one step ahead in the Quest, the Pico is good thanks to the higher resolution, but all the color are wash out big time, why saying during the Pico part "it's amazing, fantastic, look at the quality" and with the Pro "yes, it's good, better, but are both amazing, are both very good" like to enphasise that they are equal, that one is amazing and the other one "good too" when is way better in any way... it doesn't make any sense to me.
and to be precise, if someone like more the visual in the Pico is perfectly fine, but on a simple visual comparison with data like color accuracy, contrast, black level the Pro is just way better

To be fair the pico does look great and is not really priced in the same league. If visuals are the only factor and don't want to spend a lot than the pico is great. If you read text with your eyes, its blutrty outside center
also you can seee the Fresnel rings on glass [they visible in this video]

Not said was it takes 2 hours to recharge it again no option to add a 3rd party battery for longer run times. The Pico4 Pro also has a built in battery as far as I know , no 3rd party battery add on also. I googled Pico4 Pro it's said to last 2 to 3 hours but it has fast charging the batteries are split so it charges 2 batteries together that in turn charges up much faster then the Quest Pro. Both headsets can't be worn for long periods of time. Where I have worn my Rift CV1 for up to 4-5 hours easily. My Quest 2 for up to 3 hours with the additional battery from the BoboVR M2 Pro. In fact, they are the only thing really going for the QP, aside from the controllers. Everything else is half backed or downright doesn't work. Do a search for The Verge's review of the QP and that about sums it up. People buying the QP and keeping it because it's great for gaming are wasting money. The Pico 4, although optically not as good - there is some distortion, but only a little and the panels are a bit washed out and not as bright. However, everything else is really very good. For the Pro to be worthwhile you definitely need to have a genuine usecase for most of its features. I have equal need for a standalone headset and PCVR gaming headset and previously have spent well over thousand pounds completing my VR experience with the last two headset generations.
It cost me ÂŁ1000 for a Quest 1 fully kitted out and a Rift S in 2019, and ÂŁ1250 for a fully kitted out Quest 2 and Reverb Get in 2022/21.
This costs only ÂŁ250 more than my Quest 2 and G2 combined and is sizeable upgrade over both, as well as also offering a slew of entirely new, expensive hardware features such as eye tracking, face tracking and mixed reality capabilities.

It simply cannot be used as they claimed. I've done various reviews on this. Yes it's great for PCVR, but it isn't that comfortable and the Index competes so well on the PCVR front, if you already have it set up. Other than that, you're paying for a Quest, with a chipset that is already out of date, with a resolutions that the Pico 4 beats and the PSVR2 also. He's a digital graphics professional specialising in VR and research and can break down advanced concepts such as stereoscopy and stereopsis, colour shift and panel technology at a level beyond what you get in typical CZcamsr reviews.
He can explain these concepts far better than I can but in short, the Pro's lenses are the best available for edge to edge clarity, focus across the whole visual field, no mura, correct stereoscpoy and 3D depth perception. The panels have quantum dot technology that allows for much higher dynamic range and contrasts, plus local dimming (not yet full enabled however) and the displays are one of the brightest on the market, I think only the Aero's is higher.

Both using VD. It's a fair comparison.

@@mixedrealityTV It's reasonable that you used VD for both. May have been fairer if you compared the QP using Air Link and proper Oculus desktop app and ODT settings. Anyway, not big deal since experienced Meta users already know this. Plus, I'd rather see you over-sell the inexpensive Pico 4 rather than over-sell the very expensive QP.

    @JAKOB1977 Pƙed rokem +2

The Pico4 is sharper, as it does have quite a lot more pixels.
6.9 mio in the Meta Pro vs 9.33 mio in Pico4... the Pico4 PPI is very high as it also claims on the box with 1200 Pixels pr sq. inch, though in reality its 1193.
but that is not always a good thing, at least for stand-alone titles... that is often Quest2 ports and a headset with merely 3.5 mio pixels..
Its taxing to run so many pixels that the Pico4 have.
and it also seems Pico4 is subsidizzing their VR headsets quite a bit and taking a siginificant BOM-loss on each unit, but that aint new.. Meta also did that, and its been more the norm than not on consoles.
But bang for buck, the Pico4 is offered at a very attractive price.
but the software also needs to match, and that is Pico's weakest aspect, and it sadly seems that many of the Quest2 ports to Pico4, does leave a lot to be desired,, and that wont fly,...Pico needs to make sure the ports are optimised, so it aint these second hand ports.
IMO, its really not up for debate..Pico4 at 430 Euro vs Meta Pro that is 1850 Euro here in northern Europe as Meta is selling it officially here in Denmark.
but the Pico4 enhanced sharpness from all these extremely small pixels goes a long way, and it also more welldesigned then Meta pro.
not a fan of the bay cant tilt and the lightblocker leaves a lot to be desired.. here Pico4 does a better job and the nose insert, seems to do a good job..
also a huge con that the RGB passthrue on Meta Pro is so bad vs Pico4 that clearly have a camera with higher res that gives a sharper result... that simply doesnt add up on a headset from Meta that is 430% more expensive 1850 vs 430
they both use that tacky old approach of using the B/W tracking cameras to create a depth gimmcik.. really extreme that Meta asks these sums and then dropping the most important sensor ToF or Lidar that are crucial for AR/MR and which you can clearly see on tje teardown were planned and have a huge area that it should have been, but in the last minute the ditched it and used the tacky tracking camera approach... cover your main RGB camera and you can see it simply B&W tracking cameras the two at the sides.. was the same approach why you could see passthrue on fx Quest2 even though it hadnt a dedicated camera.
Meta Promoted their Pro as an AR&MR unit, and its simply to weak comming second on passthrue pixelfedelity vs a VR headset to 430.
also dont like Meta IPDs adjustment.. simply to loose... here the Pico4 seemed like overkill with motor-driven IPDs with 28 positions, but quite nice that its locked and dont move
Meta Pro way to expensive for a headset who's main hardware advantage is the eye/face tracking, but one can hope that Pico4 very strong offer.. will result in Meta doing their homework with Quest3. at the end of the day, its good for VR with Pico comming out this strong with their Pico4 headset, so we dont again see such an overpriced mess like Meta Pro, where they ditched the most expcted sensor (time of flight, ToF) Meta needs to step up to the plate with Quest3.

