- Stay tuned for the next video where we see exactly what was damaged in the Wagon. It's amazing the rods weren't hanging out of this after 2 passes with no oil pump belt on.

Dont tell Cletus that you can make a full pass without oilpressure on the SMX no problem.
😂😂😂 Steve should be taking Cleetus SMX apart right after sickweek for line 2line coating. We all know Cleet will put it to the test with no oil at some point😮😢😢
😂😂
Never seen Steve smile so hard..he really loves his wife ❤
It is so awesome seeing Kyle work with his mother. What a great family you have Steve.
That thing ran 2 passes with serious horsepower and had minimal damage. That's quite impressive, says a lot for that engine and it's components.
I can just imagine that sick feeling in your stomach, when you know you just made 2 runs with zero oil pressure.
Massive respect for your commitment and dedication to racing.
"I figured if Kyle's gonna drive the car, now's a good a time as any" .... unknowingly said at probably the absolute worst time possible for anyone to be driving that car xD. AND to be totally fair, it was a flawless 8th mile pass even then.
Then -> "My Son Blew Up My Promod in 7 Seconds" LOL!
actually the best time for Kyle to take it for a spin!! LOL Now Steve can give him endless crap about blowing up his wagon the first time he gets to drive it...we just wont bring up the fact that Steve must not have the most important warning light gauge on his display!
The fact you even got through that first burnout without oil pressure is actually amazing! lol
You mean two burnout and two passes and driving all the way back to the pits
@@user-iz4zj6qe5m No, I mean most cars wouldn't of even made it to (let alone through) that first burnout, alone, without oil.
Perhaps a Red warning light on the oil Pressure
@@64C10Claymore Ye, I was kind of surprised that even without an auto cut, they didn't have at least something on the dash to make the driver aware of oil starvation.
I guess though, you don't think you need it, till you need it (especially with something that's had otherwise flawless reliability).
lets just wait till we see if theres any top end damage or exploding parts when he does the next few runs before we start dishing out too much praise or criticism. Working on engines for 4 decade now ive never seen anyone fully get away with running with A. No oil or a lack of. B. No oil pressure at all for anything over than a brief time.
Massive Lorry/Boat/Locomotive diesel engines can take it but thats about the only ones ive came across that do. Never heard anyone say "yeah see that engine i ran without oil, its done another 100k miles mate" 😂
Few guys would admit when they make mistakes so others don’t, much respect for guys like Steve helping us not take for granted the importance of double checking our work
neglegence is different though. I never subbed D-Sparks mate im not watching destruction for the sake of it content. Steves the man but this is a bit of a dodgy one. Bit vague on his resons for the pressure sensor not being working or tunrned on. Was that because it didnt like one of his new additives/coatings? Steves not usually so vague but maybe because he just doesnt know yet.
@@bigduphusaj162 Steve literally said he had not turned on the safety and it was his bad etc (12:50) How is that too vague for you ?
@@bigduphusaj162 He was not chasing a engine issue or power issue, he was focused on 60 foot and tyre shake, I have done the same tunnel vision on a problem I know and not looking for something i don't know. In my case I was focused on a crank sensor problem and missed a dropping fuel pressure (so turned all those traces off so I could see) and I even had a spare pump with me!
If I had have had a low fuel pressure safety... No-one was more disappointed than myself at missing one thing I usually look at every run being fuel pressure and injector duty cycle.
Put money on the fact suspension travel, wheel speed, driveshaft speed, shift points, boost curve, launch RPM, GForce and timing were the focus of the problem he was trying to solve.
@@WaDahDahDang Between the driver (his son )working in a high end engine shop and Steve not noticing no oil pressure after the first run? WTF? Maybe he should stop trying to tune. Hopefully Cleetus lets Pete build him a Billet BBC after this SICK week adventure. Because SMX rarely make the trip.
@@hdogjones1845 Big and expensive mistake on his part, and we get to see it all. Not sure how you make the jump from my comment to talking trash about SMX engines ? Doesn't Tom Bailey run an SMX ? Will be interesting to see how Cleetus goes.
We need an orgin story for val!!!!! To be out of drag racing for 25 years and to hop right back in is extremely cool.
100% love watching the whole family out racing together. Steve is living the dream !!
