  • Paint and Water Dutch Pour Consistency Tutorial for how to mix your acrylic paints!
    So i am very aware that i said dont mix ml and grams and i did it anyway! Was not quick on my thinking feet on this one LOL. These of course are all approximations anyway and will vary depending on each brand and color you use. I do no measure in my regular practice. Something else that maybe I did not clarify well is that a scale measures ml in terms of water. It will not give you the appropriate ml of something other than water. Either way, hope you found this somewhat helpful and the consistency test at the end is the best concept to take from this video!
    Happy painting!
    As a simplified version you can use the ratio ~ 30:20 paint to water as well.
    Inspiration for the dutch pour is Rinske Douna

    I will link in the comments the website Just Paint from Golden that discusses how much water you can feasibly add to acrylic paints and mediums without affecting their longevity.
    For this dutch pour technique I use amsterdam paints mostly and some winsor and newton and some arteza. They all hold up relatively well although amsterdam are the best.
    This does not work well for craft paints or less pigmented paints with poor binders. I do not normally measure my mixtures so this one took me some time.
    But when i originally started this type of pour i thought i was putting about a third water in with my paints and i realized that it was more like 40 to 50%. So i decided to make this video to help others that have trouble with figuring out the ratios and doing the calculations.
    I covered a lot so if i misspoke or if there is something i forgot that you would like to add, feel free to drop me a comment in the comment section!

      Thank you for your excellent video on mixing ratios, it's answered a lot of questions for me and I always enjoy your videos. Could you tell me if it's possible to touch up a dried dutch pour? I ended up with a lot of white patches where I blew out the paint with the hairdryer and it needs more colour - or can I paint over the whole canvas again?

    I just happened on an acrylic pouring video a few weeks ago and have been absolutely mesmerized by the process. Decided I wanted to make a couple as gifts for my oldest daughter- but with the pouring medium, and it was such a horrible epic failure! Watching this video where its just water and paint gives me hope that I can actually make something! Thank you Molly for teaching an old dog some new tricks!

And thank you to everyone who commented! You're comments are also incredibly helpful. Hugs to you all! Here goes nothing! :) At the very least, it'll be fun!! :)

      Hi, I'm new as well . If you would like to start ,but feel intimidated maybe start with a paint set thats ready to pour. I did my first one with a ready to pour set off of Amazon. I have always wanted to paint with acrylics and let my intimidation get in the way. My best advice is to just do it. So far I've done an abstract , pour, and an actual landscape ( landscape was my most intimidating). Starting is sometimes the hard part ,but you will love it and ots SO therapeutic! I try to paint once a week. Its my stress relief bc while I love my kids being around them 24/7/365 without a break means I needed to do something. And I love it !! And I feel its ok to make some mistakes.
      My first pour i didn't have a torch and the pour was beautiful. Thought there was a speck of dust so tried to get it out. It was a bubble ans made a whole. So then tried to fix it and made it worse. Wish I hadn't touched it. Someone wanted to buy it actually. However, it was a lesson and I just painted over it with white to use it again and practice more things. You will love it !!best wishes !!!

      @@irlhills4570 thank you so much for your post. I will follow your advice to buy ready pour paint. I am really called to try but I have never done it. A bit insecure about the torch … which I won’t use right away… good luck. We are in 2022 and I am sure by now you are a pro.! 🙂

Finally the penny dropped when you said don’t have your base paint too thick on the canvas or it will swallow your colours. Also that drip test was the final piece of the Dutch pour puzzle that I have been struggling with so much. You are totally amazing. Thank you so much for your attitude, beautiful work and all round lovely person that you are.

      Boy I loved your comment and I hope you mean when you ruined 4 canvases that you at least try to scrape them or paint on top of them. I have a 3 paint rule I ditch them after 3 attempts. Oddly enough some of the ones that I paint over turn out to be the best.I think it's lack of pressure ruining a canvas. Anyway I'm glad your light bulbs went off this is so much fun.Molly is awesome!

