  • Morris Gleitzman’s "Loyal Creatures" is performed during the Memorial’s Learning workshop ‘Anzac War Horses’ for primary and secondary students. The monologue is a creative catalyst for exploring themes of the First World War.
‘When I wrote Loyal Creatures I hoped this story would find a place in the hearts of many people. I’m very pleased that this has happened. What I didn’t dream is that the story would be invited into its true home, the Anzac Memorial. I’m delighted, on behalf of the horses and troopers that the story seeks to honour, that Loyal Creatures is part of the new Anzac Memorial Learning Program’.

Frank is a bullish bush kid, of a size that belies his tender years. His mother has passed away and he lives a hard-working life with his father.
War has broken out and Frank is desperate to enlist, despite being underage, but his father refuses.
One day Frank’s father receives a white feather in the mail, a signal of cowardice from the community, and gives in to Frank’s requests on one condition. They go to war together.
In the deserts of Egypt and Palestine young Frank experiences all the adventure he ever wanted, and a few things he wasn't expecting. Heartbreak, love and the chance to make the most important choice of his life. From Gallipoli to the famous charge at Beersheba, through to the end of the war and its unforgettable aftermath, Frank's story grows out of some of the key moments in Australia's history.