He’s done that!
Watch more, SME!!
It's a blower car.. nothing to spool
@@Rob_Moilanen spool what? It´s a belt driven blower so the only way to get higher boost is higher rpm or change the pulleys
@@Rob_Moilanen There's a build series on this car, so you can watch exactly what they put in the car. And they explain in this very video the cause of it. If you had taken the time to actually watch the whole thing properly, you'd know why it's doing what it's doing.
Kudos for not blaming anyone but yourself for not having an oil pressure safety!
Shocking just how good the bearings looked for zero oil pressure for the amount of run time with burnouts/etc. I assume roller cam bearings so that should be good, however the valvetrain and turbos running that amount of time without oil is concerning. Steve is one hell of an engine designer/builder, and obviously has worked his sack off for the past couple of days and still has the energy to try and get something together for the event, my hats off to you.
The fact it didn’t immediately explode after the first full pass just shows how well built the smx is. That’s extremely impressive.
Speaks to the bearing coating, bet he doesn’t regret spending that money
Way to go Kyle and Mamma!! Steve is so proud of her and Kyle is looking out for her with his "you did the right thing, getting out of it" comment. What a great family and the malibu is such a sweet build!!!❤❤❤
I'm 60 and have had 60+ street/strip or track only cars, with power from just over 300hp to twin turbo cars with well over 2000hp. I've never even HEARD of an engine that survived so much as a single burnout without catastrophic failure with no oil pressure. Whatever you're doing. You're doing it incredibly well. Don't sweat not noticing the oil pressure (or lack of it). We all get wrapped up in the mass of things happening in the moment. Whatever coating you are running on those bearings, and Whatever lubricant you are running, I want to know, and I'll be switching to it. That engine surviving is THE most impressive thing I've seen in 45 years of racing. Above all, thanks for always, consistently sharing the real truth of what happens in your racing operations. Because of how honest and transparent you are, I literally never miss a single one of your videos. Keep doing what you're doing.
Amen!
watch his recent video "70+ psi, what to do?". He talks about all of the prototyping he's doing with coatings on internal parts
Steve, you make me smile so much when I see your interactions with your wife. The Morris family rocks!
Agreed, He is such a great role model for all of us dad's and husband's as well as a great example of how to be humble.
Always admitting fault, never hiding mistakes. Thanks Steve. Admirable. 👍👍👏👏👏👏
Kyle gonna have SMX nightmares for a year.
na, he will just have good ammo to tease his dad about not having the most important gauge on display or a safety cutoff in his programming! LOL
I heard what you said about the oil cut out in the software . Me and dad had a Red trailer light to a low pressure switch that would come on and you could not ignore it . Saved at least one of our engines from damage . Would be nice to have a non software based backup for something so important .
Tell Val to keep her hands on the wheel, especially with that violent 1-2 shift and reach up for the shoot later in the the run..! Excellent job, and nice looking and running car. Lets go Val..!!
Glad to see Val enjoying herself. Good luck Sick Week
Oh man I feel for Kyle, first rip in dads car and this happens
No problemo, mi amigo. His dad is a repairman. He has an awesome set of tools.
I know that feeling all to well. Back in the late 80s, my dad had an 19ft fishing boat that I was never aloud to drive, ever. out with him one day noy catching much mostly just riding around, he looks at me an says you wanna try an drive, I said hell yea..... he kind of grinned an a little chuckle. he stops the boat we trade places .I put it in gear give it some throttle an away we go. pops says hold the throttle about 2500 rpm on course what ever. right o daddy o I say, we were cursing along about 5 min later an kaboom . what the hell was that we turned around just in time to see the dog house come back down. he looks at me an says what the hell did you do to my boat. Apon tare down we found that the cam gear was made of pressed particle board an the gear was fatigued enough it just blew apart........not my Falt
.......but he never let me drive the boat again............
Sheez @@laurafreeze2861
@@laurafreeze2861 wow - a $1500 fishing boat doesn’t compare to a $250k+ Pro Mod .
