A Symphony Of Steam - The Greatest Sounding Steam Locomotives In The UK !

- In this video we take a look and listen to my best acoustical recordings which have been captured on video with the uninterrupted pure sound of steam engines at work. Every scene has been chosen carefully to showcase the sight and most importantly the 'Sound' of your favorite British locomotives, though three of our American guests feature at one point. This video is for the hardcore steam enthusiast or any lover of steam power and there are a few long intros in some of the scenes, this is so you can appreciate the sound of an incoming locomotive. In this video, you'll find no wind, no talking and no unwanted interference, just the pure acoustical bliss of steam locomotion with the added sounds of chirping birds. It's recommended to watch and listen via headphones or surround sound if these options are available to you. I hope you enjoy the compilation.

What a superb collection! I cannot imagine the effort, miles and time it took to assemble this video. As an audio engineer I know how many thing are outside your control when trying to shoot videos like this. Quite the best I have ever listened to. Thank you so much!
David, thanks for your kind feedback. Filming scenes like these is never straightforward, as it's now become a spectator sport due to media coverage but thankfully we have plenty of countryside to escape in and capture some decent soundtracks from time to time.
I notice that the soundtrack is mono, was that a deliberate choice or mixed down from stereo for this this version? Not a criticism just an observation!
@@davidshaw9806 The audio is raw and taken straight from my external microphone via my video cameras and there has been no mixing in editing. What you hear is what was captured.
Regards, Liam
@@MarshSteamVideosTM Just uploaded mine last night. Tell me what you think of my effort ☺️. Was a treat for my 50th birthday

The beauty about these trains are, you hear the chugging sound, then you see the smoke, then at last the train itself. It's just glorious. Hats off to you for getting all these videos.
Few things stir my soul like the sight and sound of a hard-working steam locomotive. British steam is so elegant and classy. American railroads have nearly abandoned running steam anymore. Thank goodness, the British still revere their heritage where one can still see, hear, smell and ride behind steam.
Depends on the railroad. Norfolk Southern and Burlington Northern Santa Fe will allow steam movements on their rails, schedules permitting, and there are numerous tourist railroads that operate them. Some, like the Strasbourg, even do steam-powered revenue freight work, still.
And then, of course, there’s the Union Pacific Steam Program, with the Living Legend UP #844, UP #3985, and the Big Boy UP #4014.
But yes, the major railroads do seem to be ignoring the lessons of the Southern and Norfolk Southern Steam Programs about the value of steam power for public relations.
How does it smell? I really wonder the smell since I live in Indonesia. Is that kind of burning smell or something? Whoaa want to visit UK someday
@@yuanovitafitria8968 smell like pork ribs barbecue.
@@yuanovitafitria8968 most of them run coal occasionally some will burn wood, ive been around a few back in the day but don't remember a distinct smell
There are still steam powered trains but its not wide spread. we have a train local to me in PA that runs a track from Reading pa to jim Thorpe pa. Its more of a sight seeing thing with the benefits of hitting the shops of a small town. Its really popular in fall when the leaves in the mountians change colors and they do christmas themed runs in the winter.
It almost brings a tear to my eye when I see and hear these beautiful machines, from the steam pistons chatting and the sound of the whistle.
When they blow their whistle... they are simply saying: "Hey I'm Alive" and they all have their own characters and personality.
Fantastic video and hats-off to you sir :-)
I have watched railway videos from around the world but you just cannot beat the sight and sound of British steam, especially when you get an absolutely top notch compilation like this. Superb !!!
Many thanks for your kind verdict, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Wow! That cheered me up. That last shot of the manor was awesome. That's me leaning out of the middle door in the front coach at 50:26!
Perfect to use with my grandson for our game of trains today. Chairs in a row, teddies all aboard and whistle at the ready!
What fun. Stopped for a look and stayed for the entire adventure. Mesmerizing. Thank you.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the journey.
As a Canadian American and a devotee of many fan trips in both counties this was a delight to hear, as I recorded many over the years. The thing I find the most fascinating to listen for is the distinctive beat of a three cylinder locomotive, something one never hears in NA. When their timing is dead on and there is no distinctive lope, it is very hard to define at high speed.
What's magical to me about this video is that much of the background scenery looks to be preserved from the same era.
I suspect a Christmas well spent compiling this masterpiece. Recommended to all steam lovers. Superb, thank you so much.
Panting yer climbing emitting steam locomotives amidst England's loneliest landscape. A treat to watch. Superb.
Man made art. One thing good about old age is the memories....
I am so pleased this video popped up on my feed. Nostalgic, timeless, great memories of a bygone age, when the pace was a lot slower than it is now. Thank-you.
Shane, I'm glad to rekindle some of your memories.
You did, believe me. Memories of climbing up the bridge, so I could look over at the steam trains climbed through Kibworth cutting, and getting a face full of smuts to go to school with. Lovely times.
Did you want to eat pepper
This has to be the BEST steam train video I've seen and heard! Thank you so much for sharing!
CONGRATULATIONS on creating one of the best Steam compilations on CZcams. Amazing sound quality supported by fabulous film footage; simply brilliant. THANK YOU.
Many thanks for your kind words, you're most welcome.
What outstanding work! The clarity and crispness of both your video and audio are unmatched anywhere on the web. Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to film, edit and upload.
Marion, many thanks for your kind opinion. Glad you enjoyed it.
Years ago you could buy "Sounds of Steam" LPs, this collection puts me in mind of listening to those in the 1970s, wishing I had been born a few years earlier. Great sound punctuated by bird song, lovely thankyou.
There is a such a CD available from the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society which might interest you. It’s called “Symphony of Steam”, and features various recordings of the Nickel Plate Road 765, which just happens to be owned and operated by that very same group.
@@FS2K4Pilot i have loads of the Argo Transacord recordings
Music to our every steam lovers ears ... Thank you so much MSV 🚂💕
Its ASMR for me.
Mind blowing sound.Nothing less than well orchestrated music, so blissful. Very hard work done by you.Thanks.
Thank you for sharing these exceptional scenes. Well composed and shot. And yes, the sounds are tremendous.
Loved the scene of the 8F at Ais Gill, superb.
And some nostalgia for me. Having never been across the pond, 4472 came to me in 1970. I had the opportunity to take a short, few hundred yards, footplate ride on the Flying Scotsman. It was five dollars for only a few minutes, but wow, a memory I will not forget.
We are so very blessed to have so many wonderfully restored steam locomotives here in the UK.
I started watching this with my young granddaughter who’d never seen nor heard a steam train in her life. She now only want to watch videos of steam trains, as do I and we’ve arranged a future trip on the Flying Scotsman. Thank you so much for this video which she’s now watched every single day for the last two weeks, as have I. 👍😊👍
You're welcome, keep it on repeat, I know I do sometimes.
Perfect soundtrack for a morning planning my son's desperately awaited 00 layout 💚
I’m an engineer but not a train guy.
But this is just pure magic.
Thank you for sharing this and the amazing effort that has gone in to this.
I’m from the America. And I wish I could see those beautiful steam trains, it be my dream!
This is wonderful. My grandfather lived somewhere in the West Midlands, I don't know what borough. He was a brakeman, I think. He loved it. My grandmother
would recite all his stories. What a life then. What a life.
A fantastic collection. Thanks very much for compiling. The winning shot for me was Lizzie blasting out of the mist. Wonderfully atmospheric, but the Earl on Sapperton, and Leander at Miles Platting were superb performances as well.

