  • In this video, we look at the futuristic and organically shaped Gevi 4 in 1 Coffee Machine. This machine is unlike any that I have seen before. No wonder the organic shapes and anodized aluminum construction has gained it a red dot award in 2021. In the video, we dive into its design, and we demo it for coffee and even try making an espresso with its included grinder. Strap in!

    I have one sent from Gevi for commercial videos that were made. Its a good machine. Take a bit to learn to program recipes it once you do a few it works great. Dialing in took a bit to find a good size. But its been used in many applications by many people including myself. They did a good job with it. Excellent review! I believe one of the fundamentals of making coffee that you enjoy, is consistency. Aside from the initial time investment in the starting process of creating a flavor profile, this machine takes away a lot of the guess work it seems. There is value in automation, and the ability to get granular with the steps involved. My knee-jerk reaction was, "This is too involved to make pour-over." That being said, once it was made clear that you were creating a profile and only had to use minimal inputs to the device moving forward, I was ok with this. I also enjoyed watching the shot on the Lelit (Grace?) using the finest grind setting for a pour-over machine, as this stresses the importance of having a proper grinder, depending on application.

    I've become more of a pour over maker in recent months and pulling espresso on the weekends or early afternoon during the week if I have time - for me this seems worth it (just bought one) mainly so that others in the house don't have to remember or work with a recipe they can simply run the ones that are in the machine (or added). This also somewhat cleans up the coffee area and I can put away a kettle, scale, dripper, carafe and stand alone grinder - those will still be handy but not on the counter day by day. For those who may think it's too involved for a simple pour over - there's the trade off for consistency vs. simplicity . I've made good (not great) coffee scooping and not using a scale or timer but I've almost always made better when I've invested a little more time and attention into the process. I'll never criticize - sometimes it's just fine to put 5 "scoops" of McCaffe in a Mr. Coffee and 10 cups of water and hit brew - for a lot of people (most in fact) that's still a good cup of coffee...

    Tom, I enjoy your reviews very much. Perhaps you could dive deeper with your reviews and point out whether or not there is any plastic in contact with water. People are concerned these days about the chemicals associated with plastic, and it’s a big issue when it comes to being in contact with hot water. For me, I’ve eliminated all my coffee makers that have any plastic parts. Only one left is finding an espresso machine. Something to consider in all of your reviews, as I’m sure your audience, including me, would greatly appreciate it. Much thanks, Tom. Oh, I might add aluminum to that as well. Some studies say aluminum is a dangerous health risk, and some say it’s not. Why the controversy, I don’t know. I’ll stay on the side of precaution.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for your interesting comment! The issue is, every pump machine has some plastic in it, or silicon. You need a low pressure silicon hose to go from the water tank to the pump, then a high pressure line from the pump to the boiler, for example. And of course all water tanks are plastic, except for one ECM which uses a glass water tank.
      In the end, the La Pavoni is the only machine I know that fulfills that criteria. Water tank is the boiler, which is SS, and there's no pump. The water gets pressurized by the steam pressure, and exits into the lever valve chamber, from where the pressure is then compacted via the lever. There are some rubber gaskets in that group head, but no plastic that I know about. I did also make a video on the La Pavoni Professional, if you are curious. Cheers! Tom

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner thank you for the in-depth info. I looked up the La Pavona espresso machines, and they are quite a bit out of my reach. I’m still hoping to find an espresso machine that is safe, health wise, and, of course, within my budget. Tom, if you do come across one, it would be nice if you could review it. To be honest, I don’t know why they can’t use just stainless steel and copper only. Aluminum, plastic and rubber will leach out harmful chemicals. One would think that with all the attention given to this area over the past few years, manufacturers would catch on. Anyway, Tom, thank you for for attention to this.

      I think this product might also be aimed at those who love design. My engineering buddies at work were really tickled by the design of this machine. But yeah, I think part of the appeal of pour over, is the process itself.

    • @coreycannon4511
      @coreycannon4511 Před rokem

      I think the main issue I have is that this machine absolutely makes sense (economically) in that you get a total pour-over set up, all in one, if you’re just starting out. And don’t have any decent coffee making gear at all. For $1000CAD, you get a gooseneck kettle equivalent ($200), scale ($100), excellent filter grinder (based on other reviews - let’s call it $400), carafe ($30) and dripper (let’s call it $10 for a plastic V60) which totals $740CAD. It’s programmability (and repeatability) are easily worth the $260CAD difference. This would be perfect for the specialty coffee beginner (like me). It totally takes the learning curve required for excellent specialty coffee pour-over results. Especially repeatable results.
      My problem with the Gevi is this: I got into specialty coffee a year ago - oddly enough, almost to the day. This resulted from receiving a moka pot for Christmas and my going online to find out how to use it (I lost the instructions) and I fell down the specialty coffee rabbit hole. 4 months later, last April, I discovered an excellent local roaster, and visiting relatives in a bigger city in May, an even better roaster, that sold coffee equipment. So I bought a Timemore Black Mirror Basic + scale, a $300CAD hand grinder (J-MAX) and an Aeropress. I wanted the great coffee I just started brewing with my Moka, over the prior month, on the road and at work. I already had an ok grinder and a cheap kitchen scale that I’d been using with the Moka. I’ve never gotten into pour-over since, because to do it really well, I’d need a decent temperature control gooseneck kettle ($200) as well as the relatively cheap dripper. And then get good at making pour-over. As for the Gevi, the value for me, has dropped significantly because I have more than half its value in gear already. I believe it’s the perfect beginner’s machine, but I wonder how many beginners are into specialty coffee AND are starting completely from scratch, when it comes to gear.
      On the other hand, my wife would probably love it, after I set it up for her and if she could get over the $1000 price tag (not a chance). She loves the coffee I make, but can’t be bothered to learn how to do it herself. So most of the time, she reaches for the Keurig in the morning because we work on different schedules. As for me, I can count on both hands the number of times I’ve used the Keurig in the last 18 months.

      But anyway, if you already have all the gear, then this doesn't make much financial sense, that is true. It looks cool though, so maybe for some who want to get into specialty coffee, and like the design, could be well served. Cheers!