Man if that was my father back in the day when he raced and i drove the car than it breaks i would have gotten screamed at all the way home lol. They fidnt have the data logs to save me in the 80's 😂
I'm not going to lie....I had to cut to the wagon going down and what's the outcome before I watched Val make her passes...but now I can go back and see it again and support Val. Steve you SMX is a wonder of the world....going that long without oil psi!!! Yeah I'm buying a SMX if I win the lottery...I'll worry about what it goes in later! Lol. Good luck Morris fam
I dig how you push through things even when a mistake is made. Right on and good luck next week!
I can't believe that you made 2 1/2 passes without oil press and the engine isn't completely toast. That's amazing. Shows the true craftsmanship of this engine.
I had a bad feeling something bad was going to happen when I saw how severe the tire shake was... I thought you were going to break some kind of driveline part... I could damn near feel the tire shake in my chest... Good luck Steve do what you do now and get it back going
I'm not a mechanic or racer, I build sound systems. I've learned a lot watching Steve, like how to stay cool as a cucumber when problems arise on the job.
I enjoy these documented journeys of the ladies on sick week. Last year it was fun watching EJ and the gasser learn with Sam. Now we'll watch Val get reacquainted with the drag strip with her son.
With all the technology in the car it would make sense to set up a safety where the engine won't run for more than 5 seconds with under "X" oil pressure. Sorry for the loss, I don't blame him missing it, far too many other things on his mind just driving the car.
Don't know why Steve didn't have the safety turned on in the ECU. Kind of a stupid mistake.
I agree. Exposed oil pump belts ion expensive race engines seen like such a big risk. Most of the competitors seem to put the cars together in such an insane rush before the events that missing things must be inevitable. A check list with things as critical as oil pressure safety systems on it would seem a good idea.
He has the money to build it 20x over. He doesn’t care
Money aside… we all know Steve doesn’t want to be pulling that engine hours before Sick Week starts…
@@dnunley423ridiculous attitude. You must not realise a Race car cannot Race if it's sat there in the pits with a hole in the block. You effectively have the worlds most expensive paper weight at that point and unless you are a Top Fuel outfit and have 10 spare engines in the trailer you are in trouble huh.
It shows you how good that line to line coating really is.
Sorry Steve, but I had to fix my spelling mistake. Also, I was just going to send the pistons for my Subaru out to Line to Line. However, after seeing this video I'm going to send them bearings as well.
hmmm how have you deduced from this that the line2line coating has done anything? The bottom end will always get some oil on it you rarely dry that out with pump failure. I think Steve needs to explain why the pressure sensor wasnt working or turned on. Was it off for a reason? was the reason that some coating hes poured in has messed his sensor up? Just hold back there on the praise mate till we see whats going on
@@bigduphusaj162 sensor was on, since he could see it in his logs. i'm really surprised the ecu screen doesn't flash a mega alarm when the pressure drops to 0. there's gotta be something like that in the ecu's software he's using, i'm sure (or hope).
@@bigduphusaj162 Did you LISTEN to the video? He says he's never had the shutoff turned on for the last couple years, which was his own mistake for not setting up. I would have expected at least an alarm light or something to pop up with those fancy digital screens.
@@FastSS02 You got it!
Say it Steve........"I LOVE RACING!!!!!"
How cool is that. Having your mom take the iron down the track while dad works on the wagon. Awesome.
Its amazing that you ran 2.5 passes, burnouts and drove to pits
I’ve engines blow up just driving a car between bays in a shop with no oil pressure.

Unbelievable that motor didn’t have parts exiting on that pass! Appreciate your honesty on the oil pressure debacle, it happens, you had a lot of different things going on which takes your focus away a little. The Malibu looks like it’ll be a fun car once you guys get it sorted out. Entertaining watching you work through getting it dialed in.
There's no excuse for that.
@@revolutioniscoming yea it’s hard to understand when your running stuff at that level your not going through start up checks but, at the end of the day its a mistake and that’s ultimately how we learn to be better at everything we do. Sometimes mistakes are free other times expensive, as long as we learn they are a valuable part of progress either way.
@@revolutioniscominghe gave a perfect excuse
It’s great seeing the whole family involved and working together, that’s family friendly entertainment!