    • @TSBS986
      @TSBS986 Před 3 lety +4

      Kelli Quinn LOL yes if it is wet and not salvageable, I just scrape it and use it again- 3 scrapes is my max. If it is dry and I hate it, I sandpaper it lightly and paint over. You are right tho! Two of my best loved paintings were painted over ‘ruined’ canvases 😁

    Thank so much Molly for showing us how to get the right consistency of paint for a Duch Pour, it is a challenge to get it right, I know it took me forever to figure it out, I'm no good at math so I hard for me to get it right. That painting is georgios, I love it. I had to cheat in school and use a calculator, made my teachers mad lol but I told them well it's either that or we will be here forever so they finally said well then carry on lol

    Molly, thank you so much for your demonstration at the end of mixing your paint. Especially the demonstration of the test on the paper of the measured drip.So smart! That is the most informative thing I have seen so far concerning how to know if my paint consistency matches throughout my colors. So thanks to you I understand a lot better now exactly how to test if all colors are mixed the same. Good & very important knowledge to have. Thanks again for taking the time show us that. I can't wait to see the difference it will make💜

    This was so helpful! I am only a few months in and I find it almost scary to add water because I started out with cheap craft paint and when I added water it always broke. Then i moved to thicker paints but was still wary of adding water. Now what i do is the drip test (thx for adding that i thought i waz being a noob lol) and i also get a piece of paper and add the colors like i would on a dutch pour and blow it out to see how it moves. Then add water accordingly. I am just set on having my paints thicker lol. Thx so so much for this I learned alot

    When you're using the scales, you're actually measuring in grams (which equals millilitres of water) which is why the mL are a bit out from the measuring cup. 30mL of water =30g but 30mL of paint doesn't necessarily =30g.

    • @karenavery3672
      @karenavery3672 Před 3 lety +1

      So if my scale just have grams can I use grams for it all?

    • @lisakennealy1695
      @lisakennealy1695 Před 3 lety

      Mmm....yeah...I was puzzling over scales that weigh in millilitres...
      Cos 50mls of syrup is not the same as 50mls of water when you come to weigh it. Syrup is heavier.
      So I'm scratching my head but I'd choose weight. Grams.
      Love the channel Molly. You're cheery and that does me good. :) See I'm smiling. :D

    Hi Molly, thank you so much for this tutorial! I've found my pouring mixes too thick for a while, so this makes so much sense. I've been wanting to add water, but worried about the adhesion. But, what do you add to the mix to get the cells?

    I'm curious to know if using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of each paint brand (and color within that brand) could be useful for determining how much water/pouring medium is needed to achieve a desired consistency.

    • @camrouxbg
      @camrouxbg Před 2 lety +1

      I am not sure how much that would help. You might be alright just working with volumes and mass in a graduated cylinder. If you are careful with your graduated cylinder, you should be able to make your own scale conversion for each colour, brand, etc. But if you have a hydrometer and want to try it, I'd say go for it.

    • @1jugglethis
      @1jugglethis Před 2 lety +1

      @@camrouxbg After thinking about it for a while, I decided that using the hydrometer would be pretty darned tedious :)

    • @keith726able
      @keith726able Před rokem +2

      Don't bother with the hydrometer - you'll just make a mess and it really won't help. Use a scale, measure in grams. In the end, any volume differences caused by different paint densities will be fixed when you add the water to get the final consistency, and that's all that matters.

    • @1jugglethis
      @1jugglethis Před rokem +1

      @@keith726able Agreed. I decided to abandon that idea after considering it for a bit. Besides, most paint companies have a tech sheet with the SG of their paints on their websites. No need to reinvent the wheel.

    • @keith726able
      @keith726able Před rokem +1

      @@1jugglethis I'm a chemical engineer - used to measuring everything to the last decimal place. Paint pouring should be fun, not a math exercise. However, consistency is everything, but you can make adjustments at the end. That flow test is the best advice ever - that's all that really matters after you've gotten the thickness close. Even if you mess up the math, the final test is the flow blobs - when they're all the same you're ready to go.
      I hope you're having fun, making incredibly beautiful artwork.