Many thanks from Gemany! I love British steam locomotives. This compilation is great! A pleasure to see, to listen! Best sound I`ve ever heared!
Like 1818 beautiful video! Amazing! Greetings from Asturias 🚂💨🔝📽️👍🙋♂️
I was bought up on steam, Dad and me used to go to traction engine rallys and Dad knew the owner of the Bluebell line, I have driven the main engine of the line really great feeling to be in charge of all that power, but for me it was the smell of the steam the coal burning in the fire box and the smell of a well oiled engine 😀 i just was in my own heaven at the age of 14 ,but I'm still a big fan of steam and now Dad has gone I've got lovely memories 😀 👍
You’re so lucky the bluebell is my favourite and I love it with all my passion
Excellent footage. Thanks.
Some of the best footage ever taken. I could smell the steam.
BRILLIANT!!! Absolutely glorious footage. Thanks for all your footage over the years.
Steam at its finest! Superb video, thank you for compiling and sharing!

Great compilation and wonderful sounds!
INCREDIBLE amount of work to put this together... LOVE THE SIGHTS & SOUNDS of the chug-a-laga- Choo, Choo...Thanks for the memories!
Some fantastic shots... and amazing sounds... but, you definitely save the best to last!!! Wow!!! There is nothing sounds better than a Manor at full cry!!!!! Thanks for a great vid!

