  • Fluid Art Pouring Mediums / How I Mix My Mediums / Beginner Acrylic Pouring Tutorial
    I have gotten a lot of questions about the different pouring mediums i use and why. It was time to make a new batch of pouring medium, so i decided to film it. A lot of this is just the ramblings of a mad woman LOL! But there are a lot of newer artist our there in the fluid art world and i thought this might be useful.
    Almost all ingredients can be found in my amazon store linked below. The gloss medium and varnish i use is by creative inspirations, available at jerrys artarama.
    I use a different pouring medium for almost each pour i do.
    For most pours i use 1000ml of floetrol, 500ml of gloss medium and varnish, and 200ml of GAC 800.
    For cells with silicone i use:
    floetrol 1000ml, glue all 1000ml, 400ml gloss medium and varnish, 200ml of GAC 800
    For dutch pours i use just a water normally (this does change as i experiment)
    Fort satin enamel i leave out the gloss medium and normally use just floetrol
    colander pour: 50/50 gloss medium and varnish and floetrol

    I am so happy that I found acrylic pouring/fluid art a few years ago. It has helped me in so many ways and it just keeps getting better and better. This visual arts creative outlet has made me so happy. I am loving this abstract art! I hope to keep doing this for years to come! I have always been fascinated by modern and contemporary art. There is something about it that is so freeing and expressive. I love acrylic pouring because I get to experiment and really join the creative side of my brain with the scientific part! There are so many different fluid acrylic pouring techniques out there, so much more to try and have fun with. Make sure you are subscribed to my channel so that you may learn and be creative with me. I love hearing all of your comments. Why did you start adding the varnish & medium to some of your mixes? Is just the varnish much different to work with?
      I have a number of mediums and I'm trying to figure out the differences between them. I can understand thicker or thinner flows, just not always how to get there. I wonder if there's a cheat sheet on the difference between pouring medium, gac800, varnish?
      Why use one vs combine 2 or more - what properties are changed?
      Great video. Thx.

      Thanks Molly! This was really informative. So much about art is prep & mediums. Painting/covering the canvas is the last part! So many of us are in a rush & excited with the picture thats inside our heads we forget or dismiss the basics. By the time we figure out what went wrong, we've already wasted lots of paint. This will help so many of us to prepare properly. Thank you 😁🧡💛💚

    This video is the first tutorial I have watched start to finish in a really long time. I've watched literally 100's, if not 1,000's on the artform, but so many CZcamsrs are doing the same techniques without explaining or giving any info on their media mixtures. I so appreciate all the hard earned knowledge you've shared here. I may have to re-watch and take notes then.
    I'm a total newbie to acrylic pour painting. I've done only 1 canvas and that was in a class where the instructor had pre-mixed the media. We did get to mix our colors though. Now, after watching your video and pinning it for future reference, I feel like I'll be more likely to be successful on my own sooner and more often. Thank you so much!

      For cells to form, cells: I use 1.5-2 parts of my pouring medium* to 1 part acrylic paint; Stir well. Then, add a teaspoon (or less) of water; stir well, until the consistency is right. Then, just before you do your pour, add 1-4 drops of bicycle silicone lubricant to each color. I don't add it to the base color though. Last, swirl your stir stick in the paint for maybe 2 times around the cup.
      *My home-made pouring medium recipe is: 3 parts Glue-All (Elmer's School glue) to 1 part water. then stir well. Good luck! Let us know how it goes. ❤️

    @rochford1000 Před 4 lety +6

    This has to be one of the best videos I've seen regarding the application of pouring medium to acrylic paint. Also, your warning as regards adding too much water is absolutely correct! The official Liquitex website states that no more than 25% of water should be added to their acrylics and I would presume that 'student' grade paints would need even less owing to their lower level of pigment (hence the cheaper price)!
    I have seen many artists on CZcams mix their acrylic with too much water without knowing the long term consequences. Although everything may look OK at the time of applying the paint, the downside is that too much water will upset the acrylic polymer and the molecules can not bind properly to form any stability as far as the paint film is concerned. Furthermore, although this may not be visually apparent at first, it can happen over a period of time resulting in cracking/flaking and some fading of the paints colours and vibrancy. This is extremely important if you sell your work considering customers won't be too happy if this starts to happen six months or so after they have bought your painting and given you their money!
    Yes, 'artists' quality mediums are expensive, professional quality paint is expensive, but if you value the hard work and time that you put into a painting, the last thing you want is to worry that it may be ruined and start to flake/crack or discolour over a period of time (not to mention irate customers demanding their money back)!
    Thank you Molly for an informative video and for all you hard work.
    Stay safe.
    Kevin. UK.

    Sherwinn Williams has a liquid binder to thin paint if you want to use it in a sprayer. I use that instead of water. Together with floetrol.

    Molly. Once again THANK YOU. For taking the time to walk us through this. For being willing to always share your experience and knowledge with us. For being accessible to answer questions. Over and over again. You're a dear to share your pouring journey with all of us. Truly....HAPPY PAINTING to YOU!!
    I took lots of notes. I'm sure the questions will come. I will check out the video on consistencies. Journaling is a great idea. I can see where having a vlog would help to recall what/how you did something as well. I'm not saying I'm going to get on YT 😳 I'm just saying it's a great way to track progress. I did think about starting totally green and wonder if people would even be interested. But I also know how brutal people on social media are. Keyboard experts 🙄 I also see the camaraderie in the fluid art community. Well mostly. Thanks again for your generous support of us newbies.

I feel confident now to go out, buy some supplies, and give it a go! Thanks Molly! It was so helpful to see you describe the products, a little about the chemistry, what mediums generally work for each technique, and see you actually mix them and describe ratios. Super helpful!!

    Thank you Molly. You explained and answered many of my questioned. I have one more though. When you're using paints, and have added the silicone, but don't use the entire amount made up is it OK to save it to use another time? If you can save it do you add more silicone when you use it again?

    • @MOLLYSARTISTRY
      @MOLLYSARTISTRY  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes you can save them, I don't normally work in silicine much anymore, but if you do reuse, I would only add maybe one more drop as a refresher

    • @MOLLYSARTISTRY

      They last around 3 to 6 months if there is no water added, and just need a little mixing. No the house paint is not guesso, that is a priming material for the canvases before you paint.

    • @MOLLYSARTISTRY
      @MOLLYSARTISTRY  Před 4 lety +4

      I actually asked the paint store and they said that most paints now have a primer in them but it does not mean that it reacts any differently so the one that I use now is either Glidden or valse bar I believe that color place from Walmart has 1 that is a paint with no primer and I have used that as well but I don't worry about that as much anymore

    Ok I feel like this is going to be a really stupid question to ask haha but this pouring medium has no paint in it. So i just add the colour paint I want to use, check the consistency (and amend as necessary) and im ready to go? Also how long does the pouring medium last if sealed? Is it better to make a big batch or lots of little batches of it?
