- The first iPod is 18 years old- and I picked one up a bit ago. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it wasn't as easy to get it up and running as a modern device, so in this video let's go over the steps necessary to make the iPod completely usable!

@History Mojo 2 she's pretty good. I actually got her an iPod like this one once

That's what happens when you buy an apple product 😂
Studio 2 No, it’s because FireWire hasn’t been supported by anyone in years, and the iPod is old enough to vote.
And that has never changed with Apple products.
Linton I’m not saying it doesn’t happen today, but this ipod is such an old device that this crap is to be expected with any product from 2000 on any device. And he didn’t even have to mess with drivers or software or anything.
And dongles
My seven year old found my 4th gen iPod, charged it up, and has been listening to 4,000 songs that I loaded the thing up with 14 years ago.
I feel like this is synonymous to crate digging for vinyls
Thin Blue Line I asked him what he liked and he said “I really like Bill Evans, De La Sol, and Pearl Jam.” So I think it’s working.
I found my mom's ipod nano 4th gen
He might be interested in his (or her?) grandparents' LPs and 45s.
What storage is it? Are those low bitrate MP3s or is it a 60 gig model?
"I don't own any songs on iTunes"
yes yes, we were definitely all paying for the music we put on our first gen ipods.
Weird thing is nobody actually OWNS songs on iTunes: _If you buy a digital music track or album from the iTunes store or one of its competitors, you don't own it. ... If you buy a digital album from an online service such as the iTunes store, Amazon MP3, or eMusic, you have no legal right to lend that album to a friend, as you could if you had purchased a CD_ . It sounds nuts but those are the terms & conditions😲

Do people actually say “smallass”
@Asura the original iPod shuffle is the stick. You probably have the second gen shuffle
MK YX OH MY GOD, 512 MB isn't enough to fit more than 75 songs.
My iPod nano has sat on my iPhone dock for 6 years Untouched. It’s covered in dust and it’s like it frozen in time. I think it’s 8 GB. I’ve got an iPod classic too which is in my drawer and the original stored away in my wardrobe with my old home laptop the PowerBook G4. I’m glad my dad kept all this stuff.
My fandroid alarm is going off.

haha...I was thinking the same thing.
Think about this: There were 22 years between the releases of the Sony Walkman and the iPod.
There are 18 years between the release of the iPod to now.
This means that, in the year 2023 (in 3 and a half years time) *the iPod would be as old to us as the Walkman was when the iPod came out.*
I wonder what novel and likely even more locked down music player will come out in 2023

Right there with you. I took pictures during the process of the connector and even how the original iPod icon loads up into MacOS, not just in iTunes. It's cool they've not only left those older assets within MacOS, but they were upgraded for Retina Displays as well.
when he said 18 year old piece of tech I thought he was referring to hinself for a second
This also works for Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)
You’ll need:
-FireWire 400 to 800 cable
-FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter
-Thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter
Voila! iPod!
There are also Thunderbolt 3 docks which have firewire ports.
Is there a way to adapt the thunderbolt to standard usb?
He said "some exceptions"
@@Z64sports I think there are Firewire to Usb converters/cables.. but I'm not really sure..

i hope it was at least the v6 if he's doing all that because if he has the upgraded model then he's def. crazy😂
Many Canadians live mere minutes from the border. Considering the shipping cost difference between Canada and the US can be tens of dollars, it definitely makes sense.
Ty C. The v6 doesn’t exist anymore
it would’ve only been about an hour drive for him anyways
I love when we bring mp3 player and phone as separate devices
Some people still do that. I've seen rich kids with an iPhone for phoning and an iPod touch for music.
Heck, I still use my iPod Mini (made 2004). Most AWESOME MP3 player ever created. Easy to fix, play, and Linuxed (Rockboxed) it. Absolutely love it, and wouldn't use anything else.
“This iPod is full of quirks and features”
DOUG?
Completely unrelated to this video. Awesome reference though. :)
Doug is the best
@@91Tech Oh yeah!
i can't tell you how groundbreaking the first iPod was when it came out. What was more impressive was the first "in-ear" earphone they made you buy separately. Thanks for working so hard making this video, really brought back some memories. This thing single-handedly killed the mini-disc player.
i had one of these. it was a life changer. the thing had like 2gb (or 1.5?) of space. so much music you could jam in there...before i used to walk around with a god damn diskman and like 20 CDs in my backpocket. i get so nostalgic just seeing it (i even remember the exact font it used for the display like it was yesterday )
"Quirks & Features" not used to hearing Dougs signature line in a video like this. Nice~