Admiración hacía los trenes antiguos qué son y siguen cumpliendo sus servicio a su población lejanos, es para no perder ésta súper máquinas y sonidos del siglo pasado. Mí admiración con éste vídeo👍💚💙💚🔊🚂.
Wow! Just came across this, and it's just beautiful. I'll look for others from your stable. Takes me right back to the glory days - 40s and 50s. Thanks so much.
Thank you for a magnificent compilation. This symphony makes me feel young again.
Keeping it simple, always the best, simply wonderful.
Utterly Glorious!
Absolutely superb, thanks Liam and Phil, this illustrates the true meaning of video and audio 'capture' many times over. Impossible to pick a favourite! Kind regards, Bob
Magnificent sights and sounds, a real treat at volume over my studio monitors :-)
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful sounds of steam in action.
Wonderful as always Marsh Steam Videos :-)
I remember as a kid my dad getting me on a steam powered train somewhere. I remember just how gentle the ride was. I had trouble staying awake because the soft rocking and noise puts you right to sleep.
Ganz grosse Klasse.
Gotta be in my top three all-time fave videos on youtube.
Fantastic upload, thank you sir, an absolute delight!
Who knew you could get, what is essentially a kettle on wheels, to be so AWESOME!
Fantastic footage! Thanks, and Happy New Year from Canada.
The finest art of video and sound I've ever seen and heard. Greetings from Austria!
Absolutely fabulous selection of clips - brilliant. Well done and thanks for sharing
YET AGAIN, AN EXCELLENT VIDEO. MANY THANKS LADS! AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Fantastic collection and very well put together. Nice long shots. Thank you so very much for this.
As an american Britain has some amazing steam engines. I've always been a fan of how powerful the engines look and BR colors are some of the best
The "Princess Elizabeth: 8:38 hurtling out of the eerie mists looks like a clip from a Sherlock Holmes story or a scene from Ridley's "Ghost Train". It's beautifully done. The tension building up, me wondering what it's going to look like, how fast. how many carriages and waiting for the glorious sound. A brilliant vid!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this wonderful compilation! Super videos and soundtracks, just wonderful.
Just wonderful! Thanks for sharing! 🚂
You just can’t beat it the sound, the sight, and smell ❤️👍🏻
I could cry🥹 So good to find someone who doesn’t spoil the sounds with music. Thank you 🙏🏼🥲
Brilliant! Excellent! Loved watching this.
If this is the only train video I´ll see in 2021, it´s good enough, awesome! Cheers fom Sweden!
5:49 It was at this moment that they knew they f*cked up
Probably the best collection.. from the best viewpoints.. in the world of UK steam. Loved the curved track view of 'Union of South Africa', a really powerful loco.. Huge thanks to the film crew..
And hilarious, near the end, to see not one but three US-built heavyweight locos emerging from a tunnel in a cloud of steam, and with not one but two diesel engines at the back!
Fantastic! Excellent filming with good audio, beautiful sounds of steam. It's been a pleasure to watch and listen.
Thanks a million.
Thank you for this superb compilation - there are some wonderful sights and sounds. I particularly enjoyed the three S160's plus two diesels at the rear. I have never seen that combination before.
Surely some kind of stock move. That baby rake could not possibly need that sort of grunt! Great thing to see, though - thank you.
Fabulous locations, wonderful photography and sound recording and, of course, great locomotives. Brought a real smile during this ghastly lockdown. I think I will need to watch iy on a daily basis.
I like the one in the fog. I remember in Manchester, as a boy feeling the brick wall and the address number to find myway home.
Fantastic work, love all the shots!
Brought back wonderful memories of trainspotting (in its original meaning). As a youngster in the early 60s I used to take the local from Palmers Green to Wood Green (Alexandra Park) at weekends, and saw many A1, A3 and A4 Pacifics blasting through among all of the other less-glamorous locos; a multitude of tankers and the magnificent 2-10-0 9Fs. Also had the "bad luck" to miss a connection at Swindon once, and had to spend an entire afternoon on the platform... There were still a few Castle Class running then.
It is wonderful to see that so many of these great machines have been lovingly restored to their original liveries and numbers, and kept running, long after their shedmates went to scrap. And they all look so much cleaner now than they did back then under BR!
Super quality video, beautiful framing and composition, and above all super sound! My grand-daughter is now just starting to appreciate choo-choos, which gives me the ideal excuse to keep watching over and over.
Thank you so much for this!
from Toronto, Canada
Wonderful job! Nothing quite like the sound of a steam locomotive. Thank you!
An absolute delight, many thanks for sharing this excellent work.
Wonderful when we can neither see nor hear our favourites
Amazing audio. Lizzi in the fog is totally awesome. Very well done.
Sapperton Bank sums up this vid. Beautifully videoed in a magnificent location, and with high definition. Brilliant selection!
Wonderful work...just shows that one doesn't need constant whistling and clanging of bells all the bloody time (a gentle hint to the Americans).
Thank you for the music !! 👍👍👍
Cheers
Dirk
If it isn't power... What it could be so? Woooow!😍😍
A truly spectacular symphony of both video and sound. Well done and thanks for filming and posting - most enjoyable!
Bravo!
A feast of rhythms ,tenpi , rate, speeds, acceleration and deceleration,
Than k goodness for nil background music !!These noble machines have their own music !
solum relinquatis eam
Brilliant!
Magnificent! Thank you very much.
Just so so beautiful!
Very professional video work and great editing. Highly watchable!
My heart was healed. Thank you for the wonderful steam locomotive video.

Beautiful compilation, thank you kindly for this! Excellent editing and sound. The more I watch of this the more there is to appreciate. What a treat.
Glad you enjoyed it!
lovely video, looks and sounds great! thank you
Great video...great sounds. Thank you for your effort!
Fantastic. Reminds me of Peter Handford's recordings on vinyl, but now with film too!
The only things missing are the wonderfully off-beat V2s on the Settle & Carlisle: sounds we'll never hear again...
Absolutely fantastic. Thanks so much for loading.
Chris, you're welcome.
12 out 10 Excellent video of a forgotten 😟😞 era!! 👍👍
50m +, 3 locomotives together; magnificent 👌👍👍
I have recorded steam trains on video myself, it is more difficult than most realize!!