I'm trying to replace my monitors with the VR headset for the productivity and sadly both are not enough for the clear text. Pico feels like a 27" 1080p and quest2-pro like a 32" 1080p monitor. I would take a hit to my wallet with the bigger more expensive Crystal but the weight makes it a no go unfortunately. Even an expensive VR headset is cheaper than 3 decent monitors but saadly there are no good options yet.

Quest Pro is by far more color-accurate to what all of those scenes are *supposed* to look like. The Pico 4 has far too much yellow veneer over everything.

I'm enjoying my Pico 4. I went from an Oculus rift and the doubled resolution of the Pico 4 is great, but I wish it was even higher. I can make out the pixel structure. I have very good eyesight. 6kx6k panels or higher will be amazing. I don't feel like I need better FOV. Resolution is the limiting factor for me now.
The cable of the old first gen Rift was what caused me to stop playing a few years ago. Wireless iss a game changer. Using wifi and setting stream bitrate to 72 Mbps looks amazing already. AX wifi can easily handle 4x the pixels over wifi.

is there no software on the quest pro to step down the saturation? If its streamed from a pc cant you take it down using nvidia settings?

IMO it is not saturation, but comparing to a relatively washed out display of the P4.

Turn the brightness down on the Pico, it is that simple. The resolution is more important; as the name suggests VIRTUAL REALITY.

Sold my vive pro 2 for $900 bucks and purchased a used like new quest pro for $500 bucks and its amazing. Okay I have a i7 10th gen and rtx 3080 the link cable sucks! Purchased a 50 dollar one and the game kept freezing after 5 minutes also it would stutter alot! Purchased the oculus link cable for 80 at best buy and it was the same crap seeing some stuttering artifacts, and the game would freeze after 5min. Finally purchased a 100Foot CAT8 ethernet cable from Amazon 40 bucks. I ran it from my wifi router thats all the way across my house to my gaming pc and launched airlink and it sucked! Lag was terrible đŸ˜Ș so I got Virtual Desktop and WOW blown away it works perfectly! You'd never know you were streaming the game it feels like its playing natively like pcvr not only that but its %100 better looking than my old Vive Pro 2. I love the clean image and everything looks crisp and colorful HLYX is a totally different looking game and the fact I can play without being tethered by a wire is awesome! I have Cox internet 500mbps speed wifi 5 router that supports gigablast. I see zero artifacts or compression using virtual desktop high setting bitrate at 150 the streaming codec I have set to Hevc 10 bit. I can walk to my living room far from my gaming pc and it still streams fine no lag and looks incredible. The only thing I dislike is the sound sucks and the docking station to charge everything bad design. Comfort is incredible no more pressure on my face only on tip of forhead but doesn't bother me at all.
I watch anime and movies on it looks amazing much clearer than the vive 2 was and much more enjoyable. I like that it has removable light blockers I dont use them that often I like the fact I feel connected to the outside world when I am watching a movie.
Anyone worried if the image is not going to be great you'll be blown away by the new pancake lens and just how good the local dimming and colors are on the quest pro. Okay I think I raved enough about this headset lol. You'll just have to take my word.
If you use it as a standalone its great but gaming performance still kinda sucks and if couse those ugly mobile graphics are trash. I haven't used AR yet but whatever. Also you get eye tracking and facial tracking kinda cool but I haven't tried it yet...
I also had the HP reverb g2 years ago thought it was trash windows vr sucks and the sweet spot sucks and the tracking. I really liked my vive pro 2 paired with index controllers it was awesome and looked the best and had a pretty good size sweet spot but was heavy couldn't play any fast paced games since the headset would slide around unless I tightent the shit out of it but that was uncomfortable after 30min to an hour I was worried the quest pro wasn't gonna look good but it looks miles better and the experience is better as well as the comfort. Thanks for reading.

It's fascinating to me how some people can think the Pico looks better than the Pro in any of these scenes, when it's clearly terribly washed out and lacks any contrast range. It's really just anti Meta talk.
If Sebastian had put up this same video and said the Pico's through the lens was the Quest Pro, and the Quest Pro through the lens was some new miniOLED display headset all the comments would be how great the blacks were and richer the colours compared to the washed out Pro.
The Pro's displays are vastly superior from a technological standpoint. They have Samsung's quantum dot technlogy for better contrast range and local dimming. To say the Pico's colours are better is demonstrably false and you won't find any serious reviewer or person who has both headsets say otherwise.

It's interesting just looking at the thumbnail. I believe these are the actual through the lens shots of either headset as the contrast and brightness looks better in the Quest Pro but the resolution looks better in the Pico. As a picture looking at this thumbnail in CZcams I feel the Quest Pro is better visually, it's more striking but probably in reality the contrast won't be as important when you're immersed in the experience and you'll enjoy the higher resolution of the Pico more, anyway I guess we'll find out when this airs soon. ✌

I've not tried the Pico 4, but I have the Quest Pro and a Reverb G2 and had a Vive Pro 2 with 2448 x 2448 per eye. The Quest Pro's overall visuals are much better than both of those headsets despite the lower resolution. The overall visual experience is fantastic for PCVR. I'm only playing wired though, not using VD.