I recently found my old iPod 5GB and it still works. Battery holds still for some hours. It's a great pleasure to use it today.
Back in those days, didn't need a protection case. It was built like a solid brick.
Easy though, conventional hard disk drives are more susceptible to failure from head crash if dropped at the wrong moment.
Nothing like using the original can never be replaced or forgotten (well maybe forgotten)
I still have a 2012 160 gig classic.
I also used 3G, 4G, video, and color iPod's over the years.
Most of those had terrible battery lives
Ha, tell that to my 3 hour standby battery life
wtf i dont remember apple releasing a 160gb ipod classic in 2012, that is very weird imo, the last ipod classic was released in 2007 i think

@@mihailoaleksic3330 Yes, it was available until 2014.
This iPod is older than a lot of people in CZcams comment section I swear.
It's older than I thought it was, I was born only 7 months before its release.
Yep !
Not me I’m 23 😭
I’m 9-10 months older than it 🙂
I'm older than it by only a few years. Didn't know it had a mechanical click wheel until reading it today and looking up more info.
The original was a couple years past my time. I remember in grade 8 when iPods were getting big but a lot of people still had MP3 players of other companies before apple took over the entire market. Some people in my class had the iPod mini which was huge, the shuffle and one or two of the rich kids were lucky enough to get the iPod nano for Christmas during the year it was first released.
I still use my iPod classic I love mine, I’m happy to see someone else who has one
Lol FireWire was cool for the time. I feel really bad for you, having to use it. I knew, as soon as you said FireWire and you couldn't find a port, I knew it was FireWire 800
It sucks...
Yeah FireWire was really great in 2002
Well 2001 for the iPod he has
To be fair 10 bucks for a FireWire 400 to 800 cable is pretty afordable.
@@joetheoriginalclark it's cheaper then buying a lightning cable.
There’s a lot of great recording interfaces that use firewire
Excellent job. I’ve got a Classic 160GB 6th Gen. First Apple product I got, got it just before the iPad 4th Gen and iPhone 5. Still works well, seven years later. Battery life is a bit rubbish, but I mainly have it docked into a hifi with an old 30 pin connector onboard. I always preferred the Classic over the other iPods. Storage means more songs. And high quality as well. Kinda got superseded when my iPhone storage matched and surpassed its storage. But still, an absolute gem of a device.
The battery isn't that hard to replace, the back is just held on with clips and the battery is very lightly glued. iFixit has some parts and guides on it
I've never been a fan of Apple... I was one of the few that had a zune instead lol. Ironically I'm writing this on an iPad 2!
Ah the zune

I love a good quality Walkman, and with the indie scene going crazy on releasing on cassette tapes, that would be cool. Also I had the iPod with the red lit 4 keys and touchwheel. I want it back.
Thanx for taking the time to share this info. I’ve wanted to mess around with one of these for a while now, and you have probably saved me a lot of heartache and frustration.
You missed showing how to scroll to the "extras" menu and then choosing "Game". You would have been hooked on playing "Breakout" in no time (at least I was back in 2001...)
@@timoarrg My bad. I missed that. Cool! I tried my 2001 iPod last year and incredibly it still works with my G4 iBook: czcams.com/video/FnJCmZO9EKw/video.html
Believe it or not i'm still using ipod classic (2006) upto this very day, the only apple product that i bought. Very well made product.
All I need is a turntable, transistor radio and 8 track player and your antique shop will be complete.
Im sitting here during quarantine2020 and just thought, hm I wonder what the first ipod was like. And here I am having that question answered in an entertaining and informative fashion. What a time to be alive!
I had a 3rd gen iPod classic when they first came out. The one with the 4 capacitive buttons at the top. Loved that thing.
Steve jobs was a "Guinness " and really innovated how we listened to music. Great video man that was a process for that ipod.
Personally I think an iPod is still a great investment. It's not like people actually like/remember every song that passes on their Spotify Playlist & the apps not only cost money but they take up phone space.
At least a high end MP3 player would suffice.
The original iPod price has gone up since it’s now 20 years old
I love how you explain things! Super eloquent and funny at the same time.
My dad has an iPod from the early 2000’s and he used it as recently as a few years ago.
He has so many metal/rock songs on there it’s insane because he’d just have it plugged into his car and we’d jam out to every song.
I used my PSP for music. A small bonus when using a PSP is that it had built in speakers. They weren’t very loud but compared to built smart phone speakers of today they worked great. I did get an 128gb iPod at one point but got it wet like an idiot.
I still have my pod is in a box in my closet and sometimes I open the box just to remember good times you know but now and thanks You I know how to use my pod in this days so cool man. Great video :)☺️👍
Been an Apple user for 25 years. I owned the very first click wheel iPod, purchase shortly after release . Loved it. Watching this makes me wish I still had it!
This is one of your best video! I did an upgrade to my iPod 5.5. It has 128 gig flash drive. And it works!
I wonder if you can do something like this for the iPod Nano.
Edit: not sure if it was 3rd gen or 4th gen
I own an ipod classic 120gb still holds up well today .
I never had one but my cousin did. I thought it was coolest thing ever. I’m glad you got yours working, his doesn’t even charge anymore.
Love it. It’s a simple device. Good way to listen to music without the distractions.
i still use this exact model (installed a biger harddisk) today
Remove the hard disk and flashmod the thing.