I am so glad you shared this video with us, there are so many things going thru my mind, 1) As a racer I total understand how something so simple can go unnoticed, racing is all about hard work and overcoming so many obstacles, I know what its like to put the rods in the pan on a burn out because the oil pump pick up broke in half and at other times have the most amazing days of racing. Things can get hectic. 2) I really love how this is a family affair, 3) Kyle has some skills. he was on a pass. 4) Racing is never a linear progression, one step forward requires 3 steps back. 4)I cant wait to see this wagon back in action soon.
2 hard pulls with no oil pressure? we all need that oil.
nahh we all need our pressure and level sensors to work is all 😂
Sugar Momma's shifter is too far back
The smile on her face shows how much she missed racing!!
Great job guys!!!
Cheering for you from Muskegon!!!
Momma is a driver for sure she was extremely consistent
How do you not check oil pressure gauge each time starting car smh
no shit
I blew up a tractor when I was younger helping out my dad by changing the oil, only I didn't put enough back in OOPS
This is a much larger OOPS!!
I noticed Kyle is very respectful when he's talking about what to do to the car to get more power into it he watches how he words things to his mom great job Kyle
Great to see Mrs Morris running well. You never lose it! If anyone can fix the wagon Steve and Clark can.
Solid motor. Lasted that long with no oil pressure
He had five minutes of driving to look at a gauge lol too funny
Kyle Morris is a cool cat. That whole family seems super cool and down to earth.
Well done Val. Good on you Kyle, love seeing you encourage your Mom. I cheered her 9 second pass.
I spent way to much time explaining to idiots talking out of their ass about the smx saying he hurts them all the time it's not a good engine blah blah blah😂.. thank God the kind of people that talk dumb like that are never going to be in the market for something like this anyway so their opinions mean nothing to anyone that matters... First of all Steve trees all the new things on his personal engine before anyone else's so yeah he's going to come across parts that don't meet his expectations.. he's even testing new coatings on the Pistons in This one .. and the big failure he had in the old engine was from trying a new rod... But if you actually use your common sense and think about how many of these engines are out there doing just fine you'd think people could figure it out.. when you race at this level you're going to hurt stuff regardless of what you have especially if your oil pumps not working because the belt came off that will hurt even them Almighty LS that everybody talks about... That would hurt your Geo Metro on the way to the store if it ran the same way... I just don't understand why people comment on a topic if they don't know anything about it... Asking a question is fine but trying to be a smart-ass when you don't know the first thing about racing at this level just makes you look stupid to the people that do and no one takes you seriously... murder Nova and Justin swanstrom Both sent cranks out the bottom of their billet engines and they were two completely different brands go figure .. guess proline and noonan cant build engines now 😂... Nope they can and do build great engines too but like I said when you're pushing things past 4000 wheel horsepower you're going to hurt stuff whether you like it or not Steve is just one of the very few rare builders that share everything good or bad..
It happens to the best of Steve. Sometimes we get a little too comfortable or something and just don’t do what we should do.
Way to kick ass Val!!!💪💪😎 I'm pretty sure that at 13:00 i made my decision to have my machine work and engine with done at SME. That's pretty damn honest and humble of ya to own up to that huge mistake, Steve. Honestly, honesty is extremely rare these days. How could ya not trust Steve with piston and cam selection, dyno, and setup for your own engine, guys?
Great stuff, thank you Steve and GET SUM💪💪😎🇺🇲
Those SMS engines are tough!!!
Way to go Val!!!
Your awesome!! 🖐🤠👍
Only stupid when you let thing happen again. It's amazing how we remember things when a mistake was made.
My question is, why isn't there a safety shutoff for low/no oil pressure
Or even better, have an oil pump that isn’t driven by a belt that can fall off during tire shake 🤦🏻
He has one it wasn't being used. I'm sure it will be in the future.
Guess I should have waited until the end to comment, good thing you know an engine builder 😁 true testament of the oil and engine!

Ok, first sorry about the wagon. I'll come back to that. But how friggin cool is your ol' lady? God Bless her for getting back in the seat. She improved very rapidly and with your son running crew chief she put down a 9.9! What a great family you have there. I could not be more impressed. Ok, if the thrust bearing is all that is hurt, that would make you the luckiest man on the planet. However, if it has welded itself to the crank... that could be bad, even if you are able to remove it. Fingers crossed it goes your way. Love up on that woman, she is a keeper.