I bought mine in 2006 and still functional (gonna have to switch out the battery soon). Use it almost everyday in my car.

What a beautiful piece of tech.
I started using an iPhone 3G for a year, I actually quite enjoyed the simplicity of it.
apple: making plugging things in difficult since 2001
Gerrad Reynolds lightning jack seems pretty straightforward
@@benkenon but they keep coming up with their own cords that dont work with anything else so you have to buy overpriced apple stuff
Gerrad Reynolds because they are a publicly traded for-profit company. Apple wants customers who don’t have a problem with spending money, not penny-pinchers. And they use proprietary connectors because of quality control. Lightning, unlike USB-C, has no maybes. You plug in and go to power up, sync data and to play music through certain cars and stereos. A given USB-C cord may or may not support all of those things, and there are no industry standards for it.
@Ben K. Then the "U" in USB (Universal Serial Bus) isn't really universal after all when it comes to USB C. Apple's cables are even less universal, as they only work on Apple devices.
The Computer Nerd but they always work the same, as long as they’re Apple certified. Lightning connectors always behave as expected. There are no surprises.
Some nice 4k quality you got there.
Damn this video brought back some memories. My first iPod was a 2nd Gen Nano, but I could still relate. Awesome video dude!
I had a metallic green iPod (not so) Mini. The clickwheels were so satisfying to use !

Definitely a blast from the past to me! I recall being in elementary school when the original iPod came out. Never owned one but definitely seen them around!
And yes, it would be great if you can make more videos about this device! Party like it's 2001!
Aww, 2001 is the year my brother was born😃
Hey man, I'm trying my 1980s Walkman. No need to plug it in to update.

I had one of these from new - it was really incredible for its time. the actual spinning wheel was so great to use - but it could get sand in it at the beach and get all gritty. It was well made enough that it usually worked the grit out eventually. Great product. Lasted years and years, almost all the way to iphones. I still have it in a box somewhere.
Even though I was born in 2007 and my first devices were a Wii and iPhone 5s, something feels so nostalgic about the 1st Gen iPod even though ive never seen one in person!

I’ve been using the same 5th gen iPod in my car since I got my drivers License in 2006
I've also been using my 5th gen iPod for about that long! I had to replace the headphone jack at one point because the left channel wouldn't work unless the headphone cord was bent just right. I switched out the faceplate and click wheel after damaging them from running into the corner of a table at full speed. And a few years ago the hard drive gave me the dreaded death clicks and died on me completely, so I replaced it with an SD card reader and now have a lighter (honestly took a long time to get used to the weight difference!) iPod with double the storage capacity.
I'm keeping this undead monstrosity going as long as I can and loving every moment of use. More convenient than using my phone in the car because I can operate it by feel and keep my eyes on the road.

This iPod got me into the Apple ecosystem. I bought the Bondi Blue iMac, Cube G4, iBook and so on. I got in on eBay from a user in L.A. and was sad I had to sell it when I upgraded. Back then I had to always sell my stuff in order to afford upgrading. Now older, I'm collecting everything all over again. Just found an iPod locally and picking it up after watching this video and bringing back the memory. Plan on using it with my 2008 Mac Pro. Thanks for the useful information.

This video is WAY better than any previous video. The fact that you show talk in front of the camera is a HUGE step forward. I know its embarassing to show your face in a CZcams video, but it makes it so much better. Seeing someone talking combined with some other footage makes the video better. Also, good job wearing that Canucks hoodie
I have a 2nd gen iPod with RockBox and it's just awesome! It's nice to be able to listen to music distraction free when studying, and it's really nice quality too (plays FLACs no problem)
You should install a Compactflash card in there
That HDD WILL die, and is way more fragile with spinning disc storage
I bet it would help improve battery life too, since flash storage isn't moving parts.
